"If only more strippers voted." - the Hard Rock and Hair Metal tracks poll nominations thread (not a current poll - just random hair metal chat)

Too soon? I don't know. Some vague rules for defining what we're after here (although I'm not a professional hair metal historian so this is open for discussion):

1.) Blues-based rock and roll.
2.) Created between the mid-70s and 1993 (release date of The Spaghetti Incident, which slammed the door on the whole enterprise AFAIC).
3.) By performers wearing makeup/hairspray/spandex/leather/gypsy scarves and jewelry
4.) Probably been heard in one or more of the following: strip club/tilt-a-whirl/pool hall/Camaro.

I don't really plan on doing an albums poll.

kkvgz, Friday, 20 August 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

Redd Kross - Zira (call Out My Name)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 August 2010 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, man - do this. I'm probably not like, ILM's #1 hair metal superfan or anything.

kkvgz, Friday, 20 August 2010 12:49 (fifteen years ago)

You should do an albums poll, it will satisfy those who didn't like the results in the alltime poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 August 2010 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

I really care more about individual tracks than albums. I mean, I have zero emotional investment in listening to an entire hair metal album and can probably only remember the details of half a dozen or so from when I listened as a kid. If someone else wants to do it, that's fine though.

kkvgz, Friday, 20 August 2010 12:58 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm on board with tracks only.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 13:11 (fifteen years ago)

Kiss - Black Diamond
Whitesnake - Lovehunter
Cheap Trick - Surrender

*PROTO HAIR METAL*

Mechanical Resonance has always been the Tesla album that I stan for the hardest, but when I got to really looking at the songs, I realized The Great Radio Controversy has a lot more standouts.

Darin, Friday, 20 August 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

I always liked the 85 re-recorded version of "Needle in the Groove." They had moved past Lizzy into full hair metal production style.

My Mama's Boys jam was "Hard 'N Loud"

no zep, sabbath , deep purple or rainbow yet?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

I think people should be very conscientious about which zep, sabbath, etc. etc. tunes are nominated. They will be subject to veto if they are some shit about Satan, fairies, elves, orcs, whatever.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

Such songs should probably be limited themselves to such subject matter as "giving you every inch of my love" or "owning and operating a motor vehicle"

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

It does say "hard rock" in the thread title. They all qualify under that surely?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

^ watch this guy, he'll be nomming the Manics next

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

Black Sabbath and certain aspects of LZ got their due in the metal poll.

I can't really picture strippers dancing to Mob Rules or Achilles Last Stand.

More ideas:

Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever
Bon Jovi - Bad Medicine
Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back in Town

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

if you veto stuff for being wimpy then there wont be much hair stuff!!! ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

The following criteria will have to be met:

1.) Blues-based rock and roll.
2.) Created between the mid-70s and 1993 (release date of The Spaghetti Incident, which slammed the door on the whole enterprise AFAIC).
3.) By performers wearing makeup/hairspray/spandex/leather/gypsy scarves and jewelry
4.) Probably been heard in one or more of the following: strip club/tilt-a-whirl/pool hall/Camaro.

It seems like a real outlier. I can't listen to it now, because I'm at work, but I'll check it out.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

btw how are you weighting the votes? and what are the min & max amount of tracks everyone can vote for?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Don't know how I'm weighing the votes or the max # of tracks yet. I should probably cap the nominations at 50 songs per person, unless anyone objects?

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

hey is anything from the 1st izzy stradlin & the ju ju hounds album allowed?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 August 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

I nominated every song on Appetite somewhere upthread.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

That first Ju Ju Hounds album is really good. I don't see why it wouldn't qualify.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

Guns N' Roses - One in a Million
Guns N' Roses - Patience
Aerosmith - Dream On
Van Halen - Jump
Alice Cooper - Only Women Bleed

richie goingham (some dude), Friday, 20 August 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

I say go ahead and nominate some tracks from the juju hnds. what is it - 1994 or something? i hqavent heard it, but it probably fits the spirit.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

Feel free to veto if you want to slam shut the glam-goth door but it's not like anyone else will vote for...

Gene Loves Jezebel - Desire

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Friday, 20 August 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

GLJ is really in a gray area. Around that time, they looked really hair metal but still sounded kind of new wave-y and postmodern. Hell, I still don't know how to classify the first couple GLJ albums.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

gene loves jeZebel was totally on hard rock radio, although I had only heqard Jealous at the time.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, by the time "Jealous" came out they'd morphed into a legitimate hard rock band (oddly kind of like Drivin' N Cryin' at the same time). Go back a couple years and they were harder to define.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

I would and will vote for GLJ but it's a goth vote and not a hair metal one.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Friday, 20 August 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

'Jealous' kind of reminds me of a poppier Jane's Addiction tbh

I wonder if "Dude Looks Like a Lady" is a stripper fave. Depends on the club, I guess.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

Van Halen - Hot for Teacher
Aerosmith - Love in an Elevator
Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady)

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Friday, 20 August 2010 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

Couple of years past the 93' cutoff, but White Zombie's "More Human than Human" is (or more probably was) a big strip club song.

I'd think it fits if the judge will allow it.

earlnash, Friday, 20 August 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

It's in the spirit of the poll, definitely. Also, I love it.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

Not at all feeling that. I felt like White Zombie belonged in the actual metal poll. Weren't they nommed?

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, the "stripper" thing isn't as central to the poll as all that. I was basically taking a joke from the other thread and playing it out. People were complaining about the lack of fun metal, hair metal, so this poll's about hair metal. Rock and roll. White Zombie's awesome, but they aren't part of that thing. They're more part of the 90s hard rock alternative thing.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, I have a serious love for "More Human Than Human". It's a jam for me.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Friday, 20 August 2010 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

Good points all.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, I just checked out that Manic Street Preachers song from up above and it fits the criteria for this thread.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 10:54 (fifteen years ago)

Oh and sorry, Nick B. That particular Gene Loves Jezebel song just didn't make the cut. I watched it on youtube and they sure looked like a hair metal band, but they just didn't sound like one.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 10:56 (fifteen years ago)

Joan Jett - I Hate Myself For Loving You
Lita Ford - Kiss Me Deadly

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 11:35 (fifteen years ago)

how would you guys feel if i nominated tracks from Metallica's black album? I feel like it'd be interesting to have in here since a) "serious" metal fans generally hate it or don't consider it metal, b) it didn't make any impact on the metal poll and c) c'mon, it's pre-93 hard rock, they had long hair and toured with GNR

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)

Hmmmm... that's a tricky one, but I could see perhaps the first few singles (Sandman, Unforgiven, Matters) being nominated.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:39 (fifteen years ago)

Hard to tell, anyone else have an opinion on this?

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:40 (fifteen years ago)

It's pop metal so i don't see why not. A few pop metal fans complained that it wasn't in the big metal poll. I'm pretty damn sure it would make the strip club rule and um Kirk had an earring and wore make up during the Load period.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:43 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, I'm just gonna go for it

Metallica - Enter Sandman
Metallica - Unforgiven
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters

I love "Sad But True" and "Wherever I May Roam" and some deep cuts too but maybe those are a little too true metal? I dunno.

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:48 (fifteen years ago)

How about Faith No More - Epic?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:49 (fifteen years ago)

i think it should be here, totally. was hoping it'd be in the other poll but the less pop "Midlife Crisis" got the spot instead.

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:50 (fifteen years ago)

maybe our rule of thumb for gray area stuff is if it was a hit AND wasn't in the other poll.

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:50 (fifteen years ago)

xxp: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I mean, Henry Kvlt Pvp would disagree, but...

Faith No More? Do we open the funk-metal floodgates? Funk-metal as long as it's pop-metal, I guess.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:51 (fifteen years ago)

So like, "Been Caught Stealing" if you like, but not something of the first Mr. Bungle album.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

Billy Squier - The Stroke
Billy Squier - My Kinda Lover
Billy Squier - Emotions In Motion
Starz - Detroit Girls
Starz - Cherry Baby
Rex Smith - Do Me
Rex Smith - Ten Seconds Of Love
Rex Smith - Call Her "Easy"
Teaze - Hot To Trot
Teaze - Red Hot Ready
Ted Nugent - Wango Tango

Who's gonna host the pole dancing competition? I hear they're all the rage.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:57 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, funk-pop-metal. Was just looking at "Cherry Pie" on the list and thinking how White Trash - "Apple Pie" is my favourite crassly jerkish comparison of possibly-underage girl to baked fruit+pastry product by a band beginning with W in that brief pre-Nevermind stretch of the 90s

(ok, I was reminded of it because I always have to stop and think for a minute to remember which is which. this post is not a nomination, I guess, just a musing)

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:08 (fifteen years ago)

LOL - White Trash.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

yeah been caught stealing totally belongs. They were glam. As with the manics and redd kross, you can be glam & alt rock at the same time, but glam fans still liked them. Janes were the alt rock band glam fans, who generally hated alt rock, liked.

How about Enuff Z Nuff?
Im guessing Jellyfish is a no? (i never liked them but knew loads who did)
AOR bands I assume can qualify? I knew people who inexplicably liked Crown Of Thorns (google the singers hair!!)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

Sad for GLJ but that was probably a fair call. Maybe not sufficiently glam but...

Survivor - Eye of the Tiger
Rainbow - I Surrender

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:42 (fifteen years ago)

Sad for GLJ but that was probably a fair call. Maybe not sufficiently glam but...

If nothing else, "Jealous" certainly belongs in this poll. That track was LA glam all the way.

Sun Tea (Pillbox), Saturday, 21 August 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

Nominations for Thin Lizzy, White Zombie, and (for fuck's sake) the Manic Street Preachers almost makes me not want to participate in this thread. Clearly, some of you were jamming Mr. Mister when Bon Jovi ruled the airwaves.

Also, no mention of Trixter? Skid Row fer chrissakes?

Trixter - Give It To Me Good
Skid Row - Youth Gone Wild
Skid Row - I Remember You
Winger - Miles Away

Guns N' Roses - Don't Cry
Guns N' Roses - You Could Be Mine

sofatruck, Saturday, 21 August 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

xp: if you don't think Thin Lizzy belongs here, I just don't know.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

it's funny how just 1 or 2 bands can make people froth at the mouth at a poll with hundreds of others in it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 21 August 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

Trixter were so precious with their dirtbikes and barbecues.

Matt, you can have mine.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 22 August 2010 10:19 (fifteen years ago)

Quiet Riot - Love's a Bitch
Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon

Nate Carson, Sunday, 22 August 2010 11:15 (fifteen years ago)

See, the thing is, I prefer Thin Lizzy to pretty much every other band on this thread. What I'm saying is it's totally revisionist to put them on any list that also includes Cinderella and Ratt. If the shit wasn't on Dial MTV, wasn't from LA, and wasn't played at every redneck senior prom from 82-90, it probably doesn't belong here.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 22 August 2010 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

For proto hair-metal purposes ...

UFO - Doctor Doctor
UFO - Only You Can Rock Me
UFO - Lonely Heart

Also some pre-Slippery JBJ
Bon Jovi - Runaway

ithappens, Sunday, 22 August 2010 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

I guess I'm against the 'proto' thing here. Doesn't make a lot of sense. You could argue that Sabbath was an influence on these guys, but so was fuckin' Springsteen and Southside Johnny. Where does it end?

Anyway, has anyone nominated "Don't Close Your Eyes" by Kix?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 22 August 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

I take your point, and had originally thought of limiting the requirements to "Dial MTV, LA, etc" like you suggest, but if you exclude "proto hair-metal", do you exclude KISS, AC/DC, etc.? Those were some of the groups who weren't getting enough attention in the other poll because they didn't fit the mass definition of metal. I mean, the "If only more strippers voted" joke was in response to You Shook Me All Night Long not making it.

Now, I know there are problems because not every Thin Lizzy song could be called hair metal. Perhaps I'm a little prejudiced because my introduction to Thin Lizzy was through Bon Jovi's cover on "Stairway to Heaven, Highway to Hell." Anyone else have any thoughts?

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Sunday, 22 August 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

I learned about Thin Lizzy in the first place by reading mags like Circus and Hit Parader in the '80s, when hair metal bands would talk about them with reverence. They don't fall in the Sunset Strip category for sure, but thankfully it's a HARD ROCK and Hair Metal poll.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 August 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

I think that stripper compatibility is the deal-breaker here. Could you imagine a stripper gyrating to, say, Immigrant Song? Just about. Stairway To heaven? No. So, one counts and the other doesn't (ballads are I different matter I admit). There were plenty of bands on the previous poll who had a few songs that fitted the remit even if they weren't generally metal / hard rock bands, so the same can apply here in my opinion. Also, this :

By performers wearing makeup/hairspray/spandex/leather/gypsy scarves and jewelry

which excludes CCR, Springsteen etc but allows for Thin Lizzy, AC/DC (just) and the rest.

the same relation to machines as that which machines have to man (Matt #2), Sunday, 22 August 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

Also, Phil Mogg's nephew was in The Quireboys so UFO are in just on that.

the same relation to machines as that which machines have to man (Matt #2), Sunday, 22 August 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

gypsy scarves and jewelry

which excludes CCR, Springsteen etc

: )

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

Phil Mogg was happy to wear a white jacket with spandex trousers. That's surely a hair metal combo.
UFO were hair metal before it was defined - much more than Lizzy, because they had none of the taste for epicry that Lynott had.

ithappens, Sunday, 22 August 2010 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

Ozzy Osbourne / Lita Ford - Close My Eyes Forever

Nate Carson, Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

um, Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer?

the same relation to machines as that which machines have to man (Matt #2), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

Before chuck does it.
And it pains me to nominate celtic frost in this, but they did go full on hair metal, so wtf not.

Celtic Frost - Cherry Orchards

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 22 August 2010 22:30 (fifteen years ago)

Here's to hoping they receive zero votes.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 August 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

Just watched the video in the other thread. So terrible.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 August 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

It wont get any from Celtic Frost fans. Any votes it gets will be for the lols.

1st heard it in like 1992, saw it on Raw Power. It put me off checking their older records for a couple of years. By good luck i knew someone who had them and recorded them for me .

Dudes, there is probably no fucking way I can do this poll. I got a lot of shit going down both at work and at home - I just won't have time in the near future to keep bumping this thread and getting people's emails and tabulating results and shit. If someone else wants to take over, that's cool. If not, we at least have a pretty decent list of awesome songs. Sorry, y'all.

Yeah dudes, sorry. It's just the only time I can foresee myself ilxing in the near future is from my phone on the bus to and from work, which just isnt optimal conditions to run a poll under.

landover menace (kkvgz), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

I was looking forward to this.

Moka, Friday, 22 October 2010 07:49 (fifteen years ago)

two years pass...

Yeah, this poll looked/looks awesome. If it does fall back in the queue of ballot polls, I propose lopping off anything that charts in balls's 70s ROCK tracks - should help separate the stripper-hair-party stuff a little I think. Also, would like to add:

Def Leppard - Let's Get Rocked

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago)

Might not be a good idea if he's doing a top 666. That's a lot of disqualifications!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, but still, I mean there is no way "Dream On" for example needs to be in this poll in the first place, let alone if it's already been in the "70s hard rock and punk that balls didn't feel like deleting from the noms" poll.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

its the poll runners choice.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:32 (thirteen years ago)

i think the # of shared tracks will be relatively small and those tracks will be mostly so great that it would be silly to exclude them

some dude, Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

did strippers strip to it? I'm guessing that will be his criteria.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

Vain - No Respect

seasonal hugs (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

jeez, nevermind guys, it was just a suggestion to keep there from being two polls with really similar results. Although I guess by the time this one comes around, the balls poll will be a few years past.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

yeah by the time it has happened people will have forgotten about the 70s rock tracks poll

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:04 (thirteen years ago)

and the time will be ripe for me to re-poll REM in an open-nomination format!

Doctor Casino, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:10 (thirteen years ago)

lol @ AG being all "yup, it'll be a while since you guys will be waiting your turn in accordance with rules that clearly don't apply to me"

some dude, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:14 (thirteen years ago)

nice try

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

why should rules he or others had no input in implementing in the first place apply to him or anyone else?

balls, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:21 (thirteen years ago)

not in the strip club, guys.

how's life, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah keep the thread for what it is

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:23 (thirteen years ago)

it wasn't a "try" at anything, i know nothing i can say would ever have any effect on the Pollgerian Steamroller, but sure i'll keep it off this thread

some dude, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:23 (thirteen years ago)

i'm trying to think of any repeated behavior on ilx as pathetic as some dude's 'my heavens! a poll!' on nearly every damn poll on this board. does it ever occur to you that if you and yr dork bros hadn't spent so many years slowly killing every kind of ilm thread you do enjoy (ie 'let's sift thru what remains of dead genres like hip-hop and alt-rock') that you might get more out of the eighteen hours a day you spend on ilx? why the fuck should ag care that you hate him and his threads? and why do the mods tolerate a poster stalking and repeatedly harrassing another poster for no reason like this? good to know you'll keep it off 'this thread' though, maybe try to keep it off this board while you're at it. don't you have kids for fucks sake?

balls, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:33 (thirteen years ago)

Not really seeing the "stalking" personally, and right now balls you seem way more heated up than some dude. But I am one of the "dork bros" who loves all the alt-rock threads so YMMV may vary. I do personally think that since there DOES exist the "order and timing" thread then running other ballot polls in parallel, while not really a violation of any particular rule or principle, does seem kinda annoying, like the collective generally is on board with the "order and timing" system to avoid there being eighty polls at once. I don't mind it once in a while for a big cross-artist, "genre" type poll, personally - that's not too much for me to keep up with. But I get the idea of wanting to rein it in a little and I don't think that makes somebody "pathetic."

Doctor Casino, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:37 (thirteen years ago)

"YMMV may vary"? okay, def time to get out of the house and face the hurricane

Doctor Casino, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:37 (thirteen years ago)

how's life asked not to do this in this thread so w/e i'm good

some dude, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

casino no offense but you have no idea wtf you're talking about and this doesn't involve you. now go listen to yr hard rock (ie wings) and punk (ie tom petty).

balls, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

dude, if i didn't know you IRL i would probably find that way more offensive and uncalled-for, and/or FP, you need to chill out

Doctor Casino, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

just curious why continued harrassment of ag by some dude and others is ok but 'clutter' on ilm (defined as 'o no there are threads on ilm i'm not interested in!') is an urgent matter that must be attended to

balls, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

1) not seeing the harassment

2) issue is not clutter but:
a) consensus in the public realm of ILX as a commons
b) sense shared by some (perhaps not all!) posters that the value of ballot polls is for people who are interested in that music but don't know anything about it, therefore it is nice to be able to actually keep up with the threads to get new recommended listening (as i have for example from the hard rock spotify playlist, so that i can diversify my tastes beyond their apparently unacceptable bounds)
c) civility vs. taking something that was a sincere, i think mild procedural suggestion on my part and turning up the knob to flaming/yelling/Making It Personal, yes some dude called out AG by name but i think your response is super way out of proportion

Doctor Casino, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:46 (thirteen years ago)

consensus in the public realm of ILX as a commons - this has never existed btw beyond obv 'dealing w/ openly racist posts/posters' or 'posters hacking the coding of the board' and tbh there wasn't even a consensus in those cases

balls, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:51 (thirteen years ago)

doctor casino im afraid you're just being caught in the crossfire from fallout in a couple of other threads.I dont think you're being accused of anything.

But really dont continue it here the polls threads should be fun.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:53 (thirteen years ago)

I was gonna nominate some hanoi rocks but it appears I already did that 2 years ago!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:54 (thirteen years ago)

also i think if a poster admits openly trolling multiple threads by another poster and admits to specifically targeting that poster as some dude has done (although he's not going to do it anymore. on this thread.) and that's harrassment and the poster targeted is genteel and blameless as ag it's pathetic.

balls, Monday, 29 October 2012 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

balls can keep pissing on me if he wants but i had been pretty good about not even looking at either of your current polls much less posting on them in however many weeks since my last word on the subject so i'm not sure what we're even talking about

some dude, Monday, 29 October 2012 01:05 (thirteen years ago)

like yeah i'd have been better off not saying anything on any thread and my fault for bringing it up on here but fair enough, lesson learned

I have lots of hard-zinging responses to much of the above, but i will concede that this really isn't the thread for it, and that i may well be ignorant of a scorched-earth campaign by some dude, and balls probably does have a better handle than I do on message-board civility so ehh, let's either get back to the strippers or call it a night. wish me luck with the storms y'all, i'mma go bike up amsterdam to max caffe, if any of y'all are NYCers and would like to resolve this through thumb-wrestling

xxpost that kind of sums it up too i think!

some dude, Monday, 29 October 2012 01:09 (thirteen years ago)

Can't wait to finally vote in this poll!!

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

This poll's still a year or more out probably, but I think when I get back to it, I'm not gonna veto anything, so if anyone wants to vote for like, gene loves jezebel or manic street preachers, go for it. In the meantime, I've been catching up with some of the suggestions from upthread.

I never heard that Dirty Looks album, but I loved the one that came out before it. xp

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 July 2014 17:19 (eleven years ago)

Good to know! Will investigate. I remember seeing an ad for the screw one in some magazine when I was a kid, but I don't think it ever turned up at my Sam Goody.

Fortunately this one's on Spotify. Turn of the Screw isn't, though, so I might never hear it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 July 2014 17:29 (eleven years ago)

one year passes...

Mechanical Resonance has always been the Tesla album that I stan for the hardest, but when I got to really looking at the songs, I realized The Great Radio Controversy has a lot more standouts.

I gotta confess, this is the kind of the post that makes ILM "worth it". like I was just wondering, "who in the 2010s stans for Tesla" & I found my answer. love will find a way.

(was gonna talk about "Love Song" & its ur-Zep structure but it's more fun to think about Tesla standom, which I have like 100% respect for, rock on)
