young chick on def jam - got this sort of keri jr. vibe to her i guess, lots of potential i think. her album from last year is pretty good, got most of the usual suspects working on it (dream, shaffer, los/tricky, et al)

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

by 'last year' i mean 2008

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:03 (fifteen years ago)

anyway it's "bed" without much hesitation, i really love a handful of these but there's few polls i can think of in which "bed" would lose

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

i feel so 'gtfo' whenever anyone reps for "bed"

welcome back, ma$ed god (The Reverend), Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

you're fronting and u know it - if anyone but holiday was on that it'd be a different story

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

Would have voted "Friend Lover" if it was a nom. As it is, "Umbrella" = "So Good" > "High Price" = "Drink In My Cup" > "Single Ladies" > "Touch My Body" = "Bed"

Tim F, Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:19 (fifteen years ago)

i mean rev "bed" represents one pillar of what is the terry/mckinney genius; the dudes do two kinds of songs together basically, the sparer ones like "bed" or "purple kisses" and the more lush ones like "rockin that shit" or "FILA". so either you have a problem with their shit or you just really hate holiday

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:37 (fifteen years ago)

he really does hate j holiday

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

Mister AOR (The Reverend) wrote this on thread The-Dream Love King anticipation thread on board I Love Music on Jul 13, 2010

j. holiday makes me want to solder my ears shut, basically

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:47 (fifteen years ago)

it's like one of those hi dere things that fundamentally can't be argued against

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 21 August 2010 05:48 (fifteen years ago)

"16 @ war" is pretty good and i never knew terius wrote it!!!

fwiw he considers "moving mountains" to be his most underrated song.

it's between "high price" and "drink in my cup" for me, i guess; i know we're talking about songwriting rather than production and obviously "umbrella" is a monolith, but i kind of feel like i should vote for something with quintessentially terius production rather than a garageband preset beat.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 21 August 2010 07:28 (fifteen years ago)

"just like me" will prob be the most underrated song on this list.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 21 August 2010 07:30 (fifteen years ago)

if anyone but holiday was on that it'd be a different story

― k3vin k., Friday, August 20, 2010 10:18 PM Bookmark

oh sure. i completely ackowledge this.

welcome back, ma$ed god (The Reverend), Saturday, 21 August 2010 08:12 (fifteen years ago)

'16 @ war' also contains terry's immortal couplet "i'm 16 y.o / asking god oh why oh!". i'm sure i mentioned it somewhere.

this poll is kinda difficult, it depends what you wanna say with your vote. i love 'so good' same as anyone else but e.r deserve equal credit for the way they brought it to life; and in terms of songwriting it's more impressive crafting a hit for a established artist with a particular persona and level of public expectation. i'm tempted by 'just fine' tbh, it really was a bit of a feat.

otoh it's difficult to overlook the pure like, cultural achievement of 'single ladies', which everyone knows and responds to and will basically live forever (in a way 'umbrella' won't), so i dunno.

r|t|c, Saturday, 21 August 2010 09:42 (fifteen years ago)

perennial personal favourites i'd also like to take a moment to rep: 'just like me', 'leavin'.

r|t|c, Saturday, 21 August 2010 09:46 (fifteen years ago)

with 'single ladies' i just tend to look at it like: ok got a pen and a pad, let's write a song for beyonce. errrm. and to come out (most likely 10 minutes later) with 'single ladies', and - crucially - to be able to say "yep there it is, that's enough, it's either iconic or bullshit" no bets hedged is some almost incalculably bravura shit.

tricky deserves half the credit though of course, but yeah the whole thing is immaculately conceived. (the label not fannying around focus-grouping first also key.)

r|t|c, Saturday, 21 August 2010 10:05 (fifteen years ago)

top ten i'm contraristanning for:

Mary J. Blige, "Just Fine"
Usher, "Trading Places"
Mariah Carey, "Obsessed"
Electrik Red, "So Good"
Jesse McCartney, "Leavin'"
Nivea ft. Lil Jon, "Okay"
Jamie Foxx ft. T.I., "Just Like Me"
Mariah Carey, "Touch My Body"
Electrik Red, "Drink in My Cup"
Rihanna, "Rockstar 101"

bottom ten i basically consider crimes against the art of songwriting:

Usher, "Moving Mountains"
Rihanna ft. Young Jeezy, "Hard"
Ciara ft. Ludacris, "High Price"
Justin Bieber ft. Ludacris, "Baby"
Britney Spears ft. Madonna, "Me Against the Music"
Yung Joc ft. Gorilla Zoe, "Coffee Shop"
Justin Bieber, "One Time"
Jennifer Lopez, "Louboutins"
Snoop Dogg, "Gangsta Luv"
Mariah Carey ft. Nicki Minaj, "Up Out My Face"

don't love or hate "Umbrella" or "Single Ladies" but they've both always just sat there for me, great as spectacles but middling as songs. btw Dream had nothing to do w/ Raheem DeVaughn's "Customer," it's a very strange and persistent wiki error

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

you like "rockstar 101"?!?!?!

i mean, i like "rockstar 101" but it's kind of shocking to me that you have any time for it.

cosign that "leavin'" is a great song; so's "just fine" but the og got overtaken in my affections by the swizz beatz remix.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:48 (fifteen years ago)

i've only really heard it in the short clip MTV's been using for VMA promos tbh but every time i see it i'm like "oh that's that song? totally not as bad as people made me think it'd be."

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:49 (fifteen years ago)

"Bed" is a total fucking favourite so this choice was kinda easy

'ray Clamence (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:50 (fifteen years ago)

of the grinding hard-attitude rawk tracks on rated r it ranks beneath "g4l" and "wait your turn" for me - "hard" isn't quite in the same vein but close enough that, knowing your hate, i assumed you'd also hate takes on "hard" but with fewer hooks and more posturing.

xp

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

My faves:

Beyonce, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)"
Mary J. Blige, "Just Fine"
Mariah Carey, "Touch My Body"
Ciara ft. Ludacris, "High Price"
Electrik Red, "So Good"
Jamie Foxx ft. T.I., "Just Like Me"

Voted for "Just Fine" cuz that's what I wanted to hear right now.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

btw Dream had nothing to do w/ Raheem DeVaughn's "Customer," it's a very strange and persistent wiki error

haha yeah i boggled at that but thought better of putting the boot into raheem yet again, luckily enough.

r|t|c, Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

i do adore 'leavin' but on reflection it's less for any partic songwriting skillz and more just for sounding like true romance updated for the 00s

r|t|c, Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

which possibly makes 'bed' terry's badlands idk ymmv

r|t|c, Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:42 (fifteen years ago)

"bed" is easily my fav. the "now stop [music stops] and let me repay you for the week that you been through" line is all sorts of wonderful.

teledyldonix, Saturday, 21 August 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

fucking hell this is a terrible list. his albums sure do make up for a lot of shit. that said BED is a total classic.

plax (ico), Saturday, 21 August 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

Mariah Carey, "Touch My Body"

album ver is pretty good but I would vote for terius remix of this in a heartbeat. (the one with rick ross.) it's amazing.

original bgm, Saturday, 21 August 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

Electrik Red - So Good. I still listen to this album like every two weeks. I keep forgetting that The Dream wrote "Umbrella," but I avoided that song as much as I could because I knew it would be everywhere when it came out.

lilsoulbrother, Saturday, 21 August 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

had no idea 'drink in my cup' was "prominent" (lol) or that ppl even put that song among the top half of that album

i mean as long as we're being generous to e red how could we neglect to mention

drink in my cup was a single tho

oh really where'd it chart

k3vin k., Sunday, 22 August 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

idk but the two elektric red trax listed both had official videos

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

tbh the options on this poll are kinda odd and arbitrary in general -- why the Snoop and Fab songs he sang hooks on but none of his other single features? -- but it doesn't really matter because it covers all the big and/or great songs people would actually vote for anyway.

richie goingham (some dude), Sunday, 22 August 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

idk i thought Ride was a massive omission.

'trading places' & 'touch my body' are prob my favorites

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

i am ok with the results/the are what they should be...def happy with "bed"'s finish tho, 4 votes is nice, def the best song on this list

max skim (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:40 (fifteen years ago)

i'm far more offended by "single ladies" garnering so many votes than "hard", which is an incredible banger, garnering any

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 07:36 (fifteen years ago)

don't understand why "so good" is considered better than "muah". guess the girls wrote the lyrics for both? 'cause "i know what i'm doing with this shit, 'cause i'm the shit with this shit" is way better than "oh, shit, damn." d'angelo is cool but jeezy is better. muah instrumental is also bigger and nicer. still prefer novelty synths to pop piano, jus sayin.

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 08:09 (fifteen years ago)

for one, people here don't consider "so good" better than "muah" Electrik Red - How To Be A Lady: Vol. 1 - P is for Poll

secondly, "so good" was a single, which is why it's in this poll

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 August 2010 08:10 (fifteen years ago)

ok

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 08:29 (fifteen years ago)

WAIT fuck that just saw poll and y'all have to be kidding. friend lover is the only unlistenable song on the album. and it's SUPER unlistenable. wtf

bed rest is good tho

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 08:31 (fifteen years ago)

one of those points is true

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 August 2010 08:37 (fifteen years ago)

actually some ppl in that thread (incl myself) make a case for not voting for 'friend lover' but calling it 'unlistenable' is insanity

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 August 2010 08:38 (fifteen years ago)

not a lot of wack lines on the album but "fill me up when i'm running low on love" is suuuuper wack

tempo is super off too. if you're gonna have a silly tempo like that you have to make the song not the most straightforward pop thing on the album. mistake

it'd be cool if it was a whole album of tracks like that. it just sticks out way too much and fucks up the whole flow of the album. i almost always skip it tbh

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 08:56 (fifteen years ago)

no

r|t|c, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 09:43 (fifteen years ago)

Poll was right; "Friend Lover" is by far the album's standout track.
