young chick on def jam - got this sort of keri jr. vibe to her i guess, lots of potential i think. her album from last year is pretty good, got most of the usual suspects working on it (dream, shaffer, los/tricky, et al)

anyway it's "bed" without much hesitation, i really love a handful of these but there's few polls i can think of in which "bed" would lose

i mean rev "bed" represents one pillar of what is the terry/mckinney genius; the dudes do two kinds of songs together basically, the sparer ones like "bed" or "purple kisses" and the more lush ones like "rockin that shit" or "FILA". so either you have a problem with their shit or you just really hate holiday

fwiw he considers "moving mountains" to be his most underrated song.

it's between "high price" and "drink in my cup" for me, i guess; i know we're talking about songwriting rather than production and obviously "umbrella" is a monolith, but i kind of feel like i should vote for something with quintessentially terius production rather than a garageband preset beat.

"just like me" will prob be the most underrated song on this list.

if anyone but holiday was on that it'd be a different story

'16 @ war' also contains terry's immortal couplet "i'm 16 y.o / asking god oh why oh!". i'm sure i mentioned it somewhere.

this poll is kinda difficult, it depends what you wanna say with your vote. i love 'so good' same as anyone else but e.r deserve equal credit for the way they brought it to life; and in terms of songwriting it's more impressive crafting a hit for a established artist with a particular persona and level of public expectation. i'm tempted by 'just fine' tbh, it really was a bit of a feat.

otoh it's difficult to overlook the pure like, cultural achievement of 'single ladies', which everyone knows and responds to and will basically live forever (in a way 'umbrella' won't), so i dunno.

perennial personal favourites i'd also like to take a moment to rep: 'just like me', 'leavin'.

with 'single ladies' i just tend to look at it like: ok got a pen and a pad, let's write a song for beyonce. errrm. and to come out (most likely 10 minutes later) with 'single ladies', and - crucially - to be able to say "yep there it is, that's enough, it's either iconic or bullshit" no bets hedged is some almost incalculably bravura shit.

tricky deserves half the credit though of course, but yeah the whole thing is immaculately conceived. (the label not fannying around focus-grouping first also key.)

cosign that "leavin'" is a great song; so's "just fine" but the og got overtaken in my affections by the swizz beatz remix.

i've only really heard it in the short clip MTV's been using for VMA promos tbh but every time i see it i'm like "oh that's that song? totally not as bad as people made me think it'd be."

"Bed" is a total fucking favourite so this choice was kinda easy

of the grinding hard-attitude rawk tracks on rated r it ranks beneath "g4l" and "wait your turn" for me - "hard" isn't quite in the same vein but close enough that, knowing your hate, i assumed you'd also hate takes on "hard" but with fewer hooks and more posturing.

i do adore 'leavin' but on reflection it's less for any partic songwriting skillz and more just for sounding like true romance updated for the 00s
