am torn between either "Hotter than a Middle Eastern climate / Find it, Tony Matterhorn dutty wine it" b/c everything just seems to kick in extra hard at that point and "P-p-pink wig, thick ass give 'em whiplash / I think big, get cash, make 'em blink fast" for the last triumphant voice switch-up

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 10:57 (fifteen years ago)

would vote for "You could be the king but watch the queen conquer" if I could vote for by itself. but I'll have to think about these as couplets

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

feel like the cheesecake line is gonna walk this. but I'll vote for 'And I'm all up, all up, all up in the bank with the funny face / And if I'm fake I ain't noticed cuz my MONEY AIN'T'

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 11:35 (fifteen years ago)

^^that last line is pretty interesting w/r/t summing up nicki's position in the game, position vis-à-vis realness &c &c - see also "forget barbie, fuck nicki, sh-she's fake!"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

i cannot fucking wait for the video of this, btw

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

first instinct was to vote for cheesecake, but I'm torn btwn that, "FIRST THINGS FIRST I'LL EAT YR BRAINS" and "PINK WIGS THICK ASS" and "Let, me get this straight, wait, I'm the rookie?" for her delivery

very hard will have to think on it

idk whether this was intended but i heard matterhorn as a double ref back to "climb it"

"Let, me get this straight, wait, I'm the rookie?" for her delivery

was gonna vote for this, for the sudden calm hush around it, but I gotta go with "all up in the bank" for getting growly enough to let the hush sound good

i only want to see a video for this song if it involves Ross, Jay and Kanye in campy monster costumes and then Nicki rapping her verse calmly in a beige pantsuit

using the title of the song 7 times in her verse kinda sums up how lazy her hyperactivity really is

using the title of the song 7 times in her verse kinda sums up how lazy her hyperactivity really is

What? Huh? There is a theme here and she rocks it. There is glory in repetition. Welcome to pop music.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Monday, 4 October 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

i didn't say it was a bad verse, it's just funny that even her consensus best verse ever is so unimaginative and repetitive with word choice. and lol @ some boring fucks i know nothing about being all 'oh my stars it's that contrarian scalliwag some dude!' because i said something other than omg this song is amazing

algernod shiplies (some dude), Monday, 4 October 2010 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

um, the verse begins and ends with the title, and in the middle there's a part where she busts it out five times in two lines, where the repetitive is obviously for effect, not a sign of laziness.

da croupier, Monday, 4 October 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely don't think it's her best verse ever (maybe "itty bitty piggy"? Or "sweet dreams"?), it's just a landmark one for her (polling "itty bitty piggy" would have garnered maybe two votes max)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 4 October 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

the repetition, rather. It's not like she's lil b or something. xpost

'consensus' doesn't mean 'what lex thinks' fyi

algernod shiplies (some dude), Monday, 4 October 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

my problem with this verse is that i feel like she hasn't found a way to make her rampant accent switch ups work in the context of a continuous flow -- even when you read the verse back w/o listening to it you can notice these breaks ("eat your brains", "all up in the bank with the funny face", "so let me get this straight", "bride of chucky") where it's like she stitched together bits of 6 different verses -- the middle part of the verse works well cuz she actually builds on something for a few bars

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 October 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno, i kind of think the choppiness makes the whole thing work in a blockbuster whizz-bang-boom type way

ayo for dayo (The Reverend), Monday, 4 October 2010 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

man, dayo, there is no way that you and I exit some dude's "scalliwag" comment with any degree of integrity

had kind of a breakthrough Nicki Minaj moment the other day listening to "Bottoms Up" when she's bouncing between all these different personas, doing the cutesy/sexy(?) babytalk shit, then the really deadpan Anna Nicole Smith shoutout at the end, it all felt like it was saying something really IMPORTANT about like body image and celebrity culture and shit -- was pretty stoned tho, idk. but I like her more now.

yeah but i also posted in the kanye thread around the same time that it would be in my year-end somewhere in the 30s or 40s. i was more an opponent of the album's #1 masterpiece status than the album itself but yeah there are things i've said that suggest otherwise i guess ::shrug::

Really the only totally unforgivable thing in the song is Jay-Z thinking he can try to rhyme "common" with "monster".

Indolence Mission (DJP), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

It doesn't seem any longer than Kanye or Nicki's verses?

It's shorter than either.

tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

It's basically just ppl doing the same "Jay-Z is old, what business does he have still rapping" routine that's been going on for the past 2 years.
