the diary

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Sunday, 5 September 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ title

was thinking of a scarface edition for that "best of" ilx project but it wld prob be the noz c90 with "emeritus" & facemob - "millions" sneaked in

i guess The Diary or the debut, tho i think i like Emeritus more than most ppl

zvookster, Sunday, 5 September 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

i liked emeritus more than most ppl too

still doesnt touch 'diary'

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Sunday, 5 September 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

the only songs I think are less than great are Jesse James (more lyrically than anything, it's thundering) and the song that interpolates "99 balloons", but everything else is top n-izz-otch. I think my fav is "No Tears" though, especially these lyrics:

I've got this killer up inside of me
I can't talk to my mother, so I talk to my diary
I'm goin off on the deep end
I find myself face to face with myself while I'm sleepin
I see your picture in my head and my hand shake
You can run, you can hide, but there's no escape
My inner feelings show no mercy on my enemy
I got to get this muthafucka before he gets to me
So in your own blood you'll bathe
And I won't stop until I put this muthafucka in his fuckin grave
And I can say this once again
You can cry but you'll still die, there'll be no tears in the end

has anyone heard Dopeman Music yet besides shiplo? think it's been sitting on my harddrive unzipped since release but i must not wanna hear it for some reason

zvookster, Sunday, 5 September 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

i heard it. i couldnt really get into it. only listened 1nce

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Sunday, 5 September 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

scarface doesn't really seem like a mixtape rapper to me, and what a weird time to decide to do it...

funky brewster (San Te), Sunday, 5 September 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's an odd release for that reason but it's still pretty good, just about in the same league as his last LP

feel like voting for The World Is Yours or The Last Of A Dying Breed at the moment to kinda go with a less obvious pick

some dude, Sunday, 5 September 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

both Emeritus & M.A.D.E. have great stuff on 'em, and yeah The Diary is fantastic but still -- The Fix is the one that reaches me. Track after track such a great complete-picture album. "Look Who's Back," come on. That is the stuff.

Still let's all bump "Recognize" from Balls & My Word, album of pasted-together outtakes but a great fuckin track - sit back and smoke me one/the Obi-Wan Kenobi one

the diary is classic, but mr. scarface is back is my personal favorite. it's the most like a Geto Boys record (in terms of subject matter and the beats), which is no bad thing IMHO.

Polish Lightning (Eisbaer), Friday, 17 September 2010 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i voted for that...kinda like an extension of grip it! on that other level

board of the living based heads (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 17 September 2010 01:29 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it really fleshes out the Scarface persona (paranoid, suicidal, profane and religious/almost apologetic for this lifestyle) in a way that grip it! and we can't be stopped only did incompletely.

Polish Lightning (Eisbaer), Friday, 17 September 2010 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

90s scarface is generally better than 00's scarface, but i think fix is the most consistent album. GOAT in any case.

I WOULD
NEVER VIOLATE THE CODES OF THE STREETS
AND I WOULD NEVER MAKE A PROMISE THAT I KNOW I COULDN'T KEEP

OR SURRENDER INFORMATION ON MY BOYS TO THE POLICE
AND YOU COULD
NEVER CATCH ME ON THE BLOCK WITHOUT A STRAP, AND I WOULD
NEVER PULL IT OUT UNLESS I'M BOUTS TO BLACK
AND I COULD NEVER FORGET MY HOMIES DYING FOR THEY SCRATCH
FOREVER POURING OUT LIQUOR FOR THEM, GOD SEND THEM BACK AND I
NEVER SHED TEARS, MY HEART IS LIKE A STONE NOW
NEVER THOUGHT I'D LIVE TO SEE 21, LOOK, I'M GROWN NOW
NEVER SAY "NEVER," THEY TELL ME ALL THE TIME

Mr. Scarface Is Back, no question for me

let's have a toast for the cumlords (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 17 September 2010 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

but dude's is hands down one of the most consistent runs of music in the history of hip-hop. Almost all classics.

let's have a toast for the cumlords (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 17 September 2010 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

I finally got Made and even that one's pretty awesome. and yea, Mr. Scarface is back is very different in tone from his later work, which is kind of cool.

Diary still wins for me, though The Fix is really good too.

dude this btw is why you will always be indie rock deej to me whether you listen to indie rock or not. you may not dig the jams but the ideology is u to a T my friend and game recognize game ok. because going out of one's way to try and position one's taste somehow above the fix just because it's kanye-produced is indie-ism at its most pernicious. you know why people voted the fix? because it's a fucking awesome, solid album with great lyrics & performances & rad grooves, and fretting about about whether kanye produced it makes you mr.

its more that kanye is an NY-approved critically respected artist who 'legitimized' scarface to a degree among ppl who had considered him 'ok for the south' before that, thus the 5 mic source award, thus the average ilxor appreciation

its a good record & some ppl -- like yourself -- i would have no problem w/ voting for it w/ well-argued positions. but the reason it won this poll doesnt have anything to do w/ 'convincing arguments' & everything to do w/ the major label def jam record w/ kanye beats getting more attention from a coastally biased rap media + critics deference to such

i pretty much think the reason that I always considered myself "indie dude who's mostly into hip-hop" instead of just "hip-hop dude" is because i'm too comfortable being schlubby

I think Scarface's voice is at its most powerful on Diary -- whereas on the other albums, including The Fix, he often went for a gruff, more aggressive tone, he delivers so much of this album in a booming, smooth baritone...giving the feel of a veteran of the streets who has seen it all and is telling his stories to the younger street generation. It's almost like sage Scarface.

yea but he mostly does that on his s/t and Stillmatic, and even then on the latter it doesn't comprise the entire album. Besides, even if he's misguided on many things, I admire him for at least reaching beyond the standard base rap topics.

About the Book

From Geto Boys legend and renowned storyteller Scarface, comes a passionate memoir about how hip-hop changed the life of a kid from the south side of Houston, and how he rose to the top-and ushered in a new generation of rap dominance.
Scarface is the celebrated rapper whose hits include "On My Block," "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" and "Damn It Feels Good to be a Gangsta" (made famous in the cult film Office Space). The former president of Def Jam South, he's collaborated with everyone from Kanye West, Ice Cube and Nas, and had many solo hits such as "Guess Who's Back" feat. Jay-Z and "Smile" feat. Tupac. But before that, he was a kid from Houston in love with rock-and-roll, listening to AC/DC and KISS.

In Diary of a Madman, Scarface shares how his world changed when he heard Run DMC for the first time; how he dropped out of school in the ninth grade and started selling crack; and how he began rapping as the new form of music made its way out of New York and across the country. It is the account of his rise to the heights of the rap world, as well as his battles with his own demons and depression. Passionately exploring and explaining the roots and influences of rap culture, Diary of a Madman is the story of hip-hop-the music, the business, the streets, and life on the south side Houston, Texas.
