what a year

carles in carge (s1ocki), Friday, 15 October 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

this list could be worse

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 October 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

but obviously, from a "stands the test of time" POV, it's gotta be:

Irving Berlin with Celine Dion, Hillary Clinton and Leann Rhimes – God Bless America

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 October 2010 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

this was charles aaron's list right? last selection was always a joke.

balls, Friday, 15 October 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

oh ya uh i was joking too

carles in carge (s1ocki), Friday, 15 October 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

was the "11-13" portion of his lists also always a joke?

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 October 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

I thought he was serious since this was prolly written within the month after 9-11.

billstevejim, Friday, 15 October 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

"My Red Hot Car" is really good, so no 11-13 isn't a joke.

billstevejim, Friday, 15 October 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

1. Missy Elliott – Get Ur Freak on
2. Madonna – Don’t Tell Me
3. Daft Punk – Digital Love
4. Nelly – Ride Wit Me

Nothing wrong with any of these.

balls, Friday, 15 October 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

kinda bizarre that 'is this it' was only #18 on their albums list

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 October 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

The albums list is a shittier one than the year suggests.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 15 October 2010 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

some serious 90s hangover on there

balls, Friday, 15 October 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

Dont Tell me?? Wow that's amazing. Even more so than the U2 cover.

piscesx, Friday, 15 October 2010 03:05 (fifteen years ago)

I did a youtube and grooveshark search for "God Bless America" with that exact assortment of singers and nothing came up. I don't think it actually exists, so I'm going to assume it's terrible.

Besides that, I don't especially dislike any song on this list.

billstevejim, Friday, 15 October 2010 03:06 (fifteen years ago)

Well that didn't make any sense.. I meant to say: I don't think an actual physical release of this song exists, and I'm going to assume that I wouldn't enjoy it.

billstevejim, Friday, 15 October 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

staind song kinda rules tbh but only if u listen to the live version w/ fred durst going 'this is the real muthafuckin deal yall!!!!'

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Friday, 15 October 2010 04:38 (fifteen years ago)

Never thought I'd get a chance to vote for "I'm Like A Bird" on an ILM poll but here it is!

She was her generation's Regina Spektor.

"Ride Wit Me" vs "Freak On" vs "Resolution" in some perpetual 3-way arm wrestle in my head.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Friday, 15 October 2010 06:54 (fifteen years ago)

resolution tho

ENBBQ (The Reverend), Friday, 15 October 2010 07:03 (fifteen years ago)

"Ride Wit Me" is the one that's actually banging loudest in my head right now but for once I'm not gonna vote for instant gratification.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Friday, 15 October 2010 07:04 (fifteen years ago)

Actually "Ante Up" is nearly thereabouts too.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Friday, 15 October 2010 07:05 (fifteen years ago)

The baby boomers have defined everything once and for all (Dorianlynskey), Friday, 15 October 2010 08:13 (fifteen years ago)

"young, fresh n new" was never released in the US, right? at least wanderland wasn't. kudos to spin for putting it in the list then. (it's also not even the best song on the album.)

were staind nu-metal? it was so massive back then that they might have felt compelled to include it out of a sense of populism (i can't actually remember this song, for which i am grateful).

lol nikka costa, remember when she was being hyped to be a thing.

borad.crutial.org (crüt), Friday, 15 October 2010 08:28 (fifteen years ago)

Nu-metal was a weird period for music mags because very few writers seemed to like it but the editors felt obliged to reflect its popularity. Says the man who once had to write a cover story on Limp Bizkit. Say what you like about landfill indie but at least it cleared away those mooks.

The baby boomers have defined everything once and for all (Dorianlynskey), Friday, 15 October 2010 08:28 (fifteen years ago)

"Outside" is actually a kinda decent song!

borad.crutial.org (crüt), Friday, 15 October 2010 08:29 (fifteen years ago)

I think that Aerosmith song may be the worst thing on this list

borad.crutial.org (crüt), Friday, 15 October 2010 08:32 (fifteen years ago)

well it is, clearly, but i like it anyway

contenderizer, Friday, 15 October 2010 08:33 (fifteen years ago)

if there are votes for a song other than "ante up" i am going to start seriously doubting people's abilities to identify the best song out of a list of songs

Ante Up is only for ppl who go hard

Ride Wit Me is an acceptable answer if you're super chill

Get Ur Freak On is an acceptable answer if you have already sold your soul

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 15 October 2010 10:13 (fifteen years ago)

"Ante Up" is the best on this list, but it came out in 2000--I remember hearing it on the radio in October of 2000, which may have been after Spin's idiotic cut-off point.

Drastic times require what? Drastic measures! Who said that? T (President Keyes), Friday, 15 October 2010 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

1. We Need A Resolution
2. Independent Woman
3. Digital Love
4. Romeo
5. Get Yr Freak On

BIG GAP

6. My Red Hot Car
7. Ante Up
8-20 - Who gives a shit
21. God Bless America
22. Staind

Matt DC, Friday, 15 October 2010 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, I didn't notice IZZO in there, that would go just below Get Yr Freak On.

Did they just fail to notice The Strokes or The White Stripes in 2001 or did they really think Staind, Stephen Malkmus and Weezer were better?

Matt DC, Friday, 15 October 2010 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

That confused me too. For comparison, NME's Top 20:

1. Missy Elliott – Get Ur Freak On
2. Kylie Minogue – Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
3. The Strokes – The Modern Age EP
4. Andrew W.K. – Party Hard
5. The White Stripes – Hotel Yorba
6. Outkast – Ms Jackson
7. The Strokes – Hard To Explain
8. Starsailor – Good Souls
9. Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood
10. Mop – Cold As Ice
11. Destiny’s Child – Bootylicious
12. Spiritualized – Stop Your Crying
13. Squarepusher – My Red Hot Car
14. Super Furry Animals – Juxtaposed With You
15. Roots Manuva – Witness (One Hope)
16. Destiny’s Child – Survivor
17. Fischer-Spooner - Emerge
18. New Order – Crystal
19. S Club 7 – Don’t Stop Movin’
20. The Avalanches – Since I Left You

Their finest song possibly!

B/w this and choosing "Video" in the other thread I feel I don't know you right now.

i was going to ask you about hating "video" but i couldn't be bothered - i wasn't repping for it particularly, it's just nice enough, i just hated the other options

i really really hate the perkiness of "romeo"s melody and the cheesy oh-oh-ohs.

Basement Jaxx
"Romeo"
[XL/Astralwerks; 2001]

A criticism you sometimes hear about Basement Jaxx tracks is that they're too busy. Not unfair-- except that leaves out how hyperactivity can inflate a fine song into something fantastic. Imagine a version of "Romeo" played totally straight-- a post-Winehouse retro-soul belter. It wouldn't be too bad, but it wouldn't be on this list. "Romeo" needs its touches of mixing desk dementia: The way the stomped emphases at the end of Kele Le Roc's lines set off pinball-combo beats all around your earspace; the way the middle eight dissolves into swoon and flutter; the husky work-gang chants. And so when Le Roc cuts loose it doesn't sound stagey-- more a wholly understandable reaction to all the craziness and tension the Jaxx are pumping in. Frustration has rarely sounded so gleeful. --Tom Ewing

Did they just fail to notice The Strokes or The White Stripes in 2001 or did they really think Staind, Stephen Malkmus and Weezer were better?

In fairness, everything is better than The Strokes.

God this list makes me puke. I'm so angry at this arrangement of songs that I can barely see straight. And I'm seeing red. Holy mackerel, I want to kick the makers of this list in the testicles and then piss on their stinky heads.

How could they leave out song x? And how could they include song y? And holy fuck, the nerve of them to rank song z ahead of song b. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Not to add to the whining but We Need a Resolution instead of Rock the Boat?
The rest of the list reflects 2001 well, though. Loads of Urban Pop on the charts that year.

Ante Up is the best song of the decade and possibly my lifetime (the final "nigga" at the end is so triumphant!), so of course I voted for Jenny & the Ess-Dog. I was thinking about it earlier this week, for some reason. I can't even remember the tune, but back then me and my friends would call each other ___-Dog because of it and it was kind of a funny thing, LOL.

I don't really understand the niceties and nuances of debates over calling people out by their not-real-names, so let me just say:

"The Real Slim Shady" > "Without Me" > "My Name Is" > "Kim" > "Stan" > (a good chunk of other stuff from the first two albums, and several tracks from the third) > "Lose Yourself".

And also that Alfred's permastanning for the determinedly middling "Don't Tell Me" always puzzles me.

As an atheist, I think that people who believe in M.O.P. and people who believe in Malkmus are about equal asshole as far as I'm concerned. It's just two sides of the same coin.

"don't tell me" is a dope song and better than any she's released since but claiming it as her second-best ever is ridiculous imo

i didn't know lex was a daft punk hater but i guess it makes sense

All the singles from Confessions are better too IMO.

Tim F, Thursday, 21 October 2010 06:31 (fifteen years ago)

I think Alfred was saying it was her best second-single, rather than second-best song.

Still, "Deeper and Deeper" is her best second-single surely.

"don't tell me" isn't something i'd go out of my way to stan for but it's way better than middling - it's very likable, and at the time was quite addictive. charging madonna with jumping on to a contemporaneous bandwagon is odd, hell0 her entire career, but the stuttering loops work well for the song, esp with a relatively simple, organic arrangement that doesn't scream ~futuristic~ in any way (which the r&b productions of the time that tim mentions tended to do).

"die another day" and "hung up" are def better. i've genuinely forgotten what the other singles from confessions actually were apart from "sorry"!

still fairly challopsy given some of her other second-singles!

deeper and deeper > burning up > take a bow > papa don't preach > express yourself > ray of light > don't tell me > material girl > sorry > causing a commotion > hollywood > give it 2 me > don't cry for me argentina > hanky panky

wow "hollywood" did not come last

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 October 2010 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

& if you count "Gambler" as the 2nd single from the Vision Quest soundtrack, I'd say that's better too.

prolego, Thursday, 21 October 2010 08:16 (fifteen years ago)

Okay this is true, I just think it's middling for Madonna (if you exclude American Life and Hard Candy from the bell curve at any rate).

i wasn't so much complaining that it rips from R&B (that's fine, even savvy if done right) as saying it's not exactly startling in context.

but the stuttering loops work well for the song, esp with a relatively simple, organic arrangement that doesn't scream ~futuristic~ in any way (which the r&b productions of the time that tim mentions tended to do).

Give me "Someone To Call My Lover".

Tim F, Thursday, 21 October 2010 10:53 (fifteen years ago)

"someone to call my lover" was still about a year off when "don't tell me" was released, iirc?

"middling for madonna" - idk, it's one of the best tracks on its parent album, which may not be madonna's best album qua album but certainly isn't a bad album. actually the more i think about it, the more madonna doing a straight-up "likable" song is itself quite rare, especially from the late 80s on.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 October 2010 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah but it's a much better version of the same idea yeah.

And I just find something so very try-hard about "Don't Tell Me", the lyrics/vocals more than the beat actually. Good song but compared to the other songs in this list it's just...

Tim F, Thursday, 21 October 2010 11:37 (fifteen years ago)

america vs lynyrd sknynrd

middling madonna is still pretty phenomenal, basically agree w/ lex's rankings (would move a few tracks around but nothing makes me go 'whut'), 'deeper and deeper' -> 'sorry' = fantastic, 'causing a commotion' = middling, 'hollywood' -> 'hanky panky' = o dear

balls, Thursday, 21 October 2010 11:42 (fifteen years ago)

I would shift "Don't Tell Me" down to below "Sorry". "Sorry" wouldn't win it in song terms but the JLC dub is so amazing and is what I think of when I think of the song so.

Tim F, Thursday, 21 October 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)

is that the man with guitar mix? (that's also JLC, don't know if he did more than one remix of it.) anyway counting remixes surely means "hollywood" rockets up the list and into fantastic territory thanks to JLC's remix of that...

"don't tell me" is the opposite of try-hard for me, it's pretty casual and easy-going - i mean, lest we forget, this is a single that came after "MUSIC MAKES THE BOURGEOISIE AND THE REBEL" - how are unremarkable lyrics about love (unremarkable w/r/t their perspective rather than their quality) more try-hard than that? (try-hard not a pejorative there though.)

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 October 2010 11:51 (fifteen years ago)

It's try hard to be casual and easy going authentic natural though. The pompous trash of "Music" sounds more actually-Madonna to me.

Yeah I think it's the man with guitar remix I'm talking about. The one that sounds like an endless wave crashing over you.

Tim F, Thursday, 21 October 2010 11:59 (fifteen years ago)

Basically I don't trust Madonna with authenticity moves now. I loved Ray of Light when it came out but can't listen to it now, I want Madonna to sound out of touch with her "inner" "self" because she's more real that way.

Tim F, Thursday, 21 October 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

Don't Tell Me is just a bit boring really, which is the worst thing a Madonna single can be.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 October 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry Matt I constantly forget to say: when I am posting drunk can you just replace my posts with yours from now on.

Yeah, I meant Best Second Single, on which I wrote something a few years ago.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 October 2010 12:21 (fifteen years ago)

(good poll idea either way)

Don't Tell Me
Sorry
Deeper and Deeper
Take a Bow
Burning Up

Always disliked "Ray of Light" as a production.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 October 2010 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

OMG that is all wrong Alf! But for "Deeper & Deeper" being in the middle you could turn it exactly upside down!

Tim F, Thursday, 21 October 2010 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

btw these are all 8-10 pt rankings.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 October 2010 12:48 (fifteen years ago)

wow "hollywood" did not come last

haha! I recognize that that song is terrible but I still enjoy it (and pretty much that entire album) anyway.

Actually, since "Die Another Day" is on that album, would "American Life" count as the second single instead of "Hollywood"?

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Thursday, 21 October 2010 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

i remember for awhile for some reason i thought thomas tallis was eric bachmann

I have to say that was my favorite argument I ever had w/anybody cause u were mega-pissed @ me and you kept calling me "eric"

gotta take credit for that one, good times

da croupier, Thursday, 21 October 2010 14:09 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, since "Die Another Day" is on that album, would "American Life" count as the second single instead of "Hollywood"?

i did dither over this! that would technically have been right, and would also mean "crazy in love" and "deja vu" were second-singles.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 October 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

american life has quite a few (ok, a few) really great songs on it - nowhere near the failure of both vision and execution that hard candy was

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 October 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

HC had vision?

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 October 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

i think madonna was going for something pretty definite with it? also pretty boring. and badly done.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 October 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

outside of ilx i think "Don't Tell Me" would prob be a consensus pick for best Madonna single of the last decade.

underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Thursday, 21 October 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

It's certainly the only one besides "Hung Up" and "4 Minutes" they might recognize.

Um... "Music"?

Also "Die Another Day"?

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Thursday, 21 October 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

Always forget "Music" is from this decade. but:

Also "Die Another Day"?

That song is probably forgotten, at least on radio here, whereas I still hear the aforementioned singles.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 October 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

i personally like "don't tell me" WAY more than any of the confessions singles or anything else since then, really

why haven't we polled this yet?
