Kyle. Levon doesn't nearly do for me what he apparently does for so many.
― The Flamoboyant Magic of Gunter and Ernst (EDB), Thursday, 21 October 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)
The Water Is Fine/Worx of Art EP's are a pretty good introduction to Hall.
― Number None, Thursday, 21 October 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)
i'll take levon. he can build such a strong feeling of tension sometimes (late night jam, 1000 miles from home). maybe too many releases in 2009 though, and very quiet this year so far - no releases afaik? my favorite is six figures ep.
― ¸¸.·´¯´·he'd sail across the bubbling waves·.¸¸.·´¯ (another al3x), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)
i think i'd take levon too. he just does an amazing job of taking chicago style boompty bump and infusing it with basic channel throb and hiss, or berghain style bassy flex. his housiest productions (air raid, love technique, late night jam) are so raw it's crazy, they have that crazy slapped together feel where each sound just rubs up against all the others at the freshest angles, metallic drum reverb an sighing hi hats and bleepy, dirty synths forming groaning, shuddering formations of funkiness
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 21 October 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)
levon's RA is awesome but its all ive heard by him. love halls singles
― plax (ico), Friday, 22 October 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)
hes also way less "straight up"
levon
― balls, Friday, 22 October 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)
I also feel like I've never fully experienced Levon, having heard him mostly at home on monitor speakers, where it sounds small and compact, whereas hearing it on a proper rig in a dingy basement at 5 in the morning would be entirely different. Until I do experience that, his productions will continue to not really interest me (although this is just furthering the realization that I'm not big on this kind of "purist" techno), in that it is frankly really straight up.
Kyle, though, even if he's not going to blow me away has a huge amount of personality in his productions that I admire, that and a willingness to try all sorts of stuff out, and a certain enthusiasm about music past present and future, I guess. I think this is very characteristic of the young crop of producers that are active now (cf. N Jaar, Floating points, etc. I actually started a thread on this once but no one responded), and which I approve of.

way way way into levon these days, still love kyle but levon has gradually changed my understanding of how tough and jacking and dubby house can be while still being "trad" house
― the late great, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)
Interesting thread since last NYE I saw Kyle and Levon DJ right next to each other. Kyle was amazing, Levon was a disaster.
― EDB, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)
ooh, disaster?
― toandos, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 19:55 (thirteen years ago)
OK not a disaster, just... not fortunate. After an hour and a half of KMFH bringing the jams and generally delivering the most feel-good of feel-good house vibes, Levon took things down from like, 84 to 67, playing nothing but dull and sparse techno through, right away losing the crowd and never getting them back. By the time he started to generate any sort of heat his set was over (at which point Ame brought it back up to like, 91).
― EDB, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
production-wise levon is not putting any feet wrong anywhere

listening to the burrell brothers thing on rush hour, would not at all be surprised to find out this stuff was a big influence on levon (and the rest of the UG quality crew at that)
― the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)
Haven't given the Fabric mix a listen yet, but in response to the original thread title, I take Levon above and beyond KH in terms of productions at this point. Kyle may be playful and all over the place, which I typically like, but his stuff doesn't even come close to hitting me like Levon's.
― matt2, Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

I've only seen him DJ once and he wasn't that great. His Fabric mix is awesome doe
― paolo, Friday, 27 September 2013 09:58 (twelve years ago)
I've seen Levon DJ twice. Most recently (on NYE) he wasn't great but afaik he had some personal stuff to deal with. The first time though was one of the best and most interesting sets I've seen. The way he DJed - he made it seem like percussive elements of the tracks were just on the verge of "falling apart" while working incredibly effectively. I'm not really doing it justice with the crappy description, but it was very exciting.

― JEFF 22 (Matt P), Saturday, 28 September 2013 07:45 (twelve years ago)
the sound could've been a little better, i got some distortion when i tried to push the bass a bit too much, but honestly the space itself was incredible; just exactly what you'd want, straight up fog-filled concrete bunker basement shit, with blue and red pulsing light. the guy that put it all together does a great job. there were actually dudes "crowdsurfing"??

Levon Vincent (Official_Page)My friends, my career has gone well these past few years. I have debts and a lot of overhead these days, but I am working hard and I'm very proud to say I have achieved a situation where I have steady work. Things are optimistic for me for at least a year or two. I am ready to start sponsoring / apprenticing people. Maybe one musician at a time. Let's develop something. A 'tourist' can live legally in Berlin for 90 days. I want to begin supporting an up-and-comer for 90 day segments, essentially I will pay your rent for 3 months in Berlin, likely a room for rent in a flat where we know music-making will be allowed. We have to find one. We got resources and a community. I got a little bit of kit to kick down too. Monitors, at least. We'll get you sorted out. And I'll check in with you once a month or whatever. Maybe I can offer some guidance too. Basically I want to facilitate your 24/7 music making. And your partying, too. As long as that's musical. Please send some of your demos, (2 songs only), via soundcloud links to levonvinc✧✧✧@hotm✧✧✧.c✧✧. Subject "bootcamp"If I can find someone to believe in, then I can help care for your living expense while you take a small time out of your life to focus solely on your own craft. 3 months should be enough time to learn a thing or two. Think of it as bootcamp. You must be completely committed to your craft. Anything else is secondary, and I'll know immediately from the first beat of your demo so don't front! I'm looking forward to hearing some new world sounds. Thank you for participating.

I wonder how this mentoring would work given that nobody really sounds like Levon - the way his melodies form and sounds scrape together is so unique.
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 5 December 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)
honestly have trouble imagining how something like that would work, though i agree it's laudable that l.v. wants to pay it forward and throw it out to "everyone" for a chance.

― toby, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 07:40 (ten years ago)
"launch ramp to tha sky" is ridiculously good. it's quite rare to hear a house album that's so lean and dancefloor-focused but where the distinct character of each track immediately comes through. brilliant album
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 09:50 (ten years ago)
everyone is killing it in 2015
It's a lot more dubby and (one or two tracks excepted) less jacking than I'd anticipated based on his Fabric mix and having heard various singles pop up in mixes.
His sense of timing is ridiculously good, other producers who build up slowly tend to bring additional melodic elements either all at once or with fairly even spacing, Levon manages to keep a track percolating for a really long time before bringing in other elements in quick succession, so you get these sudden giddy spiralling moments in what had previous seemed an enjoyably functional banger.

Has much better high points when he hits the spot (Black Magic, Deep Love, the Efdemin reshape, where is the love) and would definitely play ahead of Hall or Vincent for me, who don't bring enough vibe or presence to the game for me. But can't guarantee you 20 goals a season like Kelley, Herbert, Noel or Kincy could in those great Ajax sides of the 90s.
