Please read this before voting
Rules:
You can choose between 15-50 Albums and 15-50 tracks from the nominations that are posted below. Please COPY & PASTE from the nominations list. So we avoid multiple entries with spelling mistakes.

Please send a separate email for your tracks & albums ballot to make life for John (who is tabulating) much easier.
Mark the subject as "ILM Metal Tracks" and "ILM Metal Albums" and enter your list RANKED in order from top to bottom.
Please DO NOT put a number beside the votes. Just simply follow the following format:
Band - Album
Band - Album
Band - Album
and
Band - Track
Band - Track
Band - Track
and so on. Again a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 50.

the email address is ilmalltimemetalpoll at gmail dot com

Thanks to all who took the time to nominate!
The voting period ends Monday August 2nd at 11.59pm UK Time. This should hopefully give John enough time to tabulate and get the tracks results rolled out the following Monday (9th)

Happy Voting!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

Feel free to campaign for tracks and albums in this thread, but post all youtubes on YOUTUBE Companion thread for ILM METAL/HEAVY ROCK TRACKS POLL
so this thread will load OK.

Thank you everyone!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 02:18 (fifteen years ago)

And if there's any questions John & I will be happy to answer.

1 track ballot and 2 album ballots in already!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

How are the points being assigned? 50, 49, 48, 47... and so on?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 17 July 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

Yup.
Even if you only nominate 20 albums or tracks the #1 still gets 50 points and so on

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

Oh and when you vote, you should get an auto-reply from John & I. If you don't, then you better mention it here.
Also when you vote you should say so here to keep thread bumped.

This is going to be interesting as I have no idea what will win each poll.
But feel free to campaign for votes for albums/songs here or just muse about your fave albums/tracks.
I hope this is going to be a lot of fun.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

Just sent my albums ballot. Tracks will take a little more deliberation, so look for it in a coupla days.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 17 July 2010 03:29 (fifteen years ago)

Got it, Thanks!!

I haven't even thought about mine yet. I will do it saturday evening perhaps.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 03:34 (fifteen years ago)

So your number one choice goes at the top, yes?

rhythm fixated member (chap), Saturday, 17 July 2010 11:59 (fifteen years ago)

Yes,
#1
#2
#3
etc

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

All done. But y'all knew that already.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 17 July 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

Sent it in. Didn't spent an inordinate amount of time on it. Basically grabbed 50 albums from the nom list that I love and tried to figure out an order.

Mordy, Saturday, 17 July 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I think that's how I'm going to have to approach it.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Saturday, 17 July 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

Done. At least two of my track nominations are missing from the list:

Prince - Fury
Pearl Jam - Brain of J

I've given them a vote anyway, but I guess their chances are probably well & truly scuppered, if they had any.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 17 July 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

My tracks and albums ballots are in! I haven't gotten my auto reply for the tracks list though.

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Saturday, 17 July 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

I got them, Possibly it wont reply if you already got one for the albums list?
Got both of Ismael's too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

I'ma do a write-in vote for Scandal Featuring Patty Smyth: "The Warrior"

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 17 July 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

You know that's just shootin' at the walls of heartache.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 17 July 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

If I survive...

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 17 July 2010 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

I suppose I should try starting on my lists now.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

Ok done my 50 albums. I wasn't paying attention and missed the nominations bit, so couldn't get a couple of my favourites in, but c'est la vie.

ears are wounds, Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

album list sent; auto-reply received.

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

got it, thank you!

I had an idea, I wish I had thought of earlier. I wish I had limited voting to a max of 1 album per band. That could really have shook things up, but oh well.

Johnny Fever can run with that next year in his alternate poll!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

yeah my album ballot's not going to be very long and i'm thinking of just limiting it to one album per band except for probably Zep; and not even necessarily my favorite by each but the hardest/heaviest

some dude, Saturday, 17 July 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

Oh you can vote for more than one it's ok. Just pick your 50 favourites from the list of 1000+ nominated albums! If you need more time to finalise it. it's fine. You got 2 weeks.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 17 July 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, initially i tried limiting it to two albums max per artist, but found that i wasn't too happy with the results i got as such. so on came the zep-sab-mtrhed-ac/dc onslaught. i iz predictable. >:\

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Saturday, 17 July 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

ps '70s rulez!

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Saturday, 17 July 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

Tracks is hard.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 18 July 2010 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i'm whittling my list down very slowly. probably for the best that i slacked on nominating more than a couple or it'd be even harder.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Sunday, 18 July 2010 11:14 (fifteen years ago)

whoah 13 albums ballots and 5 tracks ballots. Quick work everyone and THANKYOU!

hey aldo, it appears it only auto-replies the once. But both are here.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

I am a slacker, I haven't done a tracks ballot yet. I guess I can do that now. Even if i dont feel to well today (better than yesterday)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

trying to resist just voting for all the sabbath/zep tracks tbh

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

not too bad, got it cut to 56. Just need to ponder on what 6 goes.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I found tracks much easier too. Had it below 100 on the first pass.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Sunday, 18 July 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

I got it done. half of my choices were canonical that I couldn't leave out and the rest was stuff that's personal but probably wont place or if they do, not very high. So I shoved them up front.
Much easier than the albums poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

haha someone just sent in an extreme doom/sludge/funeral ballot.
At least he didn't call me a hipster though :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

"funeral ballot" may be the most evocative accidental/incidental word combination I've seen in quite some time

magic ksh (some dude), Sunday, 18 July 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

funeral doom, al.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

I'm going to listen to some of the albums on his ballot, so if you don't see me for a while then you know it's made me even more miserable than usual ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

14 album ballots and 6 tracks ballots so far btw. Nice going everyone!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

i made the connection that funeral is a metal subgenre, i'm just saying "funeral ballot" is a great phrase.

magic ksh (some dude), Sunday, 18 July 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

If we get a huge amount of ballots will the poll end up possibly being longer than 100? like to 150, or 200?

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Sunday, 18 July 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

Well it wont cause any more work for john, so if we get enough 50 ballot votes and there aren't any 1 vote albums in the top 150/200 then it wont be a problem but only because it's an alltime poll. Would be nice to highlight some of the loved but more obscure stuff.
But it all depends on the results so I cant decide til they come in.

So get voting ladies & gentlemen.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

That will be for the albums poll. The tracks poll will be 50-100 max depending on the amount of votes.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

I will say up front that I am kind of amazed how both of mine turned out, the Tracks poll in particular which has a completely WTF top 10. At least the albums one looks like someone could actually think it was true.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Sunday, 18 July 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

I decided to do mine fast - though it still took at least an hour - after spending bloody ages on lj's 90s poll then nothing showing up. Was pretty happy with it, 'til I stuck ac/dc on this morning and suffered MAJOR voter's remorse.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 18 July 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

I am saying nothing until I can post my votes and you all call me a mentalist.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Sunday, 18 July 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

as long as you dont give too much away on your ballots, why not try boosting some lesser known albums on here, some folks will take 2 weeks to do their lists.

Talk about classic metal!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

Looking at that doom dudes list I mentioned, I totally wish I'd voted for the Warning album. I hadn't played it in ages and forgot how amazing it was.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

ismael you can change your ballot if you want, just send the full list again and I'll delete the first one. Nothing has been added to a spreadsheet or anything, that doesnt happen til nearer the end.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 22:15 (fifteen years ago)

I allow this on the EOY polls and so does musically, everyone always forgets something.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks, but that way madness lies - I'm still pretty happy with it, and have faith in ilm's good taste to see ac/dc all right

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 18 July 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

well im sure they will do ok.
I changed 1 album on mine, stuck it just inside the top 20 and bumped everything down 1 place, dropped the last album off the list. So nothing major. You can always try that method to avoid madness.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

I do wish that I had weighted the poll a bit. Like #s40-50 all get 10 points.
I will discuss it with john. I think i need to hand him over the ballots with the points in a column so it wont cause him hassle i dont think, but i'll see what he says. Glenn told me before weighting results dont make it any different to run the poll. so we'll see.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

41-50 that is

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

Ok, it wont cause any extra work, so all albums from 41-50 will get 10 points allocated to them. 1-40 will still get the 50,49,48 points and so on.

So I think it's a fairer system and filling out your top 50 will mean the tail end votes will still count.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 July 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

if i thought people wouldnt object i would have gave 31-40 20 points each

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

I object to the 10 point thing - it makes any thought about those albums irrelevant. I like my 42nd album more than my 48th.

Just leave well enough alone.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 July 2010 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

I dont want a 50 point gap between points, it gives other albums a fairer chance of placing.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

But if everyone wants it scrapped I'll scrap it, but it is much fairer imo and the gap wont be so much.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

I disagree, but it's your poll. Just seems unnecessary - if people liked those albums they would place them higher, thus giving them a fairer chance to place.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 July 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)

if you're doing a 50 album list from 1000+ nominations , it doesn't seem fair that some albums are treated as an afterthought that gets 1 or 2 points and wont affect the results at all.
You are ranking your list so your no 42 is still ranked ahead of the 48 and at the end you will post your ballot and everyone can see what you thought was best.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)

Plus some of us struggled to cut the list to 50. For myself at least , the album that was #50 wasnt 50 points better than the #1.
I can just as easy change it to 60 points for #1 and #50 will get 10 points. But I dont think the gap should be 50 points. I want every vote to count. an album getting 1 point doesnt mean much.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

Well, why has every recent poll done 40 from 1000+ and no one has ever raised this issue? If you want them to affect the results you place them higher. Very simple. Why weight them at all if you want the results affected? Just rank 'em by # of votes and be done with it (actually, doing a top 10 of each decade that way could be interesting).

But do what you want - you're doing the work, you get to decide whatever rules you want, like lj did in that alt-90s thing.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 July 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

In other polls actually, people avoid it by doing an unranked list and every album gets 20.5 points iirc.
In the metal polls we do it 40-1 I think. I dont really want unranked lists.

But this is an alltime poll and i want it to be a bit different to the EOY polls.
In an EOY poll your top 40 will be of different quality as its taken from one year. This particular poll is your top 50 albums from all time. For some people all 50 albums might feel of similar quality to them, or not too much between them.
Your 1-40 albums will still be getting more points than 41-50.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

Like I said, Doowutchyalike. Just said me piece, washed my hands of it, etc.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 July 2010 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

Glenn agreed with me when i asked him about it first. And I trust his judgement with him being the stats king.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

What glenn just said to me now

assigning points starting at 60 preserves differentiation all the way down, but reduces the ratio of #1 to #50 to 6, rather than 50

How about that as a compromise?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

Makes sense to me.

Sundar, Monday, 19 July 2010 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

oops i just saw this:

Gorgoroth - Destroyer
Gorgoroth - How to Philosophize with the Hammer

i think i may have nom'd this. it isn't two albums, it's one called Destroyer (or About How to Philosophize with the Hammer). sorry!

marc iv, Monday, 19 July 2010 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

Ok thanks for that. Maybe a mod reading this will fix it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

album list sent! whooo!

everyone better vote for the song 1970 by boris, that is all i have to say.

marc iv, Monday, 19 July 2010 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

Got it. I assume you mean you are going to be sending a tracks list in soon?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

2 weeks to go already! ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 13:21 (fifteen years ago)

so everyone with sundar,glenn & I that

assigning points starting at 60 preserves differentiation all the way down, but reduces the ratio of #1 to #50 to 6, rather than 50

is the fair way to go?
EZ?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 13:42 (fifteen years ago)

Fine with me. I just really didn't like the idea of breaking differentiation.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 July 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

True descending point scale worked just fine for the polls J0rdan and I just did, and with 10 or 20 slots dedicated to the same amount of points on your ballots will inevitably lead to more ties when you count down the results, but you're running this thing.

Personally, I don't mind giving something on my ballot a single point. Or two points. Or three points. I realize I'm working with a list of 50, and I've gone to the trouble of putting things in an order I'm happy with. Now I guess I can just throw the bottom 2/5ths of my list together pretty randomly.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 July 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

No not at all johnny. It works like this:
#1 - 60 points
#2 - 59 points
#3 - 58 points etc

#41 - 19 points
#42 - 18 points
#43 - 17 points

#49 - 11 points
#50 - 10 points

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

o i c

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 July 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

I'll repost what Glenn said explaining why.

assigning points starting at 60 preserves differentiation all the way down, but reduces the ratio of #1 to #50 to 6, rather than 50

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

It is much fairer and means your later part of the ballot is now worth it, as they get rewarded with more than a paltry point, but there is still differentiation.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

I assume everyone is happy now, so who wishes to stan for some albums? (don't reveal your ballots or # placings but recommend albums for folks to check out, like I totally forgot about that Warning album and got reminded)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

What's the consensus on Slayer? I know people stan hard for the first few, but Seasons in the Abyss = their masterpiece imo. Am I alone here?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not a thrash guy, so can't comment. Liked it as a teen and just don't care anymore.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I think it's their best. The early ones are awesomely effective, but a bit too one-note.

xpost - and just realised I forgot to vote for it. Oh well.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Monday, 19 July 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

I do hope people don't overlook Wino's best band, Spirit Caravan. Jug Fulla Sun is flat-out amazing.

Also, Riot seems to have fallen through the cracks of history. They were tearing it up in a sorta NWOBHM way before that wave even crested, and the immortal "Swords & Tequila" was ripped off by everyone. Just check out this video.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 July 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

I still prefer vitus & obsessed over Spirit Caravan, but that may be because I got into them first, just before Spirit Caravan. I for one would love to see all bands make the poll, but it's up to you guys voting.

But it's real nice to see you guys repping for lesser known stuff!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, I've tried a couple of times now and it keeps happening. Something's up with gmail. I'll give it another go tomorrow.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Monday, 19 July 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

ok, yours is the only ballot I've got today so I dont know if its just a problem with you or a general problem.

I listened today for the first time in a while to the two things in my ballot that I was the most wtf about (#3 and #4, those in the know) and you know what? I was right.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

I still cant believe you voted for Spocks Beard and Vixen, but whatever floats yer boat.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

SOMEBODY HAS JUST SUGGESTED TO ME THEY BOTH SOUND LIKE J-POP.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

Have just voted in the albums poll, my ballot is packed with false metal, grunge and classic rock, sorry ILM troo metal doodz!

Neil S, Monday, 19 July 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

only 6 tracks ballots so far, but i think everyone wants to do their albums list first so plenty of time.
fwiw i found it much easier whittling down to 50 than with the albums.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

the 60 to 10 plan sounds fine. we start with 60 and go down until their list stops right? If they have a shorter list the 1st entry is still 60? then:

59
58
57
...

rite?

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

I still think we might have to make this a top 150...

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, 60 points for #1 down to 10 points for #50.

I'd love to do a top 150 or 200 (so the lesser known albums get a bit of spotlight before the canon dominates) but it all depends on how many ballots we get. But if it's possible then it's no prob for me. John will (hopefully) present me with full results via the software so its no extra work for him whether its 100,150,200. But dont even think about asking for a rundown from 500.
Full results will be posted at the end as usual and I would assume the number crunching fun will be there too in some form. The software prog does it all says glenn.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

18 album ballots I think we're at now.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 19 July 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

OK I'd like to rep for Voivod - Angel Rat, because everyone called it a pop-metal cop-out when it was actually the weirdest, spookiest pop-metal album of all time. Also, loadsa stuff on this thread of 70's doom and this thread of 70's doom (warning : many youtube links therein)

But I have to rep for Autopsy... people should def put them in their ballots. I'll post something in the youtube thread.

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Monday, 19 July 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't finished my trax ballot, but Ratt will be on it too.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 July 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

I love Ratt. Though don't sleep on the EP - the tracks are scuzzier and trashy in the best way.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 July 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

I'd rather listen to Hanoi Rocks or Turbonegro.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

Before I vote, I would like some uh, feedback.

What did you people do with some of the classic rock songs like The Who, Thin Lizzy, etc? Or more alternative like Nirvana?

I love those songs but I don't consider them to be metal or heavy rock in the high school parking lot sense. Did anybody vote for those types of songs?

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

Personally, I'm just picking my favourites from both lists, and not worrying about genre at all.

What did you people do with some of the classic rock songs like The Who, Thin Lizzy, etc? Or more alternative like Nirvana?

I voted for some Thin Lizzy, how are they not hard rock? At the poppier end of 70s metal (as that kind of thing was known then) I guess. What is the high school parking lot sense of metal these days?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

Dan wont have a problem.
Cheers John.
Bill - got it

Vote for your faves in the list. If you really dont think they belong then put them in the lower half? cuz it would be daft to leave stuff out as you dont think they fit, they got nominated and okayed. But just choose your faves forget what others say. But putting them in the lower half is a good alt suggestion.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

shite, i forgot to nominate celtic frost - the usurper to the tracks.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

What did you people do with some of the classic rock songs like The Who, Thin Lizzy, etc? Or more alternative like Nirvana?

I haven't done mine yet but I will be penalising a couple of tracks for not quite fitting the remit. Just bumping them down a couple of places, as although they may be better songs than what ends up above them, they're not better heavy rock songs. On the other hand, I agree with Matt #2 that Thin Lizzy are definitely heavy rock, and a good couple of the Nirvana noms are too.

emil.y, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

I hope you do an albums list too!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

and thin lizzy are definitely heavy rock.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not really sure that I have the ability to do an albums list. Even with stuff like Sabbath I tend to just listen to a couple of tracks at a time. I'll have a harder look when I've finished my tracks ballot and see if I can pull together 15 that I'd totally vouch for.

emil.y, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

Just sent both of mine in, they lean very 1970s it seems...

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

I bet you can make more than 15 easy, emil.y once you get started.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

So is Purple Haze (1967) the earliest song nominated? And if so, can it be said to be the song that invented heavy metal?

I actually didn't vote for the odd thing (eg Fushitsusha) that would have made it, had I not decided they didn't fit my personal remit. I still don't understand why 2112 and Hemispheres weren't allowed in the tracks poll though, would have voted for them...

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

My strategy: narrowed it down on a first pass to things I thought I could see myself voting for. Started down then in alphabetical order going down deciding whether I liked the individual thing more or less than the stuff I had already ranked. Then cut the list at 50. No revisions, gut instinct only. Hence my tracks ballot.

anyone else with me that cutting the albums list down was hardest?
It was good fun though. Im enjoying looking at all your ballots, but i have no idea whats gonna be in the top 20. it all looks so open atm, cant see obvious front runners.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, albums much harder than tracks. Got tracks down to 70 or so on first pass whereas albums was well over 100.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

both were kinda hard but in different ways - its a lot easier for me to figure out my favorite album from artist whatever than nail down which 1 or 2 tracks i like best - also because i totally blew it at nomming tracks, lots of the obvious choices for me weren't there.

(an aside - pfunk if you want to look at those two ulver album names on the ballots that have come in so far and let me know if either or both have gotten votes ill pick whichever one has less and strike that to make things easier - prob hit me up on email to avoid spoilerization)

Albums very easy (esp. number one); tracks harder but mainly just a matter of narrowing down the number of tracks from my faves (as a non-metal type, I opted for "short" and "fast").

Two masterpieces not on the tracks list = Motorhead: "Snaggletooth" and Nirvana: "Sliver"

27 album ballots. Nearly 2 weeks left.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

I'm making my vote based on an extremely complicated set of criteria that makes sense only to myself. Ballads, gone. Anything artsy, gone. Too classic rock, gone. Too punk, gone. Certain grunge is ok, as long as it's not too alternative. I'm trying to impress an imaginary high school parking lot in my mind.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 22 July 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

I got a fair pile booted out too, possibly not entirely unfairly - I'd've included Blackstreet or The Stone Roses myself, but it's pfunkboy's poll after all. I also somehow had a Linkin Park album discounted though, which I felt was a touch harsh.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 12:51 (fifteen years ago)

Will you be doing the full top 100 run-down, or just 50?

Neil S, Friday, 23 July 2010 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

tracks or albums?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

both!

Neil S, Friday, 23 July 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

Probably 100 for tracks if there's enough votes. Maybe 200 for albums if there's enough votes. Want to try getting the obscurer albums in the spotlight rather than just doing the canon. But only because its an alltime poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

plus it will stop people moaning "wheres the real metal" ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

If anyone wanted more than 100 top tracks I'd do it if there was enough votes.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

must. finish. tracks. soon.
must. not. lose. mind...
...too. late.

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Friday, 23 July 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

you lost it long ago, your albums ballot proves that! ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

another ballot for both in, cheers.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

Counting down 200? Good luck with that.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 July 2010 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

People moaning about "where's the _____" in these polls is one of the most fun parts. You'll deprive the rest of us that happiness if you count down the top 200.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 July 2010 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

200 it is!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

(and there will still be where'd the ___________" it's ILM, and usually it's done by non-voters. So vote!)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

Would be good if we could pass the 50 ballot mark

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

I can vote again if necessary!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 July 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

I will look out for a Fohnny Jever ballot then...

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

I think that's a job for Easy's Nappin'.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 23 July 2010 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

can't wait til Tuomas shows up to lament the lack of dance music and the dominance of guitar bands

some dude, Friday, 23 July 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

"There's no way any of this is as heavy as Alice Coltrane."

EZ Snappin, Friday, 23 July 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

I wish Tuomas and others would read the rundown of results and check stuff out.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

I do think that it might only be the regular rolling metal thread readers/lurkers that will be reading the results thread. One thing I will say is that the ballots so far are very ILM, a great wide range of subgenres being voted for. The top 200 looks like it could be quite interesting. I cant wait for a week on tuesday to see the results myself. But you guys will need to wait!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

As usual, I'm much more intrigued by the tracks results than the albums results, but anytime an all-time list of albums is calculated, I'm on board.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 July 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

Most people have said when it comes to metal, albums are way more important, but I guess in the 70s and with hair metal, there was a time songs got on radio and were big hits, so if you dig that era, tracks might be more enjoyable. Though I have no idea where songs are going to place. It's probably fair to say the more extreme stuff wont fare so well.
But the albums are of more interest. I just did a tracks one as its an alltime poll, i figured people could enjoy that. Got a lot more album ballots, but there's over a week yet.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

Here is some
Terrorizer
Kerrang
RAW
lists. Maybe some will find it helpful, or you just want to have a look or a laugh.

It is interesting how things have gone in and out of fashion.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, it's fair to say metal is a genre where the importance of albums is completely exaggerated. On behalf of people like me, thank you for even bothering to take on a tracks poll at the same time.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 July 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

It's my pleasure. We got over 20 ballots already so no reason why we wont get a great list, though it wouldnt surprise me if half a dozen bands dominated it, lol

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

Metal and jazz are the two genres from I'm most likely to play an album all the way through. Even in the metal chart heydays of the 70s and 80s I always thought of the singles as how that fit on the album. It's why I didn't really want to do a tracks list, and why I thought ten was enough.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 23 July 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

I was actually thinking of you when I decided to do it.
xp (johnny fever)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

I always play albums all the way through. Never seen the point of buying stuff just cuz of singles on it, i want a good album statement. Dont give a shit if someone says that's rockist. If the bands they guys liked made awesome albums they would shout it from the rooftops.
I like plenty of electronic/dance 12"s, but you cant beat a quality album.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

and some of my fave albums are in said field.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

as well as fave gigs.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

those kerrang/raw lists are worth looking at for a chuckle btw. Tho johnny fever and ioannis might love them!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

I'm looking forward to griping about the lack of hip hop.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 24 July 2010 01:57 (fifteen years ago)

Hey, I nominated "She Watch Channel Zero" (but didn't vote for it in the end).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 July 2010 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

I might have voted for the Follow For Now version.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 24 July 2010 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

You, me and maybe five other people remember Follow For Now.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 July 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

I tried to convince some friends to roadtrip to NYC to see them open for Son of Bazerk. And then again to Atlanta for a headlining show with 24-7 Spyz opening. Sadly, neither trip was made.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 24 July 2010 02:36 (fifteen years ago)

Nate, your list had 52 in it, had to cut off the bottom 2. Thanks for voting though!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

tracks ballots lagging behind for now.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:21 (fifteen years ago)

Ok I voted. I hope I never have to do this again.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:29 (fifteen years ago)

find it hard cutting it down to 50? :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:30 (fifteen years ago)

Well yeah. Also, it's so much arbitrary, meaningless work that will be crushed into further meaninglessness by the votes of people who think that The Who and Joan Jett are metal.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:33 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but it's just a bit of fun. It's not meant to be definitive. There is no such thing as a list of alltime best records, there never can be, but it's fun making a list and seeing what people really really rate highly.
But think of it this way, some ilxors who may not have heard a lot of really good stuff might now discover it. Not even just by the results, but by reading peoples ballots.

On one of the threads some posters are complaining about all ilm polls being like a boring mojo canonical list, this poll will certainly NOT be that.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

If some ilxors discover the joys of Yob or Manilla Road or The Lord Weird Slough Feg, then our work is worth it!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:46 (fifteen years ago)

another couple of votes, cheers!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

Just had a look at the Kerrang! top 100 metal albums of all time list, done in 1989. All fairly canon in the top 10, except for Montrose by MOntrose at #4, a band I know nothing about. Anyone?

Neil S, Saturday, 24 July 2010 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

That Montrose album is quite good. Young Sammy Hagar on vocals, Ronnie Montrose leading the band with some serious guitar licks. "Bad Motor Scooter", "Space Station #5" and several other great tracks.

I'll drop a vid in the accompanying video thread.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 24 July 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks, sounds worth hearing. I would venture to speculate that Van Halen are one of the bands that have suffered critically since that poll was done.

Neil S, Saturday, 24 July 2010 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

I'd agree, which is a shame. Only one duff album in their first DLR incarnation. Loved 'em as a kid, might love 'em more now.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 24 July 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

I think Van Hale, while not as critically popular as they were, are on the way back up. I think the rise of Classic Rock Magazine has helped with a LOT of those bands, the type of bands Mojo are too sniffy about and wont cover.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

Van Halen's current critical slip probably has a lot to do with the fact they haven't released a new album since 1998, and haven't released a good album since 1988. Now that they're back in the studio with DLR, I'm less worried about how his voice will hold up than I am about Eddie's songwriting abilities. He's taken a LONG TIME off.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 July 2010 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

Not a band I've ever cared for, but I do enjoy spinning their 1st album occasionally, you cant fuck with that album.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

That's a great record, yes. I will check out some more of their stuff on the back of this discussion.

Neil S, Saturday, 24 July 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

You still have saint vitus and Trouble albums to check out!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

and plenty of other good stuff when the results come in, no doubt!

Neil S, Saturday, 24 July 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

another albums vote in. ILM doing us proud!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

woo another vote, thanks!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

I bet a huge percentage of votes come in towards the deadline. I know I'm not voting until I thoroughly analyze the heavyosity of the nominated tracks.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

i would expect a few on deadline day. Possibly all the people who did album ballots might decide what the hell and do a tracks ballot.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

40 album ballots so far.
24 tracks ballots.

Thanks to all who have voted, i'm really pleased so many have taken the time. If we get to 50 then that would be amazing.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

I submitted my Tracks ballot. (I submitted my album ballot with the Tracks title earlier, don't be a dummy like me).

It took a while to narrow it down, and it's mostly older well known stuff. If you Carcass and Death fans want to be represented, don't forget to vote.

making posts (Zachary Taylor), Sunday, 25 July 2010 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

got it, thanks!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 25 July 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

Just looking at the Terrorizer lists http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/terroris.htm and the magazine was really a different beast when it started. Swans,Whitehouse,Blood Axis in the top 10 of the 96 EOY poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 25 July 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

If any of those bands made this poll, people would be crying false metal!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 25 July 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

(note that I have never actually heard Blood Axis)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 25 July 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

Thank you for voting in the ILX Metal/Heavy Rock poll, this is an auto
reply letting you know it has been received.

Thanks
pfunkboy & JJ

grrrrrr...nevah agin'.

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Sunday, 25 July 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

People who cry false [anything] are annoying, but metal dudes are some of the worst.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 July 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

And of course Swans are in the album shortlist.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Sunday, 25 July 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

thanks Ioannis, did you have trouble getting your shortlist down to 50?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 25 July 2010 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

what is this measly fifty you speak of? try "one hundred! two hundred!"

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Sunday, 25 July 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

like me and the albums ballot then.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 25 July 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe I'll do a top 300 albums, just to thank everyone for all their hard work in voting. ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 25 July 2010 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

I might even let Ioannis post his 250 strong shortlist after the results are in :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 25 July 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

Are you guys more interested in the album results or tracks? For me, the albums seem almost predictable. I can't wait to see the track results.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 26 July 2010 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

Both, But i will not lie that I'm more interested in albums. But I think the results wont be predictable as its ILM we're talking about, but with a week to go a lot can change. I think people did album ballots first so I expect a flood of singles ballots. I kinda feel that will be more predictable but who knows!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 03:16 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe I'll do a top 300 albums, just to thank everyone for all their hard work in voting. ;)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, July 25, 2010 1:48 PM (6 hours ago)

Sounds excellent to me!!

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Monday, 26 July 2010 03:45 (fifteen years ago)

I think I will then! Looks like we can put the roll out a week earlier than planned, so its just gonna be done in the same time period as planned. Lots of great albums will fall in that range and it will mean some coverage for highly rated culy albums that 5 or 6 people have rated really highly (extreme metal and hair metal fans rejoice)
This is not a response to that Rolling Stone 500 I read tonight, oh no...
ILM Polls pissover that.

Tracks is staying at 100 though. Im hoping to roll that out next tuesday if things go to plan , but that's all outwith my hands. The real hard work is done by others.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

and yes, I know I'm insane :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 03:53 (fifteen years ago)

indubitably. \m/ ^_^ \m/

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Monday, 26 July 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)

there is no point in doing more than a top 100 IMO, and that's stretching it

jaymc won $5800 on day 1! (HI DERE), Monday, 26 July 2010 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

If you do more than 100, do the others after. Keep the surprises - people wondering what's next helps drive the conversation.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 26 July 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

There's over 1000 albums nominated. Lots of huge albums will fall between 200-300. Others will still miss out, there's going to be lots of surprises I think. So im doing a 300!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

I think over 700 albums have had a vote

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

Why not do a top 700? Just kidding - "Keep the surprises - people wondering what's next helps drive the conversation" is right. I'd probably go with 50 or whatever number means a few big 'uns miss out. If you want to do more, do them fast I say. Like 300-200 in one day.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 July 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

I'd do a top 50 + "honorable mentions"

jaymc won $5800 on day 1! (HI DERE), Monday, 26 July 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

yeah ok i'll do the 300-200 as quickly as possible then. Its no great problem for me. I just want to see spotlight on these albums.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah obviously with a top 300 we'll have to go faster than 10 albums a day or whatever, but it would be nice to slow down to that when we get closer to the end - say at the album #50 or 100 mark.

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

I still say do them, but after the top 100. Metal nerds will still discuss but we keep the mystery longer.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 26 July 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

This countdown does not need to be any long than the top 100, seriously. There's always talk about the other albums from 101 and on after it's over, but if you're paying attention to your audience here, nobody wants to sit through a top 300 countdown. Especially if you zip through it.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 July 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the last thing I need to know is that a "huge album" (whatever that means) reach the dizzy heights of #258.

Jeff W, Monday, 26 July 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

How about this? Count down the top 100 in each category, THEN make another thread for counting down 200-101 or 300-101 for people who might want to see where other things placed. People would arguably be more interested in those AFTER seeing what cleared the top 100. Since this is an all-time list, I think we already have no idea what would make the top 100 anyway, and if you count down from 300 to begin with, a lot of the guessing would get swept away.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 July 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

you're not convincing me to change my idea so far

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

I'm with the 100 only guys, half the fun is the disbelief someone has when they realise their personal favourite won't make the cut. Just a shame that Lex won't be voting in this.

State Attorney Foxhart Cubycheck (Billy Dods), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

"All fairly canon in the top 10, except for Montrose by MOntrose at #4, a band I know nothing about. Anyone?"

Late to answer this, but this album fucking slays.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

so basically you're saying "ignore the first week of results" by going ahead with this top 300 idea

jaymc won $5800 on day 1! (HI DERE), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

Take a week, count down 100-1 like HOW WE DO HERE ON ILM. People will be excited. Yay! It stirs up conversation. People participate. Your thread is a par-tay!!! When the thread's over, all the people drunk on metal and high on heavy rock come to you and say "Kerr, man...how about you tell me the rest of the top 300 was. NOW I'm really interested, man!"

If you start at 300, it's like having a kegger but insisting that people play a game of Scrabble first.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 July 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

And if you do 300, please put the first 200 in a different thread so I can skip it until afterwords.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 26 July 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

you guys are no fun.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

Compromise, I'll do a 200. Final offer.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

but doing a thread after the 200 with 300-201 is an idea i like too, so thanks for suggesting it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, most of us will show up when you get to #100. Final offer.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

I'm with Johnny. Please do the top 100, and any others after. Please.

xpost

Or a Top 10 and never share the other votes! That would be ballsy.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

Counting down from 100 is kind of a comfortable behavior around here. If you upset it in anyway, it throws people into an uncomfortable position. No one here is saying we're not interested in finding out what's outside the top 100, but we're fine with waiting until afterwards (and would actually prefer it that way). Is this poll for you or for ILM?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

oh snap, shit is getting heateed

jaymc won $5800 on day 1! (HI DERE), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

When I'm looking at big honking lists, I look at the top twenty or so as recommendations to buy and only look at anything below that with the hope that it will somehow confirm my tastes.

kkvgz, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

I now think you should post #275 through #251 and then append the others to random posts you make on the rolling last.fm thread

jaymc won $5800 on day 1! (HI DERE), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

Look, the 100 is probably going to be mostly canonical picks that you can predict. I want some spotlight on the 101-200. If you don't wish to click on the thread til the top 100 countdown starts then that's your prerogative.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

"Hold Steady at #63! So I'm not alone!"

kkvgz, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

I'm with the people who say top 100 first. Then, and only then, release the rest of the results, either in immediate full form or countdown, I don't really mind. Otherwise you will completely lose any tension involved in the thread - if we already know that 'great album x' has only reached #250, then there will be no anticipation or disappointment, and thus no discussion.

Saying that you can join the thread later is nonsense - how will we be able to scroll down to an unknown point in the thread without spoiling the surprise?

emil.y, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

more than 100 is just https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZTdfyaRHK4 dude!

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

You could always do a count-up, then you can do however many you like or for as long as your stamina can take it.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry Herman, have to agree with the 100 crew, lower items later (and possibly in a different thread) is the way to go IMO.

Neil S, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, seriously: is the idea that you get to highlight some of the lower-down albums, that are still worthy of a bit of attention? I can see how that would work, if there are a lot of voters, and I see we have 40-odd, so that should work. I think the feeling is that the countdown shouldn't be interminable, but if all lower down albums are at least getting a few voters (and hence a few fans), then it should definitely still feel worthwhile. I reckon those lower albums should be done quick-ish, though, if this is the plan.

Neil S, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that is pretty much the idea. I'm just no good at explaining things. You more or less nailed it.
You know how johnny ran an alternative poll? This is kinda it + the *"canon" poll.
I think most people know what the RAWK ** Canon is, but even though an ILM *** "Canon" will be slightly different, I want to bring to the attention lesser known but highly rated "Cult albums". If 5,6,7 people vote highly for albums, I feel the least they deserve is to see the albums get a wee bit in the spotlight. If i posted them after the top 100 **** "Canon", we all know most of you will ignore it. I promise I'll zip through the 200-101 so that none of you are being kept waiting for results.
But please remember, but with a lot of work at this end by several people,I'm on top of the whole thing, the turnaround will (fingers crossed) be right away practically rather than the original week I thought it would take. So there will be no extra waiting.

Infact, the tracks rollout will finish a week on friday night, I shall probably do 200-101 over that weekend, with 100-1 mon-friday.
So if you really wish to avoid 200-101 then you can avoid the thread that weekend (but why would you do that? I want to highlight said rated cult albums).

Neil, feel free to translate that for me :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

Neil S, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

And I can understand wanting to stop the poll being predictable, if that's a goal...

Neil S, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

yep, you sure you don't want to translate for me?!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 July 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

If that's the aim, how about using day 1 for honorable mentions only, rather than counting down categorically? Then you can give Dajjal's Spawn their day in the sun for being #186, without giving away that Physical Graffiti stalled at #187.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

If 5,6,7 people vote highly for albums, I feel the least they deserve is to see the albums get a wee bit in the spotlight.

Wait, is it looking like 7 high votes isn't enough to get into the top 100? Because 7 votes near the top has often been enough to get into more general polls. This wouldn't change my opinion, mind you, as I definitely want to see all the results, but I'm interested to know how well the poll is doing.

If i posted them after the top 100 **** "Canon", we all know most of you will ignore it.

I don't know this. In fact, I think it's completely wrong judging from past poll thread behaviour. We managed to get even more people talking about Paavoharju in the post 2005-9 results discussion, even though they only came in at about #181. Also, after his poll LJ did a special awards section for albums that got a number one vote and no others, which highlighted more obscure albums that at least someone loves. Plus, there's always a good bit of discussion in the 'post your ballots' threads. Of course, the people who voted for the albums tend to have to be the ones to spark the discussion, but if as you say you have albums with 5 high votes then there should be enough passion about to ensure that they do.

if you really wish to avoid 200-101 then you can avoid the thread that weekend

Again, how would this work? I'm not against talking about the albums that come lower, I'm against ruining the flow of the thread by removing suspense, and thus ensuring that we don't get as much discussion. Nobody will be able to just join in at number 100 as if the previous hundred haven't been posted.

emil.y, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

By the way, I'm totally for revealing album #666 first. I think that would be most fitting.

emil.y, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

only if it's a six-way tie

"There's no way a Filipino can hold a championship trophy." (HI DERE), Monday, 26 July 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

Also, you tend to give a lot of stats at the end, which I love, and again, it makes people chat about stuff more after the main results have been finished. So you could give the full list, a list weighted by average rating, etc etc.

xpost

emil.y, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

there will be some sort of stats stuff posted at the end as usual, if Glenn isnt too busy as I haven't got a clue what half of it means, and I have it in front of me!

Without wanting to give stuff away, there's 262 albums ATM with over 4votes/100 points. And I expect more votes by monday.

I promise you, once the results countdown starts you will enjoy it. There will be no lack of suspense.

I guess I can post #666 first even if it is a bit cheesy.

Emil.y , Stats we will definitely have are voter enthusiasm, Voters by Vote Diversity , which we always have on the metal EOY poll.
But there will be at least one GREAT thing that we are going to keep to ourselves until all results are rolled out, but I know you all (ok, mostly) will love it.

Need to ask Glenn what else we can do. If there's any suggestions I can ask Glenn if the prog will do it.
So fire away.

If 5,6,7 people vote highly for albums, I feel the least they deserve is to see the albums get a wee bit in the spotlight.

I'm used to only about 10-15% of my ballot making the final results, so I'm not exactly butthurt about it when things I vote for don't show up. This kind of thing smacks of a "WE'RE ALL WINNERS HERE" mentality.

However I'm not telling you what it is, AS I DONT WANT TO SPIL THE SUSPENSE! mwahahahaha.

I thought of this last night, but forgot to ask at the time: does this new method of listing the 200 mean that 200 goes up the same time as 100, 199 goes up the same time as 99, and so on? Because that would be NOT good.

I could tell you now what it is, but i cba arguing over it. We're doing it, jj & i settled on it, glenn thinks its great. So does viceroy and Neil whom i asked for advice.

I'll tell you it now as long as you realise that its the way we're doing it.

Want me to email it to you? or pop on gmail chat and i'll tell you (incase other's dont want to know, I know part of the fun is wondering what the format is)
But I'll tell anyone who emails me.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 July 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

I'm fine w/ waiting.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

It's a good system. John & I agreed on it last night. We're doing a 250 btw, but the system guarantees suspense. There's albums outside the 250 with 5 votes. Plus I expect a deluge of votes in the last 2 days. If anyone is worried about suspense killing, don't be. But I'll explain it offboard no problem. One of the "objectors" gave us the basis of the idea. You can work it out quite easily as it's so simple. And the 5 people who know what it is think its a good idea. This poll isn't just about the best known albums, it's for everyone, including extreme metal fans. This way will keep most happy. The unexpected albums get the spotlight during rundown while any shock low placings ,the format means you wont know what is missed out, so suspense will be mantained in the top 100.
And you should be able to work out what we're doing from that!
TRUST US!

Tracks is 100 though. I think we're all agreed on that.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 July 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

when we get down to 100, it will roll out in normal order.

61 Album ballots and 46 Tracks ballots. To get in the top 250 an albums pretty much needs 5 votes min. There's some between 201-250 with 8 or 9 votes.

I'm well pleased with the amount of voting.

Question the meaning of life and probably travel the world on foot in utter despair.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 30 July 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

Vol IV is my least favorite of the first four and didn't make my ballot. Other Sabbath did.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 30 July 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

and without johhny's help too

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 30 July 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

On both album and track lists, no less!

EZ Snappin, Friday, 30 July 2010 17:04 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone got any requests for stats at the end? If it can be done we will do it for you.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 30 July 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

I belatedly discovered That Metal Show on VH1 Classic this summer (probably cuz it's buried on channel 470-something), and enjoy Eddie Trunk's geeky love and knowledge of everything heavy rock (http://www.eddietrunk.com/index.cfm?pid=402097). I wonder if he'd submit a ballot if someone snaked this thread to his attention.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

dunno the program, but he posts on ilx?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 31 July 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

Regret: I wish to hell that I'd nommed Faith No More "The Real Thing" the title track. That's one of my favorite songs in the universe and I have no idea how I'd forgotten it.

kkvgz, Saturday, 31 July 2010 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

Oh shit, only two days left to do my tracks. Can we expect the results pretty sharpish?

rhythm fixated member (chap), Saturday, 31 July 2010 12:38 (fifteen years ago)

xpost - great track, but I'm certainly glad Patton later stopped putting that vice on, whatever it's supposed to be.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Saturday, 31 July 2010 12:40 (fifteen years ago)

VOICE on.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Saturday, 31 July 2010 12:40 (fifteen years ago)

yeah tracks results will roll out (hopefully) pretty much when voting ends , give or take some checking. Will finish on the friday. the big tracks roll out will then start. Then at the end of tracks results we will go stats crazy.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 31 July 2010 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

I'll be doing some DIY at that point for the ultimate male experience.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 31 July 2010 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

dirty bastard

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 31 July 2010 13:02 (fifteen years ago)

xp - I did sent Trunk an email about this thread and I'd like to draw him to ilx but I'm probably too late for this thread.

Wish I waited to submit my ballot, cuz when I went over the list again I wished I'd included some Scorpions and Riot.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 31 July 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know if anyone has objections to a non-ilxor voting or not. I'm not bothered either way (even if i do not like his taste in music much as its more "mainstream" 70s heavy rock/80s hair metal) even a lot of the hair metal voters on ilx have still voted for "troo" metal as well. But if dude comes here and posts on the thread and posts on the results thread then I say go for it, welcome! But if he's not gonna post... hmm. I'll go with what you lot want.
I like the variations of styles in a lot of ilxors lists. It's what will make it stand out from magazines/other boards lists.
There's nothing more boring than an all black metal list or all heavy rock lists or Doom or Death Metal what have you.
ILM rules at varied lists, I have to say that (stats stuff at the end will show you how).

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 31 July 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

Wish I waited to submit my ballot, cuz when I went over the list again I wished I'd included some Scorpions and Riot.

I think you need to redo it - gotta have some of both.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 31 July 2010 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

already tabulated the votes.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 31 July 2010 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

Man, these ballots keep flooding in, cheers everyone!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 31 July 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

68 album ballots
50 tracks ballots

Some surprises ahead?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Too late to get a ballot in tomorrow? I completely forgot about this, my mind's been busy with other stuff.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Sunday, 1 August 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

It ends Monday night 11.59pm. Practically 2 days left. You can do it!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 01:07 (fifteen years ago)

Some rolling metal regulars who usually vote in the metal polls haven't done so yet.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

I'd suggest people start to work on their ballots sunday rather than leaving it to Monday and not having enough time to do it.
If you have trouble cutting your shortlist down, a good suggestion is to leave out non-metal stuff.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 04:38 (fifteen years ago)

Question for everyone - On the tracks results roll-out, would you like a youtube with each track (if available),so that you can listen to each track, or would you prefer a separate thread for youtubes, so that the results page doesn't load too slow etc?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

I want a youtube of each track if possible.

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Sunday, 1 August 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

but I have fast internet...

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Sunday, 1 August 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

Probably with the youtubes - it does wreck my computer, but it's manageable

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 1 August 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

It can be done on a separate thread if need be.

fastnbulbous did you get an email back from that guy? He can vote if he wants to.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

links to youtube with each track would be my choice

Mosquepanik at Ground Zero (abanana), Sunday, 1 August 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

hey johnny fever, you weren't kidding about ballots flooding in the last couple of days, poor jj is snowed under
*cracks whip*

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

the posting links doesn't work as they auto embed. but jj is in charge of tracks rundown , so it's his call.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, if it's just 100 tracks, youtube embeds shouldn't clog even the slowest computer. It's threads like the youtube-persuasion thread counterpart of this poll which is the cpu killer (I can't even go to it anymore, and my computer's fairly powerful).

You can link to youtubes, though. Just remove the http:// part.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 1 August 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

john and special guest should be posting most of the results so I think he will be posting youtubes in the result thread (use bookmarks to avoid thread loading slowly).

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

Just voted. Completely subjective; I didn't even pick everything I nominated, and I omitted quite a few albums that I love because they didn't fit the brief for me. But sure I'm not the only one (I hope).

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Sunday, 1 August 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

got it, cheers!

Into the last 24 hours of voting now.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 August 2010 23:52 (fifteen years ago)

everyone finalising their ballots?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)

Hoping everybody makes it in before the deadline!!
Getting close to last call...

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Monday, 2 August 2010 04:02 (fifteen years ago)

can a mod change title to voting ends tonight 11.59pm UK Time please?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

80 album ballots
51 tracks ballots

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 12:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yes! I'm so psyched.

kkvgz, Monday, 2 August 2010 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

tracks results will rollout as soon as possible after voting ends. Will finish friday .

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely have Trunk vote. Strangers in the Night will be his #1 alb, guaranteed.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Monday, 2 August 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

nothing so far.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't heard from Trunk. It was a longshot, he's a busy guy. Wouldn't it be funny if the poll got a mention on the show? But the current season is over, not sure when they tape for next season.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 2 August 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

Oh well, you could try get Chuck,Phil (who both normally vote), jeff, scott, george all to submit ballots.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't they all voted?

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 2 August 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

Not as yet.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

emil.y has forgot to vote as usual, as has LJ. heh

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

deadbeats all.

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Monday, 2 August 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

I extended the deadline a couple of extra days to avoid it too, but it doesn't seem to matter, ppl then just delay doing it another couple of days.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't forgotten... had a terrible hangover today so might just send in the 37 or so tracks I've put in order rather than attempt any more sorting/re-listening.

emil.y, Monday, 2 August 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

ya see what i'm sayin'? ^_^

deep purple yoda (Ioannis), Monday, 2 August 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

Not denying deadbeat status, nope.

emil.y, Monday, 2 August 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

haha, got it, thank you! I assume hangover = no album ballot?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's gonna have to be missed, yeah. Will still hang around the results thread, though.

Also, hangover has compelled me to wrap myself up with a blanket, and thus I look a bit like a be-hooded member of Sunn 0))). ROCK ON.

emil.y, Monday, 2 August 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

Voting has now closed.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

Will post a couple of results tonight, just need the results to be double checked.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

OK, glenns checking it over, I'll start soon, john will be doing a lot of the posting but we hope to have a special guest posting a few of them!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

Was out and missed the deadline, sorry.:(

Sundar, Monday, 2 August 2010 23:58 (fifteen years ago)
