I hear this is a track from the next Fall album.

So a couple hours ago Whiney said "you'd better post to ILX about this tonight" --

-- "this" being the fact that there was a great big fire in his building, and a good amount of the poor guy's stuff is either burned or water-damaged, and he's out of an apartment he's lived in for years. (Various folks were over helping box up the salvageable stuff so he can get it into storage.)

Hopefully he wasn't kidding about the "you'd better post about this tonight" part.

My understanding is that the cause of the fire had nothing to do with either ILX beefs or picking on Drake. (Although there was a Drake-related "near-riot" in NYC today, so ... hmm.)

I don't know if this means he'll be off ILX for a while or back in the saddle with a whole new sense of vigor and determination. But having your place burn up does not look any fun at all, so I for one am wishing the guy good luck.

On his twitter, he said that about 80% of his stuff is okay, so good for that. Still, this has to suck so bad.

Damn Whiney, my sympathies. Checking ILX is probably not your top priority at the moment, but when you do, let me know if there's anything you need. Don't even know what city you're in, but if you need a place to stay around Boston you'll be set up. My apartment was burned down when I was in high school. Losing your stuff is pretty terrible, and getting uprooted in that way can take a major psychological toll that you might not fully recognize at first, in the rush to get back to something like normal. So be on the watch for that and take care of yourself. And again, if there's anything I can do to help with the taking care, just say it.

I was tremendously saddened to see the news via your Twitter last night Whiney. I know we've butted heads a few times on here, but my thoughts are with you now and I hope things work out for the best. I'm not sure what help an unemployed duder in Chicago can offer, but if theres anything I can do... let me know.

Sorry, I meant to follow up on this -- I was only there for a while, to drop off some boxes/flashlights and pitch in a little, but it looked like the lucky part was that he had his office in the most protected room in the place ... so he lost a lot of living-room and probably bedroom stuff, but it seemed like a lot of records, books, papers, etc. came through okay.

He has someone great to stay with and help him out, so he's good in that sense.

glad you're okay whiney - hope this doesn't come off as callous or w/e, but there are a lot of cheap solutions to backup your files online, e.g. carbonite, and it's a good idea to have off-site backups of your data in general... so you don't run into burning buildings!!

sorry that happened--I lost all my stuff in a fire 7 years ago (woke up to find my ceiling on fire with flaming bits falling onto the bed.) Got a pretty big settlement from the lawsuit, but that took 4 years.

Whiney, have you done anything about smoke damage? My memories of the fire in my apartment a little distant (it was 1982), but I remember that smoke damage was pretty deep and instantaneous and the smell of soot won't go away until you address it properly -- won't wash out of clothes without certain chemicals, all your recovered stuff (books, records, jewel cases, etc etc) has to be treated; when it's just sitting in boxes it's just soaking in the smell. I also remember that we were so drenched in the smell, having moved lots of the smoky stuff we salvaged with us to a hotel, that we didn't at first notice it, but man, the people who worked in the hotel sure did.

Fire insurance can go a long way toward this type of thing. Hope you had plenty. Anyone reading this who isn't really interested in experiencing all the details of this type of nightmare firsthand -- GET FIRE INSURANCE.

My girlfriend and I are friends with Rose and were there all day wed packing her apt and moving it to uhaul on 4th ave. Had no idea music critic and fellow ILXor was doing the same in downstairs apt. I'd been to your building before, it was a good location and the yard was nice except for the giant slugs. Sorry you had to go through that and good luck...

that was strange to hear about too, from what i read of oldham prior he didn't seem like a musician. but i read just now that he hired different session musicians and called them the andrew loog oldham orchestra, so yeah, i see, it was a riff by one of his hired guns.

Although the song's lyrics were written by Verve vocalist Richard Ashcroft, it has been credited to Keith Richards and Mick Jagger after charges by the original copyright owners that the song was plagiarized from the Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording of The Rolling Stones' 1965 song "The Last Time".
