(By the way, this is AWESOME)

emil.y, Friday, 13 August 2010 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

How is individual voter falsity calculated? It doesn't look like it's just based on quantity -- did you guys somehow distinguish between varying levels of falseness?

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

i am the no. 10 metal infidel of ilx. hurrah!

ha, wolves, what a bunch of sissies (Ioannis), Friday, 13 August 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

This is the first ILX poll where I'm not in the farthest circles of centricity. Being part of the masses feels... dirty. Whose Kent? he's the only person with whom I have more than 40% similarity. Glad Johnny & Nate are right there, too.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 13 August 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

Here is the album poll retabulated without any of the voters who voted for Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin, to see what the anti-classicists like. "Non-BSLZ%" shows this as a percentage of the album's total votes, and the Non-BS/Non-LZ columns show counts and percentages from excluding either band's supporters one at a time. Click the arrows in the column headings to sort by any column.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

so you can see what LZ fans like but sabbath fans dont and vice versa, as well as what ppl who didnt vote for either what they voted for.
Use the arrows in the columns!

HAAAA YES! #1 false metal voter! I am so proud right now.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 August 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

If you guys are taking stat-crunching requests, I'd love to see falsity cross-tabulated against centricity to get an idea of how false ILX metal is in general.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

KISS is false?

i. just. don't. know. what. to. say. to. that. :-(

ha, wolves, what a bunch of sissies (Ioannis), Friday, 13 August 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

Here is the album poll retabulated without the voters who voted for more than 10% False Metal. "True Points" shows this alternate score, and "True%" is that as a percentage of the album's total points.

Kyuss is the truest metal album of all time SURPRISE

Faint's the track, it scored 70 points. It's damn good too, ignore cheap zings.

Seriously, this whole setup is magnificent and the poll was epic, thanks a million!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

Alright. Some Dude. Glad someone else still cares about Appetite for Destruction as much as I do. They were my first "favorite band". Some of those songs don't even feel like somebody wrote them. It's like they were just always there. Glad it did well along with most of the albums that I voted for. I've been getting in to a lot of bands that i haven't heard before due to this. Ulver is unbelievable. I really like the recent stuff. And Boris "Flood". I love them but had never heard that album. It's slowly becoming my favorite. Thanks everyone who put this poll together.

I was only #23 in voter centricity https://pub.needlebase.com/actions/visualizer/V2Visualizer.do?domain=ILM-Alltime-Metal-Poll&query=Voter+Centricity
so 22 people did better than I did.

Thanks for the stats. Kind of funny that only two people had the #1 album as their #1 vote (me and Herman, hey). Thanks for the poll too! Metal's not really a genre that I think about or follow all that much, so plenty of new-to-me stuff to check...

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Friday, 13 August 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder if anyone actually picked the whole top 10? Must ask glenn about that.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

No, nobody got the whole top 10, but Neil S got the top 9, and then flubbed it by missing Emperor. Here's a page for everybody who got at least 5 of the top 10.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

Mordy: Needle doesn't do regression analysis yet, but I just ran a quick one offline comparing Centricity and Falsity, and the correlation was fairly weak. But the voters as a set would rank 36th on the falsity list, and as the Genre Ranking shows, False Metal was the 5th ranked genre (of 14 major ones). So that's pretty False.

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

EZ Snappin welcome to the ilm metal hivemind!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, and I just added voter-rankings by the number of their albums that made the top 10, top 100 and top 300. Nobody got 50 albums into the top 100; Per had 45 and S Holloway had 40. James D had only 2. 8 voters got all 50 albums into the top 300, and at the other end, Some Dude had the lowest top-300 count with 12.

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

some dude only voted for 15 tho!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

20, actually. But two of those were Kix and Sailing the Seas of Cheese, so yeah, that should only count as 15.

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

He's an honorary falser!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:21 (fifteen years ago)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:39 (fifteen years ago)

Totally happy to be the fourth falsest voter, though I do not understand why Headgirl is "false" if both Motorhead and Girlschool are "true" metal...

It is hard to take seriously a hard rock poll where not one of the 1970s Scorpions LPs makes it into the top 300. Fuckers.

Kent Burt, Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

There's Kent - my nearest voter in centricity. Probably because of the Scorpions you mentioned. Philistines, the whole lot of 'em.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:54 (fifteen years ago)

Kent, if it wasn't on http://www.metal-archives.com/index.php it was labelled false.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, and the other ranking the Needle version has is a consolidated Album+Track Artist chart. To me this is probably the most interesting end-product of the poll, or at least the one that seems to me to represent the most consensus. Some of the bafflingly low album placements, for example (Judas Priest perhaps most dramatically), make more sense when grouped by artist to show both aggregate support and how it was fractured. The list still starts with BS/LZ/Metallica this way, but then gets more intriguing...

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 14 August 2010 03:18 (fifteen years ago)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

so everyone like the genre by genre results?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 12:06 (fifteen years ago)

Aldo thought the BM one looked like a good list in order, and colonel poo loved the thrash & DM lists.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

but do the other experts in those genres agree?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

the actual heavy metal and heavy rock ones looked good, and the doom one was great though not quite the order I'd expect.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 12:49 (fifteen years ago)

Not convinced by the ordering in the grindcore one, although the content is ace.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Saturday, 14 August 2010 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

Johnny did you like the hair metal one?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

Not particularly. What are those Pantera albums doing in there?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 14 August 2010 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

Metal archives said Pantera was hair metal!

btw chuck didn't vote, so that meant lots didn't get a vote. But on the rolling metal threads, most don't like hair metal. That seems to be the preserve of non metallers tbh. there's no rolling hair metal thread, why not start one?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

Plus hair metal seemed to be more a singles genre. But i thought motley crue & ratt would have sneaked in the top 300, but then again, some huge albums didn't make the top 300. Look what just failed to get in (along with Boris - Pink and the metallica - black album)

If the poll had been all canon more would have complained.
We still did better than any magazine poll, right?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

One big dif. between now and the MTV era, I suppose, is that a lot of these BM/DM/doom bands are underground by design. Like, they've gone out of their way not to court the mainstream, and some of them - like, say, Ulver - even seem to have taken steps to throw off their own fans every couple of albums.

― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, August 14, 2010 5:52 PM (1 minute ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

yeah, but so were the big thrash bands, initially.

ha, wolves, what a bunch of sissies (Ioannis), Saturday, 14 August 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Then Metallica sold out and coincidentally went shite.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

Metallica wanting to title their debut Metal up Your Ass (ho ho ho), for example.

xp

ha, wolves, what a bunch of sissies (Ioannis), Saturday, 14 August 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

Well, the difference in being underground in the '80s and the '10s is really huge. Metallica didn't even bother making a proper video until 1988 because they knew it would never get played on MTV except at 3 in the morning. Now, MTV is no longer the proving ground. With the internet, bands can be as well-known or as little-known as they want to be.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 14 August 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

I'd far rather bands concentrated on making great music rather than trying to be commercial and selling millions of records by being watered down.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

when you're everywhere you're nowhere tho. people need shit to be filtered to some extent imo.

gatekeepers to the rescue...

Re: the cookie monster vocals thing, it doesn't bother me at all in BM/doomy stuff but in other cases it annoys me... Of the various new-to-me things I've checked out from the list so far, the Obituary album is one of two I've not liked (the other is Ulver's Blood Inside which is genuinely one of the worst albums I've ever heard...).

Gavin in Leeds, Saturday, 14 August 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

There you go again. Being commercial doesn't necessarily mean being watered down.

You don't seem to remember it, but metal (yes, hair metal!) was totally controversial in the '80s, just like rap was in the '90s. Some of the most popular stuff, sales-wise rather than radio-wise, was the dirtiest or the sexiest of it. Still, it appealed to gobs of people anyway. These groups aimed directly at the mainstream doing what they wanted to do.

Now the scene runs away from the mainstream like a bunch of little sissy boys.

lol, just wait til LJ sees that!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

I'd far rather bands concentrated on making great music rather than trying to be commercial and selling millions of records by being watered down.

wouldn't have Nevermind that way, tho, right?

ha, wolves, what a bunch of sissies (Ioannis), Saturday, 14 August 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

johnny, hair metal was a lot of shite mostly. Some people were more interested in how they looked rather than the music.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

Haha, I'm absolutely up for discussing it - I did also give Bergtatt a listen and that was ok (also Spotify went straight from Blood Inside onto their folky album, which sounded nice enough).

Gavin in Leeds, Saturday, 14 August 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

Look, we'll have to agree to disagree, but I honestly think you're one of the most close-minded people I've ever met when it comes to music. I mean, I didn't like a lot of the stuff on these polls, but I've heard it and I know WHY I don't like it.

Your excuses are flimsy and the constant needling of me about what I like makes you quite a douchebag.

re: BM/DM vocals, the best way i can describe it is that its a v v hard entry point, but once you delve a little bit, theres a ton of variety within both, like the peste noire dude sounds nothing like varg who sounds nothing like ulver (in a vocal strict BM sense), but there is a palatte theyre all working from that you can understand. the way i usually describe it to peeps is that the first time you listen to a classical violin piece theres sort of a surface knowledge and reaction to it, but when you really dig in you can hear the differences when leonid kogan plays it vs gil shaham or itzhak perlman.

as for the diff between DM and BM vocals, i summed it up here somewhere but i dont know where and i dont have enough coffee in me yet to do it justice

Black Metal vs Death Metal

gg eileen (jjjusten), Saturday, 14 August 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

problem is, there are no huge Metallica/Priest/Sabbath-caliber bands to get people a-wonderin' "what's up?" anymore.

I consider Mastodon, Opeth, High On Fire, Enslaved, Gojira, Nachtmystium and others to be that high caliber. There's simply ten times more to choose from, so audiences are more split. More extreme bands can sell as many albums as the ones I mentioned, but there are no longer consensus blockbusters.

After studying the list some more, I realized Scorpions only had four albums with 9 votes total. That's just insane. I know I wanted to resubmit my ballot to include Lovedrive and Riot - Fire Down Under. It wouldn't have made any difference -- Lovedrive got zero votes! As did Animal Magnetism. As did Blackout! WTF! Those albums are classic. You can't go wrong with anything between Fly To The Rainbow and Blackout.

Another under-rated album is Atomic Rooster - Death Walks Behind You. Early hard rock/proto-metal, fans of Sabbath, Deep Purple, Budgie should definitely hear it.

At the moment I'm listening to Saint Vitus - Born Too Late. I would never have guessed second rate 80s revivalist doom would nearly beat Paranoid. That's just crazy. I like The Obsessed, Pentagram and Trouble well enough -- saw the latter two live in the past year. I remember hearing the Saint Vitus debut way back when since I heard everything that came out on SST. I could appreciate what they were trying to do, but the recording was shit. Maybe because they had even less a recording budget than Sabbath did 15 years previously, or maybe because Spot just couldn't get a proper thick low end to save his life. Born Too Late is definitely an improvement over their debut and would benefit from a remaster. But top ten?

ok, need to clarify one point:

i meant today's bands are not up to past groups re commercial viability, rather than the aesthetic worth.

and now i'm off to dinner...

Apparently it got in the Decibel hall of fame, it's a very influential album, beloved of lots of people.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

I'm glad it got in.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 August 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

All in all I think its a great list of 300 massive records. If 10 or 15 of seem way out of line you should have vetoed them during the process.

I thought all subgenres were well represented and it was pretty even. Apparently doom and black metal is very popular on ILM, and if you let people vote for Jane's Addiction and MSP and Soungarden then they are going to because thats just what some think is really hard music... suck it up, this wasn't a strictly metal poll.

Anyway, I'm really glad that YOB and Agalloch placed. Like every YOB album made it! Thats an amazing result! Don't just look at the stuff you think was bad and messed up, look at the all the amazing stuff that made it in the list.

Where something places is always going to be bollocks, just think of it as an awesome list of 300 great albums that 60 or so weird internet people thought were the best heavy/hard rock and metal albums. I see very little evidence of any tactical voting or conspiracy to get certain things placed higher.

Thats just my two cents. I'm not really following the thread, I've kind of just been in bed drinking juice and keeping my crackers down.

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Saturday, 14 August 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

Coming to this really fucking late. Having guilt about the albums I should have nominated/voted for, even if it wouldn't have made a difference in the long run. The sheer breadth of the poll must have been a vote-splitter for most of us - I know it was for me. It's an entirely personal thing, but I've got separate classifications for heavy rock and metal in my mind, and one isn't necessarily any better than the other, so compiling a list of my favourites in a single poll is just impossible. But at the end of the day, I don't take the ranking from 1 to 300 as the point of polls like this - I like getting introduced to stuff I might never have heard or given a chance to before.

But really, no Tad in this list at all? WTF??

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Saturday, 14 August 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

(I know I didn't vote for God's Balls, which I believe was the nominated one, as it's filed in my mind as 'rock', not 'metal', but Inhaler and Infrared Riding Hood are totally metal.)

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Saturday, 14 August 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

I saw that Tad/Nirvana tour. Nirvana might have even been the opener! Christ, I hadn't thought about Tad in forever, and no longer have the tapes. Now I gotta find 'em. I still don't get how some people don't understand the "heavy rock" part of this poll. Tad most definitely qualify.

That's what was great about this poll, mixing up the rock with the metal.

Fastnbulbous, Sunday, 15 August 2010 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Nirvana opened for Tad on that tour.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Sunday, 15 August 2010 08:43 (fifteen years ago)

I still don't get how some people don't understand the "heavy rock" part of this poll.

We got that part, but as I explained above, for some of us it must be apples and oranges. For me metal and heavy rock are like twin brothers - they're similar in many ways, but they're not the same thing. I had to go with one or the other.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Sunday, 15 August 2010 09:23 (fifteen years ago)

I guess it makes sense to be in the mood for one or the other. I can't imagine anyone of my generation not liking any heavy rock, but it might true of some. For my own site I did make separate lists for metal and heavy rock. But it's also interesting to see how everything matches up together. I keep a master list that mixes metal, rock, reggae, punk, folk, everything that I listen to. Few people are obsessive enough to be motivated to do that, but polls are a great snapshot of peoples' tastes. It would be cool if everyone posted their ballots on their profiles. It's a good way to find things to relate to, or even better yet, learn who's really knowledgeable of some genre and could make recommendations.
