John Talabot

I think this guy deserves his own thread, especially since winter is coming up and we could do with a blast of summer house vibes. I love the colour and warmth in all his productions and remixes, especially the obviously-titled Sunshine, and I can't get enough of the deliriously blissful chipmunked vocals on his remix of Aufgang's "Channel 7". It's almost a direct contrast to the vocal sample manipulations so rife in post-dubstep sounds just now - like, if the r&b cut-ups and synthetic textures evoke sadness, then Talabot's work signifies pure joy and release.

Also, apparently "John Talabot" is an alias of someone who is already known - does anyone know anything about this?

His remix of Al Usher's "Hilversum" (as "Silverhum") is one of the high points of the Ewan Pearson mix CD for Kompakt - the full-length version of that is great.

He is one of the best producers out there for my money, just so lush and melodic. His music makes me want to go and dance on a boat somewhere.

His remix of Mario & Vidis' Changed is really hitting my sweet spot. I love what he does, so much tension and release. His way with vocals is above and beyond his peers.

His remix of Shit Robot's "Take Em Up" is really good too, but the trojan horse in his career so far is "La Ninya (Afrodub Version)", which is all sunset nostalgia and whirling guitars covered in haze and smoke. The playlist I've made of all his remixes and original productions has made great sunbathing music with the recent good weather here too - can we pull our money together and hire him for a boat party?

No Delorean remix either, blimey.

I like the Delorean remix but I don't think it's far off the vibe of the original and, especially as they keep covering/remixing/interpreting each other's songs, I think the links there are obvious enough. Plus, he doesn't push the vocal science quite so far on it, and maybe it's just the happy hardcore fan inside me but I really like how he manages to manipulate his sources with air and delerium.

Obviously it's a testament to his talent that something so good itself could be perceived as a relatively "normal" track in his career.

The "composer" field of the "Families" MP3s bought from iTunes lists the name "Oriol Riverola Soto" - is this his real name? Not that it makes anything more clear.

"Lover's Tradition" off that is fantastic, better than the Glasser collaborations.

wasn't impressed with 'families', glasser's vocals, which i usually like a lot, didn't stick. need to listen again.

i love almost everything i've heard from pional. i just bought a used copy of the delorean remix from a year or two ago, which is rad. i think "in another room (pional's reduxed version)" is my favorite track, but "where eagles dare" is p excellent too.

i'm a bit nervous about the JT album. as much as i love lots of his remixes etc, i sometimes find whole albums by producers with that very up, wide-eyed style a bit hard to take. hope i'm wrong tho!

If you listen to a load of his remixes in a row he can feel quite formulaic and very limited (possibly consciously so) in his sound-palette, although the best are amazing. Kind of hope he's saving the best for his album, which is more than you can say for a lot of producers with a string of great remixes behind them.

If there's even one track on the album as good as "Leave Me (Friendly Pattern Version") I will be v. happy.

i haven't heard that one but of what i have heard, it's def a case of saving his best for the album - the limited sonic palette makes it a more coherent listen (and actually, there's a deceptively wide range of sounds in there, they're just all put to the service of the talabot aesthetic) and some of the melodies are just incredibly good. also, best sense of build-and-release in dance music since prime booka shade

Yep, the album is a really really nice listen. "Destiny" is the track that struck me first time round (not on Youtube unfortunately), but I'm sure I'll have a new favourite tomorrow.

Barcelona house producer John Talabot has a knack for capturing the very specific kind of bliss associated with dancing on Mediterranean beaches at the height of summer. A penchant for rising chords means that all his melodies make you feel like raising your arms and face to the sun. Talabot also has arguably the greatest sense of build-and-release in dance music since prime Booka Shade: ƒin is full of incredible tension-releasing moments, from the extended break in Destiny to the entrance of Missing You's bouncing bass. The generosity of Talabot's sound can also be ascribed to the amount of disparate ingredients he puts to use in service of his aesthetic – particularly the variety of human voices on display. There are wordless chants and bright, optimistic pop hooks; an echoing scream is plucked from a horror film and deposited in the middle of a carnival on Oro y Sangre, while on So Will Be Now, cut-up vocals coalesce gradually and gorgeously into recognisable language. All of humanity seems to be here – and it's busy celebrating being alive.

I kind of agree with LG - maybe not necessarily re "wintry" but it does vibe indoors and late-night for me rather than "face to the sun".

Booka Shade comparison is probably on point here in that tracks like Mandarine Girl and In White Rooms were alternately really chilly and teutonic and then suddenly really hands-in-the-air and balearic sounding.

I feel like this album starts off pretty icy and then warms up. Actually a lot of this reminds me of The Field, although much better than The Field because he's much better at doing space and build-and-release.

Really feeling this record so far, still on my first listen. It's funny how summer vibes has become such a theme of this thread - is this because of lex's review? - but it snowed for the first time in Amsterdam today and 'Destiny' sounded perfect on my way to work.

the Primavera set is billed as 'live' but i guess it will vary

not feeling this. it seems kinda predictable to me: each track builds pretty much as you would expect; each switch gets flicked when you had anticipated it would. that's not always bad and, in fact, it can be useful in a dancefloor context, but it makes for a pretty dull home listen in this case and i can't imagine dancing to any of it either.

i've downloaded this but haven't felt the need to put it on yet, i keep just listening to sunshine and families

I'm scared to listen to this, the not-sunshine vibes suggested by people in this thread make me worry it won't have the same omgwow factor that all his earlier stuff has had for me.

I'm a bit worried that the album might be too quick to offer up all its charms and it might have worn out its welcome in a week or two...but atm it's exactly what I want to hear. It will be interesting to see how ILM rates it in next year's EOY...

I want to make an album more relaxed, more plain, without many highlights or any tracks that could get more attention by themselves than the full album, and I wanted to have a more intimate sound, more introspective, more dense, a way of defining all these is with the ‘dark’ word.

This is a really good description of the record, but seems like an odd set of ambitions in a way.

Destiny immediately stood out, I suppose mainly because of the vocals. But everything else I've had to listen to several times. I've even had some trouble associating particular tracks with names. It's all extremely detailed and subtle. I like it a lot though!

One thing I find quite remarkable about john tabalot's productions (in general, but the album provides a high-concentrate example) is how they sound so deliberately loop-driven and structured, like you can imagine him walking along a line of machines and calmly deploying each little motif one at a time, and yet... everything builds so naturally and inevitably. What am I missing on this album? I've listened to it three times and it's still just not caught me. It's weird when this many people whose opinions I usually trust go absolutely doolally for an album and I just can't hear what they're hearing.

(But then again, I wasn't even that impressed by that song he did with Glasser, and obviously I love Glasser. Feel this may be some contrarian block on my part.)

I see what you're getting at (structurally rather than sonically at least). What this at its best reminds me most of is the Orbital of InSides, especially The Girl With The Sun In Her Head - where you just hear all these loops patiently building on top of one another until they're all intersecting and you get this amazing build almost without noticing it. When the record is least successful is when Talabot abandons this approach and just lets the sounds sit there (El Oeste reminds me of The Field in a bad way).

You can find out his name, former production name and previous club residency if you google it. The only track I'd heard from him previously wasn't like the new works. Kind of electro house / techno mid 2000s influenced by Areal, Sender, Kompakt etc.

I think it was a Spanish site I saw it. Anyway, I think I read that he was resident at the Loft in Barcelona and his former production name was D.A.R.Y.L. Hopefully this wasn't a bad thing to post.

Here's a D.A.R.Y.L. track on Factor City from 2006. Factor City is/was a Barcelona based label which, I think the main act were Undo and Vicknoise. Maybe related to Ferenc which did an album for Kompakt..

Not sure about the Orbital references. Booka Shade I can just about see but fIN is more gothic. One comparison that leapt out at me: "When the Past Was Present" brought to mind early Saint Etienne! Try playing it back to back with "Speedwell", say.

This is a good album but I think it's most successful when Talabot has a vocalist to play off against (interesting contrast to Azari & III here, where I much prefer the tracks on their album that don't have the two vocalists on). The instrumentals are well constructed, and build very naturally as others have said, but sometimes lack a pay off. A notable exception is "Last Land", which is probably my favourite track at the moment.

Both the Pional collabs are awesome. But "So Will Be Now..." is particularly lovely. Are the vocal phrases on this 'sampled' from another song? The lyrics seem v. familiar.

This. Booka Shade obv are an excellent comparison point too although as a general rule I think Talabot's grooves are more intricate whereas Booka Shade's were more spacious.

i think booka shade are way sleeker, and talabot more...relaxed? a touch more casual and thrown-together? they certainly use a different sonic palette, it's just what they both do with it that reminded me of each other

Aww I'm quite enjoying that DARYL track actually. It's no Fast Freeze but it's pretty good, although I not sure about the bit when it gets all maximalist near the end.

Forgot to mention that I saw dude play on Friday night, and while it was a DJ mix of other tunes rather than his own it was excellent, really captured that same endlessly rising layered build effect.

these talabot mixes are like catnip for me. i'm not sure that anyone else out there has the ability to balance dance purism and an indie aesthetic with even close to as much success. at least not in 2012.

Anyone who's a bit nonplussed by this album should check out the excellent second 'If This Is House I Want My Money Back' compilation from last year, which features a more upbeat Talabot as well as a load of other dudes from this whole scene (Pional, Beautiful Swimmers, Permanent Vacation etc). Also if contains Mano Le Tough's 'Let's Not Talk About Love' which is one of the best records made by anyone last year.

Yeah that third Permanent Vacation comp was really disappointing, far too many Sally Shapiro-type sadsack vocals all over the place. I really liked about half the second one and the first one is classic for all time, virtually everything there is wonderful.

The only problem with "don't leave me (friendly pattern version" is that the grinding boogie-machine outro should last five minutes rather than thirty seconds.

Remember being disappointed/bored with the first Permanent Vacation Selected Works compilation when it came out - especially since there seemed to be much more interesting neo-Balearic stuff around at the time, even the Fred Deakin Nu Balearica comp - but 'If This Is House I Want My Money Back Zwei' is really nice.

I substituted a few of the other Permanent Vacation releases from last year with the more lacklustre efforts on Vol 3 to make a better version. It really bothers me that Argy's "I Wish You Were Here" isn't on it.

Really pleased to see all the love for Mano, he is a really good mate of mine from Dublin, he's been in Berlin 4/5 years and it's really working out for him now. His flatmate is another really good pal and will be doing stuff on Permanent Vacation also.

When I play his tracks out they always get a great reaction, even from people who I don't think of as being into that side of house.

I used to know this guy I met on Soulseek, he sent me so many strange Chicago tracks. His username was lil808. He sent me a list of the best Dance Mania releases, with catalogue numbers, and I followed that list like it was my religion, if I saw a record with that number I’d buy it on sight, he was never wrong. I built my taste in house music via friends, forums like Global Darkness or Clone Records, it was an underground world you know. Nowadays everyone is reissuing the strange tracks I’ve known for 10 years. It’s nice now when young people approach me at the booth to find out the name of a track, ‘cos there’s lots of information out there but people don’t always have someone showing them the way. The WBMX house mixes were a big influence on me, people like Mickey Oliver from the Hot Mix 5, I was so lucky that people sent me those files. Let me be romantic – we have lost a bit of magic over the years.

love the way this record starts with a mish mash of the lush jungle of Depak Ine (my favorite track so far), the sleek cool urban Destiny and then the wonky, queasy El Oeste. the vocals on Journeys really drags it down, though (and I'm corny enough to like Panda Bear vocals).

there are some parts that almost have this carnival-esque vibe but sorta dark... in places (esp "depak ine") it reminds me of mungolian jet set if they went for something more lush and pop

I was just trying to draw a reaction, to see what the deal was with John and the Blondes. Since you funky goons are pretty much the only goons on ILM worth taking a poll of. Maybe I'm missing somingthing with John and the Blondes? Just playin' about. Wouldn't tease if I thought you lot where shit or anything.

Liking Blondes and Talabot has very little to do with liking DFA, and a lot to do with liking tech-house IMO, and in particular I suspect liking the golden age of electro-house into big room minimal circa 2004-2006.

I don't think there's anything particularly indie sounding about either album, except for hipster house associations with Blondes that have no real bearing on the sound of the music, and the Delorean guy's vocals on the on the one Talabot tune.

Off two exposures this is really nicely put together, smooth, head-nodding, but it's lacking a little something... alien, or unique, or really idiosyncratic. It just seems "really good" rather than "special", which is fine and dandy, and will probably turn out to be more than enough after continued exposure, but I've not gone "wow" at it. Yet.

This is how I approach most dance music, I've realised. Like, a little 'tish' noise coming in at the right time or a melodic loop that changes the whole complexion of the sound does so much more for me than a massive drop or whatever.

Blondes and Talabot are pretty similar in their approach and sound palette I think. Blondes are a bit hazier, druggier, later in the party maybe.

idk the blondes record feels more like a grouping of refined jam sessions, more fluid and less deliberate in approach imo. which is not to say that they don't know what they're doing, i mean this in a respective sense

blondes appeal to me more because of sound design and mood, talabot because of melody and structure (build-and-release etc)

His live set was nice, basically the album with a different track list. Him and Pional standing behind keyboards, triggering stuff and singing. I'm probably underrating it but I'm comparing it to seeing him dj, which was the best set I've heard all year.

This DJ Kicks mix is urgent and key. It's dark and moody, intense and 'humid' atmospherics, but still with his sensibilities for big hooks and melodies. Apparently the selection is "not for clubs," but I would happily dance to this all night. It is absolutely my shit right now.

Mines a similar vein as Immer 2 imo, especially that selection towards the end with SCSI-9, Jesse Somfay and the Sten Remix, but does so much more dynamically and vividly. 27 tracks as well, it's super-detailed in a good way.

It's weird, it just falls totally flat for me, I feel like that Dixon and Ame Boiler Room kind of took this sound as far as I'd want it to go.

Am on a long few weeks of p much only listening to Tim Hecker, Deaf Centre, and other stuff along those lines, cos they help me to do some writing work I've got on the go, so it may be bad timing for me.

I was only so-so about the album in the end too tho.

There is one track near the end I liked as well as Old Song, had heard it before, it's the DJ Samo one.

Old Song is all-time tho.

I particularly like the way he mixes the Young Marco remix of "Heterotopia" into "We Doubt (You Can Make It)". It's the kind of two-totally-different-songs-become-one trick that Villalobos used to pull off on the rare occasions when he felt like being gregarious.

The Dixon and Ame Boiler Room is a good reference point for this, but it has some of the "let's build a soundworld" portentous swirliness that I associate with the Wighnomy Bros' Metawuffmischfelge and Mayer's Immer 2.

Almost entirely cos it's a few years old, I have it on vinyl in my parent's house, used to play it out a lot, and it was on a Superpitcher mix years ago, so all your points are fair!

i think the segue from the Untitled track into Round - Glass (kind of a google proofed-who is this guy?) works really well too. also all the comparisons to the Dixon/Ame Boiler set from last year are otm, didn't make that connection myself but it fits.

I feel like the arrival of "Glass" is the actual "ascend into soothing house classicism" moment that everyone describes the arrival of "Old Song" as being - like, if you didn't know the latter already and then read reviews, when "Glass" starts up you'd think "oh this must be that Old Song track".

Separately, Mohr must feel like his title for "Old Song" becomes more and more appropos every day.

It was fitting even when it came out, and not cos it's like retro in a dance way, it just kinda sounds old in a different way.

Samsa is my jam and far and away the best thing on this. I appreciate what they're going for here, but sometimes the melodic ideas run their course pretty quick for me and it feels weird. For the most part this is a killer summer record though and is very good as a companion to movement.
