You have until midnight on the 19th, Englisher time to vote.

It'll be a top 50, 50-41 revealed the 20th, 40-31 revealed the 21st, 30-21 the 22th, 20-11th the 23rd, the top 10 on Christmas Eve.

No nominations, we don't have time. Feel free to use this thread to encourage people to vote for your favourites.

Vote for a top 10. Points will be simple, 10 = 1, 9 = 2, 8 = 3... your #1 = 10

Dunno what happens if you get all butthurt and start nomming stuff from religions that don't recognise Santa or whatever, haven't had time to think it through. It's a Christmas poll though, don't be a nobhead.

MERRY SANTAS BIRTHDAY EVERYONE.

(Not just doing this because i'm bored and bed ridden, honest.)

This thread is worth checking out for Youtubes and stuff: C/D: Christmas music

seandalai, Friday, 17 December 2010 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

OK I voted. One question, though: are you going to amalgamate votes for different versions of the same song? Some wobs 'standards' have equally worthy interpretations that may attract votes.

(oh what am I saying, the top ten'll be wall-to-wall Sufjan, won't it? Bah humbug)

Jeff W, Friday, 17 December 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

considering i only have 1 vote so far, i dont think i need to worry about amalgamating votes. if people vote for just "white christmas" or whatever without a specific version noted then they will be treated in the same bucket as 'trad.'

I can only think of three I definitely want to vote for... What are the rules on voting for songs that aren't really Christmas songs but you listen to them at Christmas and they have thematic links? Like, could I vote for 'Listen, the Snow is Falling'?

emil.y, Friday, 17 December 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

lol if i end up with an ilm doppelganger its gonna be weird

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Friday, 17 December 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

songs about snow that sound christmassy and are played at christmas = fine. songs about christmas that don't sound christmassy (thinking that gza tune... cold world?) = fine. songs that aren't christmassy, about things associated with christmas like snow or presents and not about christmas, such as say Who Shot Ya or Yellow Submarine = not fine.

Cool?

I am tempted to vote the Chemistry Experiment's Happy New Year at #1 if you think that'd be enough to get it in. (NB: this is my own band, and thus I am not actually going to vote for it at all. Was trying to find it online somewhere to rep for it but sadly it does not exist except in lists of our songs.)

loving this thread, the pestering factor is immense

Serious suggestion to work round the lazy thing - abandon the top 50 idea, allow four more days for voting, and just do a top ten or twenty on Christmas Eve?

'Baby It's Cold Outside' is such a great record. All the more so because al-qaeda hate it so much.

Also, it was written by the same guy who did 'Sit Down, You're Rocking The Boat', which was one of my greatest pleasures from the 20th Century Poll process. How awesome to have both of those on your CV.

Good question. Lindstrom is obv too far out to be considered trad. dunno about Bright Eyes

So far I've not really had any overlap, crazy enough. Come Tuesday I'm going to youtube things with the same name titles, and if there is just no fucking difference, i'll call it trad but maybe incl. the specific version? Like remixes are sometimes done in normal polls?

18. Gift X-Change - Calexico
19. Hwiangerdd Mair - Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
20. Just Like Christmas - Low
21. In The Bleak Midwinter - Laverne, Lauren

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 10:56 (fifteen years ago)

That honestly looks like the most insufferable compilation imaginable. The drippy indie Christmas cover version is the absolute worst.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 11:12 (fifteen years ago)

don't think most of those are covers tbf, most likely some old pish the bands had lying around given an appropriate lyrical paintjob

FYI if I'd read this before now I would have voted for 'Christmas Time '99' by Gorse

When I Pardew I See Rakes (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 11:33 (fifteen years ago)

1. Alan Parsons In A Winter Wonderland - Grandaddy
4. Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas - Eels
5. Feliz Navi-nada - El Vez
8. O Come O Come Emmanuel - Belle & Sebastian
20. Just Like Christmas - Low

These are decent songs to be fair.

seandalai, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

Those are the best ones, yes.

I'd add :

10. White Christmas (demo For Tom Waits) - Flaming Lips
21. In The Bleak Midwinter - Laverne, Lauren

The rest I'm not so bothered about, but then again there's not one I would actively skip, I think.

Original carols >>> drippy indie versions - you get to sing them! In church! With other people! Even classics like Something Stupid & Cliched to be Cynical at Christmas would be improved if you got to do this.
