ok EZ Snappin is a massive hero basically and I actually got love for quite a few things on his ballot - nice #1 choice!
Davek's a bro, obv, and I can get behind most of his choices
karl clearly knows the shit out of good dance music and I will be consulting him on the topic - his top 3 is huge
hobbes' ballot I find completely unplaceable and intriguing - Cornelius! wow! good album, that. but again, loads of good dance
pfunkboy, what can I say eh? again, loads of really great stuff in there
Klata, your stance on SoS has been noted and applauded
Rudipherous, as my fellow Lansing-Dreiden voter I feel I ought to shake your hand or something
Gavin In Leeds, plenty of superb stuff (and stuff I need to check out) in yours too

OK, and so we reach mine. Not as obscure as some, but one of the outliers for sure:

LJ, I tried to hunt down that Dälek album before voting, but couldn't grab it online. I've seen them live shitloads over the years and they've always been great, but just never got around to buying that. Also, I miss their h0tt turntablist.

Would have thought Whiney might have given it LOADS of points - did he even vote? It's on Spotify if you want to give it a listen! Staggering record, inspires me with more genuine revolutionary sentiment than pretty much anything else I've heard. That sounds silly but I really don't care - it's music to march to, music to chant and cheer to.

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

and then I followed it up with a Dandy Warhols album that Pitchfork gave 1.2 to. I RULE :D

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

It doesn't sound silly to me - they are truly awesome.

Also, man, where were the props for my ballot? If nothing else, I think I was the only person to vote for all nominated Ghost Box albums (can't be arsed to check if this is true, ha).

emil.y, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

oh shit, I had the thread open from a bit earlier and it ended after Paul In Santa Cruz's! Honest!

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

*Gavin In Leeds' - I'd seen Paul's but I scrolled down only as far as Gavin's PLEASE FORGIVE ME I AM A MESS

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

Hahaha, I didn't really mind, dude.

emil.y, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

ok basically I'd have gone NUTZOID for Sleeve's ballot if I'd seen it during my Big Summing-Up - it's fucking astonishing and I need to hear SO MUCH of it. emil.y despite the A and D of GAPDY featuring prominently yours is similarly infested with groovy arty coolness. I remember that Deerhoof album being absolutely superb but not listening to it after the online stream was removed - will need to return to it! Speaking of which, PISC and I have often seen eye-to-eye on musical issues, and his ballot contains a lot of indieproggish Jaggerness (WFANFC -and- Max Tundra!) you three between you are flaming awesome and I am deeply ashamed not to have scrolled down that far while I did my write-up

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

also pretty much everything on Sleeve's ballot that made it is fucking amazing - why have I not conversed with that guy more often?

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:30 (fifteen years ago)

shame on you

Lovely choices everyone...in particular all that Fonal records stuff on Emily's ballot.

About to hit play on the first song on Blood Inside!

excellent choice mr k

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:39 (fifteen years ago)

STEEL THYSELF O DAVEK

What's the Fonal stuff? Paavofinnishfolk?

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

LJ - You know, I really like that Dandy Warhols album too. And I have to admit, Blood Inside should have made my ballot; I chose not to duplicate any artists, and between that and Shadow of the Sun I love the one I've just listened to the most and had just spun SotS. Now, having just played Blood Inside the other day I'm regretting my vote.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

I voted both

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

"Kind of pisses me off to be the only one to vote for certain albums nominated by someone other than me."

that might be my fault... which albums?

― elephant rob, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:35 (Yesterday)

Nah, it was tipsy mothra (if I recall correctly) and Mordy. I don't really mind. At least they nominated a couple albums I would have nominated otherwise, which gave me more room to nominate other things that weren't going to place either.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

LJ, one day you need to run a decade poll of bands only on independent labels. I dont believe that has ever been done.
But you gotta open it up to all genres not just indie rock.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:43 (fifteen years ago)

Fonal - Paavorharju, Es, Eleanor Rosenholm. Fits in nicely soundwise with all the freak/psyche folk stuff from around mid decade, see also Sung Tongs, Espers, Charalambides, Excepter maybe.

Ulver, um well 2.40 in and this is not what I was expecting. Where's the hailstorm black metal!?

Davek (davek_00), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

Also, Louis, I think you'd really like at least parts of Tokyo Jihen's Adult. If "Blackout" (from that album) isn't proggy, I don't know what is.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

Ulver left the BM behind long ago

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

I decided I wasn't going to do much duplication but basically Ulver are beyond reproach for me - they're like a new level of musical comprehension. Shadows Of The Sun is as intricate, beautifully-crafted and well-sequenced as Blood Inside - it doesn't have the same shock-and-awe factor or the indelibly-seared musical images, IMO, but it's still a fucking fabulous piece of music, and I also understand those who prefer its tragic subtlety to BI's severed-artery spatter.

I wasn't expecting ANYONE else to have anything nice to say about that Dandys album!! Consequently I was looking forward to smiling sweetly and refusing to defend my choice. What can I say? Sweet, sweet psych-jams meet lovely pop-songs, the whole thing's totally euphoric and spaced-out in a way no other mainstream artist quite articulated during the last decade.

I now need to listen to loads of stuff in YOUR ballot - Alcest will definitely be getting a relisten over the next few days. One of the finest shoegaze albums I've heard.

BTW, as a final message for those feeling trepidation about Blood Inside - it's POSSIBLY the most LJ album ever made. Interpret that how you will, run in fear if you like.

Oh Davek, you're in for a frigging treat in a minute...

Rudipherous - why thanks! I'm not exclusively prog, but yeah recommendation accepted with glee!

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

LJ you up for doing an independent labels album poll sometime?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

I'd need to make sure I knew what the independent labels were first! But yeah, in theory...

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

LJ - search out the Goslings. It's an eye-opener. Stuff I think you might like if you haven't heard it - Benoit Pioulard, Bloody Panda, Mono & World's End Girlfriend.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

I have LOTS (well, two albums) of Goslings on my computer so I should really probably give them a good go! A track of their came on my iPod Shuffle recently and I didn't know who it was but it was brilliant - the track as it turns out was Motorcade, a thrilling, building noise-thing with a beautiful tune hidden underneath the fuzz and fury. Should have been the spur for a proper listen - this will be.

Bloody Panda did a split with Kayo Dot, which is enough for me. (I didn't nominate Kayo Dot's Dowsing Anemone... because I'd nominated one of the tracks instead - but it'd have made my top 15). Mono I've been aware of. The other two, completely unheard of. Will make a little list!

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

Just so you know, the Mono one doesn't sound like Mono at all - the collaboration with World's End Girlfriend gets them into soundscapes and off the post-rock nowhere train. I think Bloody Panda moved way past that split into something powerful and creepy, but the sound is similar so if it didn't work for you I understand. "Motorcade" is off Occasion, which tons down the howling wall of noise and pain that is Grandeur of Hair.

LJ im sure theres plenty of people to guide you on what labels are Independent and are part owned by majors or have major label distribution deals. And you can decide what parameters you will allow.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

sorry i bolded the ones that made it, seemed to make more sense that way xpost

the dolly doctor movement (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

I think Bloody Panda moved way past that split into something powerful and creepy, but the sound is similar so if it didn't work for you I understand.

Oh, I haven't HEARD the split yet! I just know of its existence! Merely the fact that they worked WITH Kayo Dot is sufficient recommendation, is what I meant! Will definitely be listening in.

Glad you said that about Mono - I've heard they're a bit dull in a pretty way and what you said there sounds more promising.

Motorcade was still freakin' loud! Unmistakeably at the 'pop' end of noise tho

esoj's ballot reminds me I need to hear the new Field Music, urgently

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry I misread that! If it helps even more, a certain aerosmith poster loves Bloody Panda too.

This is what I wrote about the Goslings when I first heard it.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

so they're basically Einstuerzende Neubauten's HEEEEEADCLEEEEEANER prophecy fulfilled huh :D

sadly I only have Occasion and Between The Dead - will have to somehow get hold of Grandeur Of Hair

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:19 (fifteen years ago)

My friend Ian compares Between the Dead to Isn't Anything and Grandeur to Loveless, only both are darker and heavier. He prefers the former albums to the latter.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

The Goslings are amazing and so are Mono.
Grandeur of hair is prob the best

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:26 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, it was tipsy mothra (if I recall correctly) and Mordy. I don't really mind. At least they nominated a couple albums I would have nominated otherwise, which gave me more room to nominate other things that weren't going to place either.

I forgot to vote!

BTW I like the 1st 3 bright eyes albums

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

that yob album is incredible wtf are you talking about

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

Dude, since I'm not a 13 year old girl I have no idea who YOB is.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

terrible zing attempt, be ashamed

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

i don't even know what the intent of that zing was, goddamn

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

i love these threads so much for shit like lamps list. one of my favourite things to dream of is an alternate universe with a drastically different musical history or canon. consensus lists are fun but i they always tend way too close to the mean, to the point where the only aspect of interest is the occasional hiccough in between processions of the lcd soundsystems and mias.

young monet (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

Your zing of my zing was even worse. It wasn't even a zing, it was more of a zi. But what can I expect from a yob fan?

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:05 (fifteen years ago)

lol, kornrulez thinks YOB is a teenpop band

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:05 (fifteen years ago)

no zings on my part; these are straight up facts bro

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:07 (fifteen years ago)

Love seeing these ballots. The overlaps and differences say a lot about the music and the voters.

Still want to know who cast the other MY MY vote. Folks who don't know that album, I promise it's worth hearing.

My head is full of numbers from the internet! (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

lol I had you fooled. I know them to be a major influence of the doom metal scene. In fact, Mike Scheidt and I go way back. When I met him he was into Raydio and early RPJ. I turned him onto metal.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

There is no band called Yob, you are all just making this up.

I don't have my ballot in front of me, but the highest-placed noms I definitely voted for that didn't make the 100 are:

Various Artists - African Scream Contest: Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds From Benin & Togo 70s
The Clientele - Strange Geometry
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt. II
Scritti Polliti - White Bread Black Beer

Robert Wyatt - Comicopera

The three nominations that received only my lone vote (none of which I nominated myself!!!):

Gavin Bryars/Philip Jeck/ Alter Ego; Kajia Saariaho; György Kurtág

ty for the props btw LJ. lots of intriguing stuff on your's and others' ballots that i'll be checking out. love the ballots thread for getting me interested in stuff that i normally wouldn't be exposed to in my habitual ILX reading.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

Albums I voted for that didn't make it:

Breeders, Mountain Battles
Man Man, Six Demon Bag
Fiery Furnaces, Widow City
Takka Takka, s/t
Magnetic Fields, Distortion
Raveonettes, Lust Lust Lust
Jens Lekman, Night Falls over Kortedala
Coachwhips, Peanut Butter and Jelly Live at the Ginger Minge
Mountain Goats, Get Lonely
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah s/t

In retrospect, should have voted for New Pornographers, Challengers (would that have gotten it on?) and not for Clap Your Hands, think I was influenced here by a pleasant live show but remember nothing about the actual album tbh

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:43 (fifteen years ago)

xpost to Nag! Nag! Nag! Nice to see another vote for that Scritti Politti album. It was my summer album that year and easily my favourite album they've done. Shame it didn't make the list, I really didn't know if it had any other fans.

The Raveonettes - Lust Lust Lust (#138)

Taylor Swift - Fearless
Kanye West - Late Registration

Sleeve, emil.y, you guys' ballots are fantastic. Lots of other great ones as well. I think when I'm voting in these big ILM polls my ballots tend to skew toward pop, but I'm down with about 90% of the stuff on sleeve's ballot, and lots of others.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

I should've voted for Stars of the Lid. I guess I thought I hadn't listened to it enough, but it definitely has more of an impact than, like, Zomby (not Zombi).

emil.y, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

Daft Punk - Human After All (#565) (Only one other person voted for this??)

How is that surprising? Most of ILM hated it.

I bet Alive 2007 stole a couple potential Human After All votes as well.

I would change so much about my ballot. Ah well.

Born too beguiled (DavidM), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

Well I've said this before, but it's secretly their best album -- fucking steamrolls Homework flat as a pancake and it's so different from Discovery (which I also love) as to be incomparable... may as well be a different artist. But I think Human After All represents what is really special about Daft Punk. I like Discovery but it's more so the odd album out in their discography. A really fun album, but without the lushly dominant spirit that is Human After All.

(xp to Dan)

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

My biggest regret, actually, is not nominating Mika's "Life in Cartoon Motion."

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, how you Daft Punk fans are not immediately sold from the first few seconds of this track, when the drumbeat starts, then the distorted squelchy synth hits against that drumbeat, then the guitar comes in, then the vocoder'd vocals coming in... "we are human after all"... sounding more robotic than anything on Discovery, their truly "human" album... great, great tune.
