Bands that enrage you

inspired mostly by the neverending Pomplamoose discussion on the Hyundai thread and the offhanded mention of The Dresden Dolls, a band that does a bazillion different things that, on paper, should be total catnip to me, but manage to do every single one in a manner that seems almost tailor-made to make me wish instead that I could shoot hammers out of the palms of my hands that would bludgeon them until they stopped.

Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not necessarily talking about acts like Burzum who are repellent/repugnant on a basic social level; this is more about those bands who musically hit your aversion circuits through no particular fault of their own.

Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

not a band but Joanna Newsom is this person for me, particularly re: should be total catnip but instead hammer-shooting-hands thing.

Mordy, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

Three Doors Down. Not just because they're horribly generic and had a career that was undeserved, but for their idiotic Citizen Soldier song/video

those balls look like a butt (San Te), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

every band Apple has used in their ads.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

I should narrow that down: Every band who has done a song which Apple has used in their ads for iPhone, iPod, and iPad.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

DJP: cosign on Dresden Dolls. Bands that get Brecht-rock right: Antifamily, Agent Ribbons.

LCD Soundsystem obv

if anyone is lost to the tragic carnage of ILX, let it be (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

Stuck Mojo because not only dp they sledgehammer you with "get off my lawn" paranoid neo-conservative politics in the liner notes and lyrics, all you get in return is a collection of half-assed songs and an occasionally cool riff.

Also band name is stupid

those balls look like a butt (San Te), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

the two that come to mind for me are Moldy Peaches and Rabbit Rabbit, but I always worry about bringing that up because somebody got all aggro at me in my early ilx days for one of them in a way that made me kinda think they might have been in the band or knew them or something so

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

like that time i said i hated the Gay Dad album and DJP didnt talk to me for a month

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

Oasis, just thinking of them makes me actually mad.

EDB, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

although I guess they are repellent/repugnant on a social level.

EDB, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm the same with Oasis.

Fogging Molly, my complete history with them is having to sit through a live DVD in a restaurant, but that was enough for total and utter - probably lifelong in fact - hatred. And the main dude used to be in Fastway so they're only one step away from both Motorhead and UFO, which enrages me even more.

It is actually worse than the Dresden Dolls stuff because at least there is a nugget of something I could conceivably enjoy and respect underneath the neverending layers of DD douchebaggery; EE is basically someone masturbating into a microphone and telling you it's the best symphony ever recorded.

I'm not as rage-filled as I used to be since, thank goodness, "post-rock"'s popularity has died down some, but I used to harbor a lot of it for Mogwai and Slint and the hundreds of others that people would praise to the heavens for doing the most rudimentary, boring bullshit rock I'd ever heard.

"I remember one time - it might have been a couple times - at the Fillmore East in 1970, I was opening for this sorry-ass cat named Steve Miller. Steve Miller didn't have shit going for him, so I'm pissed because I got to open for this non-playing motherfucker just because he had one or two sorry-ass records out. So I would come late and he would have to go on first and then we got there we smoked the motherfucking place, everybody dug it." -- Miles Davis

And now they have the WWE Raw theme song RRAAAGH.

Black Eyed Peas - same reason. Happily ignored them for the longest time (actually didn't mind them 15 years ago) but now people are being all "Oh Fergie has a great singing voice she's really underrrated" HOW CAN SHE BE UNDERRATED WHEN SHE SINGS AT THE OPENING OF EVERY DAMN ENVELOPE ON THE PLANET. She sucks, they suck I hate them and I wish ill on them.

but it's weird, the only music that's really driven me (near) to fits of rage recently was a bjork CD someone was playing in a record store. no idea which bjork CD, but a recent one, and i neither hate nor love bjork, really, i mean, i'm not by any means a fan, but i don't bear her ill will. anyway, holy cats this album was bugging me so very very much. horrible, endless planes of shrill, disjointed voice swooping, angled cruelly so as to pierce the outer membrane and wedge their barbs deep within the tender ear-flesh beneath. i was reduced to muttering foul black nothings to myself as i pawed the racks, suddenly painfully aware of the presence within myself of the crackbrained old rooneyman i hope to live someday to become.

311 - hated them bc of 'Down' and that monotonous, endless, toneless nasal singing voice that dude has..then I forgot about them. Then they did that Cure cover that shitty FM radio loves so much and ON LIKE DONKEY KONG

Bright Eyes. Conor Oberst more tolerable if he's singing with Monsters of Folk but his weak warbliness just make me furious.

Sarah McLaughlin. Breathy teary awfulness and her fakeass humility and ugh I sat through her set at Bridge School bc I didn't want to walk all the way out to the beer line and goddammit it was the worse laziness-based decision I've ever made

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

I have to say I loathe when they play post-grunge bands on classic rock radio. I can't even distinguish one band from another. Classic rock is supposed to have soul and blues or at least country & western roots ; nineties / 2000s rock has none of that. I am sick of trying to like it so I don't feel like a terrible snob. It's like they don't bother to learn or respect American roots music.

Cubby Wubby Nubby Hubby Dubby (u s steel), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

Ooh, this one is kinda redudant bc who cares but VELVET fucking REVOLVER.

I saw them for free in order to see Alice In Chains with their new lead singer lol...and t just infuriated me that these superstar hasbeen assholes were wasting my time with such bullshit music and getting PAID for it.
Scott Weiland looking like a cadaver and singing through a megaphone bc he's coked out his vocal chords
Slash being Slash reminding me of that blip in 1989-1992 when I thought he was actually cool which just bums me out worse
Duff like I can't even
Matt Sorum with his saran-wrap face and aggh

I had friends who actually saw them MULTIPLE times, said Weiland was HOT. How do you...it just doesn't...WHY LORD WHY

"hotel cafe/genghis cohen" folk scene is something i can't stand. same goes for crappy sunset strip party music like mickey avalon. and there's a band that a bunch of dudes i sort of know are in that plays all over l.a., getting opening gigs because one of them knows the right people, and they're spectacularly obnoxious. they're only a cover band, though.

Definitely the Dresden Dolls.

The Hold Steady seconded. Shitty sub-Springsteen rock with tedious lyrics and a singing nose.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Just that one song is enough to let me know they're trying to bring back the "classy alternative" of the pre-Nirvana era and I want no part of it.

Robertson described himself and the rest of the Band in their Ronnie Hawkins days as "street punks." And while there's no doubt some typical Robertson self-mythologization in that, I doubt that anyone playing with Hawkins in those days would later find many/any aspects of hippiedom particularly attractive.

I can't really think of any band that enrages me in a recorded context, because it's pretty easy to avoid those situations - just skip to the next song. But I have gotten pretty pissed off at bands in live situations. Was seriously bummed out by Crystal Stilts, a band whose album I kind of liked, in concert because they had a really boring take on the "don't give a shit" attitude and their singer's face pissed me off. Beyond that, mainly just 100 terrible local bands who were playing bills with my terrible local band when it existed.

For me it's anything to do with Nick Cave. On paper it should work - I should be his biggest fan, but all I hear is posturing and an overwhelming insincerity.

Also The Band really do suck, y'all have just been sold a bill of goods.

Love Lifter Puller and I have about ten songs from Almost Killed Me and Separation Sunday that I like, but I'm still going to go with the Hold Steady. Dudes have a lot going for them but when the band's pomp (esp in the Franz Nicolay) and Finn's lyrical/vocal monomania/monotony merge the product becomes exceedingly frustrating/insufferable

da croupier, Friday, 7 January 2011 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

I meant in the Franz Nicolay era, but most of that pomp was in the Franz Nicolay too

da croupier, Friday, 7 January 2011 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah - FUK TENNIS. They're a Denver band I was hearing a lot of good things about, hyped up in p4k and given sound reviews in the AV Club. I browsed thru their myspace and thought the whole "we lived on a sailboat and we write songs about living on that sailboat. oh yeah we lived on a sailboat" was a little odd, but i sorta liked they're jingly-jangly homagey roots. Come the concert, I couldn't stuff enough horse piss down my throat to even remotely enjoy these guys. Worst concert of 2010.

The sailboat thing got VERY FUCKING OLD after they mentioned it for the 45th time. Additionally weather that day consisted of freezing winds - but to imply, no to insist, that they lived a life aboard a sailboat they came dressed in shorts, white khakis, and sperry topsiders w/out socks. I was just like "give me a fucking break here". They concluded the concert talking about how they wanted to return to their sailboat and was so sloshed that I yelled "We fucking get it!" to the chuckles of some and the glares of most others.

Just google the band. Pitchfork just published an interview in which they talk about their sailboat, and how friends used to react to their living on a sailboat and how different they were from everybody else. Drown. /rage

Yeah in retrospect I wish I hadn't written that in such idiotic furor, but it grew really tired and at one point I just calmed down and found it utterly bizarre that they were taking a break between songs to actually talk about sailboating again.

heh (kelpolaris), Friday, 7 January 2011 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

I started seriously saving for a sailboat about four years ago. That’s when I decided that I can’t go to concerts anymore because when I go to a concert, I want a beer. All of a sudden a $10 cover turns into $25 if I want a record or something. These last three years have really been about shaping our desires through a life of saving rather than destroying all our desires by wanting to go out and buy stuff. We didn’t really go to concerts for the last three years at all. We were on this hardcore saving plan, where every ounce of money was going into the bank or going into a mutual fund, just trying to get as much money as possible. Then we did it, and everyone was like, “Well, that was weird. How did you do that?” It’s not that hard if you just realize it. If you want to go backpacking in Patagonia for a year, if you want to live in Europe for a year, make a plan. It’s totally possible today.

Nickelback doesn't infuriate me as much as it's fashionable it's led to believe most people are by it.
