just finished listening to this first single?

they are brilliant, great new song.

Bee OK, Friday, 16 July 2010 05:53 (fifteen years ago)

like a glossier Apples in Stereo. not sure if this is a good thing, or if now's a particularly opportune moment for sunny psych-inflected 60s style pop/rock. unexpected, though.

I kind of hate this song.

song's alright but i don't really need another record that sounds like this.

The entire concept of a new Cut Copy album sends shivers down my spine.

WEB SHARIF (LOLK), Friday, 16 July 2010 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

This could be something of a red herring though. They've been namedropping Berlin-era Bowie as an influence in interviews.

Number None, Friday, 16 July 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

yeah , i love the song but hope it's just a one off single

i can't really see how this would fit into an album unless it were some psychedelic journey, so here's hoping they don't go that route

altered boners (rennavate), Monday, 19 July 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

Makes sense to me. There's always been a Fleetwood Mac/ELO side to them (art-MOR?) in addition to the dance stuff.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 July 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

I just listened to it again. I don't kind of hate this song anymore. I've decided instead to just ignore it and let it be. I have no attachment to Cut Copy anyway, so if they want to write songs like this one, why should I care?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 July 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

It sounds like they read Pitchfork.

billstevejim, Monday, 19 July 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

I made it a minute and a half in. Does it ever do anything except that boring meandering schaffel beat?

it doesn't even sound like the Beach Boys, to be honest. It sounds like a wanky Animal Collective styled "remake" of Rock N Roll Part 1 and really, the KLF did the only remake of that you ever need to hear.

The Black Knight! Huzzah, My Lord! (Masonic Boom), Monday, 19 July 2010 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

It sounds like a wanky Animal Collective styled "remake" of Rock N Roll Part 1

yes

billstevejim, Monday, 19 July 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

Except I think I mean Rock N Roll Part 2. D'oh!

The Black Knight! Huzzah, My Lord! (Masonic Boom), Monday, 19 July 2010 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

I know what you meant.. As if the world needs more songs with the same drums as "S.O.S." and "If You Seek Amy," like that hasn't been done enough in the past 4 years...

What a bunch of bullshit.. They went from In Ghost Colors to THIS? Seriously?

billstevejim, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

It sounds like a wanky Animal Collective styled "remake" of Rock N Roll Part 1

Ha, I actually like it better with this in mind.

jaymc, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

I might need some time to digest it, but once upon a time I loved "Far Away" "Hearts On Fire" and "So Haunted" immediately..

billstevejim, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

It's so long lead I can only imagine this single is some slight misdirection. The band knows which side of the bread its butter is on.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

saw them yesterday and they played this and of course the crowd was '...'

just sayin, Monday, 19 July 2010 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, this track is a terrible let-down from in ghost colors. they seem like a fairly savvy band; is there some way releasing this song as misdirection could be read as a smart move?

sounds like yall hate fun

Anticipating The Nation - High Islam (LOLK), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

Well, as far as diffusing any hype, it could work as misdirection. I think more bands should cobble together and leak tracks that throw people off the scent, then drop something completely different come the actual day. Like, up to the last minute I wished the LCD album would feature a different mix on the final product.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 July 2010 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

sounds like they bought the Beatles box and then got 'inspired' to record a new album.

Ew.

On the extremely short list of rock stars I do NOT want to see naked, they're pretty high up.

Is Mick Jagger the single most unattractive man to ever become a sex symbol or what?

I figured that was the most famous "Brown Sugar" sleeve image..

billstevejim, Monday, 26 July 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 July 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

I generally like skinny dudes, but Jagger is pidgeonchested in a really really unattractive way. Combined with the toothpick arms and little girl legs, it's just... no. nononononononnoonoooo no.

still contemplating my 'tim goldsworthy is secret ingredient / genius' theory. anybody know if he's involved with the new album?

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 26 July 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

wtf is this song?

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 26 July 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

sounds like a poor attempt to approximate psych-y era beatles/beach-boys. not a good sound for this band. not a sound anyone needs to do again. also, represents the first time i've heard anything reminding me of the beatles in years. blech. thankfully, you just don't hear the beatles anymore.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 26 July 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

"Sounds like the beatles" usually means "sounds like Oasis" in most contexts i've heard over the past 10 years... (like when Jet tried to "sound like the beatles" but really just sounded like Oasis.. etc...)

billstevejim, Monday, 26 July 2010 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

still contemplating my 'tim goldsworthy is secret ingredient / genius' theory. anybody know if he's involved with the new album?

Don’t know anything for sure, but it seems very unlikely if they’ve been working on it in a Melbourne warehouse and not going to London. (Anyway, he didn’t have anything to do with I Thought Of Numbers or the good singles off the second album.

yes, and the same criticism applies. the world needs no new oasis. if we did need one, coldplay would happily oblige.

i liked cut copy's last album a lot, but didn't understand why some people love it so passionately (i did get that they sounded like a new new-order, and i fully supported that). listening to this horrible new song gives me a new perspective on how good they were before.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:11 (fifteen years ago)

this just sounds like an incredibly deflated retread of the last album (which i loved). i think ghost colors did a good job of alternating between this listless mood and bits that punched in a little bit, swept things up, credibly raved out. hardly any such moments on this one, imo.

i mean, yknow, lol taste and all that. i guess i just cant understand how ppl rep for like, the xx & james blake but are all wishy washy about these guys. this record is more consistent than the last one. i like how 'pharoahs and pyramids' basically shows H&LA how to properly incorporate house textures & styles into music ... that track vs 'my house' is like no conest

oh yeah, so haunted is the off-key elo-ish song. thanks, billstevejim.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 16 January 2011 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's unfair to expect/insist on songs that replicate the feel of the previous album. Ghost Colours will forever be their best album. This new one is also very good but it's just not as immediate as the last. After a few times through and some basic song recognition, I'm really enjoying Zonoscope. I assume you would have bitched about Low-Life not having anything like Blue Monday or Your Silent Face too.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 16 January 2011 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

I assume you would have bitched about Low-Life not having anything like Blue Monday or Your Silent Face too.

Low-Life has "The Perfect Kiss," though! I've just gone back and listened to both, and it's not just that there's nothing here as good as "So Haunted"--there's nothing here as good as ANY of the proper songs (not interludes) from the last album. I'll give this some more listens, but so far I can't see how it's anything but a big disappointment after Ghost Colours.

i like this album listening experience, overall, more than in ghost colours, 100% -- there just nothing as immediately banging as 'hearts on fire' & 'lights and music' but overall many of these songs are just as good imho

*gets the power* (deej), Sunday, 16 January 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

I can see where you're coming from but I still think it's unfair to expect them to match the last album. It was just packed front to back with amazing songs. I think this one is also good but Ghost Colours is Cut Copy's masterpiece and will never be equalled. We shouldn't expect another album as good as that one. I think Zonoscope will be a grower.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 16 January 2011 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 16 January 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

"some basic song recognition" otm. it's just less immediate. give it a handful of rounds - things snap into place and get terribly infectious as always. it's a little less anthem and more atmosphere throughout (barring Pharaohs, which I think is as big as anything they've done). LOVE the use of guitar feedback as padding. Love the many vocal attitudes and hooky mantras (Sun God's "you've got to LIVE"). Tons to chew on here and it keeps getting better.

anza, Sunday, 16 January 2011 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno all these songs hit me as awesome immediately.

*gets the power* (deej), Sunday, 16 January 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

does this album have an 'out there on the ice'?

they do that sort of dynamic build/release thing really well but the last album only had a couple tracks that pulled it off effectively

ciderpress, Sunday, 16 January 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

At its worst this thing sounds like Thompson Twins fronting Simple Minds.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 16 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, at its best it sort of sounds like Thompson Twins fronting Simple Minds, too! With a bit of '80s Buckingham Mac as well, of course.

I don't think this album is nearly as good as "In Ghost Colours," an album I still listen to pretty religiously, but it hits the spot nonetheless. It feels, sensibly, like another chapter in an ongoing story.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 16 January 2011 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

― brotherlovesdub,

Yeah you're completely spot on, at about 4 minutes into Need You Know song he just turns into Andy Mccluskey.

After a couple of plays I'm really impressed. I think the album really kicks in with the last 2 minutes of Pharaohs & Pyramids and doesn't let up after that. I hadn't heard Where I'm Going before now but I really hate it, I really don't know what they were thinking putting it out as the first single.

dayo, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

in fact, I would describe their influence on this record as being 'mountainous'

dayo, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:24 (fifteen years ago)

i would describe your reading comprehension as 'nonexistent'

*gets the power* (deej), Monday, 17 January 2011 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

do u have an opinion on the record or are u just into riding stale zings

*gets the power* (deej), Monday, 17 January 2011 04:40 (fifteen years ago)

i think it sounds like led zeppelin

dayo, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

so the latter

Great album. "Take Me Over" reminds us that they are from a land down under.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 17 January 2011 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

just abandoning the 'expectations game' here completely - imo this is a classic

Doesn't even sound like Cut Copy. It's a good EP but it's ridiculous to say it's the best Cut Copy album. Wish I hadn't even taken the bait now.

putting this on and I'm disappointed 'need you now' isn't a lady antebellum cover...yet

dayo, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

ha -- a friend sent me a text message on Saturday: "`Need You Now' is SO incredible." Since he hates pop music, I thought he'd come around to the wondrousness of that Lady Antebellum single.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

I revisited 'in ghost colours' recently and it didn't blow me away as much as it did back when I first heard it - dunno if my taste have changed or if I just overrated to begin with. the hooks just didn't seem as huge.

so far this is pleasant...but I can't get the phrase "clap your hands say yeah with slightly pitched down vocals" out of my head

feels like sloppy pastiche at times, but it's a sloppy pastiche of stuff I totally love. OMD track, Lindstrom track, Add Some Music to My Day vocals, ELO, Cowley electronics, it feels personally made for me. Hope it all comes together.

skip, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a sucker for "Blink and You'll Miss a Revolution." In fact, I'm a sucker for all of this. Sure, it's not as good as the last one, but not many records of its ilk are. I wouldn't expect New Order to release more than one "Technique," and I wouldn't expect another "In Ghost Colours" from Cut Copy. Just not fair to the band.

(Now, I bet Lindsey Buckingham could have made another "Tango in the Night," but by then he was done with the band.)

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

In Ghost Colours was certainly not at Technique's level.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

Honestly, aside from Cut Copy not being New Order, I rate them pretty similarly, though perhaps for different reasons.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

This album is much more sonically and stylistically varied than In Ghost Colours which was very immediate and concentrated but also samey - it took time for me to differentiate the great songs. This one is going to take time in a different way. Or maybe the tempos are just slower.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

cut copy has a similar sound and vibe to new order (upthread, i called them nu-new order). but i'm not sure how much of that comparison represents my desire to see new acts as updated versions of acts i loved in my youth.

i'm sure all us children of the late 70s -- 80s could compile such a list -- e.g., the nu-joy division (interpol); the nu-elo (new pornos or super furry animals) -- but it's kind of a pointless and self-absorbed endeavor.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 18 January 2011 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

not that i'm against being pointless or self-absorbed!

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 18 January 2011 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

New Order are goofier and less apt to lapse into aural sameness.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 23:33 (fifteen years ago)

This is enjoyable enough but I'm not sure it really lives up to the promise of the first two tracks. Those two tracks are great though.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 January 2011 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

I like "Alisa," "Take Me Over," "Blink And You'll Miss A Revolution," and will take an edited version of "Need You Now" if one exists.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 January 2011 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

i think 'with every heartbeat' is the best track personally

i guess i should go back & read the thread, but in short: is this any good? i'd be interested to hear it the less it resembles, say, MGMT and other "indie electronic" acts... more so actual synth-pop & dance music.

what say you?

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

i like it. it's pretty catchy i found and i'm still listening to it a few weeks after first hearing it

It's insubstantial apart from a couple of tracks.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

I don't hear any MGMT, but I feel like this is their most varied yet (bear in mind, I'm only one listen in at this point). I hear some Depeche Mode and other 80s touchstones, but also a few throwbacks to the 60s and 70s as well.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

was enjoying this over the weekend, nice summer record - first track's good, 'alisa' is good, 'pharaohs + pyramids' good too. some of second half is less memorable but it does flow along nicely, i didn't have the urge to turn it off or anything. the 'everywhere' rip is a bit gross.

I heard Cut Copy for the first time on the radio this morning. I think I heard a remix of theirs a few years ago, and I really didn't remember what they sounded like. "Need You Know" is the song I heard and I thought it was new OMD. Anyway, I think it's a pretty good song.

van smack, Thursday, 24 February 2011 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

I like the album. This even though "So Haunted" (the verse in particular) sounds a bit too harsh to me, a bit too Killing Joke/Magazine/Wire wannabe, and even though I like those three bands, they weren't really what I expect Cut/Copy to be about.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Friday, 25 February 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

i think the central thesis of tom b.'s pfork review (that they've become a full on dance band) is right, but it has def come at the expense of their songs qua songs. cuz this record sounds good and it sounds "right" but after the first two songs nothing sticks imo

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 February 2011 06:44 (fourteen years ago)

This album isn't as disappointing as has been made out, but the live show is really lacking. "Sun God" just doesn't work as a live jam, it's too ambling and drifting to not get boring. It's a shame, I saw them touring when In Ghost Colours came out and it was one of the best gigs I've been to.

o0o00h really? (boxedjoy), Friday, 4 March 2011 12:35 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i dont really get the muted response around here, unless my enthusiasm put people off or something. this is still one of the strongest releases ive heard this year, certainly in terms of songwriting (i dont know how you can say 'nothing sticks' beyond the first two songs ... the first track is the song i play back the least & 'pharoahs & pyramids" & for the last time "hanging on to every heartbeat" are great, memorable, well written & timeless tracks??) but idk maybe its the ilx sausage party thing cuz i was surprised to find on the last.fm gender chart that cut copy cut 70% female fanbase or something like that

deej, Monday, 7 March 2011 03:30 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah but plenty of (male) people on here loved their last album.

Number None, Monday, 7 March 2011 04:07 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i dunno, the critical response elsewhere seemed pretty enthusiastic tho to this one

although, maybe the last one also was a grower for folks?

deej, Monday, 7 March 2011 04:09 (fourteen years ago)

I think most people were pretty enthusiastic for In Ghost Colours right off the bat. Feels like this one was anticipated heavily and then when it came out people just stopped talking about it. I can't get into at all personally.

Number None, Monday, 7 March 2011 04:17 (fourteen years ago)

i still need to listen to this--was never enamored with them before but some of the enthusiasm in here got me interested

who are 'people'?

deej, Monday, 7 March 2011 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

Nah, I've always thought they were just okay beyond a couple of singles per album.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 March 2011 12:04 (fourteen years ago)

Ppl were more enthusiastic about In Ghost Colours because it's much much better. This one feels a bit laboured and even Sun God doesn't quite take off in the way it should.

Matt DC, Monday, 7 March 2011 12:15 (fourteen years ago)

People i know, People on the internet. People.

Number None, Monday, 7 March 2011 12:54 (fourteen years ago)

the only thing i prefer abt it is the production does sound better w/ goldsworthy but the songwriting is still more consistent on this one imo. outside of the big singles on 'ghost colours' i dont think its nearly as good

and alfred, based on the tracks you told ppl were 'representative' of this record's sound, it doesnt sound like you've given much of a shot to the rest of this record either, like, this is representative the same way 'livin a lie' was

deej, Monday, 7 March 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

Heard it four times, picked my two standouts. S'all I need.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 March 2011 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

Very sorry to disappoint you.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 March 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

think the problem is that you said they were representative, not that they were standouts

just sayin, Monday, 7 March 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

Fair enough. Standout tracks can be representative, but representative tracks aren't always standouts (e.g. "Sun God").

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 March 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

"In Ghost Colours" was also a great album, but so heavily compressed I actually have trouble listening to it. "Zonoscope" is better in that respect.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 7 March 2011 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

groovypanda, Saturday, 2 April 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

The Holy Ghost! album is like Cut Copy with weaker songs and more cheese, all formalist replication but little inspiration, IMO.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 2 April 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

Nowt wrong with a bit of cheese. Also, weaker songs? Couldn't sing a hook off the Cut Copy record if you payed me.

timbo slice (D-40), Saturday, 2 April 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

I really wanted to like this album, just find it a chore for whatever reason. It seems kind of telling that you're one of the few people on this thread who is really enthusiastic about it. It's obviously missing something that In Ghost Colours wasn't.

Number None, Saturday, 2 April 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

whatever its missing its not 'hooks'

timbo slice (D-40), Saturday, 2 April 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

I was one of those who felt slightly disappointed with Zonoscope when I first heard it, with In Ghost Colours being one of my all-time favorite albums. But when I went to rate the individual songs in itunes for a playlist I created, I realized that I loved almost every song (I counted two as stinkers - one was a short instrumental, iirc).
