Please tell me the Smiths will not beat Eno

tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Friday, 16 July 2010 13:30 (fifteen years ago)

This one is tricky. I voted Public Enemy, Stevie Wonder, The Smiths, Steely Dan. PE over VU is a tough choice. I don't know much about Kraftwerk & only know Stevie Wonder's big singles, but I like those singles so I chose Stevie Wonder. I like the Smiths & Eno quite a bit & can't really defend my choice, basically just a coin flip. Then the Dan over Prince: brutal, esp. since I have a huge pile of Prince bootlegs in my queue for the next few days. I can't really justify that choice either, but difficult times call for difficult votes, I'm the decider, and I decide what is best.

Public Enemy, Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Prince

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 16 July 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

VU / PE - VU easy
Stevie Wonder / Kraftwerk - Stevie easy
Eno / Smiths - Eno sorta easy? I love The Smiths like a total fanboy, would vote for them over 75% of this poll, but they just can't compare w/ the things Eno did in his 70s run.
Steely Dan / Prince - uhhhhhhh

iatee, Friday, 16 July 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

This is getting more difficult.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 16 July 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

Interestingly, two of my votes in this round are for acts that I didn't vote for in the previous round.

ILM is the only place I've heard Eno so regularly praised for his own music and not his collaborative or production work. Except for a track here or there I don't get the appeal myself.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 July 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

ILM is the only place I've heard Eno so regularly praised for his own music and not his collaborative or production work

No way

VU vs. PE is totally impossible.

ILM is the only place I've heard Eno so regularly praised for his own music and not his collaborative or production work

No way

Yes way. Literally no one I know gives a toss for Eno's solo stuff, and though they acknowledge his ambient stuff was groundbreaking they don't care.

Might be a US v. UK thing, I don't know.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 July 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

I was just coming here to post that! I think it could be.

tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Friday, 16 July 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

The Smiths vs Eno is hard. I listen to Eno much more than The Smiths nowadays, but, y'know, I was a mopey mancunian teenage boy once and those loyalties die hard. damn, what to do?

as for the others, easy peasy... VU, Stevie, Prince.

sometimes all it takes is a healthy dose of continental indiepop (tomofthenest), Friday, 16 July 2010 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

Public Enemy, Stevie Wonder, Brian Eno, Prince

Here's where I become an Eno fan. I only have Another Green World in my possession but have nothing by the Smiths. There are, at least, five more Eno albums that I need to get a hold of. Maybe I could grab a greatest hits comp by the Smiths, but that would be it for me.

strong boy burger (KMS), Friday, 16 July 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

Still amazed that Lex went for VU over PE. The last person I'd have had as a Velvets fan.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Friday, 16 July 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not a huge huge fan but i like what i've heard, i like nico's solo stuff and i'm not a huge PE fan either. could've gone either way & don't really care about that choice.

i don't care about eno particularly but i HATE the smiths and they must die, or get knocked out, or whatever these polls are deciding.

still pissed off @ the injustice of madonna going out in the first round. to the motherfucking beatles of all people.

iatee, Friday, 16 July 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

P.E, Kraftwerk, Smiths, Prince.

Kraftwerk/S Wonder the only one that really gave me pause. Out of all the possible permutations of these 8, Public Enemy/Smiths would be almost impossible for me to choose between. Hatful of Hollow (yeah I know technically a compilation) and It Takes A Nation Of Millions are probably my 2 most played albums of my entire life.

Eljero Elia Michele (pandemic), Friday, 16 July 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

Kraftwerk would be probably good at drawing up plays in advance, but be horrible at improvising when one of those plays didn't go as planned.

Stevie can play a drumset, so I think he could take Kraftwerk, especially when they sent out mannequins to play for them.

Velvet Underground, Stevie Wonder, Brian Eno, Prince

Prince/Steely Dan is the only hard one tbh.

sofatruck, Friday, 16 July 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that was the only one that gave me pause.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Friday, 16 July 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

Velvet Underground, Stevie Wonder, The Smiths, Prince. Count me among the boring consensus that thinks Eno is more interesting as a producer and a member of Roxy Music than as a solo artist (though I like many of his solo albums just fine, just not nearly as much The Queen is Dead or Louder Than Bombs. None of these are too hard for me. I love Steely Dan, but Prince is another magnitude of brilliance, and I listen to Dirty Mind more than any Steely album.

MumblestheRevelator, Friday, 16 July 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

PE, Kraftwerk, Eno, Dan

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 July 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

Public Enemy, Stevie Wonder, Brian Eno, Steely Dan

If Steely Dan go out this round it won't be so bad, no shame in losing out to Prince. I used to love The Smiths and still like them a lot but Eno's solo stuff has meant so much more to me these past five years or so.

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 16 July 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 16 July 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

I had definitely heard of Eno a shit-ton before I ever read ILM, but I wasn't into glam or Bowie or U2, so I never checked him out. It's not like they ever played him on the radio ever though. Now, I like the ambient stuff and I kinda dig the Bowie albums.

kkvgz, Friday, 16 July 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

ever

Except in terms of U2.

kkvgz, Friday, 16 July 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

yes, his medal was "basically the most agreed upon artist of the 70s by the most popular music criticism site in the world" and that sorta disqualifies him from just being some ilx thing.

iatee, Friday, 16 July 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

Never really followed Pitchfork consensus, so maybe it's been a shift in just the just the last few years that's elevated his status as a solo artist, or I'm just confusing strong personal preferences for general critical opinion (oh no, not that again Jesus), since I'd rather listen to most Roxy Music albums, Remain in Light, or 'Heroes' than any Eno album, and find it weird other people wouldn't.

MumblestheRevelator, Friday, 16 July 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

Stuff like this Eno talk (I wish I could find the actual audio, which I think had examples unless I'm mixing it up with another Eno talk) was pretty mind-blowing to me at the time:

http://music.hyperreal.org/artists/brian_eno/interviews/downbeat79.htm

(Not that I don't also like some of his solo albums, collaborations, and other people's albums he produced.)

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 18 July 2010 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

(Yeah, I may have heard a variant on this basic theme. It seems some things are missing here, while others I don't remember.)

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 18 July 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

There are other examples of things I do with loops and editing based on fairly simple material, to get singular, very rare events I couldn't have forseen. But perhaps I should mention that you only have control of your studio composition to the pressing plant - then the reproduction is completely arbitrary. So when I mix a record, I mix on at least two speaker systems - and often more than two - so I'm not mixing just for optimum conditions. Most of my records don't sound good in optimum conditions, where there are very large speakers which are extremely well balanced and have lots of high and low frequencies. I mix, really, for what I imagine most people have medium-priced hi-fi - and for radio a bit as well. It's the very naive producer who works only on optimum systems.

he's always been making music for ipods

Oh I'm not disputing that these people made very good records. I'm just fucking annoyed that white guitar acts from the sixties/early seventies seem to be all anyone is interested in lauding.

So sad to see Steely Dan go down in flames. I guess Prince is alright though... ;>)

some people are saying the most retarded things.

the cream always flows to the top. if ILM wasn't predictable, sometimes, than it wouldn't hold its weight.
