the killers -- and brandon flowers -- began to be terrible pretty fast (like starting with half of that one sort of good disc they had).

I love Sam's Town because it is melody and bombast and overreach and I am naturally attracted to collisions like that, but yeah, wow, this is bland.

When I first heard "Crossfire," I remarked on my twitter feed thusly:

"Congrats, Brandon Flowers. You're now the owner of John Parr's long-vacated solo career."

"Imagining Brandon sitting around saying "Can I commit fully to this 1985 thing I have going on?" Then a Tom Cochrane lp fell from the sky."

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 31 July 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

Did the other 3 guys want a vacation or something? I don't get why the next Killers album had to be marketed as a solo record.

Looks like he's got plenty to think baout there.

UK tv spots for this have a voiceover which is meant to sound like yr typical american Rock FM DJ, spouting some real bs:

"Do you like this music? I love this music, it's become my favourite song....almost. Well I ermm, well I'm not gonna go into it, but you should go out and get it, that's my recommendation. It's the debut solo album from Brandon Flowers, who I love, he's my favourite singer, called 'Flamingo'. Wonderful album, Brandon Flowers, great singer, 'Flamingo', brilliant. Out now."

80s fetishism has eaten itself, but if that's a bed you want to lie in, how can I deny your love

u have wiked together fiords (imago), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:46 (ten years ago)

As played out as 80s revivalism is, this feels like one of the first times in a while that I've heard someone bring back the orchestral hit stab.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:07 (ten years ago)

I think there's plenty of "cool eighties" revivalism/revisionism to go around (some of it good, some of it bad), but few people have brought back "not-cool eighties" styles and done it as great as this song. imago can say whatever, but this is a different kind of thing. Plenty of people have redone New Order. Not many have redone Mr. Mister.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:10 (ten years ago)

it's too weird for 'whatever' - it's uncool 80s fetishism eating itself, hyperrealised & without sanity - i can understand the love - everything has been thrown in, then some more added just in case

u have wiked together fiords (imago), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:29 (ten years ago)

I dunno, can one just appreciate the way songs sounded (new-at-the-time technology and production techniques) and were constructed (melodies, swells and flows and cadences) without wishing the world was the same place it was 30 years ago? I think so, because that's me. I don't consider it a fetish. I just consider it one of the ways I like songs to be written and how I like songs to sound. Don't pay attention to dopes in youtube comments who are always saying "music was never as good as it was when I was in high school!" That's bullshit. There always has been and always will be good music. But I think it's a perfectly legitimate practice to pull from one sound of one time to expand on what was added to music in general when that style was brand new. Nobody bags on jazz dudes or composers who do this. People only have a problem when it's framed inside pop music.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:40 (ten years ago)

timellison, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:05 (ten years ago)

this song (and the whole new album) is produced by ariel rechtshaid so yeah Kitchen Person is otm about the haim sound

i like this a fair bit though, surprised it isn't getting more hype

nose, Friday, 27 March 2015 16:17 (ten years ago)

He spent a year recording the album in Vegas and L.A. with producer Ariel Rechtshaid (Haim, Vampire Weekend). They ended up calling in guest appearances from Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant and Haim's Danielle Haim, as well as session hands including Joey Waronker, Kenny Aronoff and Bruce Hornsby, who plays on two tracks. "Nobody plays piano like him," Flowers says of Hornsby. "There's a particular emotion that he conjures up, which I associate with being a teenager."

Another song samples U.K. synth-pop act Bronski Beat's 1984 hit "Smalltown Boy." Flowers' favorite tune at the moment is the dramatic "Still Want You." "It's fun," he says. "The chorus goes, 'Crime is on the rise, I still want you/Climate change is dead, I still want you/Nuclear distress, I still want you/Earth is heating up, I still want you/Hurricanes and floods, I still want you. . .' I love that chorus."

anyhoo, liked this a lot, didn't really expect to, song construction and production are great, his voice is made for this sappy synth-crooner shit, the lyrics are silly at best/atrocious at worst but it doesn't really damage the songs' overall effect

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 12:09 (ten years ago)

this album is great

...because you want to make something real. You want to make a Phil Collins record.

i'm into this

goole, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 21:53 (ten years ago)

This album is wonderful. Still Want You is my current favourite. Those backing vocals in the second verse are just everything.

listened to "Can't Deny My Love" for the first time since early May

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 August 2015 19:08 (ten years ago)

Love "Lonely Town", especially the middle section " do you hear the thud when I fall" etc. The whole record is ace

mr veg was on board with the new album on paper - we listened to it in the car & as I'm
swooning & flailing he says "Its uh, a bit ~dancier~ than I thought"

:D

I was weirded out by that injection of autotune at first but I think without it that part just sounds too creepy

I can change for you

GUYS IT WAS SO GOOD

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:08 (ten years ago)

did he dance

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:09 (ten years ago)

1) I haven't danced that much at a show in a long time.
2) He's such a good frontman*
3) At one point he said that it was the part of the show where the audience could chose a cover from a couple they'd been rehearing. He started to list off the covers and for the first he said, "A great song called "Don't Change" by INXS" which received p much no reaction from anyone in the crowd except me who literally yelp/screamed and jumped with excitement (which made people turn around and stare at me) because that's one of the best songs ever. Sadly, they didn't play that or any of the others he listed but opted for an older song instead. I'd prob have passed out if they had done it so it's ok.
4) He did a cover of a Buster Poindexter Song.
5) Did I mention that he was totally fucking amazing and engaging and great?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:12 (ten years ago)

x-post - Oh yes he did. He is the cutest dancer!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:13 (ten years ago)

*I'm sure I've probably told this before somewhere on here but I saw The Killers open up for Stellastarr* at the Electric Ballroom in London in 2004 a couple months before Hot Fuss was released. I had no idea who they were at the time but after watching them I said, "Whoever that band is they're going to be huge - the lead singer was fucking amazing.". It's the only time I've ever been blown away by an opening act I had never even heard of. A couple months later they were on the cover of the NME etc and I was like holy shit it's that dude!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:15 (ten years ago)

at what point did he take his clothes off?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:25 (ten years ago)

xp yeah i saw them on that tour too, i remember thinking they felt like a one-song band (that song being 'mr brightside') but they definitely had a special ~something~ (unlike e.g. stellastarr*)

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:27 (ten years ago)

x-post - Sadly never. He really is so beautiful. Gah.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:44 (ten years ago)

Anyway, Al, he probably wears the magic mormon underpants ;_;.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:50 (ten years ago)

Though I'm not sure how they'd fit under jeans that tight. huh.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 13:52 (ten years ago)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 20:43 (ten years ago)

he even sounds a little like Michael fuuuuck

now if only he would strip off a la Hutchence we'd be getting somewhere

something about Ariel Rechtshaid's production/mixing bugs me. pretty harsh. Haim/Sky/Flowers albums can't really be cranked too loud.

Aw, you guys are cute. And OTM. ;)

Thanks for the link, GP. I wound up finding that last night and swooning a little. Dreamy.

I had therapy last night and I told my therapist that I'd gone to the show and she was like, "You're the fifth person I've seen today that has mentioned being there last night!". So weird.

Also, fwiw, I still really like the 1st Stellastarr*'s first album.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 13:25 (ten years ago)

Love the Cure shout-out that kicks off the album, like 'oh, you wanna talk about the 80s?'.
