Durutti Column: classic or dud

I know there's a sort of thread about this but it was kinda short. So, Durutti Column: good music to chill out to [(c) God] or aural wallpaper? Is it better when Vini sings or doesn't? And why doesn't the DC song that Tony Wilson's ex-wife sings on not appear on any of the reissues?

Gods and a half (or god and a half if you prefer). I think "The Missing Boy" is one of the best memorial songs ever, and the first two albums in particular always grab my heart.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not good when they do the fucking Fields of Athenry though. Shut up and get on with the chileld out instrumental vibes please Vini.

Winkelmann, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, that was a bizarre choice of cover wasn't it? Rebellion was a weak album all round I thought. The last decent one was "Time Was Gigantic". I think that Eley Rudge's vocal tracks are great, yet I have never found any other material she has recorded. The best albums are undoubtably "Return of..." and "LC", though "Without Mercy" is worth a listen. I think that DC are too captivating to be described as aural wallpaper. Eevn though Without Mercy I and II are very long tracks, I still listen to them carefully. Nothing that DC have recorded can be described as ambient. Vini's singing is not nearly as bad as Tony Wilson makes out. A vocal delivered in a stronger style would have totally ruined "The Room".

MarkH, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, that was a bizarre choice of cover wasn't it?

I dunno, I actually rather liked it, but keep in mind that was the first time I had ever heard the song in question. Has it been covered by everyone and their mother?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Vini has a lovely voice - It might well be that I'm so used to hearing it but I think it really suits the music. There are so many of his songs that wouldn't suit a confident vocal.. "Tomorrow" for instance, which is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, I love Vini too, and I love his singing style, sort of self- effacing and unpretentious. His guitar playing (and piano, and everything else) is of course utterly godlike. I even love it when he appears on other people's records (his solo on "Genius" by Quando Quango is a fave of mine).

Favourites? Well I'm perverse so my faves are "Circuses and bread" (not least because it appeared in my life just when I needed a depressing record), "Another setting" (that Fender Rhodes!) and "Time is gigantic". And hell I even liked "Rebellion", not least for "Mello part 1", the best thing Vin's done in ages in my opinion. Sometimes it's just enough for him to sing and play solo guitar, that's enough.

And I keep meaning to take Ned to task for what he's said about "Friends in Portugal", don't believe Tony W's sleevenotes, it was a full 12 track album, y'know....

Good point about "I get along without you very well" too - rather partial to that one. And why isn't the PROPER version of "White rabbit" on the re-issues too...

Rob M, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did he do any all instrumental albums? His voice is a stumbling block for me, but I like his guitar sound.

Ned, is there a swipe at New Order in "The Missing Boy" ("same old order. . .") and why, if so? This is probably well-known, but there's a lot of post-punk lore I'm sure I don't know. I do like the line, "There was a boy. I almost knew him." (At least I think that's how it goes.) Oddly, I have only heard a live version of this on a ROIR cassette.

DeRayMi, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Obey the Time is an all-instrumental album. This was the first DC album I bought, so I was quite surprised to hear the tracks with vocals later on.

MarkH, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And I keep meaning to take Ned to task for what he's said about "Friends in Portugal", don't believe Tony W's sleevenotes, it was a full 12 track album, y'know....

D'oh. Have to do some updating...

Ned, is there a swipe at New Order in "The Missing Boy" ("same old order. . .") and why, if so?

If it is, I'd not heard it described as such.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, I just thought that was an odd phrase to use in a song about Ian Curtis (that is who it's about right?), given the existence of New Order.

DeRayMi, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would argue Dud here, though I love his story. The classic work he's done (a handful of songs: "Sketch For Summer", "Sketch For Dawn" in the early days, and what, "Love No More", "English Landscape" later?) is dragged down by the ocean of mediocre noodling he's unloaded alongside it.

Chris Ott, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that is who it's about right?

Yup. But you know me and lyrics. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A few of the albums are all instrumental. The Return Of... is all instrumental.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And he gets major good-sport points for appearing in 24 Hour Party People (well, trying to appear in it)...

Douglas, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He looked almost as worn-out as Mark E. Smith!

nabisco, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He needs a feedin'

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But he's ALWAYS looked like that. And I used to think I was thin... (that was when I WAS thin, mind).

Rob M, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But have you seen DC live? I have - once - in Edinburgh in 1999 as part of LaBradford's 2nd Festival of Drifting. They were absolutely superb. Hearing Tomorrow and the Missing Boy live was just amazing. It was just Vini, Keir Stewart and Bruce Mitchell. Bruce's drumming really did add something...reeally refuting the idea that DC = Vini. The guy was so proficient, yet looked so out of place.

MarkH, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah yes, the Durutti live experience... I caught a show in Manchester in 1994, Peter Hook on guest bass guitar for a few numbers, Vini actually forgetting the words to "Missing boy", my brother saying "This is so dull" between every song, me punching him...

Rob M, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

return of durruti column most amazing record ever,, Hannet on genius form with synths and drums, vini, soaring...

Somebody Elses Party, recent album, some great moments, but much of it ruined by some guy with laptop that produces quite a lot of it.

jim clarke, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The bonus tracks on the CD reissue of Return Of... are to die for.

Bimble (bimble), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic.

This is gonna make me sound too emo, but when I found out my granddad had died (and I was very close to him) I just put on "Prayer" and let it play on repeat for about an hour and just let the sadness take me over completely. I can't imagine anything else that would have captured sorrow and introspect of the moment any better.

My favorite album is actually Vini Reilly, but Another Setting, Return of, LC, and Without Mercy round out my top 5.

Anyone know the tracklisting of this 'Best Of' thing?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't seem to find it online..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's there, i'm listening to it now...

direct url for the real audio:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/rpms/r2_radcliffewed.rpm

(this should open in your browser. i always rightclick and select 'play in realplayer' as the controls are then easier to use)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard it, on R2.

I liked the guitar playing a lot. It reminded me of the Edge trying to sound like Jimi Hendrix. I didn't likethe backing tracks so much.

It made me think that I ought to have some of the DC's music. What do you think I would like?

the chimefox, Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

PF - I will do you a CD of the best stuff if you like.

If you were to choose a whole album I think you'd like 'The Return Of' (the debut), 'LC' (the second album), 'Without Mercy' or 'Vini Reilly'.

My fave is 'Obey The Time', but it may not be your cup of tea.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I actually prefer Another Setting.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that's my second favourite. Actually I will put some tracks from this on yr CD, PF. Some good stuff on there - Bordeaux, The Beggar, You've Heard It Before.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget Tomorrow from Circuses and Bread! It's criminal that all those CDs are so expensive.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i download some after they were mentioned on the "break up" thread (can't recall which tracks) and i have to say i was not impressed. maybe i got the wrong songs but the ones i listened to seemed, uh, too... "noodly", i guess, is the only way i can think of putting it.

dysøn (dyson), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

They're not expensive here!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I like a lot of the different styles of Vini, all of which sound uniquely Vini, but amongst the catalog there is definitely a selection of songs that are supremely good moody new wave/pop songs. See above: Bordeaux, The Beggar, Tommorow etc

They cost like 30 dollars in america.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I count myself spectacularly lucky that I got most of the mid-1990s reissues free thanks to a friend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Best Durutti Ever : 'Say What You Mean EP'. Just perfect.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Are the latest DC UK reissues still in print?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

No I think they're OOP now, but v.easy to get. You could get them in quite big chains like HMV until recently, but I think the supply has dried up. Most decent indie outlets have them or can get them - Sister Ray, Action etc. Also v.easy to get on ebay. They're usually £6.99 or £7.99 - if you really want them it might be worth ordering a few from the UK, although the exchange rate is crap for you now.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Amazon seems to have them. Actually the one I don't have is Without Mercy, which is the one you rarely see. I had it on vinyl but it was a dodgy pressing and I never got around to getting the CD. I must get this before they disappear for good.

Great DC memory from 1985 - them doing half of Without Mercy live on the Tube 'Factory Special' one Friday night. Also on were Section 25 doing 'Hilltop' (a video - not live IIRC) and the Factory All-Stars fronted by Simon Topping, Beverly McDonald, Caesar amongst others doing various songs including LWTUA. On a FRIDAY TEA-TIME! Anyone else see this?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

don't think they've ever been released in the US in any format, actually. When I was in high school I had to go to some fancy stores and pay top dollar to get original CDs, I had Valuable Passages which I paid 25 or so bucks for, which seemed like a ton of money to my 15 yr old mind. Maybe it's a job for Acute, or perhaps LTM will be on the case. LTM stuff used to be pricey here but now Darla's carrying them for 15 bucks.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Doc: if you get time to make this CD, I would appreciate it: thanks: I look forward to receiving it. !

not bad!

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I assume you're not talking about the cover.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

*looks* erk!

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks good. I wonder if the whole of Without Mercy 1 and 2 are on there or have they edited them? Unedited, they're approx 39 minutes together.

So pleased to see Contra-Indications on there. I love that track!

PF - I will try and make the compilation CD this week.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That first disc has the same tracklisting as "Valuable Passages" with "LFO/MOD" stuck on the end (wasn't on the original CD, just the vinyl version), so I guess the two "Without Mercy" tracks are the excerpts used on that compilation.

Andrew Norman, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

what a strange record cover.

I used to have valuable passages on CD but lost it, then had it on vinyl, I'll have to check but did the double vinyl have more songs? Just LFO/MOD the difference?

I hadn't heard any newer stuff untill I got limewire and was able to dl some. I was suprised how good much of it is. Esp. a song called Drinking Time.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

no spanish lament!

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't even recognise any of the titles on the second disc except for the last song. where are they from?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Otis" and "Requiem Again" are both from Vini Reilly
"Mello (Part 1)" is from Rebellion
"My Irascible Friend" and "Fado" are from Sex & Death

etc

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ah it's the songs from sex and death I didn't recognize.

really I barely know the name of any of his songs, I guess.

should I buy:

obey the time
bread and circuses
time was gigantic
dry
fidelity
rebellion

?

someone else's party was the first album I picked up since Vini Reilly and it's excellent.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had Valuable Passages on vinyl for years. Kinda wish I had it on CD instead, but I don't recall seeing it on CD, either. Dr. C might be right that the Say What You Mean/Mean What You Say EP is best.

Bimble (bimble), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i have the 2xLP of it, but i don't think it's ever been issued on CD afaik

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Otis" = absolute classic. Better combination of samples and original music than Moby could ever have dreamed of. I saw Vini walking past the office I where I work a couple of weeks ago, and also Howard Devoto a couple of days before (separately); both with hands full of Tesco bags, so I'm pretty sure he does eat occasionally.

neil tacus (tacit), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

According to this here discog : http://users.rcn.com/rpsweb/durutti-column/discog.html#releases, Valuable Passages had an excerpt from 'Piece of An Out Of Tune Grand Piano' and 'Blind Elevator Girl' on it. Otherwise, yes - CD 1 is the same as VP.

It was issued on CD.

Kyle - buy Obey The Time. Absolutely fantastic recd.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i am slowly falling in love with dc. first i had a night in new york, a cd i hardly ever listened to. then i got lc which totally smashed me. especially the 1st track, sketch for dawn i with some amazing drumming and missing boy. then i got the return which is slightly less good but still nice as the doc already said. i just ordered vini reilly.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

as said before, I had Valuable Passages on CD, paid a good deal of money for it at the time...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Valuable Passages" was my first ever CD purchase and thus has a place in my heart forever.

"Say what you mean" was also my first taste of DC, 99p in HMV sale in August 85. Played nothing else for a month once I bought it.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Now playing : The Nosebleeds - Fascist Pigs.

Vinnie on fine form.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

No "Twenty Trees"!?1?

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone here have the 4 CDR rarities collection that the mailing list put out a couple of years back? Quite the labor of love, I have a copy of it on an mp3 disc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, mail me off board with the track listing. I'm interested!

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Vini Reilly is obviously an anagram of Iggy Pop, looking at that cover.

I found Circuses and Bread in the used bin today so I jumped on it. I need to get more, now.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Some photos from the Ronnie Scott's gig are here :

Watch out for the shots of Bruce Mitchell - words fail me!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i got vini reilly yesterday. different from the others i had. lots of voice samples vini plays guitar over. and a flamenco influence. altogether it sounds pretty world-ish to my ears. i like it. less than lc but still. a grower.

the reissues on factory once/london are grate. hilarious liner notes by tony wilson, lots of excellent bonus tracks which are sometimes better than the original album tracks. nice covers and different colours for each cd inside and on the edge of the cd. they are quite expensive though. but i guess i will try to get all the others i haven't yet. next one on my list: another setting ( unfortunately obey the time seems to be sold out at the german amazon already). the few albums on vini's site are at 15 pounds. that's quite a rip-off, isn't it?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The reissues are usually around £7-9 here. Stocks of new ones are definitely starting to run out, but you can easily get them 2nd hand.

I think you'll like 'Another Setting', Alex.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone say why it is that Circuses and Bread was never rereleased?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well it was originally on FBN, rather than FAC. Also Crepuscule put out a CD of it in 1993. This probably means that it was left out when London took on the FAC catalogue.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Really! I was always wondering why that was so and now you've summed it all up for me. Thanks! (I do have a Factory copy so I am not bereft.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Mind you some of the Amigos en Portugal (on that mad Portugese label) tracks are included on the Domo Arigato reiss, also FBN-only and Crepuscule compilation tracks and singles are included on many of the early ones, so I'm not sure what the real *reason* is, other than a typical Factoryesque muddle.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Somebody Elses Party, recent album, some great moments, but much of it ruined by some guy with laptop that produces quite a lot of it.

I'm actually listening to it for the first time right now and personally I think it sounds great -- one thing I've always enjoyed about the albums over time is how Reilly does play around with other sounds and styles while still sounding essentially himself. The more 'laptop' tracks actually make for a good blending to my ears.

Now, Tempis Fugit is the new album, correct? I've heard that as well, enjoyed it well enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, haven't got these yet, must do so.

Been listening to the 'Say What You Mean' mini-LP a lot recently. I really do think that this is the best DC. The Room, Silence & E.E are absolutely monumental.

Also I was talking bollocks on my previous post - the Amigos tracks are on the reissue of Another Setting, not Domo.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 08:55 (twenty years ago)

"until the vocals started" is the story of my life with the DC

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Saturday, 21 January 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly the trick is to play them at 78.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 January 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

The newest one, "Keep Breathing," is pretty good. I've only listened once so far but liked it. A friend who has listened more says it's fantastic.

TRG (TRG), Saturday, 21 January 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Duke - that is a very easy record to end up playing at 33 by mistake. I can't count the times I've done it now. It's a ritual habit at this point.

I've felt bad for years that I still haven't got it on CD yet though I have every other Durutti Column thing I could want on CD.

Someone wrote the title of the song in calligraphy on the inside white sleeve before I'd even bought it (used). It cost me like $4 at the time. I still have it, and play it pretty often, but that inside white sleeve is really falling apart now.

Well I can't say I have EVERYTHING Durutti Column I would want on CD - I can't claim to have a real copy of the Amigos Em Portugal LP on CD because there doesn't exist such a thing. But I do have the LP. Don't love it as much as the Say What You Mean record though.

So this is all ILM's got to say about the new lp "Keep Breathing"? I've seen some 5-star reviews but curious about the lack of reaction here.

I got "Return of.." back in the day (not the sandpaper one tho), always loved it.

I got "LC" recently, wasn't that bothered.

What's best, if I like "Return" more than else?

Is 'Return of' different from LC?

Le Baaderonixx de Clignancourt (baaderonixx), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

the most recent album I've heard is "someone else's party" which I think is pretty good, with at least one track (the one that samples Jurado) being easily one of the best songs he's ever done. Is the new album different at all?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

you need to listen to LC more. "Return of" preceded LC by a year. Do you have the Factory Too reissues with the bonus tracks? Track those down for the bonus tracks. If you like your repetitive jazz licks with techno, try on Obey the Time. Pick up Sporadic Recordings double disc for more experimental/unfinished cuts. The more you hear, the more you like.

Yes I do.

Hmm. OK.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 3 March 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Me thinks Keep Breathing is rather dull. Would fit right in with 'modern' ECM (gabarek/molvaer/(gawd beware) jarrett) releases. I think it gets all those positive reviews mainly because of 2004's Tempus Fugit seemed like some kind of a departure -- whom i found to be very much appealing, and that even though it traded, by some extend, complexity in for accessability. By that terms Keep Breathing continues that path, but focusses more on the safe bet, like say, the most likely target group (which seems to be into modern ECM releases by accident). But having said that, i rarely found anything post 1983 on ECM enjoyable. Now for the question: Could Durutti Column be considered as modern jazz?

b0ring, Friday, 3 March 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

it's a bit disappointing after "someone else's party" and "tempus fugit."

Is 'Return of' different from LC?

Return Of... is completely instrumental, and is mostly guitar and drum machine, with a couple of tracks featuring live drums. It's quite short and sweet - only about half an hour (CD bonus tracks aside). I've never read an actual explanation of why Side 2 of the original LP was half the length of Side 1 - the label credits Guy Debord for inspiration, so I assumed it was some form of Situationist prank. Anyway, the CD is definitely worth owning even if only for the added bonus of "Lips That Would Kiss" and "Madeleine". There are few better arguments for bonus tracks than the re-issues of Return Of..., and, better yet, LC.

That what you wanted to know? :)

Well why not, any excuse, really.

My friend is doing a DJ night in New York at this very moment, he does a night that is totally Manchester music. It's named Resurrection after the Stone Roses tune. He is spinning records right at this very moment. It's hard to believe.

I could talk for thousands and thousands of years about bands from Manchester exclusively, it is ridiculous. If that isn't the center of the musical universe I don't know what is.

I recently heard the first two Durutti tracks ever from the Factory Sample record - Thin Ice and No Communication. I was shocked to find a male vocalist is on these, and it doesn't sound like either Vini or the guy who sings "Sleep Will Come". Does anyone know who this guy is out of curiosity? The online Factory discography didn't mention it. Another thing I don't understand is there is another Durutti Column discog online that is telling me there was actually a third track on that Factory Sample EP that the Factory discog doesn't list, entitled "Occaisional Labour In Culture". Arrgh. What gives?

So the LTM Durutti reissues are out -- four total: an expanded Lips That Would Kiss, Circuses and Bread and Fidelity, plus a 1981 live album from Brussels taken from a soundboard. The latter was the most interesting to me by default since I hadn't heard it before -- nice performance, one of the first times Bruce Russell had been part of the band and it's interesting hearing how he's testing the limits of the songs at points, more fills and other things, while Vini's singing is flatter and rougher given the mix. The interview at the end is a nice bonus as well -- plenty of complaints about the PA!

It occurs me to me how much I wish there was a full length DVD of Durutti available. I don't think there's ever been one, has there? All I've got is a the Factory VHS "A Factory Outing" that has "The Beggar" on it, and the Umbrellas Under the Sun comp.

I found some clips on You Tube and MySpaceTV but unfortunately I'm having problems with my internet and sound right now so I can't vouch for specific clips too well.

Bimble, Friday, 7 March 2008 05:36 (seventeen years ago)

Has anyone heard the Thieves Like Us song on the Kitsune Maison 4 comp? It's made more or less entirely from a sample of "Sketch for Summer" (I think, anyway; it's definitely something off the first album) and I'm not really sure what I think of it yet.

Telephone thing, Friday, 7 March 2008 06:41 (seventeen years ago)

Colin Sharpe wrote the book "Who killed Martin Hannett?" and is described as 'his best friend' on the cover. (tbf, that may not have been his idea to call himself that)

It seems he was drafted in at the last minute to replace the previously sacked singer, so may not be the guy in the early DC pics. His task was also to write lyrics for the two pieces so far written, "No Communication" and "Thin Ice" (of which Alan Erasmus added a few bits too). After the further split (Mothmen that way, Colin and Vini this way), they did a few gigs together but basically packed it. About a year after the Factory sample, if I recall right, Vini and Martin did the album.

Mark G, Friday, 7 March 2008 09:51 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, if they stripped the vocal off those tracks, they'd be fine as actual DCol tracks anyway: Thin Ice (detail) particularly.

Mark G, Friday, 7 March 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

That was a fine post, Mark! I had forgotten about the Mothmen connection. I shall have to play those two DC tracks now, I love them so much. I don't mind his vocals, either.

I had great fun last night with the Hannnett produced bonus tracks on the "LC" CD. I've long thought "Belgian Friends" was an especially exceptional song (like top 5 Vini for me), but I took a closer listen to the likes of "For Mimi" & "Self-Portrait" and wow, blew my hair back. I started seriously wondering if Mr. Hannett might have contributed to the bass lines on the latter. They seemed so much in his style of playing. Still the liner notes say Vini wrote these songs entirely, so who knows?

Rob M v2, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 08:17 (seventeen years ago)

Okay I've got the Domo Arigato on DVD now and I must say I'm not all that thrilled with it. The main problem is the trumpet and sometimes the violin are too far up in the mix. I want to hear more of Vini's keyboards & guitar. Some songs it works out okay on, though...

I mean I never had any problem with these instruments on the "Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say" EP, but there's a proper place for them in the mix and this isn't it.

"Belgian Friends" on keyboards is sweet, though. Yikes.

And the weird thing is that just before "The Missing Boy" started, I heard that riff in my head and prayed it would be the next song and it was. Sigh. I mean we've all affirmed that Vini is a genius, right? Have we established this yet?

Goose pimples on my flesh when he starts in with the "same old order" bit. What is the deal with his fingernails? Is he playing with this fingernails? The brilliance is blinding. I've definitely never heard a better version of "The Missing Boy". And yes I know it was written for Ian Curtis, you wankers.

_Rockist__Scientist_, Sunday, 23 March 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

Truth be told, I'm totally insane over "Self-Portrait" now. There is this part in that song when the guitar note/key changes entirely from anything you might expect and it kills me. Let alone the Martin Hannett's production. I decided I had to have this on vinyl. Cost me a fortune but I can't live until I have that on vinyl and can hear it on headphones. I will get to have "Belgian Friends" on vinyl too! What a thrill!

Still there are more great tracks..."Danny", "One Christmas For Your Thoughts"...

the song posted above (it's wonderful) came up as a related video on youtube as i was searching for a certain ratio tracks to compare studio to

never heard much of this band but it seems like something i would like. is there a best of or can someone prod me towards a primer?

thanks

Richard D JAMMs muthafuckas! (Karen Tregaskin), Monday, 11 January 2010 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

It's a bit of an obvious choice, but my favourite from end-to-end has always been Vini Reilly. There's masses of amazing stuff on the other albums, but that's the one I return to most. The "best of" upthread is pretty decent too as a primer.

Also, whenever this thread gets revived I feel compelled to listen to Vini's opening riff on Morrissey's "Suedehead" because it is A+++.

Bill A, Monday, 11 January 2010 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

Isn't there some doubt as to whether that's really Vini? Wasn't he fairly unimpressed by Stephen Street's compositions, and declined to play on some of that record? So it may be Street impersonating Reilly playing Street...

Michael Jones, Monday, 11 January 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

im pretty sure he played on 'suedehead' but there was definitely friction.

jive bunny and the masterilxers (history mayne), Monday, 11 January 2010 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

don't know if this is offputting or not

yes yes eyerolling challops from a newbie but i can't stand moz or smiths and everything stephen street touches is tainted but creative tension indicates differing aesthetics

thanks for the tips bill a

Richard D JAMMs muthafuckas! (Karen Tregaskin), Monday, 11 January 2010 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

I'd agree that you can't really go wrong with Vini Reilly* ; the first two Durutti records are sublime too. My introduction was the Valuable Passages Factory comp, which has some of the best bits of his "classical" record, Without Mercy too.

(* - a huge bonus for me, though not for Karen, was the acoustic Vini/Moz 7" included with it, where Vini famously plays a bum note and they dissolve into laughter)

Michael Jones, Monday, 11 January 2010 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

>Isn't there some doubt as to whether that's really Vini?

Yeah, I've read various bit and pieces about that riff's provenance (Antiques Roadshow style). To my ears, it's so like Reilly in composition, tone and style that *even if* it were Street trying to pastiche him or whatevs, then I don't care. But my money is that it's Vini, because it sticks out like a sore thumb from the jangling guitar on the rest of that song.

(and Karen, no sweat on the challops, Morrissey solo is very far from what I enjoy, although lots of love for The Smiths)

Bill A, Monday, 11 January 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

i would always vote to start with "the return of.." and "LC", the former because it's beautiful and wondrous and the latter because it's probably vini's most accessible work.

tbh i think you could pretty much dip anywhere in his catalogue, though i can't say i'm a huge fan of a lot of his 90s work. wrt newer stuff, anything he's done from "someone else's party" onwards is definitely worth checking out.

journey to the center of fat butt (electricsound), Monday, 11 January 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

I'd recommend "LC" or "Another Setting" but anywhere from "Return of" to "Vini Reilly" will do as a starting point.

Some of Vini's 90s gear is well worth a spin if you're willing to seperate the wheat from the chaff.

Radio Birdman Rally (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 00:08 (fifteen years ago)

I recently started loving Obey the Time. It's his most electronic album, I think.

Jacob Sanders, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

Totally agree about Obey The Time. It's a great album and the electronic kick drums on a couple tracks sound exactly the same as on New Order's Technique. Do you have The Together Mix tracks?

http://www.discogs.com/Vini-Reilly-The-Together-Mix/release/515832

They're on the reissue of Obey the Time too.

Did LTM reissue Obey the Time? I only have the vinyl on Benelux. Is it worth buying for the bonus tracks? I should keep up with LTM more.

afaik 'obey the time', 'time was gigantic' and 'sex & death' are out of print, but all of them are easy to find s/hand

journey to the center of fat butt (electricsound), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

actually i've just realised pretty much all their factory stuff post-C&B is only floating about in factory once/too form

Hotel Of The Lake 1990 has been one of the songs I've started many dj set with. Maybe my favorite of his.

Jacob Sanders, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

why am I the only person who thinks Another Setting is by far the best?

dan selzer, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 05:34 (fifteen years ago)

actually "time was gigantic" is pretty difficult to get secondhand... unless you want to pay a ton of cash for it. same is true for the factory CD reissue of "without mercy" and the limited CD reissues of "live at the venue london" and "amigos em portugal." however, a lot of the other factory reissues like "return of..." and "LC" can be had for bargain prices even brand new. same is true for his post-nineties stuff... all readily available.

a dozen great tracks to sample from a variety of albums, in no particular order:

1. "the missing boy" from LC - the chorus of this song breaks my heart every time
2. "conduct" from the return of... - on headphones this song can still make me walk into trees at the park at around the two minute mark
3. "street fight/royal infirmary" from bread and circuses (reissue is called circuses and bread, but is the same) - he's the best guitarist in the world maybe, but when combined with such piano, he is devastating. i love how this song only really gives you the chorus once, forcing you to relisten to the whole track
4. "the together mix" - available on the obey the time reissue, i think, originally a 12"? - 90s happy mondays-like thing, looped vocal a la tom's diner, fantastic
5. "vigil" from somebody else's party - never heard a song that better expressed how it feels when someone close to you dies, maybe my favorite song by him ever
6. "shooting" from tempus fugit - tony wilson thinks he should never sing, but i can't imagine the durutti column without vocal tracks like this one. he's a bit like new order, the lyrics are sometimes utterly childish, you can see the rhymes coming from miles away, but then he'll amaze you with it
7. "love song on quattro" from tempus fugit - he does a lot of spanish guitar sounding stuff like this these days, and i think it's great.
8. "silent nite" from the return of the sporadic recordings - eerie, lady singing, snowing probably
9. "spent time" from another setting - i don't like this album, but it's got good stuff on it, they all do
10. "never known" from LC and "never known version" from sunlight to blue... - he loves to do certain songs over and over again. "shooting" up there at #6 is another version of "longsight romance" from rebellion.

Perhaps it'd be good to start with these three albums to get a good sampling: LC, Vini Reilly, and Someone Else's Party?

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 09:01 (fifteen years ago)

I left out a lot from that list, too... I don't even own Sex and Death or Time was Gigantic. Oh yeah, probably best to avoid "Love in the Time of Recession" and "Rebellion" to begin with. Not saying they aren't good, just not a good intro.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 09:10 (fifteen years ago)

thanks for the tips good ppls

now the problem is that the list of starting point suggestions is almost as large as the back catalogue

The new '4 Men w/ Beards' reissue of LC doesn't include 'For Belgian Friends', anyone know why this is?

coolsundays, Thursday, 11 November 2010 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

It wasn't on the original release either. It was a single released on Crepescule or whatever, iirc. Maybe they didn't get the rights. What is on that reissue? Why not just get the Factory Too reissue?

Ok, Robert From Hungary, here's my stab at the lyrics. Interesting song. I can't make them all out but this is a good bit of it.

Vigil

put some sounds in the walkman
and take a walk around
and i have never heard
such an emptiness in sound

theres a screaming tight?
their rockets on stretching?
make myself a drink
take a sip start watching

even though the hurdles smoke
on an isolation trip
force myself to eat
but i know i'm getting sick

i came here like a partner
ready for a fight
drown my lovers coffee
and settle for the night

? over broken people
foretelling their own deaths
listened in the darkness
to someone fighting for her breath

compressed air is hissing
hissing in the wing
i don't believe in anything
but i'm praying for a friend

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 11 November 2010 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

put some sounds in the walkman
take a walk around
and I have never heard
such an intumescent(?) sound

nerves are screaming tight
the rack (rot?) keeps on stretching
make myself a drink
take a sip, start retching

given up the herbal smoke
on an isolation trip
force myself to eat
but I know I'm getting sick

I came in like a hard man
ready for a fight
drank my lover's(?) coffee
and settled for the night

(?) with broken people
foretelling their own deaths
listening in the darkness
to someone fighting for her breath

compressed air is hissing
pissing in the wind
I don't believe in anything
but I'm praying for a friend

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 2 December 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

Tuesday - Keep Breathing - 2006

I don't mind who you're waking with this morning
it's not the ...? sounds that i hear calling
no senselessness of waking dreams still forming
it's just the fight is over
i know you've gone

i still feel you
i can feel you
i can feel you
i still feel you

so i get up,
i get on with my day
and i'm not broken up
i don't wish
and i don't pray
and if we met
there'd be nothing there to say
it's just i wish
i'd tried to make you stay

i still feel you
i can feel you
i can feel you
i still feel you

i don't wake up
expect to see your smile
and i don't mind
you've gone so many miles
and i hope that you've kept your sense of style
i just still love you
so it's gonna take a while

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 2 December 2010 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

GREAT. And I like Another Setting even better.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 04:00 (twelve years ago)

His catalog is so frustrating - bonus tracks on some releases but not on the box set of the first four albums! And no odds and ends comp that gathers it all up. "Amigos" is way out of print and goes for stupid money. I really hope LTM's release is the start of a proper reissue campaign.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 04:14 (twelve years ago)

yes. Another Setting! thanks dan for reminding me about that record!

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 04:18 (twelve years ago)

Yeah it's a bit messy. I had most of Amigos as tacked onto the Factory CD of Another Setting, then only years later did I realize it wasn't the whole thing and there was a separate full Amigos that I downloaded from iTunes.

A lot of the bonus stuff on this LC, I think I have on vinyl. I went through a phase where I was really avoiding "record collecting" except for buying old dance 12"s but I'd go to the WFMU record fair and only buy Durutti Column vinyl.

My prized possessions are my two Factory cassetes of DC that I bought in high school at Crazy Rhythms in Montclair, NJ. Without Mercy and Another Setting. As seen here:

http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=808623

I already had the Valuable Passages CD, which I later leant to someone who lost it, though I found it on vinyl years later. But that tape of Another Setting was a regular in my car for the better part of junior and senior year of high school.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 04:32 (twelve years ago)

I was lucky enough to discover DC in 85 so a lot of their stuff was still available either in shops or mail order. I got albums like "Amigos" and "A Factory Quartet" for about three quid each, and my first CD ever was "Valuable passages", again mail order in April 87 alongside the seven inch of "I get along with you very well". And those Factory tapes - I bought "The return of", "The graveyard and the ballroom" and "Pigs and battleships" on the same day, just after Xmas 85. I moved to Sheffield in 87 so it was a short train hop to Manchester for record shopping, picking up more of those Factory tapes and other rarities. It seemed the search was part of the fun in those days - always looking in the D section of second hand shops, finding a copy of "Deux triangles" that way in a little shop in Bristol... And then the one time I saw DC live - Manchester, 94, Peter Hook guesting on bass - Vini forgot the words to "The missing boy"!

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 09:03 (twelve years ago)

Oh, I had "Valuable passages" on tape, one of only three double Factory tapes in those boxes, because it had "LFO MOD" on it which was unavailable otherwise in Britain (it was never issued on vinyl here, though I saw a US copy). Did you know "LFO MOD" is based around a preset of the same name on a Korg DW8000 synth? A friend had that synth and I was messing around on it and found that sound and spent the rest of the day trying to perfect how Vini plays it.

I've just bought myself the dbl cd of "Short stories for Pauline" for Xmas actually and will get "LC" as and when, I've got most of the stuff on it but to have it all in one place would be nice... Going back to "Short stories..." I bought "Homage a Duras" in 88 thinking "New Durutti tracks!" and finding those old ones, and Richard Jobson talking, and buying an obscure mail order tape in 90 which had "Snowflakes" and another song from "Pauline", and also introduced me to Sarah Records with a demo by The Wake and a song by The Orchids, and that was another obsession... God, "Snowflakes" is so perfect and desolate and beautiful.

And I've not even mentioned the music, which is some of my favourite music ever and it is so hard to describe why, and "LC" is train journeys over the Pennines at dusk and "Another setting" is just endlessly sublime, those long sustained feedbacking guitar notes on "Spent time" send shivers down my spine. And I'm not even going to try "All that love and maths can do", my favourite piece of music ever. Magical stuff, all the way. Sorry for rambling but I love Durutti Column so much.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 09:19 (twelve years ago)

Just reading the thread back and I ramble at the start too (and mention the 94 gig), so I've been rambling about DC for ten years on ILM.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 09:27 (twelve years ago)

Re the "Hannett" tracks:

Obviously, he produced the first album, those tracks on "A Factory Quartet" being the last he produced? Would they make sense being grouped together?

And what is missing from this list of "DC/MH" plz:
2 tracks from "A Factory Sample"
"The Return Of"
Tracks from "A Factory Quartet"

ta.

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 10:10 (twelve years ago)

There's also the two tracks on the Benelux single "Lips that would kiss" / "Madeleine" which he produced for DC.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 10:28 (twelve years ago)

Triffic.

So, all I'm missing (myself) is the Factory Quartet, and the one 'bonus' track on the 2nd pressing of the "Return" LP.

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 10:32 (twelve years ago)

Ha, I was about to reply regarding the bonus track on "The return of..." too. Going to check which version(s) I've got now.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 10:34 (twelve years ago)

Don't apologise, Rob M - I love reading people ramble about Durutti Column!

This is the version of LC that I've got:

http://www.discogs.com/Durutti-Column-LC/release/130191

Around 8 CDs were reissued on Factory Once with bonus tracks but are now out of print. I need to work out if all the bonus material on the forthcoming 2cd set has already been released on the Factory Once versions.

Away to stick LC on the stereo now.

I am using your worlds, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 10:53 (twelve years ago)

DC had the best coloured Factory hessian cassette boxes.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:00 (twelve years ago)

Only just looked closely at the track listing of the new LC reissue, it seems very comprehensive of tracks from that era, so it's got the demos which were on the "Four Factory Records" 6 cd set, plus hard to track down things like "Party" and "The eye and the hand" from Crepescule comps, and all the EPs of that era like "Deux triangles". Has it got "Weakness and fever" on it? Yes, looks very very good, because some of those tracks are very hard to get these days. Nice. I've bought "LC" on vinyl, then the boxed cassette, then as part of the FACD224 4 cd set, then the Factory Once issue you have, then that 6 cd set then this new issue next year... God, six times then?

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:05 (twelve years ago)

Ah, if you have that FACD224 4CD box set, you have the 'bonus' "Return" track, apparently it's the only CD that has it.

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:07 (twelve years ago)

This is a bit of a weird admission, but I still dream from time to time about the Factory boxed cassettes - that I'm in a record shop and there's a whole load of them, in the right colours for the artists and the right fonts and everything. Haven't had that dream for a while, but it happens every year or so.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:11 (twelve years ago)

Are they for albums you do not own, or ones that don't even exist?

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:12 (twelve years ago)

I love those boxes. I need the Quando Quango, Wim Mertens and the ACR ones. They are probably directly to blame for me developing a collector mentality as a teenager.

Yes Mark I have that bonus song it's also on one of the extra discs on the 6 cd set of the first four albums. Totally freaked me out the first time I played the cd, was expecting the quiet guitar piece I knew from my tape and then the drums and bass crash in. Of course in those pre internet days I just thought it was a mistake.

Yes, the dreams are about tapes that don't exist. I sold a lot of my tapes on ebay years ago, only have the DC and Quando and Railway Children ones left now, sold my Wim Mertens one for £190!

On a side point, why is the written track listing for "Another setting" in the wrong order on both the FACD 224 set and the Factory Once reissue? Anyone know?

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:44 (twelve years ago)

I loved those cassette boxes, along with the artwork it was a big part of what made gathering JD/NO releases very special.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 11:45 (twelve years ago)

The only time I saw something similar to the Factory boxes was a Heaven 17 boxed tape of their remixes which was around the same time, 86 or 87, will have to google it - so someone somewhere at Virgin saw the Fac boxes and thought "Great idea, let's try it too!"

djh, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)

I'd pay a large fee to see him live. Wish he'd take the Leonard Cohen route and tour for money.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

I think his health is a big issue at the moment - much as I'd love to see him tour regularly I can't see it happening. I'm a member of the DC group on Facebook and he's really struggling for money at the moment, selling headphones and other things - sad that he has to do that sort of thing, he has got good support around him but it makes you wonder how much Tony Wilson protected him from the real world over the years. This is my own assumption and not based on any knowledge.

On a lighter note, those postcards look great. And the reissue of "Short stories for Pauline" is essential stuff. Yes, I've got it al elsewhere but it's great to have it in one place.

Rob M Revisited, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 20:47 (twelve years ago)

you'd think maybe Morrissey would throw him a few quid.

piscesx, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)

^ That crossed my mind.

I guess the request seemed a) sad (on many levels) and b) unlikely to resolve anything.

To be fair, don't know any of his personal circumstances.

djh, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)

The request is genuine and will resolve the matter of him not getting evicted from his house while recovering from a stroke hopefully. Whether VR knows this request is being made on his behalf, is another matter however.

I can't do links on here sorry, but there's a new twitlonger post relating to the donations for Vini which is actually quite heartening to read and very informative regarding his current situation and health. Could someone post it if possible, because it's worth knowing. Thank you.

Rob M Revisited, Thursday, 3 January 2013 22:44 (twelve years ago)

The Twitlonger post from a couple of days ago

I've had it stood up by several sources in Manchester that his nephew is who he says he is and members of his current band have confirmed that he is in very bad shape at the moment unfortunately.

this story getting weirder and weirder.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-20931235

Influential guitarist Vini Reilly of the band The Durutti Column has spoken of his "embarrassment and humiliation" after fans sent £3,000 to help him pay his rent after he had three strokes.

Talcum Mucker, Monday, 7 January 2013 20:32 (twelve years ago)

Not so weird, really... I know plenty of folks who would rather die than accept money from friends, let alone strangers.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 7 January 2013 20:41 (twelve years ago)

Fair play to him.

djh, Monday, 7 January 2013 20:45 (twelve years ago)

but his nephew has just posted on the DC facebook page that both he and Vini are upset at being misrepresented in the article, and posting a statement purported to be from Vini saying thanks for the donation...

Talcum Mucker, Monday, 7 January 2013 20:47 (twelve years ago)

Looks like Vini misspoke during the interview, and said humiliated when he meant humbled... in any event, he's accepted the donations and paid off his debts with them, so that's good. The fact that he's living on disability benefits is less good.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 10 January 2013 17:09 (twelve years ago)

Since I complained about their scattershot catalog, I figured I'd go ahead and come up with a non-lp comp, presented herewith, in order of release, excluding live tracks:

Durutti Column Odds and Ends, 1978-1986:

No Communication - A Factory Sample
Thin Ice (Detail) - A Factory Sample
Lips that Would Kiss - single A-side
Madeleine - single B-side
Sleep Will Come - From Brussels With Love
Piece For An Ideal - From Brussels With Love
Weakness & Fever - From Brussels With Love
For Mimi - A Factory Quartet

Self-Portrait - A Factory Quartet
Enigma – single A-side
Danny – single B-side
The Eye And The Hand - The Fruit Of The Original Sin

One Christmas For Your Thoughts - Ghosts Of Christmas Past
Snowflakes - Ghosts Of Christmas Past
For Patti - single A-side
Favourite Painting - Deux Triangles EP
Zinni - Deux Triangles EP
Piece for Out of Tune Grande (sic) Piano - Deux Triangles EP
I Get Along Without You Very Well - single A-side
Love Fading - single A-side
For Noriko - single B-side
Goodbye - Say What You Mean EP
The Room - Say What You Mean EP
A Little Mercy - Say What You Mean EP
Silence - Say What You Mean EP
E.E. - Say What You Mean EP
Hello - Say What You Mean EP
The Sea Wall - Un Hommage A Margueritte Duras

All That Love and maths Can Do - single B-side
Florence Sunset – Greetings EP
San Giovanni Dawn – Greetings EP

That's everything up through "Valuable Passages", the period I'm most interested in at the moment. It turns out the upcoming 2CD reissue of "LC" gathers up about half of this and the rest is available on CD aside from the first two tracks and the "Love Fading" single.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 12 January 2013 01:35 (twelve years ago)

Will be my 4th copy of LC, but fuck it. Need to have it.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 12 January 2013 03:33 (twelve years ago)

I've always assumed that "Love fading" and "A silence" (issued as an extra track on the "Circuses and bread" reissue on LTM and on their "Short stories for Pauline" from last year) were the same song - Vini recycling his lyrics again. I could be wrong though,

Rob M Revisited, Saturday, 12 January 2013 07:00 (twelve years ago)

wow, thanks for that list, Gerald.

brimstead, Saturday, 12 January 2013 07:53 (twelve years ago)

Nice, was gonna hunt down th Factory Quartet double for those tracks.

Is "I get along without you" on CD then?

Mark G, Saturday, 12 January 2013 10:32 (twelve years ago)

yes

trayce war (electricsound), Saturday, 12 January 2013 10:38 (twelve years ago)

It's on the "Circuses and bread" LTM reissue. Another track from this era - 86 - is "The aftermath", which was on a compilation supporting animals (can't remember the full details) and is absolutely stunning.

Rob M Revisited, Saturday, 12 January 2013 12:30 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, "The Aftermath" falls between "Valuable Passages" and "Red Shoes" (which contains the Greetings EP) and thus is just out of my range. That'll start of the next odds and ends volume I compile!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 12 January 2013 13:53 (twelve years ago)

An interesting interview from earlier this year which sheds some light on how Vini is now.

http://www.m-magazine.co.uk/interviews/interview-vini-reilly/

Rob M Revisited, Saturday, 9 February 2013 19:18 (twelve years ago)

Wonder why they felt the need to have LC come out on both LTM and 1972 at the exact same time. It was hard to tell on the digipac of the 1972 release if there were any bonus tracks on it. I don't even know of the remasters are the same across both labels or if they are the same ones that were on the Four Factory Records box set. Kind of a mess.

svend, Thursday, 21 February 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago)

probably cause 1972 is a boot label

flaccid archives (electricsound), Thursday, 21 February 2013 21:40 (twelve years ago)

Get the LTM 2cd edition, support one of the best labels around and get tons of extras.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 21 February 2013 21:53 (twelve years ago)

Seconded, it's a lovely album and the extras are fab. Even the demos that appeared on the "Four Factory Albums" set sound better on the LTM issue. I've been playing little else all week.

Rob M Revisited, Thursday, 21 February 2013 22:21 (twelve years ago)

I asked James from LTM if they had other DC reissues lined up but he was coy about it. I really hope "Another Setting" gets similar treatment!

Vini Reilly in-conversation with Dave Haslam at Manchester Town Hall on Sunday, March 3rd 2013, an event for CALM, a charity that reaches out to suicidal young men. This is an honest, and - especially from about 15/20 minutes in - a harrowing account of Vini's own problems with depression. He was determined to tell his story, uninterrupted, and discussed and agreed some of the content with Dave Haslam prior to taking the stage (and the interview is uploaded here with Vini's permission). The finale to the night was a performance of a song (one never recorded or released); his first public performance for nearly two years. But as Vini says "it's not about me". Please be aware this is not an easy listen; anyone who wants to know more, or has concerns about issues of suicide and depression please check out; www.thecalmzone.net where there's help available and also an opportunity to donate to help them with their work..

I really enjoyed that. Part of what I liked was reading your recollections of hunting down each individual release and what they meant to you personally. My memory is so bad I've forgotten a lot of moments like these, or can only half remember them, but reading this helped me remember, in a way. Cheers.

Culture Cub (I am using your worlds), Saturday, 11 May 2013 21:37 (twelve years ago)

Maybe it’s a teenage thing, everything seems more heightened then, your senses more attuned. But these days.. It’s just too easy. A few years ago I downloaded the entire career of a band I was interested in, and it took half an hour, and I still don’t think I’ve heard it all yet. I don’t feel the music is ‘mine’, I haven’t invested the time in it and the ease of getting the music has devalued it in my mind. I still prefer physical music – CDs – to anything else. I like the ‘artefact’ I suppose. I can still devote myself to new (and old, or new to me) music but the life of a mid forties family man with commitments doesn’t give so much chance to do that.

Worth repeating here. Thanks for the article.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 01:32 (eleven years ago)

Fantastic, heart-tugging interview — though I have to admit I winced a bit when I saw this topic upped, thinking it was because Vini had passed.

Can't wait for that Chronicle album to get released.

I love Vini Reilly

Also I'm happy about the weird Viva Hate royalty dispute being settled once and for all

DDD, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 10:27 (eleven years ago)

I must admit I came away from that interview with a vague feeling of ... I dunno ... it felt weird to hear him underplaying what he brought to Viva Hate.

djh, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 17:53 (eleven years ago)

He's right that Late Night Maudlin Street is the highlight though. It has the most 'Durutti' guitar sound of any of the tracks.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

Not weird for me, seems more like this "humble genius" thing where highly skilled people underestimate their talents. Also having a stroke and reflecting your life/artistic legacy could have changed his self-assessment.

DDD, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 18:39 (eleven years ago)

reflecting on*

DDD, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 18:39 (eleven years ago)

Do you guys know about the extra/missing track on some versions of "Return" ?

Mark G, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 18:43 (eleven years ago)

I had trouble following a lot of that Soundcloud interview, even at full volume.
When he was saying "dont laugh at me", I wasnt sure if he meant someone in the audience or if it was about him feeling belittled by some people in general or something else.
Also wondering if him talking about seeing an old lady getting beaten up is about something he saw happen or comparing that to the situation of some depressed people.
I kept rewinding it and still couldnt really hear.

In that other interview he said that he doesnt get royalties from his albums. Did he mean that he actually doesnt at all or that they dont sell well enough for him to get much?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 18:44 (eleven years ago)

DDD ... I think what I meant was that the guitar on much of "Viva Hate" is undeniably Vini-esque ... and so it feels uncomfortable to read him crediting Street with the skills and dismissing his own previous claims as "displaced anger", when perhaps he was absolutely justified in feeling un(der)credited ... whilst not feeling surprised to read him denying he's anything special. Can understand why he would want peace with others, at this point though.

djh, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 18:52 (eleven years ago)

He said he'd not "Sold anything" for 4 years, so I guess it's that.

I daresay he'll get a good amount from the new "Return of" reissue

Mark G, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 18:55 (eleven years ago)

I'd hope so...but I don't know how much profit something like is going to make.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 18:57 (eleven years ago)

I was actually disappointed (truly disappointed) that the guitar wasn't more distinctively identifiable as Vini. Seems like he compromised his sound for the album. Where are you hearing Vini-esque playing?

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 19:00 (eleven years ago)

If I didn't know it was Vini Reilly, I wouldn't have guessed it was him on any of the tracks.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 19:11 (eleven years ago)

djh, now I understand what you mean. Regarding that VH dispute: AFAIK Street composed some demos and, after getting a "Yes" from Morrissey he got Reilly to play guitar on the studio tracks. He wasn't impressed with them though (dismissing them as three-chord crap) and fleshed them out, which for him was considered composing the tracks.

There's this interesting documentary from the (early?) 00s with literally every Morrissey solo album producer, T. Wilson and V. Reilly talking about his career. Viva Hate is discussed right after 5 minutes - Reilly and Street give their side of the story, this weird "session musician/composer" discrepancy that lead to this conflict.

DDD, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 19:14 (eleven years ago)

Relistening now to find clear examples. There's a bit in the background on Little Man, What Now.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 19:16 (eleven years ago)

DDD, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 19:18 (eleven years ago)

Bengali actually has some distinctive Vini-esque playing too.

DDD, Friday, 31 January 2014 14:52 (eleven years ago)

The very end of "Margaret" has some distinctive Vini playing, but I agree that most of the album it's hard to tell it's him.

Vinnie, Friday, 31 January 2014 15:17 (eleven years ago)

To be fair Viva Hate is technically not a Durutti Column album

Can never choose between Another Setting, LC or Circuses and Bread.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 January 2014 16:29 (eleven years ago)

I think anyone that's heard the Vini Reilly album from 1989 (and the outtakes on the recent Kooky reissue) can clearly hear that it's Vini on Viva Hate.

Some comparisons:

The "noisier" tone on 'People's Pleasure Park' and the same tone on 'Alsatian Cousin'
The floaty playing on 'William B' and the same thing on 'Late Night Maudlin Street'
The rhythm tone on 'Red Square' and the same tone on 'Everyday is Like Sunday' and 'Break up the Family'
The nylon finger picking on 'They Work Every Day' and the same on 'Margaret on the Guillotine'

Just for a few examples.

Austin, Friday, 31 January 2014 16:48 (eleven years ago)

I love LC and Circuses and Bread, but for me Another Setting is miles above all. I think it has the most sorta post-punky/joy divisiony moody pop songs, with a bunch of perfect little instrumentals rounding it out. Songs like Missing Boy or Tomorrow may be better than all the songs on Another Setting, but as a complete album, Another Setting is it for me.

dan selzer, Friday, 31 January 2014 17:42 (eleven years ago)

Factory Benelux presents a deluxe 3xCD box set edition of Obey the Time, the eighth studio album by Manchester ensemble The Durutti Column. Originally released by Factory Records in December 1990, the original 10 tracks have now been expanded to no less than 43.

Marking a further break with tradition, dance exploration Contra-Indications was taped with New Order programmer (and later co-manager) Andy Robinson. Disc 3 features 11 live tracks from a previously unreleased performance at Manchester University Whitworth Hall on 23 June 1990 (opportunistically billed as ‘The Acid Guitar’), on which Reilly and Mitchell are joined by guests Andy Connell, Liu Sola and Rob Gray.

Vini's guitar being used well.

djh, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:45 (six years ago)

saw this revive and simultaneously experienced two very different and extreme emotions:

VINI DIED.

VINI'S BACK.

both with this facial expression: O_O

glad i was wrong.

oh, he is literally using one of Vini Reilly's guitars!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 22:55 (six years ago)

x-post.

Yes, I have previously proposed a ban on this thread just because I always jump to the first of these.

Haven't actually heard the story of the guitar and wonder if it is mundane as "Vini sold his guitar"? Still, I have time for Cherer.

Might move this conversation to the Second Language thread - less traumatic for those watching.

hope they keep up this super-deluxe reissue series! there's just sex and death, fidelity, and time was gigantic left from the pre-2000 era...

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 17:08 (six years ago)

hot take but time was gigantic is his best work.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Thursday, 18 April 2019 19:28 (six years ago)

only one I haven't really heard (it's available digitally now but I kinda want to wait for the reissue)... I know Vigil from Someone Else's Party is a reworked version of For Rachel and I love that song so

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 18 April 2019 20:00 (six years ago)

pretty much every song on the album was repurposed at some point or another. i had a theory some years back that it was the album he had been trying to make all throughout the 90s. it came out so well that he just continued to borrow from its ideas for the next decade or so.

Vini's birthday today, apparently.

Dave Haslam just posted this on Twitter:

"I know a number of people worry about Vini's health. I just popped round to his house with a birthday card and we had a brief conversation. He's looking good and doing Ok and we made plans for a proper catch-up soon."

djh, Tuesday, 4 August 2020 17:32 (five years ago)

today is indeed his birthday! nice update, thank you for sharing.

I saw in the liner notes on the new Idiot Savants LP pressing, that Someone Else's Party is next up for the vinyl press. Gotta get them all!

also that link doesn't work for me.

(that's video from September 2020... he looks good!)

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Thursday, 15 October 2020 21:05 (four years ago)

Oh, sorry - hadn't realised the link hadn't worked.

Was just pleased to see Vini holding a guitar (I guess I'd felt a horror that maybe he couldn't?)

Apparently there's a new single but, I think, an old track and an unreleased track??

djh, Thursday, 15 October 2020 21:57 (four years ago)

The same user has also uploaded another, longer video where vini's playing is a little less atonal. I only have the crappy mobile link thing for it though:

Absolutely brilliant clips!

I, too, fear the worst news whenever Andy sees this topic revived. But he is still here. It brings tears to my eyes to see him play, truly. He has had so many important things to say and the fact that the ability to use his musical voice was all but taken away form him is one of the least fair occurrences that I can remember. There is a lot of dust on the headstock of that Stratocaster in the clip that Nick posted. This is so discouraging. Vini is so brave though, for allowing himself to have video taken when his chops are not what they used to be. It is still the beautiful music that only he is capable of making.

Very bittersweet to see, but I am very glad that I was able to see them all the same. Thank you for posting, dj.

every single bedroom pop album from the past decade sounds at least a little bit like durutti

The original 3600 LP sleeves were made of coarse sandpaper (similar to the Situationist book Mémoires), designed to scratch LPs which were placed on either side of it.

Didn't people alphabetize their records back in 1980, or was Vini assuming he'd never put out another album?

can confirm. source: my own music. it happens even when i'm not trying.

also enoch, not to be a total downer, but there is a possibility of that being the case because of vin's world view at that time. still a funny gag, especially if he was planning on making another record.

Yeah that’s a wonderful read. But I’m ashamed to admit I thought he died some years ago.

poor guy, but he sounds to be dealing with the situation about as best as could be hoped for. glad he's housed and seems to have some people who care about him.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Friday, 21 July 2023 22:26 (two years ago)

I was shocked to hear a Durutti Column song on THE BEAR a few weeks ago. I remember that he asked fans for financial help some years back when he was on the verge of becoming unhoused

beamish13, Saturday, 22 July 2023 00:14 (two years ago)

That scene in The Bear was so perfect too, hope he gets/got a good wedge for that.

MaresNest, Saturday, 22 July 2023 10:00 (two years ago)

According to Spotify he has 340,000 monthly listeners. Hopefully that’s enough to give him financial security.

But, yeah a poignant read. That line about gusts of wind blowing his words away is so vivid. Never knew about his early life on the streets or suicide attempts.

Dan Worsley, Saturday, 22 July 2023 11:07 (two years ago)

Always wondered what he got paid for having his music in "Jerry Maguire." That was a pretty major film, Tom Cruise for pete's sake.

henry s, Saturday, 22 July 2023 12:50 (two years ago)

Pretty shocking tbh. Amazed he survived, never mind made music, never mind that it was so wonderful xp

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 22 July 2023 12:52 (two years ago)

He should write a book. His instagram posts are great. Very political and very strongly worded. Doesn’t seem to have lost any energy on that front. And if this interview is any sign he has a lot to say.

dan selzer, Saturday, 22 July 2023 14:03 (two years ago)
