I should put in a mention of Kevin Saunderson's mix on Groovetech.com from London in 2001. My next thread will be me asking for help trainspotting one of those tracks...

Online mixes: 2000 DEMF sets by Kenny Dixon Jr, Dego, and Shake (on groovetech.com), Dettinger's Mutek set (on mutek.ca), heaps of mixes on deephousepage.com from Ron Hardy, the Hot Mix 5, the Wizard, Knuckles, Tee Scott, Tony Humphries, Derrick May (his Music Institute set = guhhh....).

Hard banging ass techno from 96. This CD pretty much set the direction for techno for the next few years. Everybody act on it went on to international dance music stardom.

Mixed Up Hague by DJ I-F

This cd is Italio-Disco heaven and set a new direction in dance music. It is all old classics and a few tracks from Viewlexx records thrown in for good measure. Obviously, the sound is old, but he brought a lot of there records back from the grave for a lot of people. There would be no Electro-Clash trash without I-F. He was the man that DJ hell stole everything from, and Hell is still trying to bite his record collection.

My favorite mix of all time is Derrick May's set at the first DEMF. He was playing everything from house to having members of the Last Poets come on to do spoken word. There has only been one occasion where I have actually cried during a DJ set, and it was that night. The man is praised to death because he deserves it. Now if only he would get off his ass and make some new records. ;)

Also, Convexion by Convexion is not a Detroit record. It was released on Sean Deason's Matrix label, but Convexion is not a Detroit based producer. He is a fellow based in Dallas Texas. He has been laying low for the last few years, but he has new material coming out on Down Low records. It is a shame, because he is a fine producer.

bollocks as usual, unless this mix is from 1991 which I seriously doubt. Still Mixed Up Hague sounds worth checking out.

The Derrick May mix I love too, Green Velvet's 'The Preacher' just seems to have been made for that way of mixing. I'm amazed it's so popular here because when it was released it got really mixed (hoho) reviews.

And yes, DJ Hell's Live at Fuse is one of my faves at the moment (Andrew McLaughlan's 'Love Story' on that mix is utter genius).

Dave Angel, the orbit, april 1993. really unique set, before techno went totally Mills/Young/Hawtinesque, but total absence of wild/taylor/zamani/bondzio acid, so its quite a unique set (many well known tracks - koenig cylinders, couple of bollands tracks, aurins mecon, loads and loads i would like to know)

Joey Beltram, orbit, dec 93. joey starts off with mike dunn's magic feet (one of the djax rmxs which i prefer to the original), into my sound and energy flash (well, duh!) and then gradually veers closer and closer to gabba (i smell the blood of an english.....muffin!)

Easygroove, fantazia, may 92. oldskool hardcore of course, nookie, manix, piano choonz, breaks, amusing mc too - "my djs in the mix, my djs in the mix, i think hes had 3 weetabix!", and "ecstasy, you really got me going, got me so i don't know what i'm doing" yeeah! on the end of this tape there is, like, 30 seconds of krome and time djing at a rave somewhere with 3 ragga mcs and it sounds like the best nite EVER!

I also like the Laboratoire Garnier mix from 1995 IIRC, one of the first double mix-cd's which give Garnier some breathing space, Lots of classics, first cd is a bit more housier, second one spaced-out techno and acid. Favourite bit occurs on mix1 when Fierce Ruling Diva's 'You Got To Believe' is mixed into one of those Landstrumm bruisers.

The Stanton Warriors-The Stanton Sessions.

It starts with this remix of Basement Jaxx Jump and Shout which pretty much rips the original apart. Then the whole thing is just hard concrete funky evidence of how fucking wicked, mental, and danceworthy all the nu-breakbeat stuff these days is. There's a fantastic MC over the whole thing too, it's just a fucking rollercoaster, unlike lots of mixes aswell this one is instantaneously appealing. It won't come out of your player for months and you'll change your favourite track every week.

Justin Robertson-Bugged Out Mix.

This comes with a Felix mix on the flipside but ignore it in favour of JR's one. He's another sort of "always on the bill, never topping it" type of DJ, inexplicably. This starts housey, with this wicked Sam the Man Burns track that has this great vocal "house music, can no longer be, commercial free". Then you've got the Tenaglia remix of Flash later which is pretty cool, and a few absolute disco-squeal classics like Hatiras-Spaced Invader. Can we call that whole sound Disco-Squeal or something, I'm talking double fast French House with techno elements.

Also Tom Middleton-Sound of the Cosmos-Check it out definitely, 3 CDs of kind of relaxed breaks and house but not in a bad way. He does a nice boot of Sunglasses at Night and Blue Monday too.

Sasha & Digweed - Northern Exposure
- it seems right to laugh and sneer, but just because S&D's idea of dance music (in short: melodic and emotional) is totally wrong as a universal approach, that doesn't mean it doesn't sound gorgeous on its own terms (Sasha's new album is quite pleasant too, actually, if a bit tiring in full).

Deep Dish - Yoshiesque
- that said most days I prefer Deep Dish's approach, which has the good sense not to jettison the funk. Re: what distinguishes Deep Dish's take on prog - clearly it's the warmth, no? I always thought the yellow and green of the packaging that perfectly distinguished them from the typical blues and greys of most prog.

- I've grouped these three together because, despite their differences, their core value for me is largely the same in that they all focus on the irresistible danger inherent to intermeshing non-identical grooves. If Herbert's the only one who explicitly courts mistakes, all three nonetheless recognise the sexual allure of instability.

I've got to admit that Coldcut's "Journeys By DJ" is a fave, I'm a bit of a sucker for pointless eclecticism. In which case David Holmes' "Essential Mix" and "Come Get I Got It" have to be mentioned, as well as the Lo-Fi's "On The Floor At The Boutique" which is barely mixed but packed full of goodness (No Diggity, Stakker Humanoid, Out Of Space, Be Young Be Foolish Be Happy). In this vein "The Document" by DJ Andy Smith is a work of genius, and actually works as a mix despite such inspired juxtapositions as Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel with Peggy Lee's Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay.

There's plenty of good stuff already mentioned, Ronan's first three selections are pretty much spot on (I haven't heard the others). Justin Robertson's "Imprint #1" is also worth a listen, though get the "Bugged Out!" one first and don't ignore the Felix flip, you spendthrift fools.

Has anyone heard all the FABRIC mixes? I like the first with Craig Richards, amd abivalent about the second with Terry Francis, and have yet to hear the third (although I know at least one track is the bomb... "G String Underbeard" anyone?). Does anyone like or dislike #3 or #4 with Tony Humphries?

as for Derrick May and DEMF, I was caught in the hail storm the second year.

Richie Hawtin-"Close to the edit" 100 tunes, 300 loops condensed into 53 minutes. Fucking genius. Very minimal, very trippy in places but always very dancefloor orientated.

Bentley Rhythm Ace FSUK mix-Not a straightforward dance mix as such. And I dont know what kind of club you would hear Jefferson Airplane mixed into Fatboy Slim or Georgie Fame mixed into Hardfloor. Good fun.

Stanton Warriors-"Stanton Sessions"-Hard to categorize this mix. It's got lots of different styles and it rocks.

Mixmag Live Hardcore Classics... didn't they hate hardcore when it came out, and then cash in later? Still a good mix, especially the second half...

Has nobody heard the FABRIC mixes? I am desperate for more info...

Also Michael was on the euro with Mix Up THe Hague Vol.1 . Excellent mix although not as radical as he seems to think (90% of the mix could have been finished before 1987 or at least just after David Toop's A-Z of Electro ;).

You are missing the point. Mixed Up Hague was radical because it re-introduced alot of those tracks to the younger heads. Obviously, main stream disco and the stuff that played more into Garage never really left people's consciousness (if for no other reason than Filter-House biting all those records...) but the Italio records were not really being championed, at least not that I am aware of. That mix summed up the aesthetic of those records and made a lot of people aware of them.

That was a weird point in time(1999.) Millsian Hard Techno had run it course, Basic Channel and everything that came out of it was running out of steam. Tech-House was beat, minimalism was getting tired. Mixed Up Hague was a new option, Techno-Antiquarianism. House music has always had black music, but to some extent, Techno repudiated that. Mixed Up Hague allowed people to reach further back than Detroit Techno. I-F was displaying the roots of Techno.

Ference did not change anything about those records, but he changed the way people we looked at them. Who else was championing that sound at that point in time? The only others I can think of would be Danny Wang and Metro Area.

But yeah I get your point and it's a good thing to just present the whole aesthetic, not just a couple of cool ironic old tracks at the end of your mix.

Subliminal Sessions 3-Erick Morillo. It's all very vocal, vaguely cheesey but in a nice summery latin way. Diva house tune of the year is still "At Night" by Shakedown.

As for mix CDs in general, I favor the Holy Trinity of Global Underground: 012 Buenos Aires (Seaman), 013 Ibiza (Sasha), and 014 Hong Kong (Digweed). To me, these three represented the peak of the whole Global Underground concept, not to mention the best tunes and most inspired set programming and mixing. I feel this was the peak of GU-style "prog house/trance," even though I hate that terminology.

The GU series probably my favorite mix CDs, and as far as i'm concerned it just keeps getting better and better. this is killer all the way from go to whoa; you gotta hear the mixing on it - so smooth it's unbelievable! some guys I know tried to tell me that it's boring or something, but i'm like you - it's nobody's business, just listen to what you like!

Also - Someone tell me the difference between 2 Many Djs and Hang the DJs mixes please. Is this both Radio-Soulwax?

bingo beats 2 is really quite good. 1 is boring as fuck. i think this is down to the differences as selector of bias and zinc.

unpretentious covers a lot of ground and doesnt lose site of the groove.

I also live the thomas tobias smallville mix cause it does what i liked to do in my mixes, tries to tell a story and takes you on a little journey.

Taka Taka is good but I'm not sure if I love it. To be honest I've always had difficulty connecting emotionally with Perlon-style stuff even when it *sounds* fantastic (excepting Markus Nikolai), and in these initial stages I only really swoon when Taka Taka goes on a "proper" chunky house tip (were you saying this as well Jess?)

I have no idea who most of these people are, and the mix, and the music it contains, is not especially revolutionary nor intellectually stimulating, but I would love to be on the floor hearing it. Its really similar to prog, and all the best and worst of that genre, except the records just sound sweatier, a little less sterile.

1) Richie Hawtin - Mixmag Live (1995)

Still sounds fresh as a daisy. Ahead of its time for sure.

2) Ricardo Villalobos - Love Family Trax

Prefer this to Taka Taka to be honest. His new fabric mix is also quality (not sure if it qualifies as a proper mix cd though).

3) Cassy - Panorama Bar 01

Nice and eclectic (for a 'minimal' set)

4) LTJ Bukem - Mixmag Live (1996)

No MC'ing thank god. And lots of crossfader action (as previously mentioned).

5) Recloose - Jigsaw Music

Quirky deep house mix

6) Stacey Pullen - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix (1996)

Actually prefer this to his DJ Kicks (also good). 50/50 split between house and techno - both halves equally good. It's refreshing to see a garage stormer (Michael Procter's 'Deliver me') in the same set as some classic detroit bangers of the time. His fabric mix was massively disappointing compared to this.

7) Grooverider - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix (1997)

An absolute classic. Groove doesn't flatten the listener with techstepper after techstepper but throws in some lighter / jazzier tunes to offset the darker stuff. D&B's final peak in my opinion.

8) Richie Hawtin - BBC Radio Maida Vale mix (2004)

Some great Matthew Dear / Mathew Jonson stuff in here.

Vahid did I ever complain to you about yr underrating Business As Usual... by Brett Johnson? It's totally classic. Every time I pull it out I like it more. So dense'n'intense, just go go go go go the whole way through. Johnson's "Jiffy Pop"! Derrick Carter's "Do You Believe?"!! Awoke's "Awoke"! And above all the utter brilliance of Pepe Bradock's remix of Iz & Diz's "Mouth". It strikes me that a lot of nu-deepness in europe is taking its cues from this sort of stuff. What Classic-style mix should I be liking more? Apart from Sounds Your Eyes Can Follow?

yeah i just took it out last night and listened again and i was *shocked* how good it was. you probably want to check out rob mello's recent mix for classic too.

not sure what else i can recommend in this vein. it seems to me like this sound's already been subsumed into the less ghetto/thug end of the "fidget house continuum", if such a thing exists. i was listening to switch's mix of jentina's "french kisses" today and i realized how boompty boomp it was. which was a surprise to me, because switch's bastard children (herve, sinden, others) seem interested in rewriting fidget house as an update of chicago ghetto house rather than an update of mainstream chicago (fuck it) boompty house.

but anyway ... jesse rose's volume of "body language", maybe? whatever trevor loveys is doing these days?

the only labels i can really think of off the top of my head are dubsided and freerange. and neither of which are particularly good suggestions. for whatever reason dubsided is like the most unheard "hot label" right now, they might as well be an urban / funky house for all the mainstream exposure they get. freerange on the other hand probably gets entirely too much respect. lots of listenable moments but also a bad vibe hanging over the thing. you listen and enjoy and suddenly you realize this is just 2nd or 3rd generation hybridized version of ye olde UK tech house a la terry francis or circulation, and that old homily comes to mind "can a rabid dog have tame puppies" .... or something like that. "an ill tree bears no good fruit"? what was that saying?

Yeah I should check out that Mello mix, his Resident Advisor set was fabo along these lines.

Speaking of apples not falling far from the trees I always did love that first Layo & Bushwacka album, though I guess that's more breaksy. "Deep South" still classic 4 eva though.

Hardkiss on ILM? Hard to believe. I think I listened to that mix when it came out and was sorely let down because it was nothing like Scott Hardkiss' *Yes* mix. *That* one would be practically flawless if it didn't have the stupid "acid funk" song.
