fabulous diamonds II imo, and before that, eat skull's WILD AND INSIDE. basically, ill jock for a lot more of the new siltbreeze releases than most people around here. im still super hyped for TNV and psychedelic horseshit, and although i like more stylistic breadth in my life than "shitgaze" allows, it is an important part of a balanced meal or something.

Thread subject makes record player ownership mandatory, I thought.

was thinking about this thread last night. occurs to me that most of what gets discussed on this thread (almost everything that comes out on labels like CDR, siltbreeze and in the red, for instance) is considered "indie" rather than punk by the punk purist staff and patrons of my local punk rock record shoppe. their punk, the "real punk", consists largely of retro-inflected hardcore bands, most owing something to discharge, but more to a billion japanese, english, finnish & american iterations since. these records have names and song titles that cannot be pronounced by yankee tongues, and they come with back patches and A4 newsprint posters with lyrics and war atrocity photos of barbecued infants. they're often pretty okay, sometimes great, from what i hear in passing, but i'd have no idea where to start.

tbh I listen to a lot of that kind of crusty hardcore stuff, but I mainly read this thread for the Siltbreeze/ITR/shitgaze/etc stuff cos I like a lot of it and it wouldn't normally get on my radar.

i started the original thread in 2007 and i basically just wanted a place to discuss bands that weren't really in the whole crappy handwringing over "OMG ARCADE FIRE SUX" or explicitly noise (which got discussed a lot more back then)

this is how i described it at the time:

i'm with you, UMS, and wasn't complaining (i often come off more condescending than i imagine i intend). just tripping on the irony of the "non-indie" header, given that this thread has always been 100% in line with my interests, and i'm indie from way back.

no i agree a lot of this stuff is "indie" to me, like i dunno thinking fellers is indie to me or something

it was more just cuz of what "indie" means on ILX which is generally like shitty bands or musical cooties to be used in discussions of pop music

and, i think these threads have always been great and super informative and really pretty much focused on exactly the kinda stuff that i felt didn't have a place on the board

I like these threads for the more rocking noise groups, or the noisier punk groups, or unclassifiable stuff that still rocks, stuff like mayyors or mutators or other fallen spazz soldiers

it's a place to talk about good stuff that's off the beaten path and prolly won't get press coverage or end up on any top ten lists

and yeah indie has become a label for the more lightweight end of things, I mean if somebody asked you about magik markers or child abuse and you wouldn't say "they're some indie band"

two punks to speak of, both by way of these pacific northouests. first is that i went to see tit pig tonight, hype-attracting local hardcore band, at the comet. was fun. basic old-school cali-style HC with ripping leads and super catchy mosh riffs, elevated to greatness by a charismatic lead vocalist. like to the point where retard enthusiasm for retarded retardedness infects the rest of the band and the crowd and the entire joint with beer-hurling, elbow damaging fun times vibes. which is weird, in a way, like it almost becomes too cute to bear (geddit), but is fundamentally so goddam awesome and violent and stupid that reservations evaporate. said to have a record forthcoming, and worth checking out in whatever capacity if you get the chance.

also, as mentioned in passing above, oly-based milk music have a new, self-released 12" produced by capt. trips (ballsington) available for any/all. in some ways reminiscent of gun outfit, similarly hazy & abstract, but heavier and fuzzier, recalling early dinosuar (jr) and hammerhead/vaz, which is to say dark, groovy and high on tone. i mean i guess it's "grunge" in some sense, but no cheap clone of the justly abandoned. driven, memorable rock music with an obvious debt to the classics, but an equally obvious personality of their own. like hearing treepeople or seaweed for the first time.

Crusty, metallic skate-core influences are just what In the Red type punk needs to keep sounding fresh. With some of the mookish posturing and mawkish politics removed (but not all!) My favorite punk/non-indie underground records of last year were Black Breath and Double Negative, and King of Jeans did a perfect job of fusing fast/slow/smart/dumb together. Been on a Poison Idea kick for a few months. They're the ideal for me right now. Most "crossover" garage punk last year left me underwelmed (Wavves, Male Bonding, Harlem).

xp re Double Negative - their one before that was called 'The Wonderful & Frightening World Of...' - they are the good kind of smartasses and probably one of the best hardcore bands of the last five years

Amusing things about Double Neg: they sound a lot like early C.O.C (Animosity) and they're the same age and from the same place as C.O.C, but they were in 90s bands that went down the Merge root of the 1990 punk/indie divide. I think that how they walk the line so well. Did a quick listen to OFF!, and my first thought was "this is good for old guys, but it's no Double Negative."

So does this thread encompass old guard punks like Killing Joke, Nick Cave, The Fall, TV Smith, etc who are still making (good) music? What about post-punk type bands who might get lumped in with indie but aren't (A Frames, Six Finger Satellite)?

I'm not interested in hardcore so much as the stuff that springs from a rock vibe but moves into unusual territory, I.e. Xpressway or Flying Nun, that sort of aesthetic.

imo the thread is for stuff that isn't going to get coverage elsewhere. who doesn't know the fall or nick cave have something new out? there are probably entire threads dedicated to them. there aren't any threads dedicated to no balls or double negative or homo police, and there doesn't really need to be.

as much as I love 6FS there are plenty of places on ILX to talk about them, tho I will say their last album was pretty damn good. recent live shows haven't had the muscle of old, but a good year for hardness was kinda overlooked.

in terms of this thread, i dunno. i feel like punk is so many sounds, especially right now. i'm putting out a record by a synthpunk type band (comes out in a month!) who have nothing to do with a lot of what 'punks' would call punk. but that's because in reality, most punks are closed-minded shitbag drunks, whereas most of my punk friends are open-minded drunks.

also, we just got a box of florida's dying stuff in here at the shop where i work and i'm giving the new dead ghosts LP a spin. liked their first 7" a ways back, and this one's quality as well. i mean, y'know, it's garage rock. it sounds like garage rock. but *good* plain jane garage is a fairly rare beast ime, so it's always kind of a nice surprise whenever you hear it done well.

So I discovered the band ICEAGE from Denmark about two hours ago and am already crushing on them - if you like the idea of a cross between Teenage Jesus-y no wave, very early US hardcore and no-budget jangly late 70s UK punk you might also

I've contacted Iceage's label (email i✧✧✧@es✧✧✧.n✧✧) about ordering the vinyl and it's 200DKK (~35usd) shipped to US. Expensive, but better than the ridiculous amounts you'll pay for anything released on Youth Attack on ebay. Will order today probably.

Copenhagen's been a really interesting scene lately. Sexdrome are killer, and that entire Gra Fraktion compilation put out by Posh Isolation had some really interesting stuff on it. Was really digging Marching Church; a weird mix of disaffected postpunk vocals with really stripped down black metal instrumentation.

According to their blog Sexdrome are doing a split w/ Sump who are from the north of England and are worth checking for anyone who digs Bone Awl

didn't think it would be a big deal. i didnt realize everyone was just talking about the vinyl being hard to find, and not the songs themselves. i thought it would be kosher, since someone posted that "sorry" album earlier on this thread (failing to realize that said album is really obscure or something). I didnt even think about the fact that the album is new and still in print. personally, i like to download albums because if i like the album , i actually go out and buy it. if i dont, its not something i should have spent money on in the first place. i wont post anymore links to pirate blogs or whatever in the future on here; it was a one time error in judgement.

yeah, i thought that too, when i found out, but i dont want to be that guy that calls a band sellouts for playing a large venue (not that you are either), considering theyre popular enough to necessitate a venue that can fit a lot of fans. plus i saw them play on a stage at fuck yeah fest, to a huge crowd, and it was actually cool bc, since there were so many fans and they had so much room, the pit was fucking insane. so much fun.

oh, it isn't about it being large or selling out, it's about acoustics -- the Rickshaw, from what i remember, is super super dead acoustically, and they have residential neighbors (prob. a reason for the acoustic deadness).

ah. ive never actually been to rikshaw so i know nothing about their acoustics. that is kinda lame. im just glad theyre playing in california again tho. it seems like they never play out here anymore.

the Beyond Living 12" by Milk Music made, like, 8 top ten lists in the new MRR, which was kind of shocking to me. as contenderizer said upthread, it has Dino Jr. feel, but also makes me really think of what it would sound like if early 'Mats records were sent through a fuzzbox. which means it fucking rules.

People should check out the NY Rules compilation cassette that just came out, some awesome scuzzed out punk on there. Pregnant, Dawn of Humans, and Hank Wood and the Hammerheads stand out in particular. The Men's cover of Gates of Steel is great too.

Raspberry Bulbs "Nature Tries Again" LP is fantastic, get a real Static Age vibe from the drum and guitar tone at times. The last track (with the clean vocals) is pretty awesome. I'd love to see this dude explore that sound some more.

Drummer Danny Mclain of Grand Ulena has passed away.

Don't know how well known they were outside of the midwest, were most known cuz Darin Gray from You Fantastic!, Dazzling Killmen and Skin Graft axis stuff was bass player in the band.

they were super loud awesome improv rock. a force of fucking nature live.

White Lung are great in a completely different way than Nu Sensae. i think the only thing that connects them is that they're all friends and the lyrics of both bands speak to a hopeless, doom-filled youth. or something. otherwise, totally different. (i do like Nu Sensae better, though)

Saw Ecoli, Culture Kids, and OFF! the other night. Culture Kids and Ecoli KILLED!!!! So much fun, and great energy. OFF! were fun, but Keith was really annoying. He got super self righteous about refusing to play Black Flag covers. Normally, it's cool for a new band to maintain it's own identity, but I don't think he should act so high and mighty about it considering, he named the new band after a bug spray (like Black Flag), has Raymond Pettibon album art (like Black Flag), calls his album "First Four EPs" (like Black Flag's "First Four Years"), and all 16 of their songs sound exactly like the first five songs on Nervous Breakdown. Also, he preached about how he's "been doing punk and hardcore for long enough now that i can sing about whatever i want." Wtf did he sing about before then?

Enough with the negativity. Culture Kids and Ecoli were amazing! I highly recommend the 7 inch by Culture Kids and all three 7 inches by Ecoli.

Culture Kids are probably the best hardcore band in the Bay Area, and that's saying a lot.

I don't know. I used to agree with you, but Ecoli gave em a run for their money that night. They almost got thrown out because their scrawny ass singer kept throwing the monitors at people and held his own against a kinda hostile crowd. At the end of their set, some people hoisted him up and as he was crowd surfing, he just started throwing his fist down, striking at anyone within reach as his shirt was torn to shreds.

i saw the White Lung/Nu Sensae show at Serra Bowl... it was fucking sick, can't say that i agree with whoever said WL were boring live. i was going nuts during "Shoot," they were fucking rad.

also, the new Nu Sensae 7" on Fast Weapons is destructively fucking awesome. more sophisticated than the LP, but still dark and furious. Andrea is like my new favorite person, also.

i was at that show, but i missed both of those sets because i was hanging at the bar watching elderly Filipino dudes kick ass at karaoke. The guy who did "Sweet Caroline" was a force to be reckoned with.

The No Babies 6/16 show is gonna rule. Not only are No Babies and Cacaw (possibly) playing, but so is Sister Fucker (who are better than ever, after their hiatus), Brute Heart, and Rind. I think calling it the social event of the season would be putting it lightly.

i don't know about that. the Nu Sensae Serra Bowl show was pretty much every person i've ever met in the Bay Area punk scene. i mean, shows at the Church are always rad (ie check out the insanity of the last StrpMllSzrs show below) for many many reasons (one of them being that the people who live at the Church are fucking rad friends), but i'm not totalllly sure that it'll be as blown out and big as yr saying, Izzy. also, wait, who are you?

Been to 2 nights of Fuck Download, which had GBH and the Varukers last night, and English Dogs and Discharge tonight (plus a bunch of support bands) and there was probably about 100 people at each. Talked to a bunch of aussies on the way home and they were like if those bands played in Oz they'd pull 1000 people easy. Pretty much every gig I've been to lately has been half empty. It's not just old fat guys playing the 30 year old hits either, Tyvek was half empty a couple of months ago.

i've been absent from this thread this year cuz i just don't have the money for punkrock 45s, my preferred punkrock vehicle, and no one's providing pointers on what i need to hear. my show attendance has dropped off shamefully (plan to rectify this summer), termbo has become so occasional as to be useless, mosurock no longer devotes much attention to the garage-type shit i love best, and what with this thread concentrating almost entirely on basement parties and nosier shit, i've kind of fallen out of the loop.

I love checking out these threads, but I back off from posting about the poppier/garagey end of this spectrum cause I don't want to derail the way it's going now

also, i dunno, the Kurt Vile/Fresh & Onlys/Ty Segall thing has been over for me for a while. but i think that's because the Bay Area quickly became overexposed to all of it, and i got heavy bored as a result. yes, some of the tunes are rad, but when shows are dominated by flannel dudes and arm-clinging girlfriends, i'm out of there.

Just kidding around! The record is great - and the RTX comparison is a bit lazy anyway - obviously it's right there, but there's more going on once you get used to them. and on-the-sleeve trux worship is cool by me anyway.

Sonny and the Sunsets' "Tomorrow is Alright" is really the stand-out to me of the Bay Area stuff I've heard, I can see how it might be too cutesy or something for some but I think he writes some really great catchy tunes.

Where's the best place to start with Ty? Read so much good stuff about, but have yet to hear a note. This thread reminds me that I still need to get this year's Fresh & Onlys EP.

Far from a Trux completist, but Sweet Sixteen did the trick for me, once I got past the cover art.

^ different people will tell you different things, but i love horn the unicorn, his first release. basically demos, first issued on cassette, later reissued on LP with a ton of additional tracks ― a couple of the stronger songs were rerecorded for his S/T album on castle face. big advantage is that the songs aren't as intentionally lo-fi as on the S/T, though they're by no means polished.

also melted and reverse shark attack, a collaborative album w mikel cronin. his $singles is amazing and would probably be the best entry point, but so far it's cassette-only and ridiculously limited.

For Ty, I only really know Melted and Lemons - both pretty solid - I want to hear Horn The Unicorn now, thanks!

bunch of great royal trux albums. my suggestions would be cats and dogs and accelerator (lol), so if you don't like those, i dunno what to tell you. of their major label albums, i prefer thank you to sweet sixteen, but they're both pretty good.

you might wanna try the singles, live, unreleased, as it presents a decent overview of everything they did prior to getting signed by virgin. often formless and noisy as hell, but the best tracks are great. you just have to do some digging...

Saw Nasa Space Universe the other night. They SLAYED, as per usual. Also, SSurgeons opened for them, which is basically the latest version of Le Face (for all the Iceage fans on here, interested in hardcore post-punk), and they ruled as well. I forgot how crazy shows can get in Socal.

both. el rio was a bit more 'mature,' which makes sense given it was a 21+ show, but it was still pretty raucous.

Haha. I saw some people bitching on facebook about the pit at the big gay warehouse show. Go fuckin' figure there would be a pit at a hardcore show. It really annoys me when there's gnarly, energetic, crazy bands, and then people just stand there and like bob their heads, yet when someone starts dancing in a way that reflects the energy of the music (moshing), then they get treated like assholes. I noticed that a lot of people in the bay area think people should be on their best behavior at punk shows.

Having said that, I equally hate it when people use moshing or hardcore as just an excuse to beat up on people. I guess there's a happy medium that should be established.

2011/10 punk lp's i have been listening to the most lately are

wiccans - skullduggery (katorga works)
wax museums - eye times (trouble in mind)
gg king - esoteric lore (rob's house)
omegas - blasts of lunacy (parts unknown)

iirc wiccans & wax museums have some common members & i'm not surprised they both put out good records. wiccans are hardcore punk with ridiculous, over the top vocals, sung by someone who sounds like he has eaten (but not yet swallowed) large mouthfuls of meat while singing. been working a lot of long shifts at a pretty miserable job & get anxious and tense about how much of my young life i see disappearing before my eyes and this album is a nice thing to listen to on my walk home from work. while the vocals are definitely the highlight some of the moments/riffs are really interesting and _huge_. wax museums is like, quirky, clever snotty punk. good songwriting good jokes & a good singer

gg king's drug zoo is one of my favourite punk songs & releases of the last few years & i had high hopes for the lp, which, after some initial deliberation, basiaclly lives up to it. a bit cleaner & less obnoxious, unfortunately, but there are some really great songs. "walls closing in" is my favourite and is as good as anything they or carbonas have done.

the omegas album is awesome, once again a hardcore punk album. i dont know anything about hardcore punk or how to talk about it. some of the searing guitar solos felt a bit out of step with the rest of it but now i'm totally into them. sometimes life is weird that way

yeah, i mailorder like every few weeks & buy stuff when i see it but it's hard to be anywhere near as complete as i'd like to be. most of this stuff turns up on mediafire w/in a couple weeks

I hate insulting a band by calling them "rockstars," but after the Iceage show at the echo the other night, these guys kinda have it coming. It was a great show, and tons of fun, but they acted like they didn't want to be there, and then at the end of their set, had one of their crew come out on stage and told us to ask for an encore, they came out and did one more song, and then had their guy come out AGAIN and told us to ask for ANOTHER encore, at which point they decided they werent getting enough applause, so they didnt play anymore. If they were gonna play more songs, they should have just played em, and not made us beg for it like dogs. They sold out the echo, everyone was moshing, cheering, and having a great time, so CLEARLY the crowd appreciated them and wanted to hear more, and i thought it was kind of insulting that they needed such an ego stroke. They're still a great band, I just think the massive hype is going to their heads.

On a more positive note, Hysterics played two AWESOME shows in socal this week. Badass female hardcore from Olympia. Their shirt designs are rad as well (the black flag logo made out of bloody tampons instead of black bars).

Just so everyone knows, there's a new socal band in the works that does covers of famous street punk songs in a reverb-heavy garage style. They're called Thee Oisees.

I guess this as good a thread as any to mention this, since I didn't want to post it on the London riots thread because it's a bit superficial to what is really going on there - the anarcho-punk band Conflict has just been forced to pull out of a gig next weekend because of the London riots, the police were coming down hard on the venue saying they would ask the council to cancel the gig if Conflict played. Kinda weird although I suppose vaguely understandable given the trouble that has occurred after Conflict gigs in the past, seems like it's the fairly distant past now though, and it's not as if there was much of an anarchist presence at the riots anyway.

Trying to resist posting some kind of "Governable Force" zing on the Conflict facebook page since they've pulled out but I do actually understand their reasons for not trying to go ahead with it.

Canceling Conflict is weird when clearly Teddy Boys were to blame.
