It's 'The SLAPP' dude... Clearly hoping that they'll get gigs based on their singer's vague resemblance to Steve Harley. Also lol it's an autographed picture!
The glam bandwagon jumpers are hilarious, in each group there are obviously some members who are more committed to the idea than the others.
Would book Pork on the basis of their tagline.

Were the members of bar bands a lot older back then? Or do I just not pay attention to bar band members today?

Some of it is the optical illusion of see these haircuts for the last 30 years on the cohort as they age. The Night Crew looks like it might have a father and son, though!

The New Creation were hardly a bar band. They were more of a Shaggs-esque Christian garage outfit that released one record in 1970, recorded, I believe in a day. http://www.companionrecords.com/pages/newcreation.html#

And their song "Dig (The Evolution of Man)" is one of my favorite jams, despite its general dismissal of tempo.

Samson's bass player (far right corner, the guy kate masonic fancies) was guitar teacher at my local music store (and a classical cellist)

Muggsy were a hard-rocking Detroit area cover band w/two guitars. members went on to play w/Cub Koda and record in the 80s as Weapons

Off Broadway was great -- it seemed like you'd hear "Stay In Time" several times an hour on WLS in 1979. And it still wasn't played often enough.

sexual intercourse began in 1963 (m coleman), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

i was listening to the first two off broadway albums the other day and i kinda liked them despite the fact that they aren't very good. they were no cheap trick. to put it mildy. but a lot of those kinds of bands were better live.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

"mildly"

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

hahaha you got that right. the vocals on those off broadway albums are really mannered, can imagine riff/cliff being pretty smarmy live. I think d'Thumbs must've been "heavier" than Off Broadway. my friend was in a classic 70s bar band after that called Theatre - they had a palm tree logo and lead singer who spieled between songs like a Top 40 DJ. eventually went power-pop w/a different singer.

"we'll be back in fifteen minutes. don't forget to tip the bartenders & waitresses - they work hard!"

Mr. Thompson - jaded Physics teacher who hates kids and wishes that he'd kept playing keyboards in that band instead.

This is the hardest I have ever laughed on ILM.

Some random thoughts:

*Boy, MTV really DID ruin it for all the 'not at all attractive' dudes in bands, huh?

*A lot of these delusional creeps have wives. Imagine having to be "supportive" of Lenny and his friends rehearsing for the next Kartoon gig at Scabby's on Wednesday night.

*Pretty much every woman pictured in this thread gave me a chubbie.

in high school a friend of my brother's had a 'zine called "vartufa" - and one day by pure coincidence he came across a 7" single recorded by the above band (TUFA) and proceeded to dedicate subsequene issues of the 'zine to an exhaustively detailed fictional "history" of the band (which he later turned into a feature length film).

and guess what, today most of it is on ye internets
