i think this poll will actually be more interesting than the crossover one cuz lots of this stuff isn't really canonized at all on ilx so we won't end up with something as "boring" as "my love" winning

Sum 41 - "Fat Lip" (2001) & The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Maps" are i think the only ones i like in the whole list, but i don't know (or don't know that i know) an awful lot of these tunes

zvookster, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

for the record, "the middle" would've been in my top 5 had that been on here

"bubbling" pictures for mormon approved j0hn (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

if "get it faster" was a jimmy eat world choice i would go with that, but i guess that must not have been a single huh?

xpost actually shit i should own up and say i love that Swing swing song too

For me too. Or Chop Suey.

I can't believe there are 2 MCR songs on here but not The Black Parade which is a song of epic proportions in my opinion.

Also, Train?! ;_;

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

that was definitely New Found Glory's best single and the first thing I've been like "oh fuck" about forgetting now

some dude, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i wasn't going to say it but wow drops of jupiter, huh?

horseshoe, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

repping for Train hits and thinking MCR fell off w/ Black Parade are 2 stock opinions I've argued many times in other threads, so I won't go into them too much again here

some dude, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

voted for #1 obv― some dude,

I forgot why that would be obvious and uh, have not read all your postings on rock, so maybe I am also missing a joke--like you hate that MCR song more than anything, and have repeatedly said that?

the Train song probably would be more at home next to Vanessa Carlton and shit on the pop list I'm working on, but it was a charting rock hit so this is the list it slotted into

some dude, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

I am kind of shocked there are TWO Limp Bizkit songs in this "shortlist"

6. Train - "Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)" (2001)

al why

strongohulkingtonsghost, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

okay this is probably "Maps" vs "Chop Suey!" vs... "Beautiful Day"

god I'm weird sometimes

feel free to answer my Korn Kuestion (HI DERE), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

the hardest thing about limiting to only 2 songs per band was cutting "Rollin'"

some dude, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

personally i would've picked "dirty little secret"

also have no idea what, like, 3 blink songs i could even pick

there would've been like 10 of my 50

"bubbling" pictures for mormon approved j0hn (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

Train prolly didn't need to be top 10 but it was always going to be in my top 20

some dude, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

haha i seriously like or love every song in that top ten except for that train song.

vote will probably be "mr. brightside" or "i'm not okay" though.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

"Dirty Little Secret," incredibly, only appeared on pop charts and no rock charts, and so was ineligible (although I would've instead picked "Move On," which was ineligible for the same reason)

some dude, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

kudos 2 u ship, but train are a bit too much the calling for me to get behind

>>>>The Strokes - "Hard To Explain" (2001)

my vote though a bit of a (nyc) cop out ;)

bnw, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

I went w/ a weird Blink pick because for me their best singles are "Dammit" and "What's My Age Again," which are both from the '90s, not as big on "All The Small Things" or "I Miss You" but I love that whole self-titled album and the less popular singles from it

some dude, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

man, i'm probably the biggest strokes stan on this board & "hard to explain" is one of my least favorite songs of theirs

when i saw julian solo a few months ago that was the only strokes song he played

"bubbling" pictures for mormon approved j0hn (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

i've always been partial to "down"

"bubbling" pictures for mormon approved j0hn (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

That Train song is their only hit that i've ever liked ever, but I really have no desire to hear it again

"Always" is crazy underrated and deserves the love it gets here

da croupier, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

Oh wait - I didn't see The Strokes one. I'll add that to my shortlist too.

Dammit is my fav Blink song but yes, 90s.

Aw man - I feel bad for starting the Train hate now. I didn't realize that was something Al's had to defend many times before. Sorry dude! That said, I now have "Drops of Jupiter" in my head and it's driving me crazy and it's YOUR FAULT. grrrr.

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

"12:51" would've been my strokes song

that one ages more and more now that they've put out material after 'room on fire' and it's become incredibly relevant that they should've gone the fun, frothy, cars route instead of the leather jackets & metal studs black-and-red motif that they chose

"bubbling" pictures for mormon approved j0hn (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

haha ENBB nah it's ok, I can take the Train fight, just saying I probably won't go to bat for it too hard

I liked Room On Fire as an album but for me all their good singles are from the first one

between these two for me. weird that the only two songs of this whole genre to make a good impression on me were both from 07.

Voting Jet, though there are definitely a few White Stripes singles I would've rated higher; just not that one. Also like the Finger Eleven, Killers, Nickelback songs, and a few others. Smart Green Day pick, too. Still, what a sad decade for radio rock.

xhuxk, Friday, 3 September 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

Well, actually, a "few" others is probably exagerrating. (Maybe a couple, though. And there's lots of titles I don't recognize, right off. I do like that White Stripes song; just don't think it's their best. Don't mind "Chop Suey" either, though I basically hate that band.) (Aaaah....Didn't notice the Darkness 'til now! Probably should've gone with that, instead.)

xhuxk, Friday, 3 September 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Maps" (2004)
29. Blink 182 - "Always" (2004)
21. Paramore - "Misery Business" (2007)
17. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "By The Way" (2002)
8. Limp Bizkit - "My Way" (2001)
6. Train - "Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)" (2001)

^^one of these i think. there's a couple others i can't remember how they go that i think i like too

max skim (k3vin k.), Friday, 3 September 2010 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

If the deciding criterion is "Which of these songs would you most enjoy hearing if it got played RIGHT NOW?" then frankly I'd vote for "I Believe In A Thing Called Love." If the Strokes pick were "The Modern Age" or "12:51," I'd go for that. Leaning toward Icky Thump, but I do really enjoy that Darkness song . . .

i did not see this!

my favourite thing connected to any of these tracks is the jacques lu cont remix of "mr brightside", which is an all-timer imo; felix da housecat dropping it as his last track while swigging from a bottle of tequila at tdk '06 is one of my favourite raving memories of the past decade

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSheh22KGQg

but i hate the original, so i might vote for "maps", even though that's nowhere near my favourite yyys song

by "fair trial" i meant like celebrating what should be celebrated and accepting & engaging w/ commercial rock on its own terms, rather than flat out dismissal or focusing on instances of it acting out of character/crossover with indie trends. don't mean uncool as a negative value judgment either, but it's true!

I'll rep for that train song too

also can't believe korn hired the london philharmonic orchestra to background their cover of the cameo song, jeez

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

think the results are gonna come down to mr. brightside vs. maps, which somehow also seem to be the safest 'indie' choices

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

i think my chem has a chance altho they might split votes

markers garvey (The Reverend), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:18 (fifteen years ago)

I love MCR but for some reason I dunno if any of their songs individually can stand up to the rest of the list...maybe if the black parade were on here

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

fat lip not as good as I remembered it being :/

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

I'm shocked by how many of these I don't hate, or even enjoy, considering that almost all of these were radio hits.

"Go With The Flow" is better than most of these.

billstevejim, Monday, 13 September 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

This guy clearly listens to a lot of rock music.

billstevejim, Monday, 13 September 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

just listened to the chemical romance song for the first time. if that's the best thing the 00s could cough out, we're talking a pretty dire decade in music.

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 04:27 (fifteen years ago)

they're called MY chemical romance, charlie

idk about A++ either, tbh

'when you were young' is probably my favorite song here i guess

ciderpress, Monday, 13 September 2010 04:32 (fifteen years ago)

that's a really good song -- probably not my favorite Killers single though

markers, Monday, 13 September 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

37. Alien Ant Farm - "Smooth Criminal" (2001)
36. Korn - "Word Up!" (2004)
35. Disturbed - "Land Of Confusion" (2006)
34. The Ataris - "Boys Of Summer" (2003)

Was this intentional? And P.S. No Doubt's "It's My Life" is better than all of these.

fine, MY chemical romance. i was actually prepared to be pleasantly surprised by the song. didn't happen, but it's never in my nature to celebrate a dislike for anything i hear. i'd rather have listened to it and enjoyed it.

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 04:46 (fifteen years ago)

is it also not in your nature to poo poo an entire decade based on one song

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

or one human's opinion

charlie h is becoming based by osmosis

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 September 2010 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

"is it also not in your nature to poo poo an entire decade based on one song"

"or one human's opinions"

to suggest those things would be to misinterpret what i wrote. i'm not commenting on the decade. i'm commenting on the writer's placement of my chemical romance at no. 1, which i disagree with. what i personally think about the decade doesn't even come into play here.

jordan, i don't even know what you mean about the osmosis thing. care to elaborate?

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 04:59 (fifteen years ago)

billstevejim, Monday, 13 September 2010 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

so, basically i'm saying that if my chemical romance are responsible for the best rock song of the 00s (which they aren't in my opinion, because i think they're fucking terrible), then the decade must have been pretty bad for music (which it isn't in my opinion, because i think my chemical romance are fucking terrible).

anyway, this conversation is going nowhere.

sorry dude but you can't expect to Kramer in here on a false premise and make ~sweeping proclamations about the state of music~ and then get butthurt over people calling you out

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 05:31 (fifteen years ago)

i think you are being pedantic. and if your agenda is to "call people out" then i think we have our wires crossed, because mine is to simply comment on music and not make ~inaccurate assumptions about what other people write~. it's also presumptuous to assume i'm "butthurt". but if it gives you a perverse thrill to think you've got a one-up, i'm happy to let you continue thinking that way.

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 05:51 (fifteen years ago)

i think the lesson here is that it never turns out well to come in a positive thread and be like "all the music being discussed in here is fucking awful"

i've been thinking the last few days that part of the reason maps is so incredible is that it creates this entire coherent world unto itself where everything falls exactly into place, the way the guitar octaves in the chorus echo the intro and the single note lines spin around the vocal melody it's like yo the indie rock lord of the rings has arrived
