In a short amount of time, you will be able to vote in the 2010 ILM Albums 'n' Tracks poll. Here is how it will work:
*A ballot will consist of (up to) 25 album votes and (up to) 25 track votes.*Both categories will be allotted 650 total points each.*An ordered albums/tracks ballot will count the points down from 50, 48, 46...6, 4, 2.*An unordered albums/tracks ballot will have 26 points assigned to each vote.*You MUST copy + paste your votes directly from the final list(s) of nominations, as syntax is of utmost importance.*We must receive your ballot by midnight EST on Friday, January the 21st. That's 5am on the 22nd in London and 9pm on the 21st in California. If you live outside of that 8-hour umbrella, please consult a global timezone map.
Beginning the 24th, J0rdan will countdown the singles and I'll follow with albums once he finishes. As with the recent 20th century poll, our man behind the curtain is seandalai. Shower him with praise for handling the computation.
The online ballot and master nomination lists will be linked shortly so voting can begin. Thank you for participating!

This is the link for the Online Ballot. It's self-explanatory, hopefully.

I don't think J0rdan has the tracks nominations list up to date, so I'm going to wait to post the albums list until that happens.
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 3 January 2011 05:55 (fourteen years ago)
sorry i've been on vacation -- i'll be home @ like 5 est tomorrow & will update the tracks list sometime tomorrow night

Okay, that being the case, here are the links for the nominations spreadsheets again if people want to start sketching out their ballots before casting votes (keep in mind that the tracks list is incomplete):

It'd be nice if you could actually scroll down the master lists by clicking the space instead of manually moving the right-side cursor, BTW.
― slow a cat sample down 800 percent (Matos W.K.), Monday, 3 January 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)
this looks very well organized but can't get to the spreadsheets so can u just post the final list to noms thread?
― max bro'd (nakhchivan), Monday, 3 January 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)
Matos, what browser are you using? That works fine in Firefox.
― tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Monday, 3 January 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)
When J0rdan gets the tracks list updated, I'm going to take both lists out of the spreadsheets and make a simple webpage with both lists on it.

It is on the list, under THE Chemical Brothers.
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 3 January 2011 22:22 (fourteen years ago)
i found everything i wanted to vote for just fine, but i mean if you guys don't have everything ready to the point that you're 100% cool with people voting now, why start the thread and post links to vote already?
― hann am0n tana (some dude), Monday, 3 January 2011 22:37 (fourteen years ago)
I started it before I knew J0rdan was out of town. My bad.
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 3 January 2011 22:38 (fourteen years ago)
eh it's cool. things looked complete enough that i don't imagine whatever's missing will cause a whole lot of trouble for early voters.
― hann am0n tana (some dude), Monday, 3 January 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)
so wait, you can do 25 albums AND 25 tracks?
― darwin deej (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 3 January 2011 22:49 (fourteen years ago)
Yep.
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 3 January 2011 22:59 (fourteen years ago)
for the albums is the formatting supposed to be Artist - Album
because i'm getting weird formatting when i copy directly from the spreadsheet, dunno if thats gonna screw it up or if its what you want
― ciderpress, Monday, 3 January 2011 23:31 (fourteen years ago)
I think Johnny is going to copy it into a different format eventually, if I understood one his comments earlier in this thread. I'm waiting for that.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 3 January 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago)
I don't understand how best to copy from the spreadsheet either. Would all the extra spacing that results be acceptable?
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 3 January 2011 23:34 (fourteen years ago)
If you're copying directly from the albums spreadsheet, just select all 3 columns (including the em dash), then copy and paste.
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 3 January 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)
Okay, but that looks weird.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 3 January 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)
alright thanks. and for the E-40 do i just vote for 1 of them and they'll get merged? or should i wait until that's updated on the list
― ciderpress, Monday, 3 January 2011 23:48 (fourteen years ago)
lol, sorry everyone
tracks list is now updated
― J0rdan S., Monday, 3 January 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)
there were about 30 tracks or so added to the spreadsheet for those that already voted
― J0rdan S., Monday, 3 January 2011 23:53 (fourteen years ago)
oh noooo the besnard lakes album wasn't nominated ;________;
― BIG HOOTY aka the Sapperticker (electricsound), Monday, 3 January 2011 23:57 (fourteen years ago)
is no one going to point out that copy and pasting 50 things individually from a spreadsheet is like an enormous pain in the ass and possibly a waste of time?
― darwin deej (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)
or is that "trolling"
It's not that much more time consuming than typing it out or cut-and-pasting from some other source. if you want to "waste" your time on it, do it, if you don't don't.
― hann am0n tana (some dude), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:06 (fourteen years ago)
i already made a list, why can't i just copy and paste that?

― BIG HOOTY aka the Sapperticker (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:13 (fourteen years ago)
because they're using a script to count ballots and it's not smart enough to guess that "Rick Ross - Super High Remix" is the same as "Rick Ross - Super High (Remix)" is the same as "Rick Ross - Super High feat. Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa" etc etc so the idea is to standardize each nom
i'm sure its possible to integrate the nominations list into the voting form but no one's done it yet since its a bit of work
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)
Whiney is right, it's a huge pain in the ass. I don't mind doing it, but it might get less voters than easier to vote for polls.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)
it was the same system last year iirc except that the spreadsheet lists were posted at the top of this thread too (and there were fewer noms so the lists weren't as massive)
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:19 (fourteen years ago)
Suggestion:
- number your favourite albums in the noms spreadsheet in column 2 (e.g. 1 to 50)- order the list by colum 2- copy and past the entire block into the ballot field
― Tim F, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)
It was too much work voting for the albums. I gave up after them. :P
― Mordy, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)
It's really not that much work.
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:53 (fourteen years ago)
Things that will make the scoring and my life easier:
- Artists/titles that exactly match the spreadsheet. Spacing doesn't matter. I'll have to fix any other discrepancies manually, which will make me sad.- Please don't include numerical ranks or numbers of points allocated. They'll be ignored anyway and make the matching-to-shortlist messier.
Thanks!

hey guys i guarantee that however much work you think it is to take noms from the spreadsheet to paste into the ballot, it's about 10% as much work as it takes to put the spreadsheet together in the first place -- and that's not really that much work to begin with
so stop whining

I noticed this album on the nomination list:
Regina — Puutarhatrilogia
At least in Finland it came out in February 2009, so it probably should be disqualified, unless it got a worldwide release only in 2010.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:01 (fourteen years ago)
Also, the tracks list has this:
ätkäjätkät - Pikkulintu

― fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)
well there's a dropdown menu at the top where you can choose whether or not you want it to be ranked or not
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 January 2011 21:18 (fourteen years ago)
if either of you submitted ballots i can check to see what we have down for you & if it's wrong i can email you back your picks & you can re-submit
I just went back and fixed Revenue Retrievin' in the spreadsheet to being all-encompassing like it was in the txt file, and fixed it on the associated ballots as well. Now, a vote for either Day Shift or Night Shift will count towards the whole project.
Not having heard it, is there a reason it's split in two (or is there a reason people in the nominations thread wanted to combine it)?
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 6 January 2011 08:59 (fourteen years ago)
well it was a double album of sorts i guess -- released on the same day under the same title but sold separately -- it could really go either way i guess whether or not they're separate releases but i suspect ppl want it to be combined so both don't suffer from vote splitting
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 January 2011 09:01 (fourteen years ago)
i'm unlikely to vote for more than ten albums & 15-20 tracks so do i still use the 650 points?
if so couldn't someone vote for one album and give it 650 points and therefore horribly skew the results?
― jed_, Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)
Dudes, 'Mixing Up The Medicine' is on the list both under Yelawolf (feat. Juelz Santana) and Juelz Santa (feat. Yelawolf).
― Matt DC, Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)
650 is the maximum number of points you can award; if you just have one album in your list it will get either 26 points (if you picked "unweighted") or 50 points (if you picked "weighted"). As this example shows, you should pick "weighted" if you have a short list (with < 13 items, everything gets more than 26 points).
― Tarzan Bot (seandalai), Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)
Lol Juelz Santa.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)
cheers seandalai, so 50 is the maximum attributable points regardless of how many albums i list (prob ten or so)?
― jed_, Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)
If you list 10 items in a weighted ballot, your #1 will get 50 points, #2 will get 48, #10 will get 32.
― Tarzan Bot (seandalai), Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:56 (fourteen years ago)
re E-40: You could also buy both albums together as a single package.
― tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
Done! Phew!! Almost reduced to tears when I realised, despite plenty of opportunities to do so, that I had neglected to nominate Gucci's 'Normal' for the tracks list. My final cut was 'Goomba Pimpin' which I really wanted to include solely for the (pause) before "true story", but alas it was not to be.Gotta give a nod to Lex for the number of tracks on both my longlist and final ballot that I first heard due to his quarterly reports. Many thanks to Johnny Fever, Jrdan, and seandalai for taking the time and trouble to do this. Cheers.

Yeah, txt versions were linked here: THE 2010 ILM SUPER-MEGA YEAR-END ALBUMS 'N' TRACKS POLL™ - VOTING IS OPEN THRU MIDNIGHT EST FRIDAY, JANUARY 21st 2011

I'm busy with the metal poll which is coming to a conclusion shortly but as soon as the results are finished rolling out (next friday) I'll work on my ballot.
If anyone else wants to vote you have until sunday night.~~~~VOTE IN THE 2010 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR (METAL EDITION) POLL~~~ Voting Ends Sunday Jan 9th
All voters welcome!ps johnny wheres your vote?
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)
ps johnny wheres your vote?
I don't think I've even heard 15 albums on your list.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)
Johnny - just let me fill in the rest like you did for me on the all-time poll.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 7 January 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)
Okay, that's a good idea.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)
i think people will object to ez snappin having 2 votes, sorry
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)
Well, in that case, EZ just recommended me some albums to listen to, but because I trust his judgement so much, I'm going to go ahead and vote for them.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)
John & glenn wont approve im sure either. It could influence the end results if he includes albums ,especially ones on his own ballot. and I would rather avoid the shitstorm.
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)
So if Paul listens to and likes the stuff it's invalid? Really? How is that different than my listening to something Glenn or John recommends - they turn me on to way more stuff than I find on my own.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 7 January 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)
How would people feel if pauly allows people to let others finish ballots off in this poll?
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)
Well, people here can vote for one album if they want without arbitrary 15 minimum bullshit. No need to pad it out.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 7 January 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)
The difference here is that I haven't asked any person in particular to vote. You asked me, so I voted. Just pretend that EZ recommended I hear these albums over the course of last year (which he basically did, counting down his 2010 list on his tumblr). My vote will count! I'm resting assured.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:08 (fourteen years ago)
xp that's ALSO true
So it's perfectly ok for other ilxors to collude and boost albums in their ballots?
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)
Sure the concept of a targeted voting block isn't a new thing to you. How do you think Taylor Swift always ends up in the high reaches of the tracks polls?
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)
Well I'm sure taylor (and other bands) fans might agree to put her/them high in the ballot, but I doubt any of them actually fill out each others ballots.
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)
I filled out my own ballot. I showed EZ my first 6 choices, and he sent me back a list of 9 other recommendations (all of which I've heard at least a little bit of) that I put in the order of my choosing. THAT IS A LEGITIMATE BALLOT.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)
I didn't even recommend my favorite album of the year, which I would surely do if it was about stuffing a ballot or gaming the system. After years of friendship I knew he wouldn't like it.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 7 January 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)
Sure it's too late to change now, but you've got the Moon Wiring Club album in as 'Moon Writing Club'. I doubt it's gonna place but would be nice if it could be corrected if you post the full run-down at the end.
― emil.y, Friday, 7 January 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)
Is that an album or track? I'll fix it on the txt file (and if it's an album, I'll fix it on the spreadsheet).
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:38 (fourteen years ago)
It's an album. Thanks!
― emil.y, Friday, 7 January 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)
wow dudes thats kind of an annoying thing to do tbh - pretty sure you arent going to dig it if me and a bunch of other dudes all collude on identical all metal ballots for this poll.
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)
Here's how I view all these email/ballot mega polls: it's all about the process. The nominations/voting/countdown periods are all that really matters. A week after they're over, nobody really remembers (or cares) what places where outside of the top five. They're impermanent and that's the great thing about them. People talk, people discover things, people shit on other people's favorites, and people find out other people might like things they thought only they liked. We're not writing a constitution here. Just goofing around.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)
pretty sure you arent going to dig it if me and a bunch of other dudes all collude on identical all metal ballots for this poll.
There's no need. If you only want to vote for one or two albums in the regular year-end poll, that's your choice. I still maintain my metal ballot is legitimate, but it would be even more so if I could just vote for my six favorites. Furthermore, I might not have even voted if I wasn't directly asked to.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)
i mean if you really havent heard more than 6 of the albums on that list then maybe just dont vote i guess? idk, im not going to freak out since ive been way to busy to really help out much with the metal poll this time around, but it really doesnt seem very fair to me.
xpost yeah but gaming the system kinda ruins that whole roll out/discovery thing because the stuff EZ digs is kinda overrepresented. whatever you picked for your seventh spot just decreased the chances of anything other people have from 8-40 getting on the list.
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)
yknow a lot of this kinda comes back to the whole fact that if you dont like the rules someone establishes for a poll, dont vote in it. not sure why theres any need to cast a protest vote because you only want to vote for 6 albums and that isnt allowed. its pfunks poll and he can do what he wants imo.
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)
anyway i didnt mean to derail yer poll thread, we can talk about it on the metal poll thread instead if you want.
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:52 (fourteen years ago)
It wasn't a protest vote. If I lived next door to EZ, I probably would've gone over to his house this afternoon and said, "hey, you know my tastes pretty well...help me figure out nine more albums to vote for here" and then we would've sat around for an hour or two listening to cds.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)
I've allowed his votes and i just hope noone complains that I did and we dont end up with a "this poll is fixed" clusterfuck like last time.
I'd rather draw a line under this.
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)
but you didnt sit around and listen to them for a few hours, you voted within minutes of getting the list from him, which isnt the same thing.
whatever ive got shit to do. i still think its lame as hell tho.
xpost yeah btw the fact that this just came from a dude that accused us of rigging the all time metal poll is completely fucked btw
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)
heh apologies for the aggro there and also the overuse of btw abbrev
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)
The rigging accusation was based on a huge misunderstanding (and I'm still embarrassed about that). Kerr said the metal thread people weren't participating, but he only meant a *few* metal thread people instead of *no* metal thread people. I understood it to be *no* metal thread people, so when all these very non-mainstream, very purist *metal* albums/songs began showing up, something seemed fishy. Turns out I wasn't correct about the electorate's proclivities before the countdown(s) began.

the metal-related clusterfuck upthread is just lame guys, i mean, if you think every person submitting your arbitrary 15+ album requirement has heard all their albums start to finish, you're probably wrong. if you want johnny to only vote for what he's heard in full, then let him submit a 6 album ballot (or 1 album for that matter!)
blows my mind why you'd set a minimum # of votes, then berate ppl for casting ballots that are not as fully informed further down their rankings
― ilxor this could be a standout thread for you imo (ilxor), Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:04 (fourteen years ago)
He was only being "berated" for letting someone else fill out his ballot for him - meaning 1 peson voted for some albums twice. Nothing to do with him being fully informed or not. Anyway it's all been sorted out so stop shit stirring, especially when you're so way off the mark.

I'm probably not, and I already stated my ballot probably shouldn't count, but AG wants to keep it in anyway. Bothers me no longer.
In THIS poll, we've already received 44 ballots in just under a week. Almost two weeks of voting left, so maybe we can top 100 this year?

It's all ok. Most people are fine with it, no-one is really objecting. It wont affect the top albums I don't think, maybe it will affect lower down places, but it seems no-one cares so it's fine. ― Dans la Bot (seandalai), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)
True, but they never do. And we do generally vote for a lot of non-metal in our ballots when we do. But I think if 80 metallers voted in this poll, there would be a shitload of complaints about the results. Metal is still generally looked down upon/frowned against on ILM unless its Wire or PFM approved.Plus a guitar band has never won the ILM EOY poll.
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)
Of course the funny thing is, is that some metal thread regulars wont vote as the results are "too arty or indie".
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)
There are a shitload of complaints about the results every year. At least the metal arm of Ilx would make a change.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)
80 straight-line metal ballots would be odd, but presumably whatever reaches the top of the Metal poll should have a good shot at doing well here.
― Dans la Bot (seandalai), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:00 (fourteen years ago)
If you want metallers to vote then the poll organisers should advertise this poll over in the rolling metal thread and metal poll results thread and encourage them to vote. (i.e. they wont listen to me)
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:01 (fourteen years ago)
I dont think the winner of previous metal polls have gone top 20 have they?
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:02 (fourteen years ago)
the general feeling is that the EOY polls are more pop orientated so there's no point in voting "niche" stuff, even though the goons manage to organise themselves which surely disproves that point. But if you advertise on the rolling niche threads and encourage them, then you should get a lot more ballots giving the poll a more well rounded balance?
One of the reasons the metal poll does a top 100 is so less well known stuff gets noticed and discovered and it's not just about the big releases. If the EOY poll expanded to 100, then a lot of voters would feel their vote counted and would be happy to see stuff get their 5 minutes of fame so to speak. The 51-100 in the EOY always has lots of great stuff so it would in no way dilute the quality.
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)
characterizing ILM end-of-year polls as all about "pop" with no room for "niche" artists is pretty ridiculous

― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

― some dude, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:13 (fourteen years ago)
Anyway by doing a full top 100 rollout would definitely help.
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)
i'd be in favour of a top 100 rollout, but that's really a matter for the people running it w/r/t the additional work they'll have to do for it - if they can't or don't want to take that on it's up to them.
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)
I don't actually, you know, ~care~ if the metal contingent forms a voting bloc (I mean, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be voting for nothing that gets in the metal 100), I just figure it'd be different. No biggie.
Is it not usually a top 100? There are so many polls these days that all give themselves different rules...

The eoy polls have always been top 50. 100 would be cool tho.

― Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)
There's some sort of poll going on, you should totally vote in it!
― Dans la Bot (seandalai), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:48 (fourteen years ago)
Okay, I'm a bit lost. If I copy and paste a full line from the spreadsheet in googledocs, it looks very messy with huge spaces everywhere. I take it this isn't how you guys want it submitted? Should I be saving this as an excel spreadsheet and then pasting it in?
― Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)
It may look messy when you enter it, but it comes out fine on our end. (And that's only for the albums spreadsheet...J0rdan did it the simple way on the tracks spreadsheet.)

lol have you always had this grossout sense of humor or am i just noticing it more now - like on your countdown you said you lobbied for an "anal fister" weird al song and just the other day you said something else seemingly out of character

no ksh
― fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)
But in those text versions, the albums list has a huge space between the artist name and the record title, whereas the tracks list doesn't. So should I keep the formatting of the album list when I copy and paste my ballot to the online voting form, or should I remove the spaces so both the album and track list look the same?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 09:24 (fourteen years ago)
Nope, don't remove the spaces when pasting the albums in. It's because J0rdan and I designed our spreadsheets differently, but the syntax needs to be the same for all albums and the same for all tracks.
Like I said above, it may look funny when you paste it in, but it comes through on our end looking perfectly fine.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 10:27 (fourteen years ago)
2008 albums poll had an absolute truckload of curveballs and bizarre choices in it, it doesn't always lean pop at all, it depends on the year to an extent.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 11:31 (fourteen years ago)
i'd be in favour of a top 100 rollout

― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 13:02 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, this. Much as I like seeing a longer list, there's not much point if we've got stuff coming in with only a couple of votes. As long as we get to see the master list at the end, anyway.
I've really got to get mine sorted out soon!

The three polls I've run (70s albums, 2005-09 albums/tracks w/ J0rdan and the 20th century poll) have all gotten more than 80. I'd be surprised if this one doesn't. (Polls always tend to attract the same pool of posters/voters)

― vampire weekend fan (acoleuthic), Thursday, 20 January 2011 10:09 (fourteen years ago)
acoleuthic, you have multiple votes in the current top 50...
Another reason why you should all vote is that the results are far from settled: I have absolutely no idea what is going to win one of the polls, and albums/tracks are pinging up and down the rankings as more ballots come in.

Since this is my first time voting in one of ILM's EOY polls, could someone please explain to me the purpose of having a nomination thread a month prior to the actual voting? Doesn't this just prevent people from voting for albums and artists that they may have heard for the first time in the month lull?

Reason for nominations - to give the thing structure by narrowing the field a bit. The freeform 90s poll, much as I enjoyed it, was a fiasco - the no.1 got only one vote.
Reason for doing it a month in advance - to allow a month for voting. Ballots trickle in but slowly.
Anyway, if it doesn't get nominated because no one likes it enough until the following year, the chances are it's not going to win.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 20 January 2011 16:50 (fourteen years ago)
don't know about everybody else, but my list of favorites continues to change. I continue to hear new stuff, even since I voted, that given a month or two of listening might have made my top 25

― Gukbe, Thursday, 20 January 2011 18:14 (fourteen years ago)
i've heard plenty of new great stuff, but only two albums that would've rocketed into my top 25 had i heard them both in time (emeralds, max richter). otherwise i'm still pretty set on my favorites... no idea what i'd eliminate to make room for those two, btw.
― ilxor, Thursday, 20 January 2011 18:18 (fourteen years ago)
Anyone who's worried about premature voting can hold out until the last day (tomorrow!)...if I hadn't already voted I would probably have found space for the Umberto album, but ultimately that decision woudn't have made any difference to the results.
― Can your monkey do the Bot? (seandalai), Thursday, 20 January 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)
yeah I didnt hear the Umberto until I voted either. Right upmy alley that is. Will be definitely buying the LP
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 20 January 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

― Can your monkey do the Bot? (seandalai), Thursday, 20 January 2011 18:30 (fourteen years ago)
hah, I wouldn't have voted on an album id only heard once, that would be daft, but if i had checked it out a month ago then it would've been top 5 probably for me if my initial impressions stayed the same over repeated listens. One year Zombi will make the EOY poll.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 20 January 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

I think ILM's poll results this year are going to diverge enough from other lists to be interesting, though it will still look fairly familiar. I'm hoping for a couple specific surprises.
― _Rudipherous_, Thursday, 20 January 2011 20:48 (fourteen years ago)
people who think kanye's not gonna be #1 are in for a very specific surprise
― ilxor, Thursday, 20 January 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)
don't let me down ilx
― kate bush fan (acoleuthic), Thursday, 20 January 2011 21:51 (fourteen years ago)
I can't decide whether to add Kanye in at the bottom or not. I've got a good top 20 list, it's the last 5 that are killing me.
― emil.y, Thursday, 20 January 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)
Kanye not being #1 was not the specific surprise I was expecting (though I don't feel certain he's a lock for #1--top 3, yeah--but that could easily be me being out of touch).
― _Rudipherous_, Thursday, 20 January 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)
was majeure nominated? it is a 2009 record iirc
― saturday nose fever (electricsound), Thursday, 20 January 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 20 January 2011 22:01 (fourteen years ago)
it did, don't think it got nominated anyway
― saturday nose fever (electricsound), Thursday, 20 January 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

The 2nd point I understand completely. The 3rd I just don't care about; I don't vote for an album strategically or because I'm hoping it will end up on the list. I make a list and want it to represent my preferences; wherever the albums end up should reflect the consensus of the community. i.e. whether or not it "wins" is unimportant to me.
While I understand your latter two points, your first doesn't really make sense to me. The list of albums contains hundreds and hundreds of albums, many of which (a majority?) will receive either one or zero votes. Allowing another (maybe) two-dozen albums to be voted on would suddenly make the process a "fiasco"? How?
I'm not a music journalist, so I'm curious to know: are other EOY lists made with an exclusive nomination period in the same fashion, or is this just an ILM thing?
― Indexed, Friday, 21 January 2011 01:19 (fourteen years ago)
I also want to be clear that I'm not trying to be an ass or a whiner. I'm cool with the process and am happy to be a part of it, but am more so curious to know for what reason things are done this way.
― Indexed, Friday, 21 January 2011 01:20 (fourteen years ago)
I find the nominations process best as a memory refresher tbh.

― whole lotta cocorosie (electricsound), Friday, 21 January 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)
the nominations process is a bit arcane now with the volume of stuff that gets nominated, but it still ensures that everyone has the exact same name/spelling on everything so that the votes can be counted by a script instead of hand-counted
― ciderpress, Friday, 21 January 2011 02:41 (fourteen years ago)
This might be a minor point, but the nomination process also stops people from voting on things that wouldn't qualify (like realeses from previous years, etc.).
― monster_xero, Friday, 21 January 2011 05:43 (fourteen years ago)
After an awesome day at work going through my tracks shortlist, I have painfully whittled them down, ordered them, and my ballot should be sent. I copied and pasted from the TXT list into my text editor and then made cuts and ordered them before pasting the final list onto the ballot. If this has caused any problems please let me know by the morning or else I won't have time to resend my ballot before work. I want my vote to count, dammit.
― Gukbe, Friday, 21 January 2011 07:19 (fourteen years ago)

― Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2011 07:21 (fourteen years ago)

Got it. Looks fine. xps
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 07:21 (fourteen years ago)
also looking back over my lists I am just so p4k. will do better next year.
― Gukbe, Friday, 21 January 2011 07:23 (fourteen years ago)
We've got over 90 ballots now, btw. I dunno how big the EOY polls have been over the last few years, but that's the most votes any poll I've ever been involved with has gotten.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 07:26 (fourteen years ago)
I think the aim should be to break 100. I think there are usually a lot of last-minute entries but then maybe that was just me.
― Gukbe, Friday, 21 January 2011 07:27 (fourteen years ago)
I know the early ILM polls got a lot more than 100, but there were SO MANY people around back then. I just checked the 2007 poll for a more modern parallel, and there were 64 ballots cast.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 07:30 (fourteen years ago)
You might want to changing the title to CLOSES TODAY or smthng

Done.
― Matt DC, Friday, 21 January 2011 11:18 (fourteen years ago)
Done! The fact that there are 25 albums and tracks added together (rather than 25 of each) does not mean I've misunderstood the rules, I've just been a bit out of the loop this year + also only voted for what I *really* felt like giving a vote.

― skip, Friday, 21 January 2011 17:29 (fourteen years ago)
i wonder if any of the metal poll voters bothered to do this. I tried to persuade them but i think the ones who did are the ones who always take part in this poll anyway. Feel free to try to persuade anyone on the rolling metal thread to participate. the fact that there might be a top 100 might persuade people to vote as there's a better chance of their vote being represented (same for other niche genres)
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 January 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

me too. How strictly is the 12am deadline being enforced? (and I am assuming that is US EST?) Like, if I turn it in sometime b/w 1 and 3, will I be disqualified? I haven't talked to J0rdan yet, but I would assume that since we have 105 ballots (and counting) with about 7.5 hours of voting left that we're probably going to expand to rollout/countdown to a number greater than 50 (maybe 100? dunno...haven't seen whether or not the results are interesting enough to support that).
Anyway, this means you SHOULD vote for tracks if you WANT TO vote for tracks.

Was pretty sad that there was no Endless Falls by Loscil in the albums noms, definitely a top ten for me.
Also bummed that the both Maserati's 'Pyramid of the Moon' and Oneohtrix Point Never's 'Returnal' were only nommed in their remixed versions, which I didn't really care for much at all.

xxp - yeah, I regret nominating only the POTM Field remix, even tho I prefer it to the original. I meant to emend that before, but forgot. Upon reflection, it would have been better to nom the original track, even tho I would have technically been voting for the remix, basically just to keep from splitting votes or alienating them altogether (as seems to be the case w/ you).

maybe? but imo if it gets enough points to place this year than whatever (i'm not sure where it's ranked right now) -- i guess we could just take it out of the list but then those voters would've lost a vote & potentially a lot of points since we're not gonna recalculate the ballots at this point

ilx must have got bigger and bigger in recent years as the metal poll has went from 30 ballots in 1st year to 50 last year to 80 this year. And the big poll has got bigger each year too.
Wonder if that will mean more consensus for P&J type bands with niche artists squeezed out or the opposite? Hopefully the latter. With the metal poll it's pretty fair to say the more niche-y acts did better than in magazine polls.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 22 January 2011 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 22 January 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)
don't know the numbers but ILX has always seemed to grow in membership from year to year, and the % of poll participation has definitely grown too. the # of metal poll voters seems high -- are there really 80 metal thread regulars or have metal fans who don't usually post here caught wind of the poll and started participating?
― gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)
there is in no way 80 metal thread regular posters, however many of those who participated also did so in the all-time poll, and even some of those took part in last years poll, but for some reason they only lurk. Why they don't post but lurk for a year or 2 is beyond me. It seems like a lot of people use the thread as a good trustworthy guide yet are somehow put off from posting.ILX is clearly a lot bigger than we all realise. For every regular poster there must be way more lurkers.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 22 January 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)
The original placed, not the remix.

― Can your monkey do the Bot? (seandalai), Saturday, 22 January 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)
Also judging by the ballots, they cant have come from a band site or anything as the ballots are all over the place stylistically, in other words, they look like an ilxors ballot.

Sceptical as to out importance & influence outside of metal - if we had hundreds of lurkers the page view stats would be a lot bigger surely?
― Ismael Klata, Saturday, 22 January 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
is there any way to see page views?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 22 January 2011 17:15 (fourteen years ago)
most read threads
It's only for the past hour, but it usually looks similar to this (one or two in hundreds then a medium-length tail)
― Ismael Klata, Saturday, 22 January 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)
Excellent job, seandalai! Thank you.
Looks like we're going to Top 75s, folks. Tune in Monday.

no 100?

fine with 75! all about the amount of work j.fever and j.sarge can put in innit. we'll get the full list at the end.

― Mordy, Saturday, 22 January 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)
should do top 77 imo
― ciderpress, Saturday, 22 January 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)
there is in no way 80 metal thread regular posters, however many of those who participated also did so in the all-time poll, and even some of those took part in last years poll, but for some reason they only lurk. Why they don't post but lurk for a year or 2 is beyond me. It seems like a lot of people use the thread as a good trustworthy guide yet are somehow put off from posting.
I think the Rolling threads intimidate lurkers because they're full of critics and they move so fast--with discussion of new albums usually already dead by the time of the commercial release date.
― President Keyes, Saturday, 22 January 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)
188 points and 10 voters (and it's metal too!), but it's a slight anomaly in the sub-75 region of the results. You'll be able to see everything from 76 onwards after the countdown. Not a big deal.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 22 January 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)
there's definitely a lot of ILM lurkers who only show up for polls

yet we wonder why metal posters don't vote in this poll despite telling them their vote will count.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 22 January 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)
anyway if there's loads of ties between 76-99 then fair enough.

Don't get butthurt over it. Their vote counted enough to get it at #100, but I'm only rolling out a top 75 (which still contains metal representation).

ILX EOYs are always the best lists no matter what...at least in this decade...
it's true that metal tends to place a little lower than it should, but still just the fact that we've got top 50s with both Electrik Red and Sunn0))), or with Badu and Wayne and Earth and Torche, along with the regular ol' P4k stuff, just warms the cockles of my heart.

lex's post was doofy but as j0rdan explained in that rap thread ppl specifically & repeatedly asked rolling goon thread to compile a list of music we recommended & if thats 'elitist' well i prefer the 'elitist' voting structure that isn't going to catapult big boi to the top of the poll like every other critics poll on earth
― *gets the power* (deej), Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)
does anyone legitimately have a problem with how u guys did that?
because i would like that person to explain themselves.
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)
maybe the big boi album is rated so highly b/c it is really fucking good
― beer, beer, beer (Pillbox), Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:43 (fourteen years ago)
i think thats unlikely the whole story
― ogmor, Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:45 (fourteen years ago)
tim f addressed that fallacy somewhere else & im trying to find it to C+P
― *gets the power* (deej), Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:48 (fourteen years ago)
basically it was along the lines of, consensus amongst a group of critics does not convey some kind of larger objective truth except as relates to what those group of critics think. i mean i like 'everyday people' fine for what it is but does anyone really think that was one of the whatever best rap songs the year it came out
― *gets the power* (deej), Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)
hey man I have absolutely zero problem with the way you guys ran the goon poll, but secret ballots were OBVIOUSLY gonna ruffle some feathers in this crowd. You guys did what you had to to get the results you wanted, and good for you, but there's gonna be some collateral damage to doing things like that, and all the sniping is part of that...
― amphetamine enhanced scholar (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)
maybe the big boi record was p much the lone '10 rap album in a lot of uk stores b/c it is really fucking good
― ogmor, Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:52 (fourteen years ago)
the only "secret" thing i did was email a ballot btw
― zvookster, Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:53 (fourteen years ago)
like in this thread's poll
― zvookster, Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:54 (fourteen years ago)
speaking strictly subjectively & not as an analysis of the broader critical consensus: I've listened to at least a third of the albums that placed in the goon poll & I would still rate the BB the rest. This would include Yelawolf, Waka, Kanye, Mellowhype, & KRIT - all of which I liked enough to include in my ilx albums ballot.
― beer, beer, beer (Pillbox), Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:56 (fourteen years ago)
*above the rest*
YES ^^
even the lolgoons couldn't coordinate 15 fuckin ballots closely enough to drop that shit past #5

ppl ppl deej didn't really like the big boi, ilxor is a dick, goons essentially made a recommendations list that some of y'all are pissy you didn't get invited into voting for, metal is p lame, wu-tang is for the children, markers 4 president.

No one acknowledged it upthread, but J0rdan mentioned that he and I have decided to count down the top 77 in each category. 100 is too many, 75 too few...so 77 it is (thanks to ciderpress for the idea).

idk if anyone who didn't vote in the hh poll cared that much about voting in it (maybe some trad rap ppl?), else they would have contribbed more to the rlvnt threads and then presumably could have voted
the idea of a restricted ballot determined by ilm gatekeeper whiney von wein /is/ pretty gauche and the surprise that ppl took umbrage was pretty lol
then again i guess i might actually investigate some of it if i can get round to d/ling rap albums not by raekwon, ghost or young jeezy :x
― taiga mutha (nakhchivan), Sunday, 23 January 2011 12:44 (fourteen years ago)
my surprise umbrage took on the novel form of SBing everyone involved in that poll. felt pretty good, too--like that nice clean sensation you get after washing you hands with a decent bar of soap (y'know, the kind that doesn't leave any filmy residue, natch).
― Ioannis, Sunday, 23 January 2011 13:44 (fourteen years ago)
not that i would have voted had the poll been open to us dum unwashed troglodytes, mind u--it was just the principle of the thing.

Cosign the countdown schedule, the top 10 coming out on a Friday night in the UK has been a perennial frustration with these things. Should enliven an otherwise dull Monday evening as well.
