We might as well get this over with now, if indeed we move over here instead of just vacationing....

Me: Michaelangelo Matos, 27, freelance music writer/critic/journalist in NYC. I like lots and lots of stuff. I'm medium height and stocky, like strawberries and chocolate eclairs and fried calamari, haven't gone to the movies in far too long, get stressed fairly easy but maintain it pretty well, like baseball but haven't paid close attention to it in years, and love my new hometown, where I've lived a year and a half now.

Hope that helps some....

M Matos, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 19:29 (twenty-two years ago) link

Disco fan. I paint white stripes on black zebras, black stripes on white zebras, and black-and-white stripes on plain zebras. I played the lead in a college production of "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" in 1936.

Originator of pointless C/D threads about bands only he is actually interested in and even then he'll be lucky if he remembers them a week later. Writes for CTCL every now and then. Single as four-x. No, those last two aren't mutually inclusive... tssch...

Hater of drama students, Oxbridge students, and those studying drama at Oxbridge. Looks a bit like Danny Baker. Sadly.

25, live in Seattle, Yankees fan, perl programmer. Studied studio art (oh, my parents loved that one) and CS in college, so I'm completely unqualified to write anything about music. Despite that, I write a dorky music blog that Tom linked to from NYLPM yesterday (wow!).
I'm a big fan of the tiny doughnut shop in Pike Place Market, right in between the newstand where I sometimes buy ridiculously expensive British music magazines and the flying fish.

I need to include my poem.

I doubt that RuPaul, tall and feminy

Has lips as gay as sea anemone

I think that I shall never see a better poem that both (1) resembles that awful Joyce Kilmer poem about trees, and (2) has a rhyme for "sea anemone."

I'm 48, live in central Denver about a 20-minute walk south of the main library. I write (google my name and you'll find some of it). I don't know if the phrase "rock critic" describes very well what I do; some of what I do, maybe. By the way, anyone who posts here is a writer, and a rock critic.

I most certainly will NOT defend you, because Gene are and have always been a bunch of talentless bastard pricks who think they are delicate and full of intelligent passion, but have the grace of a rotting elephant snout and the deftness and general ability to make 'beautiful' music in the same sense that Our Current President has the ability to make independent decisions without lobbyists. Steve Mason deserves a smack in the face and Rossiter couldn't have gone bald quickly enough for me, and their current audience here in LA represent a strain of Anglophilic desperation I wouldn't associate with in the slightest. DIE DIE DIE.

Apologies if I am not clear on this point. Did I mention I hate Gene?

36 year old, aspiring salsero, so I listen to lots of salsa and Latin music (actually my collection is still pretty small). Also still excited by Arabic music, which I've been listening to for almost ten years now, and have plenty more to hear in that area, mostly old recordings. (And if I ever start collecting Qur'anic recitation recordings, that could get pretty unwieldy.) Sometimes consider Sun Ra as a genre category of his own. Have a weakness for pop music from my childhood (late 60's to end of the 70's). Like many people here, I have also listened pretty widely in other areas, which I won't list this time around. Meanwhile though, I am slowly falling behind the times, slowly losing track of both pop music (outside of Latin music) and of more underground territory.

There are some bio info, MP3's, and pictures here. I only ever post about Rush (I teach guitar now - it's in the contract) but I'm more open-minded than I make myself out to be. I basically have the music taste of your standard Indo-Canadian who grew up loving classic rock (via hair metal), took classical guitar lessons, went Sonic Youth mad and tried to like other indie, ended up studying modern composition, checked out the Montreal free improv scene, and came out at the end of it so drug-damaged as to love nothing more than to sing along to Styx (Fuck, do they have other stuff that sounds like "Miss America"?) and Heart. At the moment, I'm hit particularly hard by the Byrds' "Eight Miles High". I never appreciated it so much before. To think I used to prefer the Husker Du version. I met some of you in New York last year but I'm nicer now, I promise.

I'm Ronan, you may have noticed I am mainly a dance music fan, I'm a Journalism student and I live in Dublin, I tend to come on here and enthuse about tunes or get snarky when dance music comes up in conversation. But it's nothing personal.....honestly.

At the moment I'm sitting in my house thinking a hamburger would be good before work.

Oh all right. 25 years old, born and raised in NYC, live there now. I've lived (over varying stretches of time) in Portland, New Orleans, Boston, Rome (Italy), and upstate New York, and I've been back in Brooklyn for a few years. "I write doodads, 'cuz it's a doodad kind of town" (Dorothy Parker). Favorite music: the punky stuff, the German stuff, the Dylan stuff. I like Fugazi less than I used to and I like the Clash more than I used to. Altered Images' "Don't Talk To Me About Love" may be my favorite pop single ever. I edit this.

I haven't seen a NASCAR race, but my dad once dragged me to a sprint car race. Because the track was so small, the noise and fumes were so intense that it caused my stomach to go into convulsions and I spent the majority of the race hiding under the stands. Oddly, I've since inherited his copy of an old Capitol record with nothing but the sounds of drag racing, with a narrator commenting on what's happening. Huh.

I drink too much too. The black stuff. My gut is becoming a worry. I live in London and love music, especially early Dylan and Johnny Cash and modern stuff as well, eg. Silver Jews. I play guitar with not outstanding results. Seem not to be able to help affecting a broken southern drawl, which suits me better than camp English. I write for a living but not about music. I'm glad I don't have to write about music for a living cause the best I can do is an impressionistic jumble. You have been warned.

Love 60's orch-pop, 70's power pop, 80's new wave pop, 90's indie pop. Watch way too much hockey and VH1 Classic. My clothes are black but my bread is brown.

I really liked song 11 on the new Gene record and saw Altered Images' "Don't Talk To Me About Love" video on VH1 Classic last month.

I guess I've been hanging around here long enough to introduce myself...

I'm Tuomas Alho from Helsinki, Finland. I'm twenty-three going on twenty-four, and I study at the Helsinki University, majoring in Third World studies (ie. trying to save the world). What else... I've listened to electronic music and hip hop ever since I was a teenager, and I've never liked rock. Later on, I've expanded my horizons to jazz, funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian music etc. Nowadays I like almost anything with a strong rhythm and no distorted guitars.

I'm not an active InterWeb user (I've never owned a computer), so you won't see me here too often. Oh, and I do have strong political views (I'm an anarchist/vegan/conscientious objector), but I never preach. I guess that's it. You seem to be a nice bunch of people, glad to be here.

One more thing: could someone please tell me how to make my typing appear in italic or bold. I have no idea how it's done.

I am as some may know, Tom, and am 21. Currently an undergraduate in English at Cambridge University... Born in Wigan 27.9.1982, but have lived in Sunderland since I was about 3. I'm not entirely sure where I'm headed in the future, but writing of some sort or even possibly music, which I play (and sometimes record) in a modest capacity at present. :)
Listening to music is of course a passion: from Fats Waller to the Bonzo Dog Band to Todd Rundgren to Aphex Twin and Abba... so much really, in all fields and meadows of music. I've a strong current interest in all eras of the UK charts, music hall recordings and its influence, and as ever, Englishness and the importance of 'place' in pop music.
I'm deeply interested in television, film, politics, theatre and literature also.

Greetings - Finally took the plunge about a month-&-a-half ago. I've always appreciated the camaraderie, information-sharing, and humor that generally goes on at this site.

Age: North of 40. Rapidly becoming an anachronism technologically (still buy cd's, have never owned an mp3 player, much less an iPod). Married. Live in WA State/Puget Sound area (daily ferry commute to Seattle). Not currently following my bliss, just paying the bills. Stopped stuffing shims in my generation gap, and have been trusting that the kids are alright, without trying to keep up with it all.

First concert: The Police & the Fleshtones, SF Cow Palace, 1982. Latest one: Yo La Tengo, end of October.

Random trivia: After seeing the film 'You Can Count on Me', a number of friends (& my wife) independently declared the uncanny resemblance in look, voice, & gestures I shared with director Kenneth Lonergan, who made a cameo as a priest in the movie.

Cheers!
