keeping it simple before any of the stupid ideas about this year's thread having a 'name' take off

first #1 of the year is "Grenade," ugh Bruno Mars train not showing any signs of slowing

hann am0n tana (some dude), Saturday, 1 January 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

lead single ""what the hell" from avril's forthcoming 4th album leaked today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfgztMZodaw

prolego, Saturday, 1 January 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

& the new britney single is dropping this month, rumoured to be on the 7th

prolego, Saturday, 1 January 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

i'm looking forward to the avril record, and that song's actually not too bad, but i feel like i need to hear a much higher quality version of it before i can have a strong opinion on it

markers, Saturday, 1 January 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

Don't know what I expected from Avril, but after the divorce I had this idea of her coming back with angsty angry stuff that would sound just great. I guess this is a bit 'fuck you'-ish, but the track itself just sounds like a night on town. By the end I was engaged by its catchiness, however.

2nd listen: yup, pretty catchy

abcfsk, Saturday, 1 January 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

I'm like.. uber-excited for Kim Kardashian's album. I know, at this point I should be over 'socialite makes an album' bs, but still.. The-Dream and Kanye are involved in the production, I'm just imagining Kardashian-as-Appollonia or something, v. exciting.

But obviously most anticipated album of the year is Lady GaGa's BORN THIS WAY.

i'd jump in front of a (bruno mars) train for ya (yeah yeah yeah)

tossed it in the trash, yes you did, etc. -- seriously these lyrics were secretly written by me @ age 12

i am looking forward to the new britney. it's a max martin/dr. luke track but they both had some very good output last year (amidst more middling stuff of course) and i imagine that a track they'd give to britney would be at least non-bad

teledyldonix, Saturday, 1 January 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

heard Like a G6 three times last night, that track is everywhere right now.

skip, Saturday, 1 January 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

i said this in the 2010 thread when "grenade" leaked but i really like it because it sounds to me like a total boy band song -- obv not nearly on the levels of the great max stuff that he did w/ bsb/nysnc but it's a pretty decent knock off w/ those backing vocals in the chorus & such -- i think the lyrics kinda add to that tbqh

johnny crunch, Saturday, 1 January 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, that Avril youtube has to be sped up about 5-10%.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 1 January 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

"Grenade" reminds me uncannily of... something. Seriously, every time it comes on the radio, which is all the time now, I spend the entire duration trying to figure out what it sounds like an exact copy of. Current theory is Frank Wildhorn.

katherine (katherinesta), Sunday, 2 January 2011 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

also I wish the real lyrics were "mad woman, bad woman, dangerous to know"

katherine (katherinesta), Sunday, 2 January 2011 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

I liked Avril's live version of "What the Hell" on one of those New Year's Eve shows. The keyboard sound on it has a kind of 60s garage rock organ feel to it that I like.

curmudgeon, Sunday, 2 January 2011 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

Not sure if this qualifies (Is Róisín too out for pop? Does a producer leak override commercial release dates?), but Róisín Murphy's track with Mason, "Boadicea" (presumably scheduled for release with his They Are Among Us debut in March) isn't tracky at all and may be my favorite Róisín related thing since Ruby Blue.

Though this would be less awesome and more funny but she should have roped in her sisters to do a Vanity 6/Apollonia 6 project. I can so totally see them in the lingerie with their signature blank stares on their faces.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 3 January 2011 05:22 (fourteen years ago)

Avril song is catchy, organpiano is fun. However, her nasal sneer, somehow perfect for conveying contempt c. 2001, doesn't manage to pull off anything more than vaguely bratty here? The deep cuts on Let Go were really good at bored, disaffected teenager, and the second album tapped into proper pillow-throwing angst. This is just fluffy. Not that there's anything wrong with fluffy pop music, but if Lavigne can't even be petulant, then what's she bringing to the table, exactly?

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 3 January 2011 08:47 (fourteen years ago)

oh dear this avril track is slightly sad. what on earth is her point in 2011?

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 3 January 2011 13:20 (fourteen years ago)

she sounds so bored on it :/

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 3 January 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

i'm actually sort of looking fwd to the new britney in that i have no idea what to expect at all. did she continue to work with rusko et al for it, or was it back to max martin and dr luke?

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 3 January 2011 13:22 (fourteen years ago)

Kim Kardashian is going to release an album, eh? Why am I reminded of the Paris Hilton fiasco aptly titled 'Paris'?

I'd be excited about Avril but her main sound isn't popular anymore. I sometimes feel like the Pop/Punk and Pop/Rock period of 2006-2009 went way too fast.

Rotating & Blunders (MintIce), Monday, 3 January 2011 14:40 (fourteen years ago)

I have to snicker at that album title. Born like what? Like a corporate shill that records innocent dance music? Honey, the clock is ticking and your novelty is wearing off!

Honey, the clock is ticking and your novelty is wearing off!

In a time where it's almost impossible to be huge for any extended amount of time, Gaga feels like maybe the only new artist in the last 3 or 4 years to have gotten there. You don't like her, fine, but manufacturing some kind of flash-in-the-pan status for her indicates you have no idea about anything.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 3 January 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

I really like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE47er6qnqg

And feel quite terrible for so doing. They're so obvs being pushed as the new Chase & Status (Pendulum Remix) that I can just tell there's something awful lurking here but the big smacking club-footed chonkiness of its big stupid riff is kind of making me fall in love with it. Also the bit in the video where the boychild reacts to discovering the machine has become unplugged...

Anyway, a lock for a big early-year chart position in the UK, I'd imagine.

William Bloody Swygart, Monday, 3 January 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

hahah that song is like 2 mins of intro and 2.5 mins of outro.

i like it too.

daavid, Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

popjustice says the production, stucture & vocal sound v. different on the real thing. so hopefully the real thing sounds nothing like ke$ha

prolego, Thursday, 6 January 2011 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

The demo definitely sounds demo-ish. I don't really hear the Ke$ha similarities beyond the electroey elements. It's not bad but IMO it definitely needs a good-to-great production job to be decent.

daavid, Thursday, 6 January 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

If it's a Lauren Christy/Matrix song, she's probably singing it herself.

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 8 January 2011 08:33 (fourteen years ago)

i'm pretty much pro the idea of most famous-for-being-famous socialites releasing music. their existence is kind of ridiculous enough as it is, and something about the blithe inappropriateness of it all really appeals to me. paris hilton's album still one of my favourites of the 00s, real talk.

definitely I agree with that! it's like - why shouldn't kim k release an album at this point

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 8 January 2011 08:36 (fourteen years ago)

I just feel more like why should she exist?

i don't even vacuum, i'm roomba pimpin (The Reverend), Saturday, 8 January 2011 08:38 (fourteen years ago)

defending ppl like her turns one into an extreme capitalist -- she exists because the market demands that she exist

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 January 2011 08:40 (fourteen years ago)

I don't recall being an extreme capitalist at any point in my life.

i don't even vacuum, i'm roomba pimpin (The Reverend), Saturday, 8 January 2011 08:42 (fourteen years ago)

i just find it way less offensive that "career" pop stars who i feel are talentless or obnoxious or unredeemable, like katy perry or ke$ha - the idea of kim kardash, paris h &c making music is really no more ridiculous than that.

also there's the idea of setting what is really a very weird existence - like why should they exist? why do they? it feels very unstable, like it shouldn't exist, and yet there they are larger than life - setting this to music. on which note, this speculative village voice blog on kim and terius is AMAZING http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2010/11/the_ballad_of_k.php

http://i54.tinypic.com/21dlzmd.png

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 January 2011 06:17 (fourteen years ago)

There's an unexpected piece in this week's EW about why Robyn can't seem to crossover in the US. In short, too many people who sound like her are crowding the market. Now Pink's trying to cop her look too, I guess.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 06:22 (fourteen years ago)

much as i don't like pink i'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say that was just a coincidence and that the photo just happens to look unusually robyn-esque. i mean, the two don't look that different to begin with and pink has always gone for the androgynous thing.

one of my old friends talked to me the other day and he lol'd about how she (robyn) is going to open for katy perry's tour.

teledyldonix, Monday, 24 January 2011 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

god someone find my long post from last year about how exasperated I am with the "{female pop singer x} is stealing {female pop singer y}'s look!}" conspiracy theories.

btw one of the reasons Robyn isn't a huge star in America is she looks mannish even compared to Pink

trv kvnt (some dude), Monday, 24 January 2011 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

pink looks more like herself than robyn in that picture

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 24 January 2011 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

femme fatale lipstick + lacy bra showing + smoky eyeshadow = not very robyn at all, in fact

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 24 January 2011 14:33 (fourteen years ago)

xp and also because while robyn's material may be stylistically pop in every respect, from the hooks to the production, her vocals are much more diffident and detached than most.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 24 January 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

if robyn was popular would she have this much critical attention?

*gets the power* (deej), Monday, 24 January 2011 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

why not? her most successful singles are usually the ones that get the most critical attn

what is it that critics like about her, that makes her stand out, that doesnt resonate w/ the general public?

*gets the power* (deej), Monday, 24 January 2011 16:19 (fourteen years ago)

idk why the public doesn't like her tbh and i don't really care that much. in 2007 america didn't like her b/c she looked like a dude but i guess ppl would be more receptive to that now.

i kinda feel like the new Gaga album will have like 4-5 huge singles no matter what, so if the first one sucks balls we'll just kind of tolerate it for a month or two and then a good one will kick it off the charts

williamstevenjames (some dude), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

^^pretty much

kl0pper city in the ghetto (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

and that if the album does have one terrible single it will probably be the first one. just a hunch i've had, even pre-shitty lyrics leaking.

williamstevenjames (some dude), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

i've also been wondering whether or not the first week numbers for the album will be the most for the next 5 or so years running

I dunno if anyone else here will like this besides me, but it's the new song by Dash & Will who I've been tracking since 2008 (their first batch of singles was really good, and the album wasn't too spotty). This is the first new music since, and they're reportedly working on the second record for later this year.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu9QLWIhXlU

It's probably "heavier" (?) than most of what gets play in here, but it's not indie and it's not rock, so I don't have any idea where else to slot it.

The GaGa song is interesting because it seems like the most explicit and self-conscious attempt by a big star to make some bwwig universal "generational anthem" (her words) since errr, Madonna's "Vogue"/"Like A Prayer"?

pink's other single from her greatest hits has a fair chance of going #1 next week. strange how this has become her most commercially relevant phase of her career

teledyldonix, Thursday, 3 February 2011 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

i feel like the top of the Hot 100 these days has more to do with the artist than the record in the way the albums chart traditionally has been, and Pink is one of that handful of artists in the Gaga/Katy/Rihanna/Ke$ha/Eminem rotation that just shoots to the top of the chart with almost every big single release now.

Bearenthetical Grylls (some dude), Thursday, 3 February 2011 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 February 2011 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i don't even really like the wiz song much but a regular-ass rap song hitting #1 would be pretty cool, especially that song the week of the super bowl

hercudeez and nuts affair (some dude), Thursday, 3 February 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

strange how this has become her most commercially relevant phase of her career

it makes sense, really: Pink has a kind of weathered, been-there, cool-big-sister appeal that gets better the longer she's around -- put her next to a bunch of young new stars and she sticks out as seeming wiser and more down-to-earth. "raise your glass" was perfect at grabbing the good will that creates -- all supportive and encouraging, like we'll all gather at Pink's feet and she'll, like, give us motherly advice about being awesome

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Thursday, 3 February 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah she's definitely a bit older than pretty much all her contemporaries (even with Britney there's a 2 year age gap) but she wears it well, still kind of bratty defiant but not increasingly ridiculous about as she gets older like Avril.

hercudeez and nuts affair (some dude), Thursday, 3 February 2011 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

cool-big-sister

That's easily the most succinct, accurate description of her appeal I've seen.

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 February 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

my wife pointed out to me recently that my eldest female cousin looks/sounds slightly like Pink and i was like wow you're right, so that especially rings true for me

hercudeez and nuts affair (some dude), Thursday, 3 February 2011 21:26 (fourteen years ago)

Jessie J "Price Tag" went to #1 in Britain its first week, I don't think it will chart well here in America, it has this lazy and slow feeling that I don't think will translate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMxX-QOV9tI

Ivor, Monday, 7 February 2011 06:13 (fourteen years ago)

you sure about that? it's basically the same feel as "Billionaire," which was inescapable, plus it has B.o.B, and it'll probably do well in the "alternative to club songs" niche

I'll still stan for "Do it Like a Dude," but this is zzzzzzzz

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 February 2011 07:16 (fourteen years ago)

It could go massive, but I don't think its success will fully translate to America. To me the song has this weird feel that doesn't match the tempo, it's trying to be a laid-back song but there's this relentless pulse that seems to be trying to make everything speed up. In Price Tag the bass and guitar suggest this languorous feeling that the vocals don't match. In comparison, Billionaire and similar songs seem more cohesive and at peace with the chill feeling.

Cee Lo Green's former top 10 "F**k You (Forget You)" claims the Hot 100's Airplay Gainer Award, jumping 19-16. The song, which, as previously reported, reaches a new peak on the Pop Songs chart five months after its release, also rockets to a new highpoint (42-23) on Radio Songs (44 million, up 42%). Green is expected to perform the song with Gwyneth Paltrow Sunday (Feb. 13) at the 53rd Grammy Awards. Among its four nominations, "F**k You (Forget You)" is up for coveted record and song of the year honors.

i hope that one day when the books on 50 cent as a marketer AND viral marketing successes in music are written, that everyone remembers when 50 cent came on to dance to jeremih's "down on me" w/ some random internet dude in a video that now sits at 29 million views (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=50+cent+down+on+me+keenan&aq=) in the process vaulting a jeremih song that no one cared about to one of the biggest rap/r&b hits of 2011

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:53 (fourteen years ago)

that's pretty weird! i've heard the song on the radio a lot for a while, though, don't know if that video really has anything to do w/ that.

some dude, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

idk if there's any way to check a song's billboard performance by a week but i'm almost positive that the song had a fairly large re-entry into the hot 100 (like into the 80s maybe) the week after that video dropped & has risen slowly to where it is now

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it's possible, i could see it getting a bump from that but it seemed somewhat pre-destined as a hit (at least moreso than any other recent Jeremih and/or 50 song) from the jump

some dude, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:34 (fourteen years ago)

that jeremih album was mad underrated around here, not a lot of possible singles like the first one (which is a classic) but i guess by virtue of having fiddy this one's a good choice. not one of my favorite songs from it tho

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

http://acharts.us/song/58713

check the boxes for the "us singles top 100" (the hot 100) and "us airplay top 100" (hot 100 airplay) then click the "draw graph" thing to have it draw a pretty picture for you. to me it looks like a pretty typical chart trajectory: debuts, falls a little bit because initial sales begin to lag while airplay catches up, then eventually things align pretty well until it eventually peaks. that video was released november 8th, which was during billboard's sales tracking week going from the 8th to the 14th. for whatever strange reason, this corresponds to the chart dated november 27th, which is actually when the track debuted on the hot 100 at #67.

that said, i think that vid has definitely done something because i have at least one friend who only heard the song because of that video.

in other news, i am kind of shocked that a jennifer lopez song is in the upper reaches of the itunes singles chart right now.

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 07:00 (fourteen years ago)

it was dormant for two months (on itunes in mid sept), video w/ famous internet star is posted, track debuts in the top 70 of the hot 100 = a pretty good case that the video made it a hit (or at least sparked it to be a hit)

yeah i am hearing "written in the stars" on the radio a lot now

i am guessing adele will be top 10 on next week's hot 100? she had a ton of exposure during her album release week and it all seemed to work out quite well for her

teledyldonix, Sunday, 6 March 2011 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

ok so this song is pretty good? dunno who gail scott is beyond "new universal/motown signing", i got this off a ciara RT.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AuBx5fy7Lc

also i'm really feeling the new j-lo! i was not expecting that, everything she's done in the past few years suggested she should quietly bow out of making music with dignity.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4H_Zoh7G5A

like the kim kardash, it succeeds because of how lite her voice is - i love how it actually dares to drop the beat out for longer than you expect, and it sounds so soft and untethered. and of course the woman who gave us "waiting for tonight" over a decade ago is adept at this miami house bizniz. also, is that...an accordion?

lex pretend, Monday, 7 March 2011 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

lol did ciara rt that and add "hey guys remember "goodies"?????????????"

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Monday, 7 March 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

oh lol she actually says "goodies" in the song too

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Monday, 7 March 2011 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

song is pretty aight

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Monday, 7 March 2011 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

can I just say that Rihanna/Ciara beef rekindled my waning admiration of Rihanna? shit was hilarious

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Monday, 7 March 2011 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

is that...an accordion?

That's the sample yes, and the song wouldn't be much without its hook. But then again 'Lambada' is pretty damn catchy.

abcfsk, Monday, 7 March 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

never would've guessed that this was j lo -- and yes, the slight softness of it is p nice

pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Monday, 7 March 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

haha is this another famous song i've never heard

lex pretend, Monday, 7 March 2011 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

i am sad b/c all the pretty/soft parts of "on the floor" sound exactly like "stereo love" except with the "lambada" sample substituted. and this song will be a lot bigger than "stereo love" was, at least in america.

little humma boy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 04:39 (fourteen years ago)

I do kind of like how Beth Ditto will do whatever she wants whenever she wants, considering that The Gossip began as a rave-up garage band. I've got no strong opinion either way on her recent solo stuff, but...yeah.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 08:43 (fourteen years ago)

I know that supposedly Beth Ditto has this "personality" and is a known singer and whatever, but I could have got into that video so much more if they'd substituted her face with a model's a la Black Box.

I do quite like the song, I just wish she was a bit more anonymous. It reminds me a lot, for some reason, of Billie Ray Martin's "Your Loving Arms", although I really can't find a reason why. How long before this 90s comeback starts to manifest itself in the pop music of today's superstars?

This! Genuinely sonically offensive is the awful 'Do It Like a Dude', weird gender role stuff a la early Katy Perry + obnoxious white girl patois hiphop a la Lonely Island. Price Tag is more "oh dear god another song about how music isn't about being commercial, it's about being *real* from someone who should KNOW better.

because (a) "real" vs. "commercial" rockism blah blah, (b) Jessie J is part of the very Dr Luke, pop songwriting, etc. machine that she's ostensibly railing against, (c) you are CHARGING MONEY for this song are you not? Answer: "I understand power to the people but everyone has to make a living. If you steal music I can't then give you more because I'm not proving to the label that I'm someone that's going to earn them money for them to keep me.", (d) it's not that great a song.

also "like a boy" doesn't sound like ass

the fact that chris brown has a hit makes me too depressed to even finish typi

★ The Pistns ★ Miss You Sheed ★ (dayo), Friday, 8 April 2011 14:11 (fourteen years ago)

"she ain't you" is decent for a new chris brown song, but mainly because it's a "right here/human nature" rehash and i've been on a swv tip lately

flow (chilli), Friday, 8 April 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

i probably never would have bothered listening to that song, but i cannot possibly ignore anything related in any way to "right here/human nature"

... and yeah, it is exactly the same. it might as well not exist.

i like "look at me now" so i'm glad that ended up being his first top 10 hit in however long

is there a special reason why this song is doing so well in the uk right now

teledyldonix, Monday, 11 April 2011 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

maybe people kept watching the video waiting for Cillian Murphy to show up?

borkslovethewu (some dude), Monday, 11 April 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

First (official) single from new girlband Soundgirl, out June (I think). Sort of how I wanted the last Rihanna album to sound:

http://x2fr.tumblr.com/post/4695716516/more-info-here

And yes, it is practically a re-production of Carly Simon's "Why"... still dope tho.

flopson, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 05:16 (fourteen years ago)

damn @ k'naan having a writing credit on "the lazy song"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 April 2011 05:22 (fourteen years ago)

i h8 the lazy song do u generally like k'naan tho? waving flag is frontrunner worst song of the decade imo

flopson, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 05:32 (fourteen years ago)

i've never heard a k'naan song

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 April 2011 05:33 (fourteen years ago)

i hate "the lazy song" too, just pushes the wrong buttons for me -- it's weird cuz i think it's a fine concept for a song & the lyrics are actually kinda funny but idk the celebratory nature of the whole thing really gives me the wrong vibe -- also the faux-reggae train/jason mraz genre is something i really despise

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 April 2011 05:40 (fourteen years ago)

i think "grenade" is really great tho

That Vendela song is the best pop song I've heard so far this year #postsverymuchincharacter

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 21 April 2011 00:05 (fourteen years ago)

"down on me" is officially a bigger hit than "birthday sex"

J0rdan S., Saturday, 23 April 2011 03:44 (fourteen years ago)

I still (unfairly) think of this guy as a one-hit wonder tho.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Saturday, 23 April 2011 05:39 (fourteen years ago)

Genuine LOL earlier when I spotted that "Fast Car" is set to go top 5 in the UK this weekend, til I realised that was probably just some Britain's Got Talent thing.

Wretch 32 sampling the Stone Roses is also #2 at present.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:23 (fourteen years ago)

I was really excited for a moment when I thought that meant The-Dream rather than Tracy Chapman.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:32 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, the UK album charts are lots of fun, especially in midweek. Not sure is weirder - Explosions in the Sky in the top 40 or Jamie Woon in the top 10. Metronomy had a top 40 album last week. Men'al.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:42 (fourteen years ago)

kinda confused about the wretch 32 single doing so well, i much prefer his last one

today's drive home was really an eye opening experience -- not only did i realize that i was ready to have akon back in my life, but i've also REALLY been sleeping on the new BEP joint -- it's like "meet me halfway" part II, i totally <3 it

J0rdan S., Monday, 25 April 2011 22:07 (fourteen years ago)

interested in what al thinks of the BEP song

J0rdan S., Monday, 25 April 2011 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

don't know why you'd single me out re: "Take It Down Low," I'm one of the few people here that's admitted to enjoying most of the recent Chris Brown songs! not gonna make too strong an instant reaction about it right now, though, could go either way really.

i really like "Just Can't Get Enough," at least before the tempo change.

barbaric ya'll (some dude), Monday, 25 April 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really want her working with Timbaland. I like the pop/rock vibe and I know she wants to go r&b... Well, just don't be safe and boring, please!

uberweiss, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

She's been in studio this week with a woman formerly credited on 'Got Dynamite', so hopefully she keeps the rock alive.

abcfsk, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 21:18 (fourteen years ago)

when she says r&b i'm envisaging stuff more in the vein of "behind enemy lines" (which remains my favourite lovato song)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 21:26 (fourteen years ago)

"got dynamite" is my second favourite so it's all looking good for me

this J. Lo album is sounding REALLY good on first listen

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

"get on the floor" is pretty much a classic imo

J0rdan S., Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it's catchy but what does it have that "stereo love" doesnt? pitbull's awkward attempts at zeitgeist grabbing?

i didn't think that much of the jlo album though

pitbull's second verse is awesome

J0rdan S., Thursday, 28 April 2011 12:21 (fourteen years ago)

"stereo love" had more lightness of touch imo

KIP malone (The Reverend), Thursday, 28 April 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

rumor has it tinie tempah's next single stateside will be a collaboration w/ wiz khalifa, produced by stargate

teledyldonix, Monday, 2 May 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

wiz + stargate are 2-2, so sign me up

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 May 2011 02:57 (fourteen years ago)

I think there's about 100% chance of that being better than "Written in the Stars", even if it sucks.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Monday, 2 May 2011 05:45 (fourteen years ago)

People comparing "On The Floor" to "Stereo Love" probably dont know this song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMn0zaOqUgo

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 2 May 2011 13:25 (fourteen years ago)

i have caught myself enjoying "Written In The Stars" once or twice, oddly enough

Osama Wig Wooden (some dude), Monday, 2 May 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think i've (knowingly) heard that song

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 May 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

of course that's where the melody comes from (i think lambada was mentioned somewhere upthread) -- the reason i often compare on the floor to stereo love is because of the general aesthetic of the chorus, or at least the beginning of it: suddenly soft, with breathy vocals and the beat percolating lightly in the background.

teledyldonix, Monday, 2 May 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i haven't heard that one but it still owes an obvious debt to "stereo love" -- the vocals and especially the synth textures in the chorus sound almost identical

RIP to Left Eye but Gucci's necklace is (chilli), Monday, 2 May 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

for "on the floor" obviously, not the kaoma song

RIP to Left Eye but Gucci's necklace is (chilli), Monday, 2 May 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

"La Lambada" was a huge worldwide hit (except in the US) and sold 5 million copies in 1989. But I do see how the production of "On the Floor" could be compared to "Stereo Love".

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 2 May 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

not hating this j-lo album on first listen

'run the world' is gorgeous. 'invading my mind' would be great if it was faster. 'on the floor' is classic

uberweiss, Monday, 2 May 2011 22:47 (fourteen years ago)

I love "hypnotico," "papi," "what is love" and "good hit"

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 08:45 (fourteen years ago)

int'l music almost always takes forever & a day to circle back here (another example from this year would be don omar's awesome "danza kuduro") unless it's a female singer from england, & sometimes even then

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 May 2011 04:33 (fourteen years ago)

It's cool. Even though I heard it last summer (and liked the single they did together a couple years ago), it didn't really click with me until it showed up in a gum commercial on tv recently.

1. Rolling In The Deep, Adele
2. E.T., Katy Perry Featuring Kanye West
3. The Edge Of Glory, Lady Gaga
4. Give Me Everything, Pitbull Featuring Ne-Yo, AfroJack & Nayer
5. Just Can't Get Enough, The Black Eyed Peas

Beyonce's trying to salvage her "Girls" song-- performed it on the Billboard Music Awards tonight

curmudgeon, Monday, 23 May 2011 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

is it really "salvaging" if she was going to perform her current single on the next big awards show regardless of whether it was doing well on the charts or not?

Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Monday, 23 May 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

I meant salvage the success of the song in the marketplace.

curmudgeon, Monday, 23 May 2011 12:32 (fourteen years ago)

yea i mean hello is the kind of song that is soo obvious but it works

j lol (surm), Monday, 23 May 2011 13:07 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, and my point is that "salvaging" is most likely an entirely exterior narrative, and she probably booked and started rehearsing that performance before the song was even out and would've done that song that way whether it was #1 on the charts or #100

Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Monday, 23 May 2011 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 23 May 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

how can you 'tell' when people are reacting honestly and when they're following the flock, o wise one

Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Monday, 23 May 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not so much talking about indiv reactions, more the editorial slant that leads to words like "salvaged" being bandied around, and the "this should have been the single" attitude to the new one etc.

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Monday, 23 May 2011 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

ii just think it's funny how after YEARS of big stars doing warmup singles, or simultaneous/consecutive single releases for different artists, people still freak out if the first thing they hear isn't an obvious hit. it's Beyonce, she'll have her hits.

Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Monday, 23 May 2011 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

otm. they won't kick her off columbia for one single obviously, what's the worst that can happen? she has the star power to make a few missteps, and i wouldn't consider a top-40 single as being that egregious of an error in the first place

chilli, Monday, 23 May 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i think it's the automatic conflation of commercial underperformance with "a misstep" or a mistake or something - like we all know the goal of pop is to shift units but it really has no bearing on how much i enjoy a song, and i'm disappointed in ~critical outlets~ for acting like it does

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Monday, 23 May 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

nb i have no idea how "run the world" has even done on the charts & tbh i don't care

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Monday, 23 May 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

people still freak out if the first thing they hear isn't an obvious hit. it's Beyonce, she'll have her hits.

Who is freaking out and thinks she won't have her hits? Just saying this song is not an obvious hit is not the same thing. Who is saying "this song is not at the top of the charts and therefore she won't have more hits from this upcoming album." Some Dude, you may have read more than I have about this single and maybe there are people freaking re the hit potential for the whole album, but I haven't read that.

As for the merits of the song, I kinda agree with Maura in the Voice who likes it but adds:

there's also something exhausting about it that goes beyond its cheer-team beats. It doesn't seem so much like a song as it does a collection of movements, of snippets that can be broken down into iTunes previews.

curmudgeon, Monday, 23 May 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't really get a 'nerd' sense from rebecca black at all

I hope dubstep with female vocals and lightness of touch like this and "Katy on a Mission" becomes a thing. With all the UK post-dubstep stuff splintering off into own thing entirely, something has to counterbalance the rampant macho idiocy within dubstep now.

both Drake and Mike Posner have said some kind of variation of "you said you wanna leave but I know you're gonna stay" on hit songs in the last few months, which leads me to the conclusion that that is the douchiest phrase in the English language

All the people saying it's no "Dirty Talk" are kinda right, I can't imagine this controlling my life at 2am in a gay club really, but I want to like it.

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 10:38 (fourteen years ago)

i heard it the other day, i didn't think much of it either way. i resisted "dirty talk" hard b/c of its borderline cringe-inducing verses but the chorus proved irresistible.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

jason aldean's "dirt road anthem" seems to have something of a chance of becoming a crossover pop hit -- on the heels of its recent cmt awards performance, the main version of the song AND a new remix featuring ludacris are both selling very strongly.

on a related note, how rare are country star + rapper collabs? only one i can think of off the top of my head is nelly and tim mcgraw

Oh, man. Delving back into the realm of Canadian pop music, both for Jukebox and for interest/lolz. Forgot how strange and awesome it is.

First: Simple Plan - did you guys ever get them? French-Canadian final wave of Sum41 pop punk who normally sing in English. But their lead single was released bilingually! One featuring Natasha Bedingfield, and the other featuring some Quebecois Idol chick. And I'm kind of digging it?

My favourite for sheer WTFness is still Kristina Maria, who had a song in the top 20 which is basically about kinky sex and toys and ropes and so forth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC7J3KQd1lk

but whose bio on the website I found when I Googled her in an attempt to find out who the fuck she is, tells us:

At the same time, Kristina’s love of music kept her on the right path. While some of her schoolmates in Ottawa were turning to drugs and alcohol out of boredom or not being able to find a direction in life, Kristina’s passion for music was so strong, she had no interest in the darker side of life in her hometown. “I saw people destroying their lives, and for what? It can be very difficult to resist peer pressure, or not go along with what everyone else is doing, but I knew that I wanted to be a singer and I was lucky enough to know that drinking and using drugs was not for me.”...“As soon as we met, we both felt like we had known each other for a long, long time. I was looking for somebody who really believed in me, and that was Vito.” Luprano, a father with three daughters, immediately recognized that Kristina was not only an extremely talented singer, but as a young girl who had resisted the lure of drugs and alcohol, she was a perfect role model for other teens.

Buy my album! I am a wholesome role model! Who sings about kinky sex! But I have never done drugs! In the second most boring city in Canada!

i don't know who vein is but this vein ft. pitbull song from a few years ago was great

the whole pitbull career arc is the weirdest thing. it's kinda tough to explain how he used to be really good.

i do like "give me everything" though, trust ne-yo to articulate the sense of mortality at the heart of the up-in-the-club aesthetic (one for the memento mori thread?)

whole wynter gordon album's pretty enjoyable actually

this kinda insistently pure dance pop is not usually my thing i guess (certainly least not in full-length terms) but i find she's got character

r|t|c, Friday, 17 June 2011 11:56 (fourteen years ago)

if by character i mean performance chops, latent r&b songwriter craft and a voice similar to gwen stefani's

r|t|c, Friday, 17 June 2011 11:56 (fourteen years ago)

cher lloyd was fun for 5 minutes i suppose but having her back 6 months later with this cobblers is just a bad dream

glad to hear i shouldn't have to worry about reapplying for my certificate.

it's interesting though, i've long mused that 'happiness' might be seen as a potentially something of a groundbreaking record but probably one of the main distinguishing factors in that assertion is that for an ultra-evolved streamlined american eurodance pop r&b hybrid it doesn't code as particularly homo, like there's no routinizing emancipatory release there. then again perhaps this is an overly basic way of looking at it, idk.

i kinda like swagger jagger :(((

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think it's irredeemable - beat is secretly great in a basic post-"pon de floor" way, middle 8 is just straight-up great - but the clementine interpolation just needs to not exist, it's so cringey, and the verses are waaaay underdone (even with clementine it could've been salvaged by verses with, just...more words in them)

has been very annoying having to say "yes but she has better songs than swagger jagger i promise" so much recently, very pleased this leaked.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

teledyldonix, Thursday, 4 August 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

i argued with her PR about releasing it as the lead single after hearing the other songs, he was like...none of the others would have got anywhere near the sheer attention "swagger jagger" has. idk, i think it was a given it'd chart high whatever they released, even diana vickers managed a no 1 off the back of x factor.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 04:27 (fourteen years ago)

(I'd be willing to be Elvis Crespo's "Suavemente" is the most club/radio played merengue song worldwide, since it came out in the late-90s.)

why would anyone's remix of a Drakesadpanda anthem be anyone's track of the year

lil dawg (some dude), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

Because she makes it genuinely affecting and narrated by an interesting character instead of fucking Drake.

lil dawg (some dude), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think i'd stan for that style of production but it's a bit too malleable to either love or hate as a thing - right song/singer, it comes into its own, wrong song/singer, it's execrable and lazy

kelly clarkson's single :(

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

funnily enough right after posting that i went to run an errand, and in the car one of the D.C. R&B stations was playing the JoJo version (or rather a blend of it and the Drake version). it's aight but c'mon. j0rdan calling Bieber's version of "Trust Issues" interesting prompted the same feeling in me -- like wholesome-looking young white folks doing versions of dark debauched songs by rap stars is an idea that's older than YouTube and surely has been bled dry by the last few years of webcam kids.

lil dawg (some dude), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

i was calling the bieber version of "trust issues" "interesting" in the lightest sense

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

lil dawg (some dude), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

also, for me anyway, I liked both Katy Perry and Ke$ha from the get-go and didn't start finding them annoying until subsequent songs; there is still a foundation there that is capable of producing songs I really enjoy with both of them, whereas with Drake he basically just ruins songs I otherwise love (yes I am looking at you, "What's My Name")

The guy from Mattafix has been at number one in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for the last six weeks, i think. He's playing Upstairs At The Garage on Tuesday so i guess he might be trying to build a buzz back home too.

It's your boy Romeo (with Usher), gone solo (vastly improves once the bachata kicks in):

boring video but amazing song. why this wasn't pushed more during the summer i'm not sure

uberweiss, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 11:58 (thirteen years ago)

Between her outfits in this video and the Give Me Everything nappy-thing she had for that, I'm convinced there's a stylist out there somewhere who really hates this woman.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 November 2011 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

fucking hell i heard a jessie j song (called "domino") on the radio today. are we seriously not done with her?? she sounds awful too, like it makes katy perry's vocal on "california gurls" sound like a virtuoso performance

teledyldonix, Thursday, 10 November 2011 03:08 (thirteen years ago)

yeah for some reason after her album flopped we're getting this annoying 2nd wave of promotion for her w/ "domino" and that godawful vma appearance

some dude, Thursday, 10 November 2011 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

I prefer this guest-free Romeo Santos single from the new album (to the one I posted):

don't worry if she ever breaks through and becomes ~culturally important~ j0rdan et al will suddenly come round to her

Just think of all the underground soulful r&b singers Jessie J is stealing audiences from.

Tim F, Thursday, 10 November 2011 08:37 (thirteen years ago)

don't act like you don't think people should be listening to teedra instead!

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Thursday, 10 November 2011 08:46 (thirteen years ago)

People who listen to Jessie j should be kept well away from teedra (though to be honest luxurious undergrind hasn't drawn me back much).

I've become really enamored with the googleproof New Look this week. Canadian synthpop duo with a debut lp out in Europe.

I don't think they're terribly chart friendly, but until someone starts a rolling indie electronica thread rolling pop will have to do.

I guess this is the first "real" Ruby Goe single, after some demos and self-released stuff from earlier this year and last. She's so cute I can barely take it.

Australian beardo covers Blackstreet? It's not a travesty a la Karmin or whatever, but I'm trying to figure out what about this was necessary...
