i feel like al might get some more shit for his picks here cuz there's more of a 'southern rap canon' than an 'alternative rock canon' or, obv, a 'rap/r&b crossover canon' -- interested to see what wins, unless it's "what you know"

Eh, it's 30/20. But only five songs from 2007-09.

the thing i love about these lists from al aside from the great analysis & being reminded of amazing songs that slipped my consciousness over the years is that i don't have to even think about what to listen to this weekend. i've been handed a playlist.

whoops wrong southern rap thread

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 October 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

it was weird to me to look back at trina's billboard numbers -- i think growing up in miami always made me think she was like a huge superstar, which maybe she was on a functional leveln (& maybe her album sales reflect that) but "da baddest bitch" & esp "pull over" & "told y'all" were huge songs when i was a kid so i was kind of shocked to see that they barely had chart numbers

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

if it's being played in public, the "fuckin' niggas in the face" line is a guarantee of half the room whipping round to say "wtf did she just say what i think she did" - i used to play it when i edited my university magazine, much to the chagrin of the indie losers on music desk

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

44. Three 6 Mafia f/ UGK and Project Pat - "Sippin' On Some Syrup" (2000)
43. Soulja Boy Tell 'Em - "Donk" (2008)

this is just rong

trollin trollin trollin we aint slept in weeks (deej), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

obv this list is dope & fun & all that but bcuz no one else is im gonna go in on what seem like the most disagreeable parts -- but yeah just to be clear i think its awesome that he did this & im looking forward to reading all the write ups

trollin trollin trollin we aint slept in weeks (deej), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

4. Petey Pablo - "Raise Up" (2001)

bizarrely overrated imo

feel similarly about 'whisper song'

great canonical top 3 tho

trollin trollin trollin we aint slept in weeks (deej), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

too tired to think of ~omissions~ but off top of head...no pitbull solo singles from his golden period w/lil jon, no crime mob, no "freek-a-leek"...plus a personal southern rap fav that no one else will ever rep for is rasheeda's "georgia peach", such a gorgeous beat

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

i usually try & take up issues w/ al's picks once the poll is over

the big one i disagreed w/ tho was picking "u don't know me" over "asap"

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that too. there are a few folks around here who get like that about 'bring em out'

trollin trollin trollin we aint slept in weeks (deej), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

but these are points that verge on the border between "quirks of taste" & "wtf is he thinking"

does "A Milli" count as "southern rap"

jesus christ, the 00s were amazing for this shit

underrated SCAREosmith albums I have loved (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

i get like that about "bring em out" but at the same time i'd rather places were taken up by less famous artists/songs that might have been forgotten or overlooked, rather than being obligated to cover the many, many classic singles by megastars

def woulda chosen "Danger" or "Shake Ya Ass" over Bouncin' Back as far as Mystikal is concerned, probably more the latter than the former.

my POSSIBLY CONTROVERSIAL policy when making this was to not think of Virginia as part of Southern hip hop, which is why Timbaland and Neptunes are only on here when working w/ rappers from the deep south -- so the forthcoming non-southern rap list will have stuff like "Get Ur Freak On" and "Grindin'"

some dude, Friday, 8 October 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

David Banner's "Like a Pimp" almost got my vote too. what a beat, what delivery...

tbh i have just never been that into "My Block" -- obviously it's a good song and all but i mean wouldn't be anywhere near my top 5 songs off The Fix or anything

My Block is good but I'd say the single chosen for this list is better.

are there people besides jordan and deej who feel really strongly about "ASAP" or think it's one of T.I.'s very best singles and/or better than "U Don't Know Me"? I've never really gotten that sense.

some dude, Friday, 8 October 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

parts of VA are very southern culturally, in a more general sense, but as far as hip hop goes i kind of think of it as vaguely "mid-Atlantic region" along with D.C., Baltimore, Philly, etc.

"In Da Wind" is weird and so-so to me, some people act like it's such a big deal but i barely heard it when it was out, and i was glued to Rap City and my car radio that summer

some dude, Saturday, 9 October 2010 12:24 (fifteen years ago)

btw "bring em out" > "u don't know me" > "motivation" > "asap"

all are classics tho, best singles run from any ti album

love 'in da wind', was gonna bitch about its absence but that list is so loaded it would've been churlish. it was huge on atlanta radio at the time, strong agreement on td as ridiculously strong singles run for a while there. will still bitch about no 'salt shaker' but fucking whisper song being way up there.

my approach w/ these kinds of lists is generally that it's better to trust my gut than second-guess popular opinion, even if that involved occasionally contraristanning for something like "Sittin' Sidewayz" (like, I don't really care about any of the rapping on that or "Still Tippin'," so I went with the one with the beat I like better).

some dude, Saturday, 9 October 2010 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

i don't give care at all about what songs are left off your personal singles list, but it's so hard to believe you don't like the raps on still tippin. the slim thug verse is like the pinnacle of southern rap to me

"Knuck If You Buck" was one of those songs like "Stipp Tippin" or "A Milli" where I knew I'd get shit for excluding it but just don't like it enough -- to me "Get Crunk" is the definitive Lil Jay banger

some dude, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 13:24 (fifteen years ago)

"Get Buck" is serious failed banger status and if I was going to rank all the rappers on this list by, like, enjoyment of their music and respect for their talent and accomplishments, Young Buck would be below Plies and Paul Wall and above probably just a bunch of C-listers from the posse cuts

you know, i think this adventure reveals a real problem in crowd-sourcing.

J0rd searched for the easiest, most accessible versions of this music and the internet provided him with pure garbage. I'm terrified and disgusted that the legacy of most vital music of the 00s is being preserved by a bunch of teenagers that think it's acceptable to listen to "I Don't Give A Fuck" in 96kbps.

interk3llar overdrive (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)

fewer people have computers than you think. a lot of people who love this stuff have the CDs.

goole, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

interk3llar overdrive (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

pretty much every rap song I own is directly from a CD I own....

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

a lot of the most vital music of pre-00s decades was preserved by a tiny number of people with ltd-edition vinyl copies. and this music is still preserved on vinyl and cd (several of my mp3s were originally ripped from cd albums).

i agree that digital archival sucks (and isn't limited to any genre - in grime, a lot of the genre's classic white labels have been pretty much LOST), but just 10 years ago this stuff wouldn't be readily accessible at all - baby steps; i like to think that digital archival is a process.

I mean, I looooove picking up rap CDs, and still do it on the regular. Which is why 2010 mixtape culture kind of drives me nuts. In the back of my head I'm always thinking there's no way I'm gonna be successfully backing up my digital copy of Nicki Minaj's "Beam Me Up Scotty" for 20 or 30 years.

interk3llar overdrive (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

?? not to get all racey classy here but come on, this is hugely popular music consumed by populations that aren't very far forward on the digital curve or whatever, the cds are out there in the millions. the fact that j0rdan s4rge grabbed some shitty bitrate stuff off fileshare doesn't mean much, if you're worried about 'preservation'

goole, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

I'm actually more of a 'I gotta have the physical copy' type person with metal albums, as that's really the genre I'm most passionate about, and I like having the real things. With rap it just so happens that used rap cds get extremely cheap over time so that I acquired most of them cheaply.

But the digital age has basically led to an interesting and annoying trend with metal cds -- underground albums that were prior to the turn of the century, only available in Europe starting getting stateside distribution, and genre availability was at its peak.

In recent years, due to the digital age, metal albums go out of print with alarming frequency, meaning getting proper copies is impossible unless you want to pay obscene prices. Even albums that aren't that old or were only just reissued a few years ago. Which unfortunately means d/ling sometimes truly is the only option, whether it be illegally, or legally through an iTunes-esque provider.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

Like I'm not going to pay $25 for a copy of Mercyful Fate's "Don't Break the Oath" that two years ago I could have had for $15, thank you much.

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

I actually recently talked to someone in Chicago who goes to rap shows and they were telling me that the racial makeup of local depends on whatever neighborhood the show is in. And that kind of goes for New York too. Like a Knitting Factory or Summerstage Slick Rick show will have a totally different racial makeup than one that happens in the Bronx or Queens

But seriously, guys, it doesn't take an enormous leap of faith to imagineer some stats on the racial demographics of the six million people that bought "I Gotta Feelin" and the five million people that bought "Low"

interk3llar overdrive (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

anyway im not doubting that tons of white ppl buy gangsta rap -- thats obvious, tons of white ppl buy lots of diff rap -- but when i hear ppl confidently spout off this stat about how white ppl buy most rap music its like, well maybe just on pure numbers, but representative for our percentage of the population? is it really a huge gap or a small one? & which gangsta rap are we talking about? there are tons of diff kinds. and are we talking about cd sales, or concert tickets, or radio listeners?

in general, i find when Djing that a lot of latino dudes know more gangster rap than white ppl, unless it was a straight up pop track like 'big pimpin' or something. & im not talking about gangster dudes, just ave. bros from pilsen or whatever.

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

there are roughly 6 times as many white people in the U.S. as there are black people. and while black people are definitely more likely to listen to hip hop, whether casually or "seriously" or whatever, i don't think i'd be sticking my neck out too far to posit that black folks probably aren't more than 6 times more likely to listen to rap.

putting the zips together isn't the issue from a time standpoint -- downloading 30 or so individual mp3s takes like 2 hours or so -- but I can't make any guarantees about the bitrates of loose mp3s that I get off "hotfile.com" -- I encourage whiney to rip his high quality mp3s and put em up for download if 128 kbps is eating at his soul -- if not ill do what I can

I am admittedly not an expert on southern hip hop (I know most of these songs but don't really have a deep knowledge of context/history/etc) so can people please discuss why they like this song or why it's special?

To me it's just a really fun, upbeat song from 2 guys who I totally thought were geniuses (less thrilled with their output since then but they're still obviously talented guys) who'd never worked together before, really finding some comfortable common ground between their respective sounds. It was a pretty minor hit at the time, though, I ranked it a bit higher here than conventional wisdom might dictate.

also, seriously, that Cee-Lo album is one of the best albums of the decade. Hands down better than anything Gnarls Barkley put out. RIYL the new Big Boi

I never totally warmed up to that album.

cool, thanks for indulging me. I think maybe I just don't like Cee-Lo that much since I wasn't big on "Fuck You" or any of the Gnarls Barkley songs but I should probably give him another shot.

Def download that album and report back. Was on my Pazz & Jop ballot and still gets lots of play from me. Def like the sweet middle ground between Goodie Mob and the full-on pop of Gnarls

Def. prefer some dude's ranking to the vote outcome.

Some of that comes down to how the ILX machine has secretly ranked the zero votes tho.

yeah it's truly one of the great mysteries of ILX how the order gets determined for ties in a poll, doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it
