"Breaking the Split-Screen Barrier" is maybe the coolest sounding song Kim Deal's ever written.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:50 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that's my vote. totally 10/10! closest 90s indie came to King Tubby. (Note: this is probably not true.)

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:51 (fifteen years ago)

voted I Am Decided
mom's drunk has a special place in my heart tho

a peach tree (156), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:52 (fifteen years ago)

wasn't I Am Decided originally a GBV song?

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

"I Am Decided," whoever wrote it.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

love this album

mizzell, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

Tipp City

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

thsi fucking album

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

Jayzu Christ, I haven't heard this since, I dunno, 1997. It's in my closet somewhere. "Tipp City," I think. Maybe I'm confusing with "Full On Idle" (which was on the third Breeders album, right?).

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

correct

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

Surm I was going to be goddamn outraged if you hadn't posted to this thread.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

haha

empty glasses sounded realllly good live

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

oh god how good is HOVERIN

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

split-screen is like my favorite Kim Deal song...but bragging party is like third or fourth maybe, that song is epic Awesomeness!!!

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

I really really really love this album.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

why don't i have this on my ipod? ;_;

mizzell, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

o jeezus rivisiting split-screen now

enough to make a grown man cry

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:40 (fifteen years ago)

(according to youtube, but it's always hard to tell with kim)

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

Kim's one of the most underrated songwriters/lyricists ever...I used to carry the lyrics for this album (often misheard with missing parts, printed off of noaloha.com) around with me in my bookbag in high school...

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

They played Hoverin and I Am Decided when I saw them last summer.
Voted Bragging Party.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

Fact: The Breeder's Title TK has been stuck in my car CD player since summer '02.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:45 (fifteen years ago)

talk about underrated

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:45 (fifteen years ago)

the way that Full on Idle is all just weird ranting, then all of a sudden we're on a rowboat and Kim's imagining something sinister with a violin and bow...genius.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

first revival is pure blissed out deal

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

^yes!

Title TK bummed me out a little bit with the lyrics inset, but it's still a v. good record...I really like "Off You", "T&T" (surf instrumental outtake from Marquee Moon), "Too Alive", and "The She" off that album...

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

off you is just the most destroyed i have, like, ever felt

and yes too alive is something else - almost feels like it could be on this album.

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

i'm sorry i get a little too excited about this album

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

saul wright, I love this album lots too. Too Alive does indeed sound like it could be on Pacer, which is prolley why I like it so much.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

"You are what I need to hear/So fill the air with memorized breaths" is one of my favorite lyrics ever.

trippin lookin at my portfolio (billy), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

ts: headphones/speakers for this

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

Sound best in the car imo

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man, "She's a Girl" just came up on shuffle. I really love this song a lot, too.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

my first breeders song i heard in a car

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

trip maker kind of beat me to the punch on this, but still, plz don't let this song go voteless...

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

I love the exhalation at the beginning.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

yeah. plus it's got the best guitar solo of the album.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

True

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

whoaaaa forgot all about this album! used to love it

del griffith, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

Pacer b/c it is such a pretty little pop gem & pretty much encapsulates everything I love about Kim's songwriting. This album will hence be slated for reevaluation.. I was pretty burnt out on the whole lo-fi thing by the time it came out & probably never gave it its proper due.

still they got me like beezus (Pillbox), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

best lo-fi thing to ever happen in the universe

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

is it really a lo-fi record, though? maybe not as produced as Last Splash, but it definitely doesn't sound like Bee Thousand or anything. Whatevs, glad to see the love for this record here. I remember when it came out, no one seemed to care! But it is very nice. "Bragging Party" is probably my fave. Am I dreaming or was there like a demo version of that song on a fan club 7-inch or something? I think my friend had it.

tylerw, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

"maybe not as produced last splash" is like, a really big understatement

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

I considered the album lo-fi, in that it sounded like it was recorded over the course of an afternoon, in someone's basement somewhere, on a Tascam 4-track cassette joint.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

still they got me like beezus (Pillbox), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

Breaking the Split-Screen Barrier followed closely by She's a Girl.

this record is better than anything recorded by The Breeders imo

Zeno, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but I have lots of love for Last Splash...

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, that's also just not true but whatevs let's keep the love

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

Safari EP 4eva!

still they got me like beezus (Pillbox), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

youre right surm, I really do need to listen to Pod again...but seriously Pacer was huge for me and still is in a way that no Breeders album is...

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

well it's totally different, so i can understand

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

xp like top 3 of the decade for me huge! (I'll go ahead & link here to save you all time & effort)(also much apologies to LJ!)

I really should listen to it more right now, since it's been like the most boring fucking summer ever, and if there is any album for and about Midwestern tedium, it's this one!

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

I had a 2 week period where I thought Pacer > all other Breeders, but that's not true. It is way up there though.

But yeah, Safari EP, man. Just the sound of that thing is so awesome. I wish more songs sounded like "Safari."

trippin lookin at my portfolio (billy), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

i like the dirty, basic and raw sound of Pacer much more than the calculated, more professional sound of The Breeders

Zeno, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

i could never comfortably call the breeders "calculated"

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i meant relatively.

need to listen to Sfari again - too many years..

Zeno, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

but obv the amps are dirtier and less professional in overall sound, and i do hear where you're coming from.

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

so cool that btw the 2 sisters, they have 7 albums

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

(not including pixies)

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

7 + an ep even

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

All bands who walk into a studio are "calculating."

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

you're calculating

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

and i think you're great

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

I walked into a studio and emerged great.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

ranking the Deal twins' discography:

Pacer
Last Splash
Go to the Sugar Altar
Pod (though I really like the demos)
Mountain Battles
Title TK

haven't heard: Boom! Boom! Boom! & the Safari EP

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

Safari EP

^ this would immediately move to the top of your list.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

ha love this exchange of posts TKD6K

janice (surm), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

I was not expecting this thread to get so many posts. I'm surprised -- in a good way. I thought this album was forgotten.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

i feel like i've asked this on another breeders thread - but i remember reading that the songs from this album *were* recorded in some form or another by the breeders ... is that true? are their versions on bootleg? not that i'd expect it to sound radically different.

tylerw, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

um...i'm not sure...i think kim & jim played most of the instruments on this...I seem to remember Kim saying something about Josephine played on a couple songs but they kind of bored her, and she hated Dayton etc....

Kelley might have played on a couple things but I don't think she had much of a hand in things...

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

Coincidentally, I was just looking for an old photo in a box and came across my one issue of Breeders Digest that came with the Live in Stockholm cdep. Is this online as a pdf anywhere? Maybe I should make one.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

I downloaded it online but I don't know if it can be found anymore...that's a pretty cool live album though...

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

I just remembered I used to have a stack of those metal flake blue Breeders bumper stickers too. Dammit! If I knew where they were now, I'd save a couple for myself and sell the rest on ebay for a tiny fortune. :(

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeahhh, i used to have that stockholm live thing on a dubbed cassette -- ysi?

I wouldn't have posted Pod or anything, but this was a limited fan club release that hasn't been manufactured since 1995.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

thx dude -- yeah, it is probably cool, it is way out of print, right?

tylerw, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

way way WAY out of print.

strange jugalette, eh? hmm. yeah, i think I've got all of those EPs. Head To Toe is killer.

tylerw, Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

Found a copy of Safari at a used cd shop a few months ago. Love it!

Trip Maker, Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

ok, i just listened to the hoverin from the divine hammer single, and it sounds like it's all kim. at least it's pretty clear jim is not playing the drums on it.

mizzell, Thursday, 29 July 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, when i saw the amps, kim had a snare drum brought up to the mic that she played. i think.

tylerw, Thursday, 29 July 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

(on "hoverin" i mean)

tylerw, Thursday, 29 July 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, listened this morning and this album is front-to-back awesome. i think for me this is between mom's drunk, bragging party, and breaking the split screen. love the droniness of those tracks.

mizzell, Friday, 30 July 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

I'm very curious about how the results of this poll are going to turn out...like more curious than any other poll I've ever started.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

I listened to this record last weekend – I had to dig it out of my closet. Nothing great: it's not even as good as a Breeders album. I voted for "I Am Decided."

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

agree w/ mizzell 100% irt the awesome droniness of this record. Alfred this is like Is This It?'s drunken aunt: funnier, spacier, weirder, and can absolutely be counted on to call bullshit on the other relatives at all family gatherings in the most entertaining way possible.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

such an awesome album, I love the 1-2 pop punch of "She's a Girl" and "Dedicated" at the end especially. Voted for the latter.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

i had forgotten how good She's a Girl/ Dedicated are, but went with split-screen.

and yet there was still enough lurkers for the title track--which received no shoutouts at all--to win.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 5 August 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

:) I lurked and voted the title track tbh, that's cos it has IRL significance to me tho. And because it's good.
