Hopefully by then, I'll be ready to answer this.

tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

tell ya I ain't gonna decide right away, but for me it's between "Yeah Yeah You Would" for that chorus and bridge, "Looking for Love" for its sterility, and that awesome coda where Usher lets loose, or "Ass on the Floor" for the synth washes, the melody, and the percussiveness.

can't decide yet.

those balls look like a butt (San Te), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

"Someone to Love Me" is just the dopest, but I'm a true school herb

endlamoosing (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 04:09 (fourteen years ago)

Too soon, but "Yesterday" clicked tonight.

Chris Brown and I are going to hell.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 04:10 (fourteen years ago)

too soon :(

strobe lights may not be the most fun to listen to but I admire its frigid 5 AM comedown

dayo, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 04:24 (fourteen years ago)

still don't know, but i'm rly happy to see all the love this is getting. my fav album of 2010.

stare into my soul (Tape Store), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 07:03 (fourteen years ago)

ok i've decided it's "ass on the floor"

i think every song (inc. "change") is amazing but sometimes that one rly hits me emotionally and the ending is next-level

stare into my soul (Tape Store), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 07:16 (fourteen years ago)

jesus, way way way too soon

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 08:42 (fourteen years ago)

right now i'd go with "yeah yeah you would" for the sweeping drama

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 08:42 (fourteen years ago)

i think the point of these threads, or at least how i've found them useful, is to catalyze discussion after the original album thread has died down. idk what the point iz of having two going on the same thing when the first is still going strong

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

lol is*, v early

pretty much

sisilafami, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 12:54 (fourteen years ago)

"Ass On the Floor" has been the best overall song for me. Kalenna has a great atonal, Grace Jones like lead that just personifies the whole pissed off mood of the song. I'm also shocked by Swizz Beatz's use of the clear percussive sound of the marching drum. I never recalled him using that sound before and I hope he doesn't use it again as it will strip away the uniqueness of the song.

Also for some odd reason, when Kalenna and Dawn sing in harmony on the refrain:

Baby I want you to need me
I need you to want me, I want you to love me forever

with the synths flowing is aural heaven in my earbuds/headphones.

And Diddy was decent only for the smoking weed listening to Sade part.

I love the "smoke weed, listen to sade" line cause it's totally on some ~~diddy teaches you how to live~~

tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

the synth swell as diddy's verse ends is some epic shit

dayo, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

i shoulda done a No Way Out poll first as a sorbet

those balls look like a butt (San Te), Thursday, 6 January 2011 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

That snare is from Pon De Floor by Major Lazer, and just made me want to listen to Pon De Floor frankly. The rest of the song just kind of sits damply on top of that snare, no song called Ass On The Floor should be this limp.

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 January 2011 09:33 (fourteen years ago)

matt, i got your text yesterday about this album sounding limp just as i was falling asleep, and frankly i thought i was imagining it. this album limp?!?!

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 09:40 (fourteen years ago)

I've posted in a bit more detail on the other thread. It is limp though.

Keeping it positive on this thread, it's either I Hate That You Love Me or Strobe Lights for me.

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 January 2011 09:56 (fourteen years ago)

"Pon de Floor" sucks and "Ass on the Floor" is great tho.

tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

Actually they're both great.

If you hate "Pon De Floor" your taste is music is so far removed from mine that if we were ever in the same room it would explode.

Indolence Mission (DJP), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

The beat is great but the synths really fucking annoy me.

tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

maybe you need to have gooned over toytown hardcore from the rave scene circa 93-95 before it clicks

Indolence Mission (DJP), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

if Swizz Beatz actually sampled a drum sound originated by Diplo (if that's possible!) then barf

Johnny Cheever (some dude), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

that can't be true

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno that it's an actual sample, but it definitely uses the same (distinctive) cadence.

tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

They might just use the same source sample, but in the UK Pon De Floor has impacted way, way wider than pretty much everything else Diplo has done. It may be Diplo but it's not just a hipster touchstone, and Diddy knows his club music and I'd be very surprised if he hadn't heard Pon De Floor.

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

poor Switch, it's like he doesn't even exist

Indolence Mission (DJP), Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

Switch is the more talented one!

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

major lazer = diplo and switch, right? switch's presence prob more key than diplo's to its quality

haha xps!!!

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but all of the talk about "Pon De Floor" has automatically reverted to talk about Diplo when both of them were involved in the Major Lazer stuff (altho if there's a breakdown somewhere about who specifically produced what and Diplo was the one responsible for "Pon De Floor", fair enough; I assumed Switch had a hand in it do to rhythmic pulse similarities to the bassline in "Bamboo Banger")

xp: lol it's that part of the thread where everyone posts the same idea at the same time

Indolence Mission (DJP), Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

it was THE anthem of the recent student protests in london, fwiw. teenagers dutty wining in parliament square to "pon de floor" and gyptian/nicki minaj = such a moment.

also dan you've heard the princess nyah remix of "pon de floor" right?

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

yeah Lex, I caught that on another thread

so so hot

Indolence Mission (DJP), Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

All the important bits of "Pon De Floor" are by Afrojack actually. Major Lazer just dressed it up a bit (e.g. adding Vybz).

Tim F, Thursday, 6 January 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

That's one reason why it feels like such an important record, it short-circuits mainstream clubbing and frankendance so efficiently.

Tim F, Thursday, 6 January 2011 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

it's just "last night pt 2" and "change" but they're both excellent songs (i know i'm in the minority on "change") and work really well with the flow of the album, the latter especially

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Sunday, 9 January 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

everytime I see "Last Night Part 2" i keep thinking Diddy made a sequel to the Az Yet song

there are 2 tracks added to the main sequence, plus 2 more bonus tracks ("First Place Loser" and "Love Come Down")

some dude, Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

btw what do you guys think the worst track is? for me it's either "Looking For Love" or "Strobe Lights"

some dude, Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

i've been trying to bait people into having this discussion for a min now actually

for me it's any of the 3 songs with wayne or drake, though "strobe lights" is redeemed by its final minute, which i love. "your love" does nothing for me, either

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

i always think i'm not into "Your Love" when it starts and by the end i'm like holy shit this is amazing

some dude, Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

imo "Loving You No More" is so good that not even Drake can ruin it

some dude, Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

"your love" improves as it goes on and is not awful strictly speaking but i really hate that beat, got to be the weakest on the album

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Sunday, 9 January 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

"your love" is really strong imo, i love the tension of the beat - reminds me of omarion's "i get it in" and the dirty money girls slay on it.

IMMA PUT IT IN YOUR FACE BOY AS SOON AS YOU WAKE UP
I KNOW YOU WANNA HIT IT, WANT ME TO BE YOUR LITTLE SLUT

worst track is "yesterday" fairly easily. i have the standard edition track listing and the bonus trax as free-floating mp3s and am happy with that, the album isn't actually out in the UK yet.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

it's missing about half the bass from "i get it in"

the opening & underlying plink-plunk percussion just puts me off, such a out-of-place played sound on an album like this

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Sunday, 9 January 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

reminds me of "turnin me on" more than anything and i never really liked that song all that much so

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Sunday, 9 January 2011 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

i love "turnin' me on"!!!!!!!

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

coming home reminds me of empire state of mind only worse. yea yesterday is also p bad

johnny crunch, Sunday, 9 January 2011 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

ha i know you do, and so does ship

"coming home" is kinda saccharine like that johnny, yeah, but diddy's rapps are ok, even dare i say touching, so it gets pass from me

don't get the hate for "yesterday" unless yall are just kneejerk breezy hating

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Sunday, 9 January 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

btw what do you guys think the worst track is? for me it's either "Looking For Love" or "Strobe Lights"

― some dude, Sunday, January 9, 2011 9:35 AM (3 hours ago) Bookmark

"strobe lights," yes -- i love lil the vocoder part at the end of "your love" -- kinda wishing they had integrated that more into the song

i'm not a huge fan of "love come down"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

well that's a bonus track on the deluxe version that's not even an option in this poll.

original "Angels" single version would easily be my least favorite song out of this project, but the synths on the remix redeem it somewhat.

some dude, Sunday, 9 January 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

i love "love come down" and am actually disappointed it's not on the main album - hate the recent trend for artists/labels to disown underperforming lead singles

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

^^^ Was just thinking that yesterday. It really encapsulates that air of lack of self-confidence about pop music these days, like, "oh we thought this was good but if the public doesn't take to it we're gonna assume the crappy track we'd red-marked "album at best, outtake possibly" is better".

Tim F, Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

"massive attack" vs. "your love" GRRRRRRRRRR

i mean ultimately it's also the fault of all the appalling people without taste who actually made "your love" a success instead

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

"Massive Attack" was the example I was thinking of actually, w/r/t a bounty post on Nicki (though not on "Massive Attack" itself). Especially given it was such a "statement" first single, and then it's not like they're entirely pretending that side of her doesn't exist.

Tim F, Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:43 (fourteen years ago)

i was wondering what you actually thought about nicki, don't think i've ever seen you post about her!

i voted for "massive attack" in my p&j which was a STATEMENT of sorts

given the amount of bonus trax you'd think they could've at least have dumped it on pink friday at the end

there was also ciara's "go girl" in the fantasy ride era, which underwhelmed me as a single but finally grew on me at around the time i learned it was being purged from history, stalin style

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

one of my favourites - actually disproves the line that diddy hands over vox to others so much because he's incapable of carrying the album, because he pretty much carries that song with some of the best (and oddest) lyrics on the album (apart from dawn's kinda amazing chorus - love how she deliberately mimics an old blues sample, feels incongruous but fits perfectly)

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 10 January 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

I said it on the original thread: it's my favorite Diddy rap in years. In a couple of spots he even apes Chuck D's post-1994 intonations (thinking specifically about "He Got Game").

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

90% for the "Woah!!!! What you gonna do when I'm perfect for you??" multitracked pinnacles. But I do love JT's sub-Drake verse too.

Shades is fun. JT's grocery bags are at least forgivable because they aren't done in earnest as a serious rap. whereas Drake/Weezy/kayne and company I can picture leaning back and going "whoAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" after every hashtag they toss out

the dirty money verses are my favourite things about "ass on the floor", i think - i love the tension, that slightly drunk "i'm about to do something really fucking stupid" feeling (which turns out to be giving her soul up in that super-pretty bridge)

also the slight shift from "now i'm drunker than a motherfucker, tryna find my way back to your heart you motherfucker" in the first verse to "got me madder than a motherfucker, tryna fight my way back to your heart you motherfucker" in the second is perfect

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 13 January 2011 10:52 (fourteen years ago)

are dead prez in the credits for "hate you now" or did diddy just thief the "hip hop" beat, incidentally? (think it works really well whichever way)

such great economical usage of vocoder across this album

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 07:28 (fourteen years ago)

^^ yeah, I highlighted that part awhile ago - I really love it because 1.) it kinda encapsulates the vibes of a nightclub so perfectly, as a place where people go and prevaricate and stop at nothing to get what they want - including treating heavy concepts like true love* with careless abandon 2.) the last two lines are a perfect summation of weezy's m.o. as a rapper

*of course, I don't actually think anybody is really hurt by this - I can't imagine whatever girl weezy is saying this too actually thinks weezy means what he says - it's all part of the game

dayo, Friday, 21 January 2011 07:30 (fourteen years ago)

I also love the stage metaphor because it highlights the performative aspect of being at a nightclub

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

tnx - to expand on the second point i like the faux-humble aspect of it. it's like weezy is taking the schoolyard argument of 'what's the big deal, they're just words' and applying it to himself - but of course he knows how powerful words are, he's hyperaware, but he's hiding in this defense of 'I just put words together'

dayo, Friday, 21 January 2011 07:48 (fourteen years ago)

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 07:56 (fourteen years ago)

the talkbox at the end of "your love" <3 <3 <3 didn't even notice it til this week - i love the climax, male/female/digitised voices all intertwining w/each other.

i caned this album this week cuz i had to do a review of it, and in most cases when that happens i feel a bit sick afterwards, like i've overdosed on the album and can't go back to it for a couple of weeks - not the case here, i was finding it completely fresh and exciting right up until i filed.

diddy's obsession with sade is amaaaaazing.

One of the moments I remember feeling happiest last year was lying on a banana lounge at some "beach bar" in Nice (and paying through the nose for the privilege, as you do), getting drunk on beer in the afternoon, Sade's Best Of playing on loop over the stereo. I like to think Diddy had a similar experience that inspired some of this.

i like sade too, so do lots of people, she had one of the best-selling albums of 2010 for fuck's sake! don't get why diddy's obsession is amazing? it just kinda puts him in the company of millions of sade fans. unless we're talking in comparison to other hip-hop artists in 2010-11, in which case he's clearly quite vocal about his love.

THAT'S LIGHTWEIGHT DICKERY (dayo), Saturday, 14 May 2011 05:32 (fourteen years ago)

the greatest compliment i can pay this album is that it manages to elevate a straight grocery bag verse from justin timberlake into something transcendent

that verse is so amazing. i mean a huge part of it is the humour though, timberlake sounds like he's taking the piss out of grocery bags because we all know grocery bags are terrible, right? and the song's entire persona is this superstar who's kind of awkward on a human level

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 07:57 (fourteen years ago)

i mean every JT grocery bag just makes me burst out laughing

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 07:58 (fourteen years ago)

Tim F, Saturday, 14 May 2011 07:59 (fourteen years ago)

i think he's being intentionally ridiculous

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:04 (fourteen years ago)

like i don't think even JT thinks "we can press rewind, press rewind...VHS" is a properly great line (but it's still amazing)

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:04 (fourteen years ago)

Well I don't think he thinks it's artistry, but I think he's taking the piss out of grocery bagging either.

Somewhere in between: I think he recognises that grocery bagging is just ridiculous enough that he too can play that game.

Tim F, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:08 (fourteen years ago)

don't think he's taking... I mean.

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:10 (fourteen years ago)

I do agree (or at least I think this is what you're getting at) that there's a difference there which means that you don't feel like he's trying to pass off grocery bagging as great rapping, which then makes it easier to love for its ridiculousness.

drake aside i think "loving you no more" is really dope, was my fav hit off the album until "your love"

"loving you no more" completely rescued by SO MANY TEARS I CRIED

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 June 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

meanwhile i could really do without "change" but its context in the deluxe edition ("i know"/"loving you no more" / "coming home") totally elevates it. it is sort of the bottom of the record, the whisper of a completely gone thing.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 June 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

"Someone To Love Me" is so killer, that beat is the heart of this album

Euler, Tuesday, 12 July 2011 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

when he says "I need you, God help me, please love me, c'mon", it's a hair-raising moment, a naked & raw moment

dayo, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

still love "Someone To Love Me" so much, if I were gonna rate these I'd put it just after "Ass On The Floor".

I'd also rate "Shades" & "Coming Home" super high, never got overexposed to the latter on radio & I traveled a lot to this album last year (to Paris no less) so coming home was on my mind a bunch.

Euler, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

it is also true that "Coming Home" has a completely different impact when heard at the end of this album instead of 8 million times in a row on the radio

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:10 (thirteen years ago)

don't know how you can say preferring "shades" is doing ddm wrong because each track is like a totally different exploration of mood. liking a ddm song is doing ddm right

dudes, come on, "i know" is really beautiful

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

i'm gonna call bullshit on my own argument just on principle - i remember a couple years ago sarge said the same thing to me when i said the "love vs money"s were my least favorite songs on that dream album - but to me the DDM album is just a joyride of bright, energetic, percussive bangers and i always resent how "shades" fucks up the flow for me

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

i haven't seen anyone, anywhere rave about how amazing "yesterday" is, because it's not

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

i like "yesterday" just wish anyone else were singing it

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

"shades" is far from the only slow, woozy, depressive moment on LTTP - "angels", "strobe lights", "loving you no more"...and they're as integral to it as the bangers

i mean even "hate you now" and "looking for love" are basically massively dark and paranoid

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

like i really enjoy "yesterday"'s structure, how this simple melody just collects intensity. the ending of the song is really cool too but i guess that holds for every song on this awesome record

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

I like DDM as much for the lush, sumptuous stuff as much as the bangers and "Shades" is maybe the apotheosis of that.

And Brad otm about "Yesterday"

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:06 (thirteen years ago)

tbf k3v is the only one crazy enough to dislike 'shades'

#YOLO #NAMASTE (D-40), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

I really like "Yesterday" though it's not in the top tier of songs on the album - the only problem with it is knowing it's Chris Brown.

I want to hate on CB as much as the next person and heaps of his stuff in the past two years has been awful but I remain impressed at whatever internal molecular adjustment so many of you have accomplished whereby you now appear to have a physical reaction to his mere presence on a song.

I mean, if "Yesterday" was my favourite song I'd feel a bit weird promoting it for the same reason, but nor do I automatically vomit in my mouth every time I hear the same vocalist who I loved on "Forever" and "With You" and "Superhuman" and "Run It" and "Yo" and...

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:12 (thirteen years ago)

Also "Shades" is awesome, probably my second favourite song on the actual album, though it was a bittersweet moment when I realised it's the DDM track most successful at converting the "watching a party through smoke" crowd.

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:12 (thirteen years ago)

i don't even dislike 'shades' i just feel like ppl are overenthusiastic about it, like half the song is timberlake's dumb grocerybagging which you all like ironically

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:18 (thirteen years ago)

there's something smarmy about CB's vocal tone that was ignorable before, maybe even suited the songs, but which is just insufferable now. i don't thin he was ever what i loved most about his big hits.

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:18 (thirteen years ago)

i genuinely enjoy timberlake's grocery bagging

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

"yesterday" is probably my third- or fourth favorite song, i actually think CB's voice suits it very well

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

this isn't true at all... sonically it fits w/ a lot of stuff on the album, layers of synths and vocals, you're being crazy

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

i think chris brown is great on this album... i mean there are places where his wounded, fragile singing voice really does not work, and there are places where it's totally perfect, and i think on this album it's pretty close to the latter

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

if there's anything that breaks up the flow of the album it's "angels", which i love, but "hate you now", "shades" and "your love" all use similar tricks and then in the middle is this hollowed out track w/ a biggie verse

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

one of the great strengths of this album that i picked up on more w/ some distance is how seamlessly so many major stars are folded into the album... it's not so much that they disappear but it's almost at times if like the entire black pop music community has come together to express its heartache at once

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

^^^ said that in my review. The thing is like an updated Motown revue.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

Also, Timberlake is the last thing I remember about "Shades." What lingers is the insinuating, slinky groove and mood.

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:49 (thirteen years ago)

^^^ that's the best part of "Shades", & the way it transitions into the Timberlake part

Euler, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:50 (thirteen years ago)

to me its the vocals on the chorus... or whichever part it is where they sing "whatchu gonna do when i'm perfect for you?"... the vocals on that are great, the way they're layered so thick, it plays perfectly with the "hate you now" and "your love"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

Last slew of posts have all been very much OTM.

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

I'll spend the rest of my life defending this album to skeptics.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

i might be totally wrong about this, but it sounds to me like the harmonies on the chorus are layered in a way that is slightly out of sync, which has this great, disorienting effect.

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

i assume it's bilal & fauntelroy doing those parts?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, if "Yesterday" was my favourite song I'd feel a bit weird promoting it for the same reason, but nor do I automatically vomit in my mouth every time I hear the same vocalist who I loved on "Forever" and "With You" and "Superhuman" and "Run It" and "Yo" and...

It certainly helps that I mostly hated Chris Brown before he beat up Rihanna; "Run It" and "No Air" was the only songs of his I actually liked before he plopped himself on my personal boycott list.

man i was listening to this album (or more specifically my LTTP/LOVElove vs. HATElove/A Telltale Heart mega playlist) all day today and marveling at these songs all over again, fun to come home and see you guys were all talking about it at the same time.

fwiw k3v the wayne & justin parts of "shades" (especially wayne) are probably my least favorite parts of the entire album and the rest of the song is probably my favorite, and i've made my peace w/ that and consider the song great in spite of its faults

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:38 (thirteen years ago)

lex has pointed this out but despite the fact that I've probably racked up a cumulatie of 30-50+ plays on each track, each song just still sounds so fresh and nice and unique

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:45 (thirteen years ago)

I think what I really want to know is when Diddy actually learned how to rap

I mean, it's been building for a good long while now but I think he is legit good album this album, not just "good for Diddy"

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:17 (thirteen years ago)

He doesn't rise above "okay" imo, even on "Looking For Love," but that's a personal best.

He sinks again on the new Ross mixtape, alas.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:19 (thirteen years ago)

well let's be clear, "good" and "amazing" are two different levels

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

I like to think on LTTP that the company inspired him.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:22 (thirteen years ago)

even tho the whole thing was ghostwritten my favorite moment of his is still "Testimonial" from Press Play

frogbs, stills, and nash (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:22 (thirteen years ago)

eh i always thought his rapping was a pretty secondary concern on this album -- a lot of songs he only sings, or shows up w/ one verse a full two and a half minutes in. obviously there are some strong moments within those verses (it just hit me today how good he is on "someone to love me") but i mean he's still using ghostwriters and considering how often on this album it's rick ross it's kind of lol for you to say that.

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:23 (thirteen years ago)

whoops - I meant "Someone to Love Me" in my example.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:24 (thirteen years ago)

Diddy's always been enjoyable as a rapper if he has someone good writing for him.

Re: "Angels" sticking out, I kind of get the impression he put it out there before he'd really figured out the direction of the rest of the album and it ended up coming along for the ride. Note that the version on the album is reworked slightly from the single to fit in a bit better: those trancy synths at the beginning, no violin solo.

i've been listening to a misordered tracklist of this the entire time

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:26 (thirteen years ago)

i swear the version i actually bought is not the tracklist thats on wikioedia and amazon

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:28 (thirteen years ago)

do you have the itunes deluxe version w/ 'first place loser' on it? it's in a different order than most version of the album, but that's the one i listen to and prefer.

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:30 (thirteen years ago)

nah, i bought the actual CD

yeah, i'm not at home right now tho

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:34 (thirteen years ago)

oh ok -- fwiw the album wiki USED to show how the itunes running order differed from the CD but doesn't anymore, iirc the most prominent sequencing difference is one has "ass" then "yeah yeah" and the other has "yeah yeah" then "ass"

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:36 (thirteen years ago)

http://www.coverdude.com/covers/diddy-dirty-money-last-train-to-paris-back-cover-64793.jpg

this is the tracklist i have... the one on wikipedia and amazon is totally off tho -- "looking for love" is thrown to the back half, "your love" is before "shades", "yesterday" is the third to last song

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:39 (thirteen years ago)

woah and "loving you no more" isn't on it at all?

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:50 (thirteen years ago)

i have it as a bonus track

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:52 (thirteen years ago)

gonna make a playlist and listen to it based on the other tracklist tho

ok whoa this is blowing my mind

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:58 (thirteen years ago)

my tracklist is what jordan posted except with "last night pt 2" and "change" inserted

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:58 (thirteen years ago)

i cannot imagine it any other way

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:58 (thirteen years ago)

i initially downloaded the leak which follows jordan's tracklist, but then i purchased the record from itunes which had 1. intro 2. ass on the floor 3. yeah yeah you would... it's really strange and not nearly as natural of a track progression as jordan's/k3vin's version. no idea why it changed.

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:08 (thirteen years ago)

putting the single upfront i presume

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:09 (thirteen years ago)

Besides that reversal, though, I prefer the deluxe tracklist - I Know --> Loving You No More --> Last Night Part 2 --> Yesterday is a really smooth run, and 'Change' belongs right before 'Coming Home' if anywhere.

there are surprisingly few standouts to choose from!

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Monday, 23 April 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that was why i thought it'd be interesting

Poor Turrican (some dude), Monday, 23 April 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

lord, it'd actually be timberlake or grey for me (tip in third place)

everyone else is either barely noticeable (grace jones, bilal/fauntleroy backing vox) or crucial-but-not-notable (swizz beatz) or the worst thing about the song (drake, breezy, rawse) or dead (biggie)

usher and wayne acquit themselves well but i don't feel they bring the EXACT singular vibe that's perfect for both the song and the context within the album that timberlake and grey too.

if there was somehow a version of "hello good morning" with both tip and nicki minaj on it, and it was on the album, nicki would walk it. YOUNG MONEY I DO IT FOR THE YOUT DEM

yeah no i do think we're p much on the same page here generally but just for me weezy's presence on the album was vital in kinda idk, emulsifying the cocky/dreamy "hate you but i love you but i hate you" motherfuckers that's stoned patient aspect that i think would otherwise have got a little lost just with diddy carrying it. obviously subsequent releases in the ddm canon have further gone some ways towards internalizing the whole aesthetic so that perhaps now weezy doesnt quite seem as necessary, but at the time (and still in terms of lltp as a standalone piece) he was pertinent

also i say weezy's 'presence' rather than contribution specifically - i would suggest it's important to note all guests on the album have their characters sublimated into the lttp vibe, almost like they're mutliplicites of a single conflicted self rather than discrete entities cosigning the main body. like i might have first said ross was eminently the least essential person on this but even he works as a sort of texture of in-the-here-and-now brash celebrity unaware of the diddy/biggie melancholies to come

r|t|c, Monday, 23 April 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

r|t|c, Monday, 23 April 2012 21:56 (thirteen years ago)

i would suggest it's important to note all guests on the album have their characters sublimated into the lttp vibe, almost like they're mutliplicites of a single conflicted self rather than discrete entities cosigning the main body

this is so crucial yeah! but the best ones are also entirely recognisable as themselves, or at least they're basically still doing what they normally do, so it's not just straightforward self-anonymising in service of diddy, it's kind of...almost like the other way round, an extension of the sade love (and how diddy quotes those songs diddy on "coming home"). it's him identifying with what wayne, justin etc do and using them as mouthpieces.

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Monday, 23 April 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

Yesterday is probably the one track I'd consider leaving off

i'd forgotten about "ass on the floor" and then it popped up on an old mix and dear lord. back in my jkbx review i said "I feel like I’m going to love this song five years from now, and that’s a sensation I haven’t felt in a while" and as it turns out i like it fifty times more now?? if you forced me to make a Best Songs of the Decade list it would probably end up at 1. just so good.

When I am afraid, I put my toast in you (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 September 2019 17:04 (five years ago)

been away from this album probably 8-9 years, but I still like it just as much today

When I am afraid, I put my toast in you (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 September 2019 17:04 (five years ago)

i don't get why they reversed the track order on the deluxe, "Yeah Yeah You Would" makes much more sense as the opener, so I reset it that way on my player. "Ass on the Floor" is perfectly placed as the third.

When I am afraid, I put my toast in you (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 September 2019 17:07 (five years ago)

still in my top 5 of the decade, for me rn the easy pick for #1 is “hate that you love me” crazy it placed so low

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 December 2020 15:00 (four years ago)

this could have been the sound of the 10s instead we got “hyperpop”

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Monday, 14 December 2020 21:09 (four years ago)

Imagine if this would have been the launchpad for most of pop in the last decade.... sigh.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 December 2020 21:13 (four years ago)

I owe ILM big time for pushing me toward this album.

Why did it break his heart?

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 December 2020 21:14 (four years ago)

I was wondering the same thing, actually. My assumption was that it was because Dirty Money split up before they got to do more?

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 December 2020 21:17 (four years ago)

Because he spent three years on it and it's his lowest-selling album (~300,000 copies)?

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 14 December 2020 21:19 (four years ago)

You will notice a small sink where your sofa once was. (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 15 December 2020 03:53 (four years ago)

the one before it suggests its heading in this direction tbh. i actually expected at the time "press play" to sound more like what ended up being "LTTP" just because he was already listening to all the music that influenced LTTP but he hadn't quite adapted it to his A&R skillset yet i guess ... still "Press Play" has some crazy shit on it. The Keyshia Cole song in particular

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 15 December 2020 03:59 (four years ago)

"Press Play" also has Mario Winans-guested "Through the Pain" which kinda felt like it coulda fit on LTTP.

love that jam.
