NOMINATIONS THREAD for ILM's Alltime Best Techno/Electronic/Ambient/etc TRACKS poll (nominations end 9/30/10 11:59 PDT)

Gonna do a top 300 for this (and for albums), aiming for a November rollout. This thread is for both nominations and VETOING, since there is some "controversy" here and there over certain acts. for example, there are some people debating the krautrock question w/r/t stuff like cluster, kraftwerk, etc (pretty obvious to me that bands like can and guru guru are out.) i'll go with the consensus on what should be disallowed for the purposes of this poll.

there is no limit on nominations so have at it.

to start off with some nominations:

aphex twin - xtal
deepchord - elysian
ellen allien - sehnsucht
mia grobelny - cold city

Manuel Gottsching - E2-E4

Moka, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

I think a distinction should probably be made between electronic dance music (including IDM, etc.) and non dance stuff.
I mean, trying to rank stuff that encompasses LaMonte Young, Squarepusher, Brian Eno, and Ricardo Villalobos is kind of silly, no?

Either way:

Carl Craig - The Climax
Plastikman - Ethnik
Soul Capsule - Law of Grace
Akufen - Skidoos

EDB, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

Giorgio Moroder - From Here To Eternity

Moka, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

I'll add some ambient nom nom noms:

Gas - track 5 (off of Konigsforst) (<Gas is f'd in this poll because of lack of track names!)
Stars of the Lid - Requiem for Dying Mothers (Part 1 & 2) (<could be split into two nominations because they're technically 2 separate, I guess, but it's really one piece of music)
Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country
A Silver Mt. Zion - 13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round the Side of Your Bed
Seefeel - Climactic Phase 3

Z S, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

And while were on it:

Donna Summer - I Feel Love

Moka, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

A Silver Mt. Zion - 13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round the Side of Your Bed

I like representing Gas, Stars of the Lid and Seefeel as noone had mentioned them so far but saying ASMZ is electronica is a bit of a stretch imho

Moka, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

Does industrial count?

Mr. John "Manalishi" Abbott (Viceroy), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

e*vax - neon & aluminum
I, Cactus - China Shipping Co.
Komputer - Valentina
Kraftwerk - Computer World
Kraftwerk - Neon Lights

Mr. John "Manalishi" Abbott (Viceroy), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)

Every song by every 8-bit peoples artist ever.

Mr. John "Manalishi" Abbott (Viceroy), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, trying to rank stuff that encompasses LaMonte Young, Squarepusher, Brian Eno, and Ricardo Villalobos is kind of silly, no?

it's overwhelming, but it is kind of interesting. i personally associate all this music anyway, so i like having a poll that includes all of it. for this poll i've drawn the line at stuff that is pop/vocal or has guitars (e.g. ASMZ?).

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

ASMZ is electronica is a bit of a stretch imho

I agree, which is why I'd definitely say that song is an ambient song! I dunno, I figured someone might object to that one, given the rest of the band's output, but to me this is an ambient song, and a very good one at that:

Oh no no no no, even I have my limits and Radiohead are a Rock Band (tm) and do not belong on this poll. Get thee hence.

Yeah I was unsure about that. Those tracks are completely electronic, but I won't be upset if they're vetoed.

Heh no xp, it's just curious how The Fugees slip in between L and M. It's going to be one mammoth nominations list by the time everyone's done though.

Yeah I mean - I'm happy for this stuff to be here obviously! My ballot will be 60% this kind of stuff if it's allowed to be! I just think it's further in both lineage and sound from the platonic 'electronic' track than, say, Everything In Its Right Place.

I was really looking forward to this poll, but if the Human League, one of the key groups in popularising electronic music and the single act who changed my outlook on music more than any other are vetoed then fuck it I'm out of here.

State Attorney Foxhart Cubycheck (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

idk i feel like i appreciate song-based electronic pop like the human league with a completely different part of my brain than tracky house/techno stuff - same with uk garage - to the extent that it makes it impossible to actually assess them alongside each other, so yeah i'd veto all of that

Blanket negging Pet Shop Boys kind of ignores a gigantic swath of their career...? (of course it's likely no one is nominating the Nightlife singles or any of their remixes but it seems kind of revisionist be all "they were a pop group" in the face of stuff like "We All Feel Better In The Dark" and "It's Alright" and "Paninaro" and etc etc

Not sure it was intended to open the door to every pop song that uses a synthesizer...

I wouldn't say that, but I would say that the Human League and Pet Shop Boys are important enough in the history of electronic pop music to be included. If we're excising all electronic pop simply because it is pop, then this should have been made clear at the outset, and the parameters more strictly defined.

emil.y, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

i assume "electronic" isn't actually meant to be taken in its broadest sense, otherwise let's just throw open the doors to every digitally-produced song ever?

no-one ever suggested that. but the pet shop boys make music with electronic instruments ergo it's electronic music. we are, basically, speaking of a methodology here, not an aesthetic.

All I'm really saying is that PSB have done enough house-y and techno-y songs that blanket dismissing them seems wrong.

Acoustic drums, it's not.

(A human playing electronic drum pads is admitted only if no acoustic drums are used.)

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

Guitar samples are ok maybe?

I'm guilty of nomming some Italo/synthpop stuff above (on the basis that similar had already been posted), I don't mind retracting them if they're outside whatever boundaries get decided on...But purging everything that's a "pop song" will end up dumping Kraftwerk and the Vengaboys (among others)!

An alternative would be to accept whatever people suggest but ask voters to take into account whether a track falls into their personal "techno/electronic/ambient/etc" canon - the purist vote will make sure that Human League or whoever don't dominate but there will be a sprinkling of pop classics in there with the bobbins and bangers.

seandalai, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

A sample of a guitar is alright if you are using a drum machine. But live guitars *and* acoustic drums = rock and I'm not having it. ;-)

Half serious: we could vote first on whether each nominee fits under the intended techno/electronic/ambient/etc umbrella (yes/no/idk per nominee). Tracks with more yes than no votes would go through to the final ballot. This would surely lead to lots of pissed off ILXors and entertaining internet arguments!

?? ive never claimed to be a 'techno expert' altho i prob know a lot more stuff (altho more chi house related) than u realize, its just that this is a huge gigantic genre & i dunno a "ROCK MUSIC" nominations poll would seem equally daunting 2 me. i mean, we have fukkin four tet nominated and no one yet mentioned the percolator

the agony of bungled zings

tbh i am w/ deej on this, reading the nominations so far has really dampened my enthusiasm for the thing

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

basically my issue is the pointless eclecticism

like maybe if we had a conversation about how "the bells" stacks up to "the percolator" or source direct to photek or "mushrooms" vs "in the trees" or whatever we'd be able to do some meaningful inquiry, get at what makes a genre tick and dissect it's conventions and values

fuck, we could even indulge ilm's pathetic boner for poptimism and do "energy flash" vs "sandstorms"

but instead we're descending into the dank anus of record-collector nerdery, and in the end we're going to get kluster next to kompakt next to kenny dixon jr and we'll pat ourselves on the back at a list only slightly less lame than the one in "losing my edge"

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

lol'n p hard @ "meaningful inquiry"

can't we do this after the poll?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

i would like to point out that the notion of an ilm poll results thread ending with every clapping each other on the back and saying, "good show, everyone" is pure fantasy considering poll results threads have likely led to destroyed friendships, uncalled-for epithets, and murders yet to be solved.

seandalai, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 11:21 (fifteen years ago)

sorry deej i was just playing

as i said in the other thread, considering how popular these nomination threads have been how come the rolling dance threads and related are such barren waste lands lately? is it just a sad fact of ilm that mindless listing and cataloguing is always gonna win out over actual meaningful discussion? i guess i know the answer to that but still, surely it's just as much effort to make these polls (which for the record i've never participated in and don't intend to) and vote in them as it is to i dunno post in the techno/house of the past thread about the hi hats in "forever monna" or whatever?

lao gan ma (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 12:05 (fifteen years ago)

i don't want to spoil ya'lls fun anyway, i'm just honestly interested as to why so few of the dance music experts in this thread don't express their love of the music elsewhere

lao gan ma (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 12:07 (fifteen years ago)

Me, personally? Because a couple of years ago, when I first turned up on dance threads asking questions that were taken to be stupid, I was told by a couple of the denizens within "OMG, if *she* starts getting into dance music, I'm getting out of it" - which can kind of put you off a bit.

Also because a lot of the things I'm interested in tend to be historically focused rather than sifting through the sea of newness to find stuff I'd like. With regards to new stuff, I'd rather read people who know their stuff than me shooting my mouth off and probably being told I'm wrong. I read the general thread, I certainly listen to the YouTubes but I don't think I have the knowledge to go much further unless a very specific thing is being discussed.

out of ash i rise w/my red hair and eat vegetables like air (Karen D. Tregaskin), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

My presence here is v. dilettantish - I'm far from an expert on dance and my electronic tastes are to a large extent offshoots of my love for disco and Krautrock. I can talk Italo/early house/IDM/Hyperdub/beardo ok but I had never heard The Percolator until deej's rant above.

I agree there's a lower barrier to entry on a poll thread than on a Rolling Dance one, which probably works well for outsiders like me who come to learn and annoys insiders who are capable of arguing about hi hats and coffee pots. Depending on how this all works out I may or may not vote in the poll, it's not so important to me. In the metal poll (also characterised by subgenre territorialism and true/false oppositions) I didn't feel qualified to nominate or vote but I enjoyed the results rundown a great deal, heard a lot of new music and came away feeling I'd learned something. I'm hoping for similar outcomes here.

seandalai, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 13:20 (fifteen years ago)

I'm kinda like Kate: these days I don't really follow new trends in dance/electronic music quite as actively as I did in the 90s, so I don't feel like I have much to contribute to the on-going "bobbins" threads. As for the "bobbins of the past" thread, it seems to be focused mostly on the sort of stuff I'm not very familiar with. My biggest love in electronic music is (pretty much) German non-minimal techno/house/dance of the 90s, but that isn't discussed much on ILM. I even started a thread about it, but it wasn't a success:

A Youtube/discussion thread for non-minimal German techno/rave/house/trance of the 90s (and beyond)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

pretty much what Seandalai said, though my areas of semi-expertise are different. Looking forward to seeing how the chips fall, arbitrarily as they may.

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 13:30 (fifteen years ago)

I suspect this will be waaay more divisive than the metal poll. What ever your preferred metal sub-genre, there's still a sense of everyone pulling in the same direction for a common cause and aesthetic. Not so with dance, inter-scene rivally can be very fucking snarky. Part of the fun I guess.

I'm not an expert in any sense, but I enjoy the genre (the poppy end, as with just about every other genre basically) and hope the tracks rundown will be a great way to hear more good stuff. No interest in debating hi-hats*, thanks. And it's hardly mindless listing - the rundown threads are great, whenever an actual discussion manages to break out among the bitching.

I'm also aware that the more people pitch in, the better any poll is going to be - so here I am.

* not actually true

Sparks - The Number One Song in Heaven

Veto... sorry.

If you veto this, then you should veto pretty much every disco tune in the nominations, including "I Feel Love". "Number One" is no less electronic than "I Feel Love": they both have real drums, vocals, and a bunch of synths.

I have no problem with excluding disco from this poll (if we want to focus on house/techno and what came after them), but it should be all or nothing then.

and are 'Playing With Knives' and 'I'm Gonna Get You' different tracks? I thought they were different parts of the same song! The rollerskating girl in the video was a brief fixation of mine.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

They're different tunes. "I'm Gonna Get You" is the one that goes "why waste your time, you know you're gonna be mine". "Knives" doesn't have any singing except some vocal samples, IIRC.

On the other hand people manage to compile polls where every record ever released is eligible, so it's not likely to be that big a deal.

No idea how to whittle this lot down to an actual ballot though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

OTM. I've been listening to electronic/dance music for almost 20 years now, and it's pretty much my favourite type of music in the history of music, so choosing 20 or 40 tracks for a ballot feel impossible.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

ask gear to allow a ballot of 100 then

I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

Ronan is it the fact that the noms list is too large or the fact that it would be impossible to make a top list?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

i just don't know where i'd start with a list really....it's too broad for me, i think there must be a few hundred tracks i love. also it's that thing of the more you're into something the more difficult it is to make lists about it.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

it was hard doing the metal list, and this one wont be any easier.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:49 (fifteen years ago)

your shortlist will be several hundred tracks/albums

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:49 (fifteen years ago)

This'll be harder than the metal for me. I know more dance music.

I hope remixes are treated as separate entities in this poll, since they are such an essential part of dance music. For example, I'd definitely vote for the "Beau Mot Plage" remix nommed above, but I'm not sure if I'd include the original in my ballot at all. The same goes for the DJ Crystl remix of "A Better Place", and many others.
