Franz Ferdinand winning this in 2004 reads like the last gasp of print magazine critics actually attempting to run the discourse instead of just basing their entire coverage on Larry Fitzmaurice writeups

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

franz ferdinand, for first introducing the "angular" guitar sound into rock music

markers, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 04:45 (fifteen years ago)

i guess determining the WORST would be harder considering what a fucking lolbarrassment "Franz Ferdinand" was from jump vs. the smdh cornball tourist trap of "Empire State Of Mind" luring in midwest weiners

dyao cruz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 04:46 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it's probably "get ur freak on", but i love every song here, even the franz ferdinand, even "empire state of mind"

a dystopian society awaits if we continue on this path. (contenderizer), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 04:47 (fifteen years ago)

...

(Ms. Jackson btw)

larry_fitzmaurice, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

Agree that Missy is tops here, but I'm voting for "Work It," which won't top "Freak" but deserves at least a few votes.

Fantastic songs, all:

OutKast - Ms. Jackson (2000)
Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On (2001)
Missy Elliott - Work It (2002)

So-so:

OutKast - Hey Ya (2003)
Kanye West - Gold Digger (2005)
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy (2006)
M.I.A. - Paper Planes (2008)

Yaaaaawn:

Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out (2004)
Amy Winehouse - Rehab (2007)
Jay-Z - Empire State Of Mind (2009)

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

lol at "Hey Ya" being a "so so song" to ilxor

dyao cruz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:10 (fifteen years ago)

Why's that?

I mean it's enjoyable, but I wouldn't place it in an Outkast POX.

Maybe a '00s Fun Summer Songs POX?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

I apparently didn't even look at the 2009 P&J results, because I had no idea "Empire State of Mind" won.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:19 (fifteen years ago)

Love: "Get Ur Freak On," "Work It," "Hey Ya", "Gold Digger"

Neutral+: "Ms. Jackson," "Paper Planes"
Neutral-: "Empire State of Mind"

Bleah: "Take Me Out," "Crazy," "Rehab"

"Work It" is an easy vote for me.

clemenza, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:21 (fifteen years ago)

i like 'freak' 'work it' 'rehab' 'hey ya' 'ms jackson' the most i guess

eff the rest

only song here that isn't at least an 8/10 classic jam is esom

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 06:34 (fifteen years ago)

i have no idea what's gonna win this year, don't think it's gonna be "fuck you" altho i agree that it's a top 10 lock

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 06:35 (fifteen years ago)

i'm really gonna pitch hard for critics to vote for actual fucking singles just so it's not like EVERY SINGLE AWESOME SONG ON THIS ALBUM BY "GIRLS" YAY again

dyao cruz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:00 (fifteen years ago)

yeah unless a song blows me the fuck away, i try to keep songs from my albums ballot of my singles list

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:01 (fifteen years ago)

i try to keep myself away from the pazz and jop list

max, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:03 (fifteen years ago)

also it might be a bit of a double standard of sorts but if a song is huge on the radio then i feel okay about incl it on my singles ballot along with an album -- putting an xx "single" as #1 & having their album on the list too just strikes me as lazy

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:03 (fifteen years ago)

but not the pazz and jop threads xp

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:03 (fifteen years ago)

what song is huge on radio without being a single anymore?

dyao cruz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:04 (fifteen years ago)

i mean a single

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:09 (fifteen years ago)

amazing songs that i'm fine with winning: get ur freak on, work it, gold digger, rehab
ok songs but smh @ these winning: ms jackson, paper planes
just smh: hey ya
anyone who voted for these needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror and then kill themselves or at least retire from any role in music criticism: take me out, crazy, empire state of mind

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:40 (fifteen years ago)

voting "work it", which i always marginally preferred to "get ur freak on" (and which i think has held up better, nearly a decade (gah) on)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:41 (fifteen years ago)

I don't really care about any of these, maybe I'll vote Take Me Out just to annoy Lex and 50% of ILM.

*sets trend* (deej), Sunday, 12 September 2010 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

i remember lex & xhuxk complaining abt the tendency in the 2009 poll

zvookster, Sunday, 12 September 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

"Lazy indie voters turning a fun exercise into a dutiful one by listing random "singles" off albums they also voted for are the new version of lazy AOR voters who used to vote for perfunctory tracks off albums they also voted for. Only the genre and technology have changed, and the fact that the AOR squares—back before our newfangled, allegedly singles-oriented, iTunes-through-shitty-speakers era began—almost always got marginalized by radio-imbibing pop and dance and hip-hop fans."

one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but specifically re: Girls i dont think that actually happened

*sets trend* (deej), Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

no because rock critics defaulting to a jay-z single is about as lazy

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

lust for life was a single iirc??

*sets trend* (deej), Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

wow, thank god you revived this week old thread to point out that whiney's obvious stand in band for 'indie band x' did not actually have every song on the album on the singles list

a public service really

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

well were you genuinely questioning if every single girls track made the list or are you just getting pretend mad (a week late) because you like that band xp

lcd
national
monae
big boi
arcade fire
sleigh bells

all of that sound about right, except the Monae & Sleigh Bells might be more in the 11-20 range

markers, Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

also in the mix

vampire weekend
joanna newsom
gorillaz
the-dream
badu
hot chip
beach house

i have no idea what the second highest rap album will be tho

drake?

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

deej, I def thought the last one was higher up but like two Girls songs charted in the upper reaches and then another one was at like #264. There's also like a bzaillion Animal Collective songs splattered all over the results

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

are people still riding for that lcd album? as someone who liked the first two joints a lot that shit is a snooze

one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

i think the-dream album is generally well-liked and i could see him carrying over momentum from last year into placing in the 8-10 range this year because it seems like a year with only a few 'huge' albums critically

...but we r discussing whether or not yela = 'super hyped one that somehow crosses over' -- if he isnt i dont think its bcuz its a mixtape vs album since i doubt generic rock critic is buying rick ross cds either

i dont think ross will be top 50

*sets trend* (deej), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

deej the distribution model may not matter for critics, who mostly don't ~buy~ music anyway, but an official release and attendant promo campaign is absolutely essential for bringing an album to most critics' attention, whether due to a pr sending them a copy of the album or a pr emailing them to let them know about yelawolf live dates or a pr hassling them about why he needs to be covered or just, you know, general conversation - like, all of that means i'm aware that eg sleigh bells exist and have released an album, whereas i probably have no idea what unofficial indie-leaning mixtapes exist out there

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

generic rock critic is almost certainly not buying rick ross cds but most critics with generalist pretensions are definitely aware that a new rick ross album exists, and maybe that it's a big deal commercially, and when it comes to catching up on albums outside their purview for EOY stuff, that means they are much more likely to actually check out the ross album than the yelawolf mixtape

The only big name rap album I've heard this year is the Ross album, which I like but isn't as good as Deeper Than Rap so it's not exactly gonna seize Iron Maiden's spot in my Top Ten.

As far as the songs at the top of this thread, I'd vote for "Gold Digger" with "Take Me Out" a close second. Hearing any one of those songs right now would bore or annoy me, and in either case cause me to change the channel or the radio station or whatever, but those two are the least offensive/tiresome.

And I don't much like Yelawolf.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

whiney otm, no one is saying yelawolf is obscure or some random datpiff pick, but i doubt any critic who follows rap casually or less knows that mixtape exists, and if the name yelawolf rings bells it's as "that dude on the big boi album"

i would bet money that 90% of my guardian colleagues have not heard his mixtape and, country difference notwithstanding, i'm guessing most mainstream US critics have the same sort of mindset

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

markers, Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

no, rev was otm with that. an official album might be overlooked and slip under the radar but it'll have PRs and labels working an actual promo campaign, pushing to get critics' and editors' attention. that is not the case with mixtapes, which need to have built up a serious head of steam and a really obvious back story before they even get noticed (how did da drought 3 do on p&j?)

Yelawolf is a guy whose name I've been hearing for a few weeks now, always spoken/typed by a small clutch of folks whose self-appointed purpose in life is to know the month's buzzworthy rapper and insist that he (it's always he) is the most important thing to happen to "the game" since...I don't know. I don't give a shit. I'm not gonna listen to Gucci Mane, I'm not gonna listen to Lil B, it took me a year or so to download Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III (I think that was the one—it was a two-CD "mixtape") after everyone started blogging (and even writing articles in print publications, for money) that it was the greatest hip-hop event of the decade. I know these names because the websites I visit make these names unavoidable. I don't care, but I know, just like I know the names of all three Kardashian sisters.

Drastic times require what? Drastic measures! Who said that? T (President Keyes), Monday, 13 September 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

Perhaps I should clarify some things which have been misunderstood.

I listen to plenty of new music. Visit the Rolling Metal thread or the Rolling Afro-Latin thread (though I haven't been posting there much lately) sometime.

I don't pay much attention to hip-hop, but I don't have any kind of fundamental dislike of hip-hop. I've been listening to it for over 25 years at this point. It's just that what I hear doesn't induce me to pay much more attention than I already am. The people cited as the best in the genre, by writers who claim to pay a whole lot of attention to the genre, don't do much for me at all. I read their names, I go to YouTube and check them out for a minute or two, and I come away unimpressed. Either they seem unimaginative (you're gonna talk to me about your car and your chain? Really? In 2010? That's about as interesting as a death metal dude grunting at me about Satan or mass murder, and at least the death metal dudes have the courtesy to make their lyrics indecipherable) or I just don't like their voices or the beats they're using. I really fucking hate Eminem, for example. Always have. Didn't like his first single, haven't liked anything since. One line, once, made me laugh - the one on his Soundbombing 2 track about how he couldn't read the lyric because his daughter scribbled over it.

What I'm saying is, I don't avoid new music, but it seems to me that the race to constantly be commenting about this week's thing provides no room for serious thought. Yes, some music can be understood with a single listen, but that would seem to me to be music unworthy of discussion. Some albums take a year to sink in, or more. So maybe people should come back in a fucking year with some serious thoughts.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Monday, 13 September 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

well no one here is gonna implore you to listen to eminem

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 September 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

balls, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 01:36 (fifteen years ago)

i mean at least "empire state" had the creme de la creme jock jam tie in, you could maybe admire jay-z's acumen or something. plus it applied hip-hop's theory of enya to alicia keys - to be encouraged.

balls, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

what the hell does that last sentence even mean?

flaccid house (The Reverend), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

hip-hop theory of enya = this (enya, alicia keys, dido, etc) works well if used sparingly. negative control in this case would be that fullblown "empire" alicia keys came out with.

balls, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 05:55 (fifteen years ago)

that's completely wrong tho, given alicia keys' sizable amount of classic material in her own right. "empire state of mind" is a bad look for her as well as jay-z

and in what world is the position of a soul singer who habitually collaborates with rappers vis-à-vis hip-hop remotely comparable to two singers whose distance from hip-hop is the point of their presence?

Don't blame me, I voted "Rehab".

Mo Tucker Mo Problems (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 09:14 (fifteen years ago)

I think I voted Work It, but it may have been Hey Ya. Neither one won, but that's a solid top 5.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 09:17 (fifteen years ago)

"Work It" is soooo much more exciting than "Freak" (much as I adore both).
