Good writing on the "Signs," Mary J., and "Like I Love You" blurbs, some dude.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

boils down to Lovers and Friends vs. Sensual Seduction for me

Party Car! (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:30 (fifteen years ago)

Amazingly, I've never heard "Sensual Seduction/Sexual Eruption."

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

whut

that song is so great

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

its pretty much a straight early 80s electro-funk homage

but yeah its great

Party Car! (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

Listening to it now, and, yeah, it's smoove.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

It got no airplay here and I didn't seek it.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

video is better than the song

iatee, Friday, 6 August 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

It got no airplay here

i can attest to the contrary

but i digress

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

You're probably right -- I just have no memory of it.

I voted for "1, 2 Step," just cuz.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

still don't know what i'm voting for

atm i'm leaning towards "locked up"

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

I love "Signs" -- really happy it made Stylus' decade best.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

could you make a case for "Step in the Name of Love" being on this list? I guess it's more R&B.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

1. "The Next Episode"
2. "Pimpin' All Over The World"
3. "Best of Me (Part 2)

christopher dullan (Tape Store), Friday, 6 August 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

There are some more obv choices (Justin, Kanye), but I'm prob going w/ "You" or "Stutter (Remix)"

::shrugs:: i thought about trying to be more objective/canonical but ultimately decided to just go with my own gut, which meant shafting a lot of consensus favorites that i'm not that into (Oh, Umbrella, Crazy In Love, Hey Ya, Yeah, Goodies, Crazy, etc.)

some dude, Saturday, 7 August 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

could you make a case for "Step in the Name of Love" being on this list? I guess it's more R&B.

one of the forthcoming lists in this series will be pure R&B with no rapping, and "Step" will be waaaay up there on that one

some dude, Saturday, 7 August 2010 01:48 (fifteen years ago)

also voted for "Put It On Me" because obv i put it at #1 and also i'm not sure anyone else will

some dude, Saturday, 7 August 2010 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

Love that all but about 3 or 4 of these have "f/"

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Saturday, 7 August 2010 01:53 (fifteen years ago)

'put it on me' @ #1 is a bold & smart choice imo. heavily influential but somewhat forgotten track also

blap...tremendo (deej), Saturday, 7 August 2010 02:37 (fifteen years ago)

haha i have never heard your no 1!

(this list has been v useful in actually discovering a few of these for the first time - if a song didn't cross over to the uk in 00-02, chances are i've never heard it.)

seeing "okay", "best of me pt 2" and "last night" crop up was really awesome, those are also personal favs that i feel have mostly been forgotten.

"all falls down" - i think this is easily kanye's best single.

my vote will be between "addictive" and "ain't it funny (murder remix)".

just 2, Cee-Lo and Snoop. probably coulda been more solo performances if I actually liked Kanye or Andre 3000's rapper-turned-singer stuff.

HEYYYYYYYY-EEYYYY

ballerrr (The Reverend), Saturday, 7 August 2010 12:13 (fifteen years ago)

Don't really think of that as a rap/r&b crossover at all tho tbh.

ballerrr (The Reverend), Saturday, 7 August 2010 12:14 (fifteen years ago)

yeah in the blurb i kinda agreed but still felt it needed to be included

"where i wanna be" is from 2000 btw

ballerrr (The Reverend), Saturday, 7 August 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

voted Green Light. like that 80's electro feel and hearing Andre 3000 rap again. lots of hot fire in this list tho. "Where the Party At" was my jam in 2001.

DiMarcel Marceaupower (San Te), Saturday, 7 August 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

Top five:

Ghostface Killah f/ Ne-Yo - “Back Like That” (2006)
Kanye West f/ Syleena Johnson - “All Falls Down” (2004)
Keri Hilson f/ Lil Wayne - “Turnin’ Me On” (2008)
Justin Timberlake f/ T.I. - "My Love" (2006)
Missy Elliott f/ Ludacris - "One Minute Man" (2001)

Voting for Miss Keri Baaaabbyyy...

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Saturday, 7 August 2010 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

6. Fabolous f/ Nate Dogg - "Can't Deny It" (2001)

^^^ underrated classic. for me it's probably between this and "I'm A Flirt", although there's lotsa good stuff on the list (and I agree about the OTMness of celebrating "Put It On Me")

stuff that's what it is (bernard snowy), Saturday, 7 August 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

ooh but I also have an enormous soft spot for "Where the Party At", and might have to vote for it just to make sure it gets some love

stuff that's what it is (bernard snowy), Saturday, 7 August 2010 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

Bobby Valentino f/ Lil Wayne - “Tell Me” (2005)
R. Kelly featuring T.I. and T-Pain - "I'm A Flirt (Remix)" (2007)
Snoop Dogg - “Sensual Seduction” (2007

b/w these 3, leaning towards bobby v

for those about to s1ock, we slutsk you (m bison), Saturday, 7 August 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

I'm voting "Stutter (Remix)" because I dig how frightening/creepy it is (mostly because of Mystikal's verse, jesus!)

christopher dullan (Tape Store), Saturday, 7 August 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

I loved Cedric's routine on that...

"of course you're stutterin when ya got MYSTIKAL hollerin' at ya".

honestly after i heard the remix with him i never wantedt o hear the original again

Obie Once Trice Three Times a Lady (San Te), Saturday, 7 August 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

i wasn't aware that anyone but me legit liked "bust it baby pt 2" that much... for some reason jr rotem's sugary production bugs me on almost all his tracks except that one. but yeah i love it.

umm i voted "the next episode" but this was tough.

teledyldonix, Saturday, 7 August 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

plies & neyo should do a colab that samples "every little thing she does is magic" imo

finally got this playlist completed (minus "empire state of mind" -- not that i hate it, but too soon) and i refuse to listen to anything else for the next few days

J0rdan S., Sunday, 8 August 2010 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

would it be controversial to politely ask for an upload of that? i was thinking of doing the same thing but that's a lot of work if it's not necessary. i know this is MAJOR LABEL MUSIC but uh

yeah if you gimme a little bit to zip all the stuff and upload it etc

thanks a lot :)

werner herzomg (samosa gibreel), Sunday, 8 August 2010 05:30 (fifteen years ago)

there will be 47 songs -- the ones missing are "flashing lights" & "good life" because when i went to add them to the playlist i realized that i didn't have 'graduation' on my computer so this was sort of like a little reminder to do it -- not to mention that i don't really need to hear those two songs right now

also "empire state of mind"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 8 August 2010 05:32 (fifteen years ago)

also there's a slight chance that i copped a few of them off itunes before i went on my filestube binge last night to fill out the playlist, in which case you'll have to track down those few yourself (filestube will work)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 8 August 2010 05:37 (fifteen years ago)

Was Luv U Better actually good? I can't remember it at all (not a good sign.)

horseshoe, Sunday, 8 August 2010 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

i have never been able to love "addicted" btw because i find lata mangeshkar's voice really annoying. rakim's verse is obvs great though.

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 August 2010 06:23 (fifteen years ago)

isnt the song called 'addictive'?

max, Monday, 9 August 2010 06:31 (fifteen years ago)

if im voting 'favorite' than yeah that but in terms of 'best rap/r&b crossover'... i dunno man that doesnt feel like a crossover, rakim owns that track so hard he makes all of truth hurts verses sound like an extended intro

max, Monday, 9 August 2010 06:32 (fifteen years ago)

there is a part in "okay" that sounds just like my alarm clock -- i'm having like a reverse pavlovian reaction

blap...tremendo (deej), Monday, 9 August 2010 06:46 (fifteen years ago)

it's actually only two creepy things -- in the intro being all "i want to be your father, your mother, your brother, your sister" and then being "you were 9 but you were fine"

there's some joints on here that would've made my list -- there's also some utter crap, but i'm gonna download

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 August 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that mix has some jams besides the 4 that are also on my list, but it's also full of the sort of stuff i strenuously avoided and could've written essays about why they aren't on the list

Tuomgwai -- Come On Da Young (some dude), Monday, 9 August 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

the only song I really hate on this list is Luv You Better, cuz I can just imagine LL Cool J performing it with a single tear like the Indian from that one old commercial...

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Monday, 9 August 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

btw there are some good mixtapes out there with every Fabolous R&B feature, every Jadakiss R&B feature, etc.

― max, Monday, August 9, 2010 2:32 AM (10 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

yeah i fucked that up, i always think Rakim is saying "addicted" in his verse and get the title wrong. anyway there's a lot of stuff on this list that doesn't totally jibe with the overall concept and spirit but i just kind of kept to the basic frame of a) i like it and b) it features an R&B singer singing and a rapper rapping (only abandoned this for the Snoop and Cee-Lo songs where they rap and sing, and the Diddy/Keyshia song where they both just sing). a lot of songs COULD have fit on here and been interesting conversation pieces but i just didn't like them enough.

Tuomgwai -- Come On Da Young (some dude), Monday, 9 August 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

oh i wasnt criticizing it being on the list it definitely counts, i was making a more general point about the extent to which rakim murders that shit

max, Monday, 9 August 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

totally disagree that rakim steals the show from truth hurts, it's a great verse but her performance is amazing too

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 9 August 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah idk, i feel like she's window dressing for dope production and an amazing guest verse

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 August 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

nah not at all, relistening now and she's definitely as much the focal point as anything else - those words could be performed in so many ways along the ingénue/dominatrix spectrum and she pitches it perfectly between in-charge feline prowling and on-edge creeping powerlessness. the way she ups the ante on every line of the second verse alone is awe-inspiring - if anything's the climax of the song it's that verse.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 9 August 2010 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

Voted for "Slow Jamz," although reading this thread the other day put "Can't Let You Go" in my head.

horseshoe, Monday, 9 August 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

lex are u really trynna argue that effin truth hurts was on par with rakim

thats like hearing a bleek guest verse on a mary j blige song & saying he holds his own

blap...tremendo (deej), Monday, 9 August 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

that rakim verse is stupid. cannot in anyway get along with his rakim escobar change up.

lex otm about "addictive". great performance, great tune. obv rakim is great on it too, but some of you are paying more attentionto the names involved than the actual song

"mc hammer" (f/ mc hammer) (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

i thought truth hurts performance was a lil over the top & silly -- its sorta telegraphed by how hugely wide her mouth opens in the video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTjPmgN98H8

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:36 (fifteen years ago)

like shes hyper-enunciating/acting the singing

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:37 (fifteen years ago)

yeah her/the song is kinda weird and campy. it works, but it also makes total sense that she was a one hit wonder, have no idea how that approach would work more than once.

dark twisted fanta girl (some dude), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

agreed

after i reviewed keyshia cole for stylus back in the day i got sent a copy of her follow up album. p unlistenable

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i was just basing my reaction to rakims verse on his name and not on the fact that it fucking slays... great name though

max, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

it does fucking slay! i didn't deny that

"mc hammer" (f/ mc hammer) (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

max, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:25 (fifteen years ago)

i love the "k" especially, its great

max, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeesh. that wasn't even in reference to you, really

"mc hammer" (f/ mc hammer) (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:32 (fifteen years ago)

im taking it very personally

max, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

yeah her/the song is kinda weird and campy. it works, but it also makes total sense that she was a one hit wonder, have no idea how that approach would work more than once.

i never did pick up TH's album...really kinda intrigued by it now though. the closest comparison point i'm coming up with is the similarly campy blu cantrell, who never really worked over a whole album either.

keyshia cole is different surely, the reason she's never clicked for me outside of a few singles and guest appearances is that she always comes across as a b-grade mary j blige. not bad or ineffective exactly, but just...too similar and just not quite as good.

obv rakim's verse slays, and truth hurts' vocals slay, and the beat slays, the entire song slays and that's why it's here right? i just don't think any of its components outshine the others.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

i guess rev was talking about me and yeah i guess i am in the minority finding rakim's attempt in his 40s to suddenly pretend he is scarface a smh moment.

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:03 (fifteen years ago)

neither t.hurts nor rakim woulda had a hit there without each other, they're perfectly balanced to the beat. such be the typical synergy dummies appear not to fathom on a rap/rnb crossover list thread.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:10 (fifteen years ago)

although yeah deej was right the first time with the 'paid in full' throwback observation - rakim's effect is in sheer presence, as well as complimentary vocal timbre, rather than hm having like a notably hot 16 or whatever

bleek analogy is completely nonsensical so i dunno what to say about that

r|t|c, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:15 (fifteen years ago)

and double yeah, truth hurts is awesome on that shit fuiud

r|t|c, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:16 (fifteen years ago)

so in "let it go," she should really be singing about mucus, is what you're saying?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

and in "last night" she should be singing about putting on nasal strips?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

fun fact: a full 1/3rd of these songs aren't about love or sex or relationships in any way, it's not like "The Next Episode" is the only outlier.

Keyshia Cole is a really solid singles artist, even if she comes off like a Mary J. clone and her singing is goofy sometimes really i feel like she's earned her spot with some good songs

dark twisted fanta girl (some dude), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, I always thought The Next Episode wasn't crossover because I always considered it a straight hip-hop track, since Nate Dogg's bit was really just an outro.

will smh for all eternity at some of these votes. 2 for fucking 'green light'??

didn't vote myself naturally but it wouldve been one of the early fab trinity i think - perhaps '4ever'.

'no better love' seems to get realer and realer with age. was pretty real to begin with anyway.

really enjoyed the list in general though, i just liked the quintessential ships-ness of it mainly. (can someone be quixotically common-sense...? haha)
