We've taken on years. We've taken on decades. We've even taken on entire genres. The next logical step is to take on a century. Ambitious, right? Yes. Stupid too? Probably. But I think it could be pretty fun. JJ Cale to JJ Fad, Sister Rosetta Tharpe to The Sisters of Mercy, The Jackson 5 to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, etc. etc. Viva variety!

*You can nominate 20 (twenty) tracks of your choosing. Singles or non-singles.
*You can do this until midnight est on Friday, November 12th. That's two weeks from right now.
*You can't veto anyone else's nomination except in cases where it's not a recording from the 20th century.

If 20 seems like too few nominations, suck it up. Someone else will probably take care of most of the songs you can't nominate yourself.

Well, I don't think Louis Armstrong would really give a shit one way or another, but I didn't want to see Armstrong's legacy reduced to just West End Blues. And I've been listening to Armstrong rather obsessively in the last two months, and discriminating between the various levels of greatness in the above songs is kind of beyond me at the moment.

I was leaning toward a more freeform voting procedure, kind of like Moka's shoegaze poll was. Like, 800 points (or some other amount) that can be split up any way you want with the caveat being you can only give one track 50 points at the most.

Pretty much most of the tunes I'd consider necessary are there. I know it's more of an album genre but would love to see some more classical music love. We're still lacking essential opera songs and ubiquitious pieces like say Carl Orff's 'O Fortuna'.

I really like the VOTING DAY idea too, but also fear it would not work - but if we turn it into an ELECTION SPECIAL and trail it well in advance, who knows...

Johnny, you can't limit ballots to forty. It's got to be a hundred. Picking twenty to nominate is ridiculous enough but at least you can hope that others will pick up the slack. Can't do that when voting.

I have to limit the ballots to 40 choices. I'm not a computer, I'm a man. If every ballot that came in had 80 or 100 choices, I'd never be able to eat, sleep or function outside of entering votes into a spreadsheet. 40 is plenty of room if you're honest with yourself and only vote for what really matters the most to you.

As for the 20 nominations cap, that's just so the master list isn't unwieldy and full of chaff. It makes it easier for me to keep up and there's less of a chance I'll miss a nomination. IMPORTANT: On the final day of nominations, I'll open it up for an additional 10 nominations from everyone.

I was idly considering my 20 nominations, but there are already 20 things I'd vote for on the noms list and sure to be more later, so it's kind of sad thinking up amazing tracks I want to vote for knowing that I won't be able to vote for all of them. But it's also nice to see how many of the first things that sprang to mind are already listed, so...

What!? 40 votes only!? NO JOHNNY! I think you suggested that maybe you'll do a similar rating system that the one I used on the shoegaze poll. It worked wonders on the shoegaze poll when I did the recount but it wont do on this particular poll. We need at least 50 or 60 votes. I suggest the following rating system:

60 votes - 1200 points - maximum points per song 50, minimum points per song 20 - that way the least you can vote for are 24 songs with 50 points and the most, 60 songs with 20 points each - and everything in between. If you need help managing the ballots I'll be glad to help.

J0rdan S. and I used 40 votes on the 2005-09 albums/tracks polls, and I used 30 votes on the alt. 70's album poll last year (iirc?) and those turned out just fine. The voting was enthusiastic and the results were great. I mean, no matter how many votes each person gets, there's never gonna be enough of Tuomas's favorite music in a poll to make him happy, so we don't even try anymore.

They did work great, yes. If you're going that way, I have a request: don't make it 40-1, make it 50-11 or similar. It's kind of silly to agonise over the last few if they're not getting enough votes to make any sort of difference.

My two cents on the points issue: even though I think the system Moka used for the shoegaze poll is more versatile. It is a pain in the ass keeping track of points and not going over the maximum and stuff. Also, as was clear after the poll results were in, not everyone's ballot was consistent with this. So my vote is to just go for a fixed points thing with the option to do ordered and unordered lists.

Incidentally, perhaps if more choices means a hideous amount of collation, and given that Johnny Fever is indeed not a computer, then maybe voters would be willing to enter their own column of data into a pre-configured "ballot paper" table/spreadsheet. That only requires direct cut+paste of a column of data into JF's master record at the end. I'm sure most voters could download and submit a small spreadsheet or table. Makes basic error-checking simple too. Just thinking out loud...

On a related note: how automated are the tools people use for these polls? Given a list of nominated tracks it should be trivial to write a script that checks a submission against the list, reports any discrepancies and adds the votes to the tally. That should remove most of the gruntwork.

To clarify: by "trivial" I mean it shouldn't take long for someone who's used to scripting in Perl/Python/whatever, not that if you can't do it you're a moran.

lol when I read Dan's list I felt very dumb for a moment about "West Side Story" – I know that musical so well, how come I don't recognize that song? I feel like musicals have really produced America's "pop standards," although I know this is ridic. I wish there were more songs from musicals on here but it's also this "pop standards" feeling that makes me feel like you can't just nom the whole musical.

Agreed. Singular songs from musicals have been recorded a hundred times over by different artists w/o having to record the whole musical whence they come. If Dan wants the whole of West Side Story nominated, he's going to have to do it song-by-song.

Ok so it looks like it's really easy to create a form like the one from the 09 poll, and Google will automatically put each submission into a spreadsheet. This means the organiser doesn't have to go through a hundred submissions in his/her inbox. But as far as I can see, if you enter a paragraph of text in the form (e.g. one vote per line) the lines don't get split up. Google Spreadsheets provides Javascript functionality which I guess can handle this but it might take some time to work out the API (anyone done this before?).

Here's one hacky way to do it: use Google forms to create the spreadsheet - at this point each voter's submission is just one line in the table. Export this table to a text file. Run a Perl script that splits the votes for each voter, checks them against the master list and outputs a final spreadsheet that can be read in to Excel or whatever. This isn't very elegant but I could do the scripting part without much hassle.

There are probably 5000 better ways of doing this than what I just sketched, so do jump in if you know about this kind of thing!

Yep, that should be ok. The final output could be as simple as four columns:

Artist/Track Position TotalVotes TotalFirstPlaceVotes

with one row per track and everything added up automatically.

Or it could output a more detailed spreadsheet with each row corresponding to an individual vote for a single track, and then you can run whatever's the standard Excel magic to tally things up.

Or it could output both. Or something else completely.

Computer magic!!! I continue to be amazed at people who know scripting.

More details in the interest of disclosure:

One reason the method is hacky is that it does all the checking offline - if a user enters an invalid (i.e. probably misspelled) name he/she won't get any feedback or chance to correct it, and the organiser who's running the script has to decide what to do with it.

Another reason is that it involves exporting and importing files from/to spreadsheets and running some Perl - you can't make everything happen by just clicking a button. I can imagine a nice online app that would do everything automatically but I don't have any experience in Web stuff or the time to set it up.

Anyway, despite inherent hackiness it should work and can probably handle any functionality that's needed.

I think one problem here is that a lot of jazz standards as well classical pieces and showtunes have a kazillion different recordings. Even if you mention the specific performer, it's perfectly possible the same artist/orchestra has recorded the same composition many times. So are we voting for the composition or the performance? I guess with classical pieces it might be valid to vote for the composition, but certainly not with jazz tunes. So when people nominate an oft-covered tune, I think they should specify which recording they're talking about.

Yeah I was thinking about this earlier. I wondered about tracks that are popular standards - they deserve a nom, but whose version? Like, even "Strange Fruit" is known both for the Billie Holliday and the Nina Simone version for eg.

that's pointless in a poll like this though. do we want to split votes not only between compositions, but performances by a given artist? are people really gonna nominate 7 different recordings of the same song, by roughly the same people? to what end? i think that composition/performer = a unit of sufficient specificity, especially when we're treating treating all musical forms as equal.

The further back you go, the more this arises. Also in Brazil, where the tradition of popular standards seems to be as alive as ever. With 'Sit Down, You're Rocking The Boat' I don't even know if there is a canonical recorded version, so I just attributed it to the composer.

On the whole I'd rather not split between different versions of the same tune when it comes to adding up - we don't count remixes separately in other polls, I don't think.

Well, a track is a recording. A song is a song. Since this is a "tracks" poll, we're probably voting for actual recordings. However, when it comes to something like you mention (a jazz artist having several recorded versions of the same composition, or a symphonic piece being recorded numerous times by numerous orchestras), it's probably best just to nominate it by name. Later, if it gets voted into the final poll results, people can discuss and endorse which particular performances are the greatest.
