THE 2010 ILM SUPER-MEGA YEAR-END ALBUMS 'N' TRACKS POLL™ - VOTING CLOSED

In a short amount of time, you will be able to vote in the 2010 ILM Albums 'n' Tracks poll. Here is how it will work:

*A ballot will consist of (up to) 25 album votes and (up to) 25 track votes.
*Both categories will be allotted 650 total points each.
*An ordered albums/tracks ballot will count the points down from 50, 48, 46...6, 4, 2.
*An unordered albums/tracks ballot will have 26 points assigned to each vote.
*You MUST copy + paste your votes directly from the final list(s) of nominations, as syntax is of utmost importance.
*We must receive your ballot by midnight EST on Friday, January the 21st. That's 5am on the 22nd in London and 9pm on the 21st in California. If you live outside of that 8-hour umbrella, please consult a global timezone map.

Beginning the 24th, J0rdan will countdown the singles and I'll follow with albums once he finishes. As with the recent 20th century poll, our man behind the curtain is seandalai. Shower him with praise for handling the computation.

The online ballot and master nomination lists will be linked shortly so voting can begin. Thank you for participating!

If you're copying directly from the albums spreadsheet, just select all 3 columns (including the em dash), then copy and paste.

It's not that much more time consuming than typing it out or cut-and-pasting from some other source. if you want to "waste" your time on it, do it, if you don't don't.

because they're using a script to count ballots and it's not smart enough to guess that "Rick Ross - Super High Remix" is the same as "Rick Ross - Super High (Remix)" is the same as "Rick Ross - Super High feat. Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa" etc etc so the idea is to standardize each nom

i'm sure its possible to integrate the nominations list into the voting form but no one's done it yet since its a bit of work

Whiney is right, it's a huge pain in the ass. I don't mind doing it, but it might get less voters than easier to vote for polls.

it was the same system last year iirc except that the spreadsheet lists were posted at the top of this thread too (and there were fewer noms so the lists weren't as massive)

Suggestion:

- number your favourite albums in the noms spreadsheet in column 2 (e.g. 1 to 50)
- order the list by colum 2
- copy and past the entire block into the ballot field

- Artists/titles that exactly match the spreadsheet. Spacing doesn't matter. I'll have to fix any other discrepancies manually, which will make me sad.
- Please don't include numerical ranks or numbers of points allocated. They'll be ignored anyway and make the matching-to-shortlist messier.

Yeah, that was my #25 on my real list, but with many of them not being nominated here, Besnard Lakes would've moved up to about #14.

When does P&J get published, btw? During musically's years of doing this, she included P&J and Pitchfork rankings with each entry for context.

I just went back and fixed Revenue Retrievin' in the spreadsheet to being all-encompassing like it was in the txt file, and fixed it on the associated ballots as well. Now, a vote for either Day Shift or Night Shift will count towards the whole project.

well it was a double album of sorts i guess -- released on the same day under the same title but sold separately -- it could really go either way i guess whether or not they're separate releases but i suspect ppl want it to be combined so both don't suffer from vote splitting

i'm unlikely to vote for more than ten albums & 15-20 tracks so do i still use the 650 points?

Dudes, 'Mixing Up The Medicine' is on the list both under Yelawolf (feat. Juelz Santana) and Juelz Santa (feat. Yelawolf).

650 is the maximum number of points you can award; if you just have one album in your list it will get either 26 points (if you picked "unweighted") or 50 points (if you picked "weighted"). As this example shows, you should pick "weighted" if you have a short list (with < 13 items, everything gets more than 26 points).

If you list 10 items in a weighted ballot, your #1 will get 50 points, #2 will get 48, #10 will get 32.

re E-40: You could also buy both albums together as a single package.

Done! Phew!! Almost reduced to tears when I realised, despite plenty of opportunities to do so, that I had neglected to nominate Gucci's 'Normal' for the tracks list. My final cut was 'Goomba Pimpin' which I really wanted to include solely for the (pause) before "true story", but alas it was not to be.
Gotta give a nod to Lex for the number of tracks on both my longlist and final ballot that I first heard due to his quarterly reports.

I filled out my own ballot. I showed EZ my first 6 choices, and he sent me back a list of 9 other recommendations (all of which I've heard at least a little bit of) that I put in the order of my choosing. THAT IS A LEGITIMATE BALLOT.

I didn't even recommend my favorite album of the year, which I would surely do if it was about stuffing a ballot or gaming the system. After years of friendship I knew he wouldn't like it.

Sure it's too late to change now, but you've got the Moon Wiring Club album in as 'Moon Writing Club'. I doubt it's gonna place but would be nice if it could be corrected if you post the full run-down at the end.

Here's how I view all these email/ballot mega polls: it's all about the process. The nominations/voting/countdown periods are all that really matters. A week after they're over, nobody really remembers (or cares) what places where outside of the top five. They're impermanent and that's the great thing about them. People talk, people discover things, people shit on other people's favorites, and people find out other people might like things they thought only they liked. We're not writing a constitution here. Just goofing around.

There's no need. If you only want to vote for one or two albums in the regular year-end poll, that's your choice. The rigging accusation was based on a huge misunderstanding (and I'm still embarrassed about that). Kerr said the metal thread people weren't participating, but he only meant a *few* metal thread people instead of *no* metal thread people. I understood it to be *no* metal thread people, so when all these very non-mainstream, very purist *metal* albums/songs began showing up, something seemed fishy. Turns out I wasn't correct about the electorate's proclivities before the countdown(s) began.

It's all ok. Most people are fine with it, no-one is really objecting. It wont affect the top albums I don't think,maybe it will affect lower down places, but it seems no-one cares so it's fine. It's just something I didn't want to encourage. I'm sure johnny will listen to more metal this year for the 2011 poll if we have one!

If all the metal poll voters voted here we'd get some interesting results...

True, but they never do. And we do generally vote for a lot of non-metal in our ballots when we do. But I think if 80 metallers voted in this poll, there would be a shitload of complaints about the results. Metal is still generally looked down upon/frowned against on ILM unless its Wire or PFM approved.
Plus a guitar band has never won the ILM EOY poll.

Of course the funny thing is, is that some metal thread regulars wont vote as the results are "too arty or indie".

80 straight-line metal ballots would be odd, but presumably whatever reaches the top of the Metal poll should have a good shot at doing well here.

If you want metallers to vote then the poll organisers should advertise this poll over in the rolling metal thread and metal poll results thread and encourage them to vote. (i.e. they wont listen to me)

the general feeling is that the EOY polls are more pop orientated so there's no point in voting "niche" stuff, even though the goons manage to organise themselves which surely disproves that point. But if you advertise on the rolling niche threads and encourage them, then you should get a lot more ballots giving the poll a more well rounded balance?

One of the reasons the metal poll does a top 100 is so less well known stuff gets noticed and discovered and it's not just about the big releases. If the EOY poll expanded to 100, then a lot of voters would feel their vote counted and would be happy to see stuff get their 5 minutes of fame so to speak.
The 51-100 in the EOY always has lots of great stuff so it would in no way dilute the quality.

I don't actually, you know, ~care~ if the metal contingent forms a voting bloc (I mean, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be voting for nothing that gets in the metal 100), I just figure it'd be different. No biggie.

It may look messy when you enter it, but it comes out fine on our end. (And that's only for the albums spreadsheet...J0rdan did it the simple way on the tracks spreadsheet.)

But in those text versions, the albums list has a huge space between the artist name and the record title, whereas the tracks list doesn't. So should I keep the formatting of the album list when I copy and paste my ballot to the online voting form, or should I remove the spaces so both the album and track list look the same?

Nope, don't remove the spaces when pasting the albums in. It's because J0rdan and I designed our spreadsheets differently, but the syntax needs to be the same for all albums and the same for all tracks.

Like I said above, it may look funny when you paste it in, but it comes through on our end looking perfectly fine.

2008 albums poll had an absolute truckload of curveballs and bizarre choices in it, it doesn't always lean pop at all, it depends on the year to an extent.

i've heard plenty of new great stuff, but only two albums that would've rocketed into my top 25 had i heard them both in time (emeralds, max richter). otherwise i'm still pretty set on my favorites... no idea what i'd eliminate to make room for those two, btw.

The 2nd point I understand completely. The 3rd I just don't care about; I don't vote for an album strategically or because I'm hoping it will end up on the list. I make a list and want it to represent my preferences; wherever the albums end up should reflect the consensus of the community. i.e. whether or not it "wins" is unimportant to me.

While I understand your latter two points, your first doesn't really make sense to me. The list of albums contains hundreds and hundreds of albums, many of which (a majority?) will receive either one or zero votes. Allowing another (maybe) two-dozen albums to be voted on would suddenly make the process a "fiasco"? How?

I'm not a music journalist, so I'm curious to know: are other EOY lists made with an exclusive nomination period in the same fashion, or is this just an ILM thing?

I also want to be clear that I'm not trying to be an ass or a whiner. I'm cool with the process and am happy to be a part of it, but am more so curious to know for what reason things are done this way.

I find the nominations process best as a memory refresher tbh.

the nominations process is a bit arcane now with the volume of stuff that gets nominated, but it still ensures that everyone has the exact same name/spelling on everything so that the votes can be counted by a script instead of hand-counted

This might be a minor point, but the nomination process also stops people from voting on things that wouldn't qualify (like realeses from previous years, etc.).

After an awesome day at work going through my tracks shortlist, I have painfully whittled them down, ordered them, and my ballot should be sent. I copied and pasted from the TXT list into my text editor and then made cuts and ordered them before pasting the final list onto the ballot. If this has caused any problems please let me know by the morning or else I won't have time to resend my ballot before work. I want my vote to count, dammit.

We've got over 90 ballots now, btw. I dunno how big the EOY polls have been over the last few years, but that's the most votes any poll I've ever been involved with has gotten.

I think the aim should be to break 100. I think there are usually a lot of last-minute entries but then maybe that was just me.

I know the early ILM polls got a lot more than 100, but there were SO MANY people around back then. I just checked the 2007 poll for a more modern parallel, and there were 64 ballots cast.

Was pretty sad that there was no Endless Falls by Loscil in the albums noms, definitely a top ten for me.

ilx must have got bigger and bigger in recent years as the metal poll has went from 30 ballots in 1st year to 50 last year to 80 this year. And the big poll has got bigger each year too.

Wonder if that will mean more consensus for P&J type bands with niche artists squeezed out or the opposite? Hopefully the latter. With the metal poll it's pretty fair to say the more niche-y acts did better than in magazine polls.

I think the Rolling threads intimidate lurkers because they're full of critics and they move so fast--with discussion of new albums usually already dead by the time of the commercial release date.
