i'm looking forward to the avril record, and that song's actually not too bad, but i feel like i need to hear a much higher quality version of it before i can have a strong opinion on it

Don't know what I expected from Avril, but after the divorce I had this idea of her coming back with angsty angry stuff that would sound just great. I guess this is a bit 'fuck you'-ish, but the track itself just sounds like a night on town. By the end I was engaged by its catchiness, however.

I liked Avril's live version of "What the Hell" on one of those New Year's Eve shows. The keyboard sound on it has a kind of 60s garage rock organ feel to it that I like.

Not sure if this qualifies (Is Róisín too out for pop? Does a producer leak override commercial release dates?), but Róisín Murphy's track with Mason, "Boadicea" (presumably scheduled for release with his They Are Among Us debut in March) isn't tracky at all and may be my favorite Róisín related thing since Ruby Blue.

Avril song is catchy, organpiano is fun. However, her nasal sneer, somehow perfect for conveying contempt c. 2001, doesn't manage to pull off anything more than vaguely bratty here? The deep cuts on Let Go were really good at bored, disaffected teenager, and the second album tapped into proper pillow-throwing angst. This is just fluffy. Not that there's anything wrong with fluffy pop music, but if Lavigne can't even be petulant, then what's she bringing to the table, exactly?

In a time where it's almost impossible to be huge for any extended amount of time, Gaga feels like maybe the only new artist in the last 3 or 4 years to have gotten there. The demo definitely sounds demo-ish. I don't really hear the Ke$ha similarities beyond the electroey elements. It's not bad but IMO it definitely needs a good-to-great production job to be decent.

i feel like the top of the Hot 100 these days has more to do with the artist than the record in the way the albums chart traditionally has been, and Pink is one of that handful of artists in the Gaga/Katy/Rihanna/Ke$ha/Eminem rotation that just shoots to the top of the chart with almost every big single release now.

"raise your glass" was perfect at grabbing the good will that creates -- all supportive and encouraging, like we'll all gather at Pink's feet and she'll, like, give us motherly advice about being awesome

yeah she's definitely a bit older than pretty much all her contemporaries (even with Britney there's a 2 year age gap) but she wears it well, still kind of bratty defiant but not increasingly ridiculous about as she gets older like Avril.

It could go massive, but I don't think its success will fully translate to America. To me the song has this weird feel that doesn't match the tempo, it's trying to be a laid-back song but there's this relentless pulse that seems to be trying to make everything speed up. In Price Tag the bass and guitar suggest this languorous feeling that the vocals don't match. In comparison, Billionaire and similar songs seem more cohesive and at peace with the chill feeling.

Some Dude, you may have read more than I have about this single and maybe there are people freaking re the hit potential for the whole album, but I haven't read that.

As for the merits of the song, I kinda agree with Maura in the Voice who likes it but adds:
