The ILM Fan-made "BEST OF" PROJECT -- All are welcome! Pick your band, make your own Best Of or Anthology! (DON'T POST TRACK LISTS YET PLZ)

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

The way this works is simple. You pick a band you love and know the discography of very well. You create a best of album that could possibly fit on one or two CDs -- no more than two cds worth of tracks. This is about an anthology length compilation not a box set!

Firsties get dibs. The quick response gets the band. You want The Beatles or the Velvets? Better post first and call dibbs!

NO FILE SHARING.... Please post a tracklist when you are ready. OR BETTER YET -- A shared spotify playlist. I am willing to prepare one for anyone whose band and track choices are up on spotify but they personally do not have a spotify account.

You all have TWO WEEKS to devise your compilations - and you'd better come up with clever names for them.

Other rules:
1. You can have two compilations. So if you want to do a really obscure band comp and also one for a more well-known act that is ok. Or you can pick two well-known acts or two obscure ones. Its up to you! Just watch the thread and don't pick anyone else's band or artist choice.

2. Don't be lazy. Don't use the tracklist of some existing comp... use your own imagination and judgements. Its all up to you!

Does this make sense? Be sure to ask any questions you might have. And since I am starting this thing I get first choice! My two bands are:

-- Ween
-- Yo La Tengo

There you have it folks! If you think this is a stupid thing please don't bother posting. On Sept. 8, in a little over a week an a half now a new thread will be made for you all to go nuts and post your tracklists and everything. This thread is just for reserving artists you want to make comps of, please hold of posting tracklists until the new thread pops up in due time. Thank you so much.

Ready... set... GO!!!

It can be a best of, or an anthology -- an anthology can be based on different criteria, of course, and yes it can be done by "theme" or a b-sides collection or singles or whatever! Thanks for asking!

it doesn't matter if someone knows more about a band, if you love them - choose them! your quick posting proves your dedication way more than some ephemeral academic knowledge.

*Sparklehorse*. I made an anthology that is precisely one hour with 18 tracks and I spent quite awhile thinking about sequencing (I'm pretty adamant that box of stars part 1 & 2 are the perfect way to open and close the anthology). I tried to give each album it's fair due and included some lesser known tracks like The Hatchet Song (off the Chords i've known EP) and Goodnight Sweetheart which is off the In The Fishtank collaboration he did with fennesz). I've decided to call the anthology 'Muted Thunderstorms' (a lyric from possibly my all time favourite Sparklehorse song 'More Yellow Birds'), which I think is nicely evocative of the sadness and inner turmoil of these fairly quiet, mid-tempo songs.

For those curious about the lack of Linkous' more abrasive rock stuff (besides King Of Nails that is) or unquestionably great tracks like Gold Day, Cow, Maria's Little Elbows, It's A Wonderful Life and sunshine.... I truly, madly deeply love that stuff. It just didn't suit the mood of the song cycle I wanted to make. I wanted it to be both a tribute to my favourite artist and a decent introduction for a friend of mine. She has really bad insomnia and she usually listens to music until she's too tired to keep her eyes open....I made this a kind of late night listening mix for her. An hour might seem like overkill, but I tried to sequence it in a 'build up and release' style, which will keep her listening, not drowsy. I gave it a test listen myself and managed to happily sit through the whole hour without skipping. I really hope she enjoys it and would be interested in any feedback (positive or otherwise) about the tracks and sequencing etc. Thanks.

Knocked this one up quick as. Been reading a Waits biography (in itself a strange proposition). This is a mix of post-Swordfishtombones material only. It'll probably be disc 2 or a double set for Waits with the first disc focusing on the pre-Wild Years.

This series of threads was the same idea:

The Rough Guide Two...

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 26 August 2010 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder if this thread might also be the place to present my vague yet useful and heavily tested theory of five songs. It goes like this: On better albums, all songs are 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s. The more shapely the album, the clearer this sequence becomes. More leisurely albums add extra 5s at the end, or another song within the sequence, but it usually feels like the pit stop it is. Often good bands cramming lots of songs onto records, like the Beatles, had seven songs to a side, but the first five songs often still felt like 1-5, while the next two were another 4 and 5, or whatever. Maybe I like this rule because it's practically ingrained in bands I like, like the Clash, but it applies really well to organizing mixtapes. You don't need to make the whole mix right away, just start with the first sequence of five songs. Obviously the rule applies more loosely as you go. You might have three sets of five and one set of four, and as long as that last set starts with a 1 and ends with a 5, you're good.

And what are 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s? If you don't have any idea, check out those numbers on your favorite albums or mixes. Short definition is 1s feel like the beginning of something and 5s feel like the end of something. If your 2, 3, and 4 aren't somehow energizing or a "hit," you're probably placing them wrong, unless they're a digression, which can be cool too. It's not exactly scientific.

PJ Harvey

By the way -- Viceroy, are there any minimum bitrate requirements, or have years of oink and #it made me anal?

Leee, Friday, 27 August 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

Since there's no requirement to assemble audio files of any sort, there cannot be a minimum bitrate requirement. (Unless you're asking whether it's okay to choose tracks that have only been circulated in lofi formats, such as concert bootlegs???)

hearing-impaired leppard (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 27 August 2010 04:37 (fifteen years ago)

I know there's no requirement, but I've been a bit confused over whether or not it's cool to do it at all. I'd like to, if possible!

Z S, Friday, 27 August 2010 04:39 (fifteen years ago)

haha well officially there are no mp3s! But I imagine most people accept the sound quality of a high quality 192vbr track. If you think otherwise than well, do what thou wilt...

If its about sound quality in general, obviously your liner notes will hopefully indicate why a lo-fi track was used when other higher quality mixes were available. If it is a low-fi band/artist in general than obviously people have to accept that as part of the qualia of the music.

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Friday, 27 August 2010 04:40 (fifteen years ago)

A Beach Boys retrospective -- and by retrospective, I mean EVERY STUDIO ALBUM. Have done this before, just need some tweaking.

skip, Saturday, 28 August 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

Since I'm just really delving into the band, would totally love for someone to put together one for Amon Duul II.

Would love to take part, but two problems, 1) most of the bands I'd pick are either boring ones that no one on ilm would be interested in or ones that someone else could do much better and more importantly, 2) starting a new job on Monday means I won't have much time to devote to this.

I think Grooveshark works worldwide?

― Simon H., Thursday, August 26, 2010 10:42 AM (2 days ago) Bookmark

Last night, I experimented a bit w/ GS & set up rough versions of my mixes. Spotify will not let you set up an account if you are in the US. Whatever the relative appeal of Spotify, I think Grooveshark could at least be a suitable alternative for those of us stateside. It can be a bit buggy (I had some trouble with text fields adding random spaces & such), but then again it kept wanting me to update a JavaScript plugin, so that might be the source of the quirks. Overall, it is pretty efficient and easy to use & yeah u can upload & organize yr own streaming playlists (at whatever bitrate you prefer - tho I don't know how much the servers downgrade the files).

xp to ilxor - I have a stunningly good 2CD Brel best of called Infiniment which I'd recommend to anyone who's curious. Brel wrote hundreds of songs though so there are must be lots I'm missing out on.

That looks like a great starting point -- thanks for the tip!

I finished the Ride one last night and it's sounding good. Kind of regretting choosing The Beatles as my popular artist now - obv they don't do spotify, and no matter how clever I manage to be it's not like anyone's ever going to use/need my comp as an introduction to them.

Not that anyone cares, but there won't be any Starship on my Jefferson Airplane/Great Society/post-Airplane projects CD--not at 80 minutes. By post-Airplane, I meant Hot Tuna, solo Jorma Kaukonen, etc. A longer compilation, I'm sure I would include some early Jefferson Starship.

The Able Tasmans--
a clever name? how about 'shared visions of heaven are so hard to come by', i always loved that lyric...

Miles 0:39
Sweet State 2:56
Theory of Continual Disappointment 5:13
The Shape Of Dolls 3:48
Michael Fay 4:25
And We Swam The Magic Bay 2:47
The Point of No Return 2:10
School Is No Good For You 6:43
Dog Whelk 2 3:37
Wednesday (She's Coming 'round) 3:31
Fault In The Frog 3:27
Little Hearts 4:03
Angry Martyr 3:32
The Cliff 1:40
That's Why 2:52
Grey Lynn 2:41
You Too 3:53
Mayfly May 4:20
Mary Tyler Moore 4:59
I See Now Where 2:03
The Klingon National Anthem 5:18
The End of the Golden Weather 4:43

i just looked up the flying nun best of and it turns out I picked many of the same songs, ah well, but then I cheated and included songs from Humphreys&Keen since it is essentially an Able Tasmans record and like practically all of the Able Tasmans played on it. God I love this band, my favorite flying nun band. And I know, no 'what was that thing' but it doesn't really flow with the rest of the songs, 'little hearts' does much better.

Neil Young
Boards Of Canada

2 CDs for Neil, 1 for BoC.

an anthology can be based on different criteria, of course, and yes it can be done by "theme" or a b-sides collection or singles or whatever

Neil Young has 30+ albums from which to choose so I'll limit my selection to songs not on his Greatest Hits album. Doesn't mean there won't be familiar songs though, just not any from his GH.

if people stop requesting bands we can jump it up but right now this thread is set to expire on that day, and is also the day you can start posting your tracklists. Hopefully you'll have them completed, but of course people will choose bands on the last day, Spet. 7 & prob the 8th too as always happens, and in this case they just will be a little late posting their tracklists on but hopefully not by weeks or months... right?

I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
Dancing With The Moonlight Knight
Firth Of Fifth

CD 2:

I'd really love to do Robyn Hitchcock but I'm travelling most of the next couple of weeks and his massive catalog would take lots and lots of thought. Same with The Fall - heck I recently was asked to make a good overview for a friend and it was a struggle to keep it under 4 hours long!

Comes in about 1 minute too long for a single CD, but that's as much pruning as I'm willing to do.

Oops sorry, didn't clock the part about not posting tracklists yet.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

Saint Etienne (excluding singles)

Also, what is the point of this???

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

a) i don't see the point of doing a collection where most of the tracks are gonna be on one of the band's hits comps
b) they have a lot of great tracks that aren't/couldn't be singles and delve into areas they are less associated with

i hope that explains it all

god of tosh (blueski), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

in that spirit, I will try to do The Rolling Stones excluding any songs from: Hot Rocks, More Hot Rocks, or Forty Licks.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

just make it out of songs from sucking in the 70's and made in the shade.

scott seward, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

and rolled gold. and time waits for no one. and solid rock. and slow rollers. and metamorphosis.

scott seward, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

and no stone unturned. and rock 'n' rolling stones. and milestones. and gimme shelter. and stone age. and through the past darkly. and big hits (high tide and green grass).

scott seward, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

haha... they do have a ridiculous amount of hits collections. These seem to be the bestselling though... maybe the Big Hits collections too.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

Who's doing Waits? I would find that extremely hard to even narrow down to two discs.

I hope I caught everyone so far. If you can't remember what artists you snagged I feel bad for you son. I got 99 problems but my tracklists ain't 2 or even 1.

Mr. John "Manalishi" Abbott (Viceroy), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

I have a question..should we be trying to get in the ballpark length-wise of existing best-of's for our chosen artist? Mine's coming in at just under 2 hours, but I keep thinking if there is already a best of release extant that can get on one cd, I should try to make it roughly the same length.
(Also, Scott and Soto, would you consider providing me with a you-send-it file of the Same Old Scene b-side "Lover"? I don't have it, can't get it, and remember loving it but can't put it on my list until I hear it in my sequence...if not, no worries)

iago g., Tuesday, 31 August 2010 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

My Beach Boys dibs didn't make the list. Can't wait to hear Fountains of Wayne and YLT.

skip, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

For my second list I pick:

Squeeze

I can't decide whether to do a single-disc companion to Singles: 45s and Under, or succumb to my weakness and do a full-fledged double.

Hideous Lump, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 03:13 (fifteen years ago)

single-disc companion

I do this sort of thing frequently, especially when I pick up a compilation and want more, but not the artists entire catalog. Maybe I'll post some of those, too.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 03:36 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not going to be able to doThe Soft Boys so throw it back in the pool.

Oh by the way, any straglers have 1 hour to choose artists/bands... This ends at 12 o'clock Sedona Time Rift Standard Time (Arizona Standard Time Zone). So that should be 12:00 PST. Which is GMT -8:00.
Check out http://www.worldtimezone.com/ if you really want to know when this thing closes down in your area.

If you posted a claim on a band and it isn't on it, better speak up before I post the new thread in the morning.

Perhaps some mod could update the title indicating that THIS THREAD IS NOW CLOSED, at least for NEW DIBBS/BAGSIES.

Who's doing Dagmar?

― The Bartered Bride (Ówen P.)

I am, although I haven't finished yet (whoops). I believe I read on twitter you were doing a collaboration with her - can't wait!

emil.y, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 13:21 (fifteen years ago)

Go on then, I'll risk the absurd task of doing The Fall. Utter hubris of course.

GamalielRatsey, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

uh, I'll put that in bold - The Fall.

GamalielRatsey, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

It's already past the deadline! Do HMHB as well though. I'll take Six By Seven and uh lol FINE Cardiacs if we're allowed to sneak in last-minuters.

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

ugh, i didn't see that somehow, apologies. only just noticed the thread. I'll do one anyway, and whack it up on spotify.
