John J has kindly volunteered to tabulate the results so we are going to have an ILM Alltime Best Metal/Heavy Rock tracks Poll & ILM's Alltime Best Metal/Heavy Rock Albums Poll.
This is the thread to nominate the tracks. No limit on nominations for now but that may change. As regards to "alternative" stuff, Grunge obviously counts, janes addiction count(jane says too because if that doesnt count then neither does the metal ballads, which would be silly) , but not sonic youth or dinosaur jr type stuff. If you're not sure ask on thread, someone will comment for sure!We can discuss and veto tracks on this thread. But make sure you do, no moaning when results are in.
So onwards with your nominations.
Will start with a few obvious ones.
Black Sabbath - ParanoidLed Zeppelin - Stairway To HeavenDeep Purple - Smoke On The WaterIron Maiden - Run To The HillsGuns N Roses - Sweet Child O MineGuns N Roses - Paradise CityJanes Addiction - Been Caught StealingNirvana - Smells Like Teen SpiritPearl Jam - Alive

― MumblestheRevelator, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not against it but others might. Nominate stuff and if people wish to veto it we can. Or we just add "punk" to the thread title if there's loads of demand hehe.
But I think certain punk belongs and some dont. I think Anarchy In The UK prob should be nommed. I think Kick Out The Jams and I Wanna Be Your Dog type stuff should be too. The line between metal/punk/hard rock has long blurred. No Television or Blondie though...I guess Green Day can since most of their fans are "kerrang" type. I think most know here which punk metal fans like and so on.
But will leave the decisions to the majority on this thread.

I dont see why not. Its a great heavy track. But I dont think ballots of 1 or 2 songs/albums will be accepted! But i know you have a secret teenage metal past anyway..

I'd agree. (I love those bands too.)

lol johnny, im dreading all the votes for hair metal, but that was kinda the reason for the tracks poll, they kinda more belong in one than the albums (with some exceptions.
BUT FOR FFS
YOU LEFT OUT HANOI ROCKS
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)
Ha, not at all! I'm one of the few people I know who didn't go through a metal phase. I was a grunge kid, but along the Nirvana/Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr lines rather than Alice In Chains/Soundgarden.
On the other hand, I do love Sabbath and Hawkwind. I could put together a ballot of just them. But I probably shouldn't - all the real metallers will hate me for ruining their poll.
― emil.y, Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)
Hanoi Rocks - Tragedy
emil.y dont be silly. If you like enough to make a ballot then do it. This is an ILM poll not a terrorizer poll anyway!
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)
No doubt a lot of grunge will make my ballot anyway. It was my way in.
Its going to be a fucking nightmare limiting my ballot to 50 albums though.

I just noted that I was nominating hair metal. Not that it was shitty. You're a pretty judgmental fuck, haha!
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)
Tool - Schism
― Sundar, Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

Now I know how Tuomas feels when he gets razzed for talking about dance music in year-end threads. I'm being marginalized!!!
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)
I really wish tuomas would nominate some metal/heavy rock songs he liked. I can see plenty of people voting for tracks but not albums actually.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

bad me, i was too busy marginalizing poor johnny! ;)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:56 (fifteen years ago)
Does 'Heart Shaped Box' really count as Metal/Heavy Rock? I mean, I can see 'School' working within the remit, but not ALL Nirvana songs. What next, 'Molly's Lips'?
― emil.y, Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:07 (fifteen years ago)
damn right it does. and it will be bloody high in my ballot too. ( Heart Shaped Box)
Its heavier than bon jovis 80s hits that i have no objection to being nominated as its still heavy rock.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)
Kreator - Impossible Brutality
― Sundar, Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:10 (fifteen years ago)
As I said before metal/heavy rock bands still made lighter songs that are still songs made by metal/hard rock bands. I'm not a fan of metal/hard rock ballads, I despise many of them, but they're still classed as metal/heavy rock songs.

The Who? Really?
― underneath the moon and the stars (Whitey on the Moon), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:43 (fifteen years ago)
I think the parameters of this poll may be fatally ill-defined.
― underneath the moon and the stars (Whitey on the Moon), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)
I think the definition is clear its just a wide category. I don't really see how Led Zeppelin or BOC could be accepted but The Who rejected.
― Viceroy of the Daleks (Viceroy), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)
Will leave it up to thread participants to decide on what gets in or not.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:54 (fifteen years ago)
Anyone else says the who shouldnt be allowed (obv theres a difference between 60s and 70s who) speak up

btw no ska-punk.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)
I don't really see how Led Zeppelin or BOC could be accepted but The Who rejected.
^ this. I mean it's pretty easy to disqualify bands like Jesus & Mary Chain or Spiritualized out of nothing more than common sense, but The Who from 1971-on fits just as easily in this category as Zeppelin, BOC, AC/DC, etc do. I mean, there's no way in hell I'm voting for Slipknot, but I don't mind it being included because diversity within hard rock makes the world go round!
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 July 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)
the who definitely made heavy rock in the 70s.

Can I just remind people nominating stuff, is there really much point nominating stuff that noone else would vote for? Otherwise we just get complaints that the noms list takes too long to scroll through and that a lot of it is pointless.
I've deliberately not nominated stuff thats obscure and that I'd be the only 1 voting for.

I dunno, for an all-time poll I think you should nominate as much as you like - I tend to rely on nominations when making my ballots, and I don't see how it is extra tabulating time for you - surely you only input the ones that get votes as the votes come in?

emil.y , i dont mind, but some (inc jeff) complained about too much upthread.
I still dont know if i can allow the beatles. I understand why the songs are nominated, but i worry ilm skews the poll too much if you know what I mean.
There's just no way they should get in a top 100 metal/heavy rock list imo
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 9 July 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)
I would add another voice to discounting the Beatles. Haven't heard the song in a while but it never struck me as particularly heavy rock. Maybe heavy-Beatles, but it's not a heavy-Beatles poll. But then, I'd also discount the Stones and the Who and most of the punk and even a lot of the Nirvana. I don't even like metal, but I seem to be more of a purist than most of you guys!
― emil.y, Friday, 9 July 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)
stones are a nono ppl said so the beatles are out. the 2 who tracks ARE heavy rock though, so they stay (as do nirvana)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 9 July 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)
I thought nomming the Beatles would be contentious. I do think that's a heavy rock track (the riff is massive), but I can see how it wold open the floodgates. Discount away!

just so you know pfunkboy I def. plan on voting for every track I nominated--that's why I redid them--and part of the fun of voting in these polls is taking throwing some of my own personal faves against the wall and seeing what sticks (tho I imagine dealing with a list this big is pretty unwieldly, and I'm sorry)

Journey = not metal, APART from that one song I nominated, and maybe Stone In Love if you're pushing it. I would've put an Armageddon or Captain Beyond track but who's going to vote for them, no-one is who.
― A prog venn diagram for you to think about (Matt #2), Friday, 9 July 2010 19:11 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, the thing that attracted me to Journey in the very beginning was the almost-metalness of "Separate Ways." I soon discovered that wasn't a running thing with them, but whatever. That song is great.

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)
You've already moved back the end date once - just because there are a lot of noms doesn't mean that everyone who might want to nominate something has seen this thread. Leave closing it until the date listed.
― emil.y, Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)
(I don't know why I've become so invested in this poll seeing as I may not even vote in it. Procrastination does some strange things to you.)
― emil.y, Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)
Also, I just noticed you've not got Black Widow on the list - surely that can't be discounted?

didn't you nominate that on the albums thread?(ps go nominate stuff there)

Oh heck, did I? It gets confusing switching between the two threads - it's a track not an album. For C&P purposes:

please do not veto "crazy horses" tho
it seems really stupid to not allow the rolling stones when you're allowing lynyrd skynyrd
― goth (crüt), Sunday, 11 July 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)
Skynyrd have always been part of the heavy rock canon, the stones aren't.re the osmonds - It's up to people to object to stuff to veto it (and to see how many will defend it)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 01:36 (fifteen years ago)
So who has objections to nominations and believe something to be non metal/heavy rock and should be vetoed from the list? This thread is the only time to do it. Once nominations are over on friday that is it.No point on telling me on AIM in Chatz that stuff isn't suitable. Do it here!
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)
I would probably allow 'Crazy Horses' but I don't know the other Osmonds tracks to say whether I should be objecting or not. I think 'Crazy Horses' just gets a pass because it's a proper classic.

Any songs on there you genuinely think does not belong? We should really discuss it before noms end and its too late. I still think the criteria of a) a band of heavy rock or metal lineage or b) the song is heavy enough is what we go by for the tracks poll. In which case I see no problem with Crazy Horses as it seems to qualify by the latter.
xp

― Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)
It's not a rap song, it's probably mostly r&b but it's got a stomping beat and Slash is on it - how can it not qualify? Agree that it'd be a strange winner, but it's a terrific track and would grace the list I reckon. Anyway, the list needs this too:

why the hell are there Osmonds songs on this list but "Chowdertown" and "Croton-Hormon" by Walt Mink are a step too far?
― Fee Fie Fo, FUNFNFUINFLFF! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)
Don't know why "The Last Days" by The Osmonds isn't on the list, that actually is a heavy rock song. So I nominate:
The Osmonds - The Last Days

jj, my fellow conspirator , wants the deadline to stay to let the stragglers catch up.But I know what you mean. I dont see anything essential that will make a top 100 being added but you never know.Have a look at the albums noms and see if we missed anything there.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 18:05 (fifteen years ago)
Noone wants the osmonds vetoed so kjb will be happy.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)
Blackstreet got the boot then? Another which occurred in a similarish vein was Tricky - Black Steel but I haven't heard it for years and can't remember how heavy it actually is, so I'll hold off for the moment. In the meantime, if you're looking for obvious:
At The Drive-In - Arc ArsenalLed Zeppelin - Black DogLed Zeppelin - Over The Hills And Far Away
I mean, I could nominate every Zep track and I'm trying not to, but it just seems wrong to miss those two.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)
A couple of obvious omissions :
Iron Maiden - Running FreeMetallica - Creeping Death
― A prog venn diagram for you to think about (Matt #2), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)
I thought creeping death had been nominated, but it hadn't. Would expect that to place in the top 100.
God, choosing a top 50 is gonna be hard.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)
this is what I feared would happen. People are going to veto "Crazy Horses" just because KJB decided to be KJB and nominate other Osmonds songs.
― goth (crüt), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)
I think Crazy Horses would be staying in, even though he was Bozelka-ing.KJB will not vote as he could never find 50 tracks and albums to vote for.

What was that electronic depeche mode-y song that some ilmers loved?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 15 July 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)
No idea - my love for Linkin is entirely unrelated to any treatment they may have received on ilm. I'm sure that's only been positive anyway. Truth be told I see them as a great singles band, in the same way I like Jamiroquai, say. I find them much more difficult in long doses.

― blackened symphonic epic porno tech doom-core (J3ff T.),
I guess I am inclined to agree with you there. Sex Pistols did get laughed at by The Damned though for "making a bad heavy metal record" though, Green Day probably do not belong though.
Who objects to Green Day being vetoed? and why? (because "I like them/want to vote for them" is not a good enough reason)
Remember that jj wants to be strict on the definitions. What do you think, John?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 15 July 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)
neither are heavy or metal. Insults from other, more-pure-than-thou bands don't qualify them as metal, either.
― blackened symphonic epic porno tech doom-core (J3ff T.), Thursday, 15 July 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)
Green Day maybe a no go, but that Sex Pistols record is heavy.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 July 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)
Would have preferred the nomenclature of the poll be "hard rock" instead of "heavy rock" fwiw. "Heavy" still implies some kind of metallic root.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 July 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
I think that was the point. Hard rock meant the stones, yardbirds etc could qualify.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 15 July 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
so our consensus here is that The Osmonds were more metal than The Rolling Stones, is what I am taking away from this
― HI DERE, Thursday, 15 July 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)
Stones, Yardbirds, etc... just seem like "rock" to me. "Hard Rock" makes me think ZZ Top, Skynyrd, Nugent, Billy Squier...and then more modern derivatives like Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, and so on.
"Metal" is whatever. Glam, Thrash, Death, Black, Speed. It's pretty broad, yet still well-defined. "Hard Rock" is the catch-all net after that. tbh, "Heavy Rock" isn't even a term I hear all that much.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 July 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't want the osmonds in the poll. KJB and Bill Magill did.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 15 July 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)
if people have objections then they have basically 27 hours left to raise them as after that it will be too late.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 15 July 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
I think I'll bow to jeff and others and veto sex pistols, no doubt there will be a punk poll along soon enough. Hardcore punk stays tho (for now). Will consult with john later when hes free.
