"MC Hammer" blew my mind last night.

i'm about to listen to this album, i predict that i will like it a lot
― ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 03:33 (fifteen years ago)
i feel like the relative critical love of his last album was one wave too early, and this album is getting rightful praise
the biggest asset in this album's favor is it's run time -- 'deeper than rap' was waaayyy too long
― ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 03:34 (fifteen years ago)
also had too many tracks about chicks
'teflon don' will get 10x better if you replace "super high" with the remix

should i cut-and-paste my 50-post Rick Ross tirade from twitter?
― some dude, Friday, 23 July 2010 03:36 (fifteen years ago)
pretty good album, Albert Anastacia EP is better to me though ("Knife Fight"! "Gotti Family!" "White Sand".. that shit is crazy)... don't really like "Maybach Music 3," the first one is still the best one, "I'm Not A Star", "Tears of Joy" and "Aston Martin Music" are the best tracks on this one (besides "BMF"), "Audio Meth" with Raekwon and "Mafia Music 2" should've been on the album...
― The Brainwasher, Friday, 23 July 2010 03:38 (fifteen years ago)
yes you should @somedude
Only the bits that will inspire Terius-thread-worthy ire, some dude.

"Audio Meth" with Raekwon and "Mafia Music 2" should've been on the album...
yes
i feel like him releasing a "mafia music" that's better than any song on the actual album should be a ross tradition
― ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 03:39 (fifteen years ago)
Even tho I basically like him now, it still mystifies me that he has become one of the biggest rap stars.

Dude's got charisma -- he's a dirtier, funnier Heavy D.

he really blacked out on the third verse of "I'm Not A Star," though... for real.
― The Brainwasher, Friday, 23 July 2010 03:41 (fifteen years ago)
Best Jay-Z verse in a long time.
The song with Raphael Saadiq is terrible, mostly for Saadiq's contributions.

ha, i think the intro of my 'trilla' review is apropos here (excuse the sloppy prose)
Rick Ross, though you may not be aware of it, is one of the most successful rappers in music right now. That said, he’s an odd case. Unlike with Jay-Z, Kanye West or T.I., you won’t see any of Ross’ albums appearing on a year-end list on this website, in Rolling Stone or probably even XXL. And unlike 50 Cent, another hugely popular but critically reviled rapper, Ross has neither a unanimously acclaimed album nor single in his past. Yet, Trilla, his second album, sold 198,000 copies in its first week out, despite the fact that the album’s big lead single peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at #87, and that his face showed up on as many magazine covers as mine did.
Not only does all this make Ross a confounding presence, but also a pretty important one. If middle-schoolers aren’t buying Ross’ albums with their birthday money—and all indications are that they aren’t—than who exactly is vaulting this dude over chart mainstays like Snoop Dogg and the Now collection? The answer has to be rap fans, meaning Rick Ross—the rapper who will forever remain infamous for rhyming “Atlantic” with “Atlantic”—is galvanizing rap’s core fan base like only its most visible pop stars can. Common and UGK, two rap acts whose last albums also went #1 despite minimal pop crossover, share peer boosterism with Ross, but they’ve been around. Their number ones felt owed to them. Ross on the other hand, hasn’t influenced a whole generation of successful rappers (and even though I like Trilla, and him in general, I hope he never does).
― ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 03:43 (fifteen years ago)
Jay's "Light Up" verse >>>>> his "free mason" verse IMO.

maybe it was a "bonus track"
i think it was cool that ross developed that super luxurious, expensive sounding... sound on 'deeper than rap' but lex luger's crunk revivalism really agrees with him
― ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 03:45 (fifteen years ago)
yeah Ross' success still kind of confuses me a bit, "BMF" being the biggest street record out right now is kind of baffling tgiven the whole c.o. thing... but I guess if the music's good..

Both are great, but his more agile flow is back on "Free Mason," which I miss from Jay. But "Light Up" probably has more memorable lines.
― altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 03:45 (fifteen years ago)
I have a feeling Lex Luger is going keep recycling the same beat, but I kind of like everything I've heard by him so far... he did this new Fab song that's kind of dope

deeper than rap is way better than the other two! and was way more of an EVENT too, when that first joint dropped where hes all 'whistling at wendy williams' or whatever thats when everyone was all "whoa...dude can rap." This record doesnt feel like much of an EVENT at all in comparison

― blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)
I like Deeper Than Rap better than Teflon Don. I feel like the new one is too ambitious. Peter Principle in action, kinda; on DTR he got as good as he's ever gonna be and had exactly the kind of lush yacht-rap beats he needs. Only "Super High" really maintains that level of lushness.

if anything, 'deeper than rap' felt like an event record mostly because of his beef with 50
i think the hype surrounding 'teflon don' was borne solely out of the realization that the dude could actually rap

also missing in discussion is the return of the legit street banger as a semi-crossover hit. when was the last time street track that was rap's song of the summer

― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)
yeah that is true -- the whole talking about point about ross's extravagant beats is really more pertinent to the last album
teflon don is better in part because there are joints like "mc hammer" an "bmf" and the opener to balance everything out
― righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)
Beamer, Benz or Bently?
― I think I'm Princess Peach... King Koopa (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)
i wouldn't necessarily call "BMF" at street hit in the sense that it's a rick ross song... there was always some level of built in advantages -- it's certainly not on the same wavelength in that regard as "o let's do it" or "wasted" or any dance snap thing
really i think it served more of a purpose of reminding ross's people that no one really wants to hear him doing shit like "super high" or "magnificent" -- people still want "hustlin" type joints from him (exception being the one w/ nelly that was a hit)
― righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah Ross is weird, came into the game with a dark anthemic banger, even his T-Pain joint wasn't very R&B, but then suddenly he decides every song needs some soft hands soul singer on the hook.
― The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)
Not to take anything away from him, because he's put out some very good albums, but how much of Rick Ross' appeal is that he's filling the void left behind by Biggie? It's a comparison Ross seems to court more aggressively than ever on Teflon Don, which is peppered with Biggie references.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

― righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)
It's not just a physical comparison; though. His halting, booming flow seems to get more Biggie-esque with each album, and he (and his guests) make several explicit references to Biggie on Teflon Don. It seems to be a comparison that he actively courts.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)
well of course HE does, but that doesn't make it right

The Gentlest Bodyguard's specialty (besides appearing to be gentle while not minding if he has to rip people's tracheae out, I bet) is breakfast, and when we're back at the house, he goes to the stove. Into a large frying pan he cracks twenty-four eggs and waits for them to cook, then meticulously flips each one without breaking a yolk. In a pot the grits bubble. Yoo-hoo is an American chocolate beverage. Technically, it is a dairy drink, but it contains very little actual milk. The stated ingredients on the label include water, high-fructose corn syrup, dairy whey, sugar, corn syrup solids, cocoa, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, sodium caseinate (from milk), non-fat dry milk, salt, tricalcium phosphate, dipotassium phosphate, xanthan gum, guar gum, natural and artificial flavors, soy lecithin, mono- and diglycerides, vitamin A palmiate, niacinamide (vitamin B3), vitamin D3, and riboflavoin (vitamin B2).

i know nothing about rick ross, but when i heard two seizures in a day, i thought maybe he's got epilepsy? sometimes it shows itself later in a person's life, iirc.
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 15 October 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)
Seizures can happen as a result of tumors, impaired oxygen to the brain, hanging out with Wayne -- lotsa things.
― lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 15 October 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)
being fat itself doesnt 'cause' anything but like seizures it can be a symptom of unhealthy living, im sure theres some study that links exercise to a lack of health probblems for example
― The boyboy young jess (D-40), Saturday, 15 October 2011 05:22 (fourteen years ago)
well i guess thats kind of untrue, being fat can cause things too, but thats not a helpful way to look at it

it would be one of my favorite rick ross songs if you edited it down to just the rick ross parts. as is, fuck it.
― Citizen Ship (some dude), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 09:03 (thirteen years ago)
Ha, I easily prefer the epic extended version with Drake feeling like all four members of Color Me Badd. Also, why would you want to cut Chrisette?
― weak willie (longneck), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 09:38 (thirteen years ago)
even the drake parts are good on aston martin music. that's how good it is.
― crüt, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 09:42 (thirteen years ago)
"too doo what I had too doo" and "as...ton...mar...tin...myoo...zeek" are shitty hooks imo
― Citizen Ship (some dude), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 10:14 (thirteen years ago)
"Aston Martin Music" makes me kinda get, so briefly, what other people see in Drake. Every note he sings comes as a surprise, I suspect to himself more than anyone else.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 10:44 (thirteen years ago)
yeah he def sounds like he's making it up as he goes along

the whole thing is excellent but MC Hammer -> BMF -> Aston Martin Music is my favorite part

― Evan R, Saturday, 5 September 2015 20:09 (ten years ago)
What's the consensus on dude's post-peak music, Mastermind / Black Market? I dig the beats on Black Market a lot, no "B.M.F."-like material but I honestly don't care about that sound. Also it's the only reason I know Scott Storch and JR Rotem still exist, I forgot that Rotem in particular is probably the hackiest producer ever but the Mariah Carey remake is good
― nova, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 06:49 (nine years ago)
also is dude Nas's favorite new-school rapper or something (relatively-speaking,) he seems to collaborate with him a decent amount
― nova, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 06:55 (nine years ago)
He's the only current rapper I listen to. I think Mastermind is great, don't love Black Dollar/Black Market as much but they're solid albums.
― the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Wednesday, 20 January 2016 11:16 (nine years ago)
Mastermind had a couple tracks that are among my favorite songs of the last few years.
War Ready https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax9YLJ8Wt5Q
Blk & Wht https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI86g6eQOfs
― Spottie, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 18:41 (nine years ago)
I like "War Ready" but find the end of it kinda unnerving. As far as Black Dollar/Market, not sure why "Money Dance" is >7 minutes but it's cool cuz that's a great vibe-out beat
Still don't care about dude's rapping with a couple exceptions I can think of ("Foreclosures,") but it doesn't get in the way for me, idk how much of it is just thinking dude doesn't have the greatest voice for rap -- I definitely prefer Nas's verse on "One of Us" for instance but it's not like they're flowing all that different.
I didn't even realize him & Jeezy dropped albums at the end of last year for a bit
― nova, Friday, 22 January 2016 05:42 (nine years ago)
hard to listen to any of his later stuff imo

― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 14:12 (eight years ago)
I can't imagine reaching for any Rick Ross album other than Teflon Don or Rich Forever, but Mastermind was interesting because, along with all of Ross's Harry Fraud and Nas collabs, it revealed what a traditionalist the guy is. Made it really easy to imagine a scenario where he spends the rest of his career just playing to the "real rap" crowd, releasing solid but unexciting LPs that never change much kinda like Wu-Tang and Boot Camp and all those old New York types do.
Kinda a funny turn for a guy who began his career so reviled by traditionalists.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 18:21 (eight years ago)

None of the lyrics sites acknowledge the supposed YYYs reference and the only sources that talk about it are an Alex Macpherson article and ILX threads. Either this got massively memory-holed, or it is some Kitty Pryde "Jay-Z said anime!" mishear that we've all humiliated ourselves with
