Pt. 1 Today: The Land of the Ties (54 - 38)
Pt. 2 Tomorrow: A Whole Six Points Between Them (37 - 16)
Pt. 3 Christmas Eve: The Top 15! Woooo!
Pt. 4 Christmas Day: Enjoying the birth of Santa, no matter how awful your family gatherings are!

Considering there is a whole point between 54 and 38, with only 1 song getting 2 votes, it is just going to be a day of songs people really like at Christmas. I'm putting them in order of i. what has a youtube and ii. what i like the most.

Any more coming soon?

emil.y, Wednesday, 22 December 2010 12:24 (fifteen years ago)

Haha, top work a ho ho. Would've gone for a heavily condensed rundown myself, with that breakdown, but full marks for bringing the festive cheer.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 22 December 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

So 8 points and 1 vote means everyone's #3 and up made it, then? Excellent.

emil.y, Wednesday, 22 December 2010 12:57 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, I kinda went for a nap. Didn't hurt as there was only 17 people on ilx when i posted the Elvis. This afternoon will be see them posted more often, posted in between me cleaning the bathroom and playing FM.

terrifically freaky video, best of the peculiar glam-christmas genre i think.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

a lot of the classics are painfully over-tired at this time of year tho. can't fault it, and yeah the video is great, but I never get excited when I hear it start up.

all this bedrest the past two weeks have meant i've bypassed christmas music this year and have no problem just hearing it once or twice. those hearing it 1000s of times would obv feel different.

baubles to the wall (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty atypical of his other work which was Bowiesque, angsty funk-rock and there's a suspicion that it may be a bit of an ironic joke but I take it at face value and love it's hokey sincerity.

State Attorney Foxhart Cubycheck (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

It's off the Ze Christmas Record. And there's at least one more from that LP still to come...

Oops, the Frankie one was mine - may have misjudged the tenor of this poll, if it turns out the other non-Christmas tune is also one of mine. Cracking song though, and was #1 the week before Christmas only to be kicked off by Band Aid iirc

think my number 1 might be coming up

baubles to the wall (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

Covered this on the other thread. Tried to lump things in together, unless voters made a point of it being THAT version (for example some dude was all like 'has to be the bright eyes version' and i lold; think i threw them all in together anyway) or THAT version was individual enough that it didn't really work putting a carol in with a crazy electronic piece etc.

-this is a childhood favorite that didn't annoy me as I got older so I still like it (well the last 5 seconds suck)
-it's not the same 'Sleigh Ride' as the one that comes on the radio

486.52 (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 23 December 2010 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

On Christmas Day 2006, in a very swanky nightclub in Hangzhou (oligarchs and their fur-clad molls, £800 minimum cover charge to sit at a table, so we didn't bother), I stood open-mouthed as a troupe of sexy dancers in Santa-themed bikinis gyrated in cages above the dance floor, to the strains of Eazy-E's "Merry Muthaphukkin Christmas". Never knew what the track was called before, so cheers to this thread for resolving the mystery.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 23 December 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

Alos very pleased to see Davitt Sigerson's "It's A Big Country" placing. He occasionally wrote rather over-thought and impenetrable pieces for Sounds in the late 70s, so this track came as some surprise. Ironic pastiche maybe, but there's something touching and heartfelt about it too. Was very nearly in my Top 10, but I'd already placed two other tracks from the Ze Christmas Album.

Every part of this video is perfect?

His collar, the california beachhouse christmas, her sweater, the indoor snow, his pajamas - it's a record that provides a platform for Robbie to be the amazing fascinating dude he was when it came out, but it's also a totally enjoyable, sweet song musically - I will 100% stand by this vote.

clemenza, Thursday, 23 December 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

Well Magnetic Fields made my favourite album ever (69 Love Songs) so you know, I was already won over by the time it came out. And then add a Jesus&MaryChain sheen and heavens I'm yours. But also, it's funny, and it hits the nail so perfectly on the head of that ott feeling of seeing little reminders of your problem and pushing all of your feelings on to it. I really like the rest of the album it came from (Distortion) but I know many don't care for it. Usually people say hit up 69LS first and then go backwards, tbh and I wouldn't really disagree with that. Distortion is the only thing they made in the past decade that wasn't rubbish*.

*Well 'I Thought You Were My Boyfriend' off I is a total jam.

I've been enjoying watching the results unfold, even if doing so has been restricted to minuscule pockets of time among all the last-minute xmas hullabaloo. Enjoying the list: these sort of patchworks of novelty songs & age-old classics make for the best holiday playlists/mixtapes/etc. imo.

Not a huge fan of the waitresses meself tbh. I mean it's ok but i dont loooove it. The others in the top four were my top three iirc.

e.g. delay koala, ok ya! (ledge), Friday, 24 December 2010 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

Nos. 4, 5 and 6 were in exact order what I thought the top 3 would be! And the actual top 3 were all unknown to me, which I normally hate in a poll but am cool with here because Darlene Love is definitely the best song on the whole countdown. Or best modern song at least, because 'God, Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' was the one that really gave me the shivers.

Anyway, this was a fantastic idea Sam, well done and thanks. I thought I was all polled out after the 20th century epic, but this was terrific fun!
