I'm just saying, if I had to guess, a similar survey of all the people on this thread would probably average out to something lower than 7/10.

8 from me. Funny and catchy and holds up to repeat listening + I like novelty swearing in pop music. Not sure about the crybaby bit near the end though.

8. I'm going to laugh when this poll gets a 7, triggering anguish that the 'hatred wasn't large enough on ILX'.

I dunno, man. I don't think the average will be that high, but if it is I'm not gonna fly into a rage.

the kelpolaris usic prize (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 16 September 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

this isn't really going to give us an average anyway, because if 25 people voted 8, 5 voted 9, 2 voted 10, and 10 voted 1, it'd look like we settled on "8" but the average would be 6.5

turn in yer badge (San Te), Thursday, 16 September 2010 13:30 (fifteen years ago)

If only there was some way of seeing how many people voted for each option.

Eejit Piaf (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 16 September 2010 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

uh yea but that isn't teh same as an 'average', though the statistical merit of 'averages' is debatable anyway.....

turn in yer badge (San Te), Thursday, 16 September 2010 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

I'm suggesting that it might be possible for somebody with a maths degree to work out the average from the poll results?

turn in yer badge (San Te), Thursday, 16 September 2010 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

I actually haven't listened to the song since the first time I played it. Hate to say it but the ILX thread on the song actually ruined it for me tdue to the association. I'm sure I'll still love it next time I spin it though.

turn in yer badge (San Te), Thursday, 16 September 2010 14:04 (fifteen years ago)

with the recent brackets polls the true 'winners' weren't plainly listed in the results at the top and someone further down the thread did the math. it's not that big a deal.

One point off for the golddigger/n***er rhyme.
One point off for novelty factor.
Otherwise, good to hear a song where it's clear that every second has been thought through.

Excluding Skits and Such (Eazy), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

This is a 10, easy. It is lyrically sharp, well-written, sarcastic, great backing vocals, catchy/hooky as shit, comes off extremely fresh despite the "throwback" nature of its influence, and is a TON of fun to sing along to. It's the catchiest, most radio-friendly song this year -- and it can't be played on radio! I played this about 4-5 times in a row on first blush. Can't say that about any other song this year.

yeah i do kinda like that 50 intro but it also highlights one of my major problems with the song which is how rapidly it switches between addressing the girl and the guy.

if it only addressed the guy i think i'd like it more.

[Bruce is sitting in a diner, on a lunch break]

Can you believe I work in a bank? *Me* in a bank? Does that sound fucked or what? Cause you know all the convoluted back bullshit that involves, i.e., I have to wear a tie. But you know me, right. I wear one that's a little crazy, like this piano keys tie. So when people come in, it's like, "Whoa! What's *he* doing in a bank?"

First thing in the morning, people give me shit - that's how I know my day has started. "I'm sorry sir, its not my fault if your signature just isn't holding up. It's just not good enough. I've been watching it deteriorate for months. You're losing it guy, and it shows. Oh yeah, I'll take it around and show it to people, but not so they'll authorize the cheque, so they can have a good laugh. Sir, were you aware that you're gross? Did you know that your cheques smell?" I looked at him and it was like, "Who would fuck you?" But at night, I'm crazy.

[Cue cheesy dance club music. The lighting in the diner changes to flashing colours and strobe lights. Bruce gets off his chair and dances passionately, but rather like any guy at a junior prom]

Some nights I go crazy, some nights I get crazy. I'm the king of the club! I get back and forth. Hey [Kufka?], how ya doin? Fuck the bank I work for, fuck the bank! Hey Ben! Good lookin [?], great hair! Fuck the bank I work for, fuck the bank.

[The music stops, the original lighting returns. Bruce slides back into his seat]

". . . I'm sorry 'Ms.' Iverson. I just can't fit my lunch break into the tight parameters you set. To me a lunch hour isn't an hour - it's a state of mind. I'm sorry if it's welfare cheque day and that they'll be hobbling in in droves. Don't blame me for *having* a job, why don't you blame some of the people who can't hold down jobs but take cabs all the time anyway?" I look at Ms. Manythroats and it's like, "Who would fuck you?" She should be bisexual. It would increase her chances. But someday, I'll go crazy.

[The club music and lighting returns. Bruce is dancing once more]

I'll eat pancakes on her grave! Forget my diet. Fuck the bank I work for, fuck the bank! I'll be quitting soon. Fuck the bank!

Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 September 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

gave it an 8, probably should have gone 9, but i'm burned out on the idea of the song, more so than the song itself

will average like a 5.5 by the looks of things

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 September 2010 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

In two years at Singles Jukebox, I think I've given out three 10's, maybe less.

Muscus ex Craneo Humano (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 September 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

I would say like maybe one song a year would get a 10 from me. And this is prolly the only song of 2010 that gets one from me

let's have a toast for the cumlords (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 16 September 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

is this poll inspired by the singles jukebox rating? would not bet money on ya'll liking anything this year but i am pleasantly surprised tbh

i liked what rev wrote about this song and smh at what forks wrote about hard in the paint

i guess this as good a time as any to ask ppl how many 10s they really hear a year or just how good a song has to be to get a 10

grading on a curve is okay for songs but not for presidents eh?

this song is better than any other chart pop song I've heard this summer, ergo it gets a 10

xp

Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 September 2010 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

I'd give out 3-4 perfect ratings a year if I wrote about music in any capacity (except on ILX which doesn't mean shit).

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Thursday, 16 September 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

and maybe worth C+Ping from the comments thread on singles:

when i first started doing this, I sat down and formulated the following scale so I could easily assign a number grade based on my feelings after a buncha listens.

10 – Spectacular, into heavy and permanent rotation, am actively making other people listen to this in my personal life
9 – Among the best of the year, heavy rotation
8 – Great, am actively repeat listening
7 – Really good, would listen again
6 – Good, but possibly somewhat flawed
5 – Take it or leave it. Meh.
4 – Flawed, not very interesting
3 – Boring, would avoid
2 – Offensive, actively avoiding
1- Noxious, would turn it off
0 – Unredeemable, representative of a serious musical problem.

I’d be curious to hear what everyone else’s numeric approximations are

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 September 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

depends if it's singles or tracks, 2009 10/10's for me are maybe like,

reckless with your love
you belong with me
blame it

and maybe some other stuff i can't remember at this second. i think a good year should have at least three or four & as a rule of thumb they should be lifetime jams that you would bump in the grave & not relatively fleeting fascinations or obsessions which is more what this is to me, & i gave it a 9. this shit is such a blast to listen to & sing along with & sing when you're not listening to that it's easy to shrug off its maybe-ephemaral or novelty quality

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 16 September 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

ok based on the few responses i had no idea that this song was like "omg best song i've ever heard" from so many people, i just assumed everyone "liked it a lot"

fwiw, i kinda go by the "must be serious #1 contender for a [10]" and generally hear about 3-5 per year. so far this year i've heard three unless i'm forgetting something: "fuck you", "lemonade" (both of which i did give [10]s on tsj) and yahzarah's "why dontcha call me no more" (which didn't run despite the bug i put is wbs' ear). compare that with only two [0]s: "young forever" and "hey soul sister".

jukebox scores are pretty weird these days cuz they depend so much on who actually reviews a track - there are plenty of examples where if one writer hadn't bothered or another had, the average would've been completely different

xpost median's the one where you just put the numbers in order, and then take the middle one e.g if the scores were 0, 8, 8 & 10 then the average would be 6.5 but the median would be 8 (i think)

just sayin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah, i never really got why that was a good measurement. like, the median of 0, 0, 1, 3, 9, 9, 10 would be...3.

though while i may have forgotten everything i ever learned in maths, i do know that with the number of people voting here, one or two absentees will have made v little difference to the average compared to the same situation on the jukebox

First of all...why the hell this FAT ASS SLUT get to be in a video but when I was her size and tried out for videos...the first thing they would raise their eyebrows at is how much I used to "jiggle" I guess. But another problem is I don't have a lot of breasts so maybe if I did JEW music producers would probably give me a chance. *rolling my damn eyes* This is NOT the first time I have seen SEA WALRUS SIZED SLUTBUCKETS with SANDBAGS for titties get to be in a music video with NO problem.

Second of all...THERE IS NO EXPLANING THIS SICK ASS VIDEO!!!! The ONLY person who can explain this is KANYE' or his music producer...NOBODY HERE cuz 95% of people are just GUESSING what this video is about...there's no actual FACT what this video is about.

Does he REALLY thing they are gonna play this video on MTV or even VH1?!?!? WTF is he thinking?!?!? Like we don't have ENOUGH violence going on in the world and now music videos are reduced to having violence in it. WHEN DOES THE MADNESS STOP?!?!

The Glee cast has had 89 entries in the Hot 100, but only one of those has landed in the top 10 ("Don't Stop Believin'") and only three others have been in the top 20 ("Total Eclipse of the Heart," "Poker Face," "Toxic"). From what I've read, it seems like "Teenage Dream" is likely to join that group when this week's chart is released, but I'm not sure if the Glee version of "Fuck You" is guaranteed to peak higher than #17.

Domingo Halliburton (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

Hmm, I thought they were charting better than that. Guess I was just guessing based on the overexposure and their placement on the iTunes charts.

Chances are in favor of this song being #1 on rolling stone's 2010 list any up for "record of the year" grammies, which really only noteworthy because of the song's title.

i am going to laugh so fucking hard if the glee cast version of this song outpeaks the original in america

Close! Glee version debuted at #11, but that was accompanied by the original jumping to #9.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Friday, 20 May 2011 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

I rate this 5 out of ten. Fake soul for radio pops - not awful but kind of plastic and gratingly inauthentic. Dude's a good singer, but I hate all this kind of studio-retro Ronson-y thing.

broodje kroket (dog latin), Friday, 20 May 2011 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

The album is growing on me, however. It's thankfully less retro.

no, none of those euphemisms, it's too brilliantly and organically integrated to give away.

(don't look closely at the soundtrack listing, for full impact)
