Did you just get Cok Bok’ed? Is your Ramadanman in a jam? Can you tell your Roska from your Mosca? Is Hugh Jackman really playing Hackman in the up and coming post-dubstep film? Will your future garage be built by Will Bevan? It’s the dance partisan thread! Yay!

Few good mixes that set the tone nicely for the beginning of the year…

Oneman: http://www.xlr8r.com/podcast/2010/12/oneman

that t.williams one is v.great
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)
anyway, because it came out too late in the year to grab many people's attention, the completely banging "taking it down" by brenmar (the entire at it again ep is well worth checking btw)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD70jxSwCZ4
and i love julio bashmore's forthcoming ep too

I don't think I've heard Bashmore go for such an anthemic sound I kind of dig it. His Soul Motive 12" is still my fave of his. The Night Slugs 12" with Hyetal didn't do it for me dispite really digging them both. I though Hyetal's colabs with Peverelist and Shortstuff last year where miles ahead of that one. There is potential still mind.
― jimitheexploder, Friday, 7 January 2011 01:01 (fourteen years ago)
New Bashmore EP is great, I liked the Velour 12" a whole lot too. Have had a lot of trouble getting into Brenmar's non-remix stuff, feels really c'n'p to me.
― The Dutch of Dukes, Friday, 7 January 2011 04:12 (fourteen years ago)
the velour ep was the first bashmore thing i really loved (and my introduction to hyetal)
oh apart from has remix of claude vonstroke & j phlip's "california", that was excellent
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 08:54 (fourteen years ago)
Anyone else here hear the Kode9/Spaceape LP already? Not really digging it on my end but wondering if there's something I'm missing.

That Pearson Sound track is really nice yeah, he's got a knack for the 170 stuff I'd like to hear more of it.
Untold and Rockwell have done a collab thats sounding pretty sweet too: http://soundcloud.com/critical-music/rockwell-v-untold-rekohu-sunrise
― jimitheexploder, Saturday, 8 January 2011 12:46 (fourteen years ago)
This got mentioned on the Actress thread, but Downliners Sekt = interesting.
― sistern, Saturday, 8 January 2011 18:31 (fourteen years ago)
Damn that Pearson Sound cut is lovely, way less aggy than what Kennedy was doing throughout 2010
― The Dutch of Dukes, Sunday, 9 January 2011 01:26 (fourteen years ago)
I kid of dig Downliners Sekt we chatted to them a few months ago: http://www.sonicrouter.com/2010/11/interview-downliners-sekt.html They have a nice glitchy thing going on. You can even dl their EP off their site for free. The Electronic Explorations mix is cool too.
There are a few bits on the Ramadanman EP and latest Pearson Sound 12" on Hessle that have that rolling melodic, jungle sound going on just at a way slow pace. I wouldn't call any of his stuff aggy mind. Depends what you're playing it off I guess, I mean its pretty aggy compared to Caribou for example haha
― jimitheexploder, Sunday, 9 January 2011 01:37 (fourteen years ago)
Note me down as one of the few who just don't get Mount Kimbie and James Blake.
Sounds to me like an indie oriented/Prefuse 73 kind of take on the music and its not to my taste.
And I was deeply disappointed at the turn Darkstar have taken, so its nice to find some kind of combination of traditional musicality with bass music that doesn't sacrifice the strengths of either approach. I feel like I'm watching both Hotflush and Hyperdub go the route of Warp: increasingly interested in crossover into indie. Could just be my take on it, Hyperdub is still releasing some great Funky.
― sistern, Sunday, 9 January 2011 06:12 (fourteen years ago)
Hyperdub (is) increasingly interested in crossover into indie.
nah, not aside from the darkstar album. some of the label's newer stuff is grime-y, but not indie.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 9 January 2011 06:22 (fourteen years ago)
Well, Burial has pretty much funded the label's growth up until this point.
It definitely wouldn't hurt their chances to have another hit like that, but yeah they're still supporting Terror Danjah.
What I've heard of the King Midas Sound material is very song oriented, although its more of lover's rock feeling than an indie one.
I think I'm alone in preferring that they stuck with singles, the only album I really go back to on the label is Untrue.
― sistern, Sunday, 9 January 2011 06:31 (fourteen years ago)
aside from untrue, i kind of agree with you.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 9 January 2011 06:32 (fourteen years ago)
I dunno, other than the Morgan Zarate single (which I'm surprised more people aren't talking about in general) , Hyperdub seems to have been playing it safe for a while now (see: the recent run of Terror Danjah singles). The King Midas Sound material does slay, though-- just, nothing unexpected, you know?
― The Dutch of Dukes, Sunday, 9 January 2011 08:11 (fourteen years ago)
xxxxxost yeah, I guess I found the s/t EP pretty harsh-sounding (kind of austerely queasy, no?), would love to hear him going more in the "Don't Change For Me" direction but the Pearson Sound singles (esp. the "It Takes a Muscle" rework) show an extension of sound for sure
― The Dutch of Dukes, Sunday, 9 January 2011 09:16 (fourteen years ago)
the pearson sound single is pretty enough but i stuff that sparse and slow tends to drag a bit for me (unless it's mad percussive) without the propulsion or focus of eg his spark remix or "your words matter"...
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 09:29 (fourteen years ago)

― bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Thursday, 13 January 2011 19:34 (fourteen years ago)
Pitter is such a big track, love the Bok Bok track on the same 12" as well. Prob my fave from him so far. Hopefuly Ramadanman has mroe of those twisted synth weapons in his bag, its pretty diffrent to the rest of his stuff so hopefuly he's been exploring it more.

I sware this will get less like a spam-a-thon from me in good time when others pick things up a bit, but for now I may as well keep it rolling and show you some bits...
I'm pretty excited for these ravey fuckers: Mista Men, CRST, Randomer... Interviews and mixes bellow. They all take it a bit raw and a bit hype in their own little way. Mista Men have a heavy northen funky flex, CRST love their garage and Randomer is just twisted. They all have a load of energy, I can see some big tunes coming from this lot.

i'm feeling these new morgan zarate tracks. especially this one (it's fast too, like 147).
maybe it's just me, but this sounds more "american" to me that a lot recent hyperdub stuff? i was surprised to find out he's a uk dude.
― bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)
He's really good, I think there is an album on the way as well. Its Morgan Spacek.
Its got that Brainfeeder kind of sound I guess, I mean its not far off someone like Samiyam anyway.
Hyperdub have some mad faster bits, there is a really good LV & Quarta330 track that runs at about 150-ish too I think.
That reminds me LV album on the way for Keysound woop!
― jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, it reminds me more of brainfeeder sidechain-heavy rap beats, it has a looseness that i like

new-ish direction for honest jon's?
i thought it was mostly a reissue label.
― Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:59 (fourteen years ago)
The last few years they have been doing the odd bit of dance stuff. Actress has an album on there and a 12". T++ did a double 12" last year too. Mala remix of Moritz Von Oswald Trio. Shagaan Electro bits... Stuff like that. They're opening it up a bit now I think. They still do re-issues too. I think Actress hinted at album number two for Honest Jons on twitter recently, should be good, can't get enough of Splazsh.
― jimitheexploder, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:02 (fourteen years ago)
oh yeah!, the actress album. it's the kind of stuff i should love, but i've had trouble getting into it. strangely enough, i think it has something to do with an odd, negative-reaction to the cover sleeve. just something about it bugs me.
― Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)
I really like the sleave. Actress isn't the easiest dude to get into though, it took me a while and I'm a sucka for this stuff. It really crept up on me after a while.
― jimitheexploder, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)
Xpost: Funny you should say that. When I first got all enthusiastic about Actress pretty much just because I really liked the cover of Hazyville (this was before Splasz came out). Then I heard his music and lost all interest, until I saw him live/got Splasz (whose cover I'm indifferent about), which I quite enjoy, even in spite of its various idiosyncrasies (like, why are all the high end frequencies cut off on Seniorita, for instance?)

Butterz March Zip sounds fresh: http://ymlp.com/zcww9V Two sweet Royal T remixes, what really cautgh my eye though was a couple of UK Funky remixes from Fis-T doin DOK and Walton taking on Royal T. There's a really nice slipery smooth grimy bassline DJ Q track as well. Pretty epic Air Bubbles remix from Exo Remedy and all.

― jimitheexploder, Friday, 4 March 2011 12:24 (fourteen years ago)
I kind of dig that xxxy remix too, it might be my way into How To Dress Well. I'm finding it hard to get into and every time I try I usualy end up reaching for Dro Carey or The-Dream instead haha.
― jimitheexploder, Friday, 4 March 2011 12:25 (fourteen years ago)
All I've wanted to listen to since the year started is deep house sounds. Never paid more than a bystander's attention to it up until now, but this thread has been essential.

Kind of dig the xxxy remix of How to Dress Well, although I think I like the original more. The appeal of it is that it sort of drifts by.
Another Girl is the next Jacques Greene single, yet another fip of Ciara's Deuces Rmx and possibly my favourite one yet? Not as propulsive as Nguzunguzu's, a little housier, perhaps. Nice to have the official version of it now, tho.

― lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 19:20 (fourteen years ago)
Not feeling the Egyptrixx album tbh. I've always thought he was kind of a weak link in the Night Slugs roster.
― Number None, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)
God, seeing Egyptrixx live a few months ago was tediously boring. Then again night Slugs is total anathema to me and I generally fail to see why anyone likes any of it, so...
― EDB, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 04:02 (fourteen years ago)
i'm pretty sure you've already said so multiple times, too
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 08:49 (fourteen years ago)
i am listening to the kingdom xlr8r podcast and feeling it, btw.
egyptrixx album is ok but i can't seem to find my way into his stuff like i can with the rest of the night slugs roster.
subeena's forthcoming single is great btw, esp the insane drums on the b-side "end of reason".
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 08:52 (fourteen years ago)
I've always thought Egyptrixx was one of the strongest and most consistent artists on the Night Slugs roster. He's not as brash and hasn't made an anthem yet but they've got loads of people who do that.
Did you hear the Egyptrixx remix of Subeena's last release? Its a bit good: http://bleep.com/index.php?page=release_details&releaseid=26940 I'm enjoying the up and coming one too.
― jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 09:20 (fourteen years ago)
The Egyptrixx album is boring but you'd be stretching it to say it's that representative of the Night Slugs sound. There are a couple of nice moments but otherwise it's pretty standard drab clumpy tech-house. Reminded me more of an uninspired Craig Richards set at Fabric than anything else. A few more tracks that were more than a one-note bassline and some pitch-bending noises would help.

Sits well here just as well as the uk funky thread, killer stuff.
― jimitheexploder, Thursday, 17 March 2011 17:48 (fourteen years ago)
Looking forward to listening to the Ossie mix.
Ramadanman/Pearson Sound hasn't really changed his sound for this release though. It's all "post-dubstep" but if there's a Night Slugs "sound" (which given the diversity of their releases is a bit difficult to articulate anyway) I'd identify it more with Bok Bok, Mosca etc.
Really loving the Pearson Sound/Ramadanman FabricLive mix. Dude's variety of approaches hang together really well in the mix (i.e. the distance between "Wad" and "Grab Somebody" seems a lot smaller, in a good way, than if you listen to the two tunes in isolation), and the whole thing implies "techno" more strongly than I would have expected. But, like, those great techno nights I've been to in the last ten years (and never really knowing who or what was playing) where the music's machinic syncopation is pushed as far as it can go without flipping into IDM or nu-electro, i.e maintaining that driving propulsion.
― Tim F, Thursday, 17 March 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)
"Wad" is still my favourite thing he's done. Must get round to listening to the Fabric mix.
― Number None, Thursday, 17 March 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)
The Ossie mix is pure vibes, he's ace.
Night Slugs kind of have a fluid sound I guess they just do there thing. They can play a load of diffrent styles but they draw it all together really well so it never really sounds disjointed. A lot of the bass people are doing that at the moment, its tough to pin down as a single sound. Hyperdub has its own aesthetic as does Hessle. Night Slugs, etc... they all share bits here and there but make their own moves in diffrent directions. Its more of a scene than a single genre at this point.
― jimitheexploder, Friday, 18 March 2011 09:59 (fourteen years ago)
I am half-baking a theory that Ramadanman/Pearson Sound is a house DJ really, albeit one who came up through dubstep. Probably need to listen to his Fabric mix before fully committing to that one yet. Certainly the set I saw him play in Croatia was a bassy, clatteringly rhythmic take on house and techno.
― Matt DC, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:23 (fourteen years ago)
I am just now discovering the whole Night Slugs aesthetic
I really need to stop sleeping on things

Dub house is always a thing but not particularly THE thing at the moment (arguably it's never THE thing anymore - it's more of a self-sustaining cottage industry at this point).
― Tim F, Sunday, 20 March 2011 09:51 (fourteen years ago)
The Soul Clap Resident Advisor mix from late last year is my favourite house mix in about the last 12 months and is a handy snapshot of the current cruisy sultry US/Canadian deep house sound, good for relaxed party vibes:

Airhead are onto something, pretty sure he's in James Blake's live band at the moment can't remember where I heard that mind so I could be wrong. I'd love to hear an Airhead full length at some point I think it'd suit him.
Talking of full lengths things are hotting up a bit now with Kode9 & Spaceape's on the way, 2562 out at the end of the week, LV in the works, hopefuly LHF and Damu at some point. Hyetal and Jam City too...

ok, i listened to some hype williams and it sounds like sub-washed out chillwave. am i missing something?
― adult music person (Jordan), Thursday, 31 March 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)
I can lean either way on Hype Williams depending on which record I listen to: 'Find Out What Happens When People Stop Being Polite and Start Getting Reel' I found to be really awful, the samples are really shit, cheesey and over used. But 'One Nation' is kinda cool its nice and laid back, there are four really good tracks on it the rest is just kind of nice and dreamy. Late night material you can let wash over you and sink into. I do beleave they are from that sketchy chillwave/lo-fi blog scene thing though yeah I was suprised they got picked up by Hyperdub, I hope they pull off something deserving when they drop an album they could go one way or the other.

lots of ill records coming out, but we don't really have a beat scene thread (apart from the flylo one i guess). so it's not dance music but here are random thoughts on stuff i've been feeling:
lapalux, many faces out of focus epjonwayne, bowser (mostly 'be honest')mono/poly, manifestations ep (not great as a whole, but 'forest dark' is sick. great 4/4 - 3/4 transition.)elos, flying sky fortress (more crunchy 8 bit synths)matthewdavid, outmind (not much to hold on to melody- or hook-wise, but i have no idea how he gets some of his sounds...i mean, i get what he's doing with cassette tape samples and compression etc, but it's so different from the way i work that it sounds really opaque). tokimonsta, creature dreams ep

I must be slacking, we've had a mix from Lapalux and I've not posted it haha

1. Lapalux – Intro2. Culp – Agnes3. Chocolate girl – Sakura4. Lapalux – How it feels (I want you to know)5. InfinitiRock – NunTaken6. SeePM – De Caca PuPulu7. S.Mahabra – Nice to meet you8. Lapalux – Lost consonants9. Quetzal – Give something10. Mount Kimbie – 50 Mile View11. Lapalux – Operate12. Abel – Free birds13. LDFD – Outtacontrol14. Aphex Twin – Xtal15. Lapalux – Kecksys Farm16. Teeth - Shawty [502] & Hessle Audio Presents: 116 & Rising both out at the end of the week, pretty esential if you ask me.
Hessle Audio presents 116 & Rising
Postby rob booth » Thu Apr 07, 2011 5:54 pmFACT can reveal that Hessle Audio will release an epic 2xCD/3×12″/digital label compilation entitled 116 & Rising on May 16.
Curated by the imprint’s three co-founders – Ben UFO, Pangaea and Pearson Sound (AKA Ramadanman) – the CD version is comprised of 12 brand new tracks tracks, with contributions from every single producer who’s previously released a 12″ on Hessle, plus a couple of guests, and a second disc collecting previously released highlights from the catalogue.
That means fresh heat not just from Pangaea and Pearson Sound but also Blawan, Joe, Elgato, Untold, Cosmin TRG, Peverelist, James Blake and Addison Groove, and a couple of unexpected treats – such as D1‘s never-before-released archive cut ‘Subzero’ and a killer from the hitherto little-known Randomer. Most of the tracks on Disc 2 are modern dancefloor classics, and hardly require any introduction – among them Martyn’s eerily suspended, deeply affecting remix of TRG’s ‘Heartbroken’, Untold’s none-more-livewire ‘I Can’t Stop This Feeling’, Pangaea’s ‘Why’ and James Blake’s ‘Buzzard & Kestrel’ (a track he’s arguably yet to better).
The new tracks will constitue the vinyl edition of 116 & Rising, which is a 12″ triple-pack; the striking artwork on both CD and vinyl editions is by Will Bankhead. Oh, and there’ll be a launch party for the album at London’s XOYO club on Friday 13 May.
CD101. Elgato – Music (Bodymix)02. Untold – Cool Story Bro03. Blawan – Potchla Vee04. Pearson Sound – Stifle05. Joe – Twice06. Randomer – Brunk07. Pangaea – Run Out08. Cosmin TRG – Bijoux09. i checked out the young montana record. it's really detailed and accomplished technically, and it's got some melody to it, but it's so busy and frenetic that i can only listen to a couple tracks before feeling like i'm getting a headache. there's some ill stuff going on though, alpha pup has had a crazy amount of strong releases in the last few weeks.
― adult music person (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)
That second disc of Hessle Audio classics looks pretty hard to f with.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah Hessle are a hell of a label, the new stuff on the first disc is top notch from what I've heard as well. The quality control is something else. I can't get enough of Twice and Stifle. I think I posted the vids of them way back in this thread somewhere.
Talking of mad beat scene stuff too, we just got a mix from Eprom: http://www.sonicrouter.com/2011/05/sr-mix-82-eprom-rwina/ it's pretty rawkus.

moonship, you are a big 2562/made up sound booster - are you as disappointed by his new thing 'fever' as i am? i feel like he set up his new label just cz no-one else wanted to release it. so clunky and grooveless.
― ennui soundsystem, Monday, 16 May 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)
it's okay, an experiment i suppose. could have been more interesting, considering the sample sources.
― broodje kroket (dog latin), Monday, 16 May 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)
is that the disco samples thing?
xp ah
― adult music person (Jordan), Monday, 16 May 2011 15:55 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, that's the thing, he's usually so on point with the beats and the hooks, i thought joined with the disco palette he couldn't go wrong.
anyway, on a sidenote, lovin the swamp81/boddika/502 sound right now.
― ennui soundsystem, Monday, 16 May 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)
With 2562, I kind of don't see the point in sampling disco unless it's going to reflect the warmth and funkiness of it.
― broodje kroket (dog latin), Monday, 16 May 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)
Have we talked much about the Africa Hitech album on Warp yet?
― broodje kroket (dog latin), Monday, 16 May 2011 16:09 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i haven't picked up the new 2562 album and i'm not sure i will. i agree with what dog latin said and i'm sorry to see that he's decided to go back to the sound of reinforced records circa 2004 (broken beat shading into breakstep).
OTOH a made up sound killed it in 2010, sad to see that project drop off the map in 2011
― moonship journey to baja, Monday, 16 May 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)
New Guido mix: http://soundcloud.com/guidoproductions/29-min-mix-2011
Just his productions I think. It's quality too.
I wasn't maddly impressed with the latest 2562 album but its solid enough, sounds pretty tough and like a 2562 record. Its a bit like older A Made Up Sound stuff from the Short Cuts album that was more organic and dreamy. So it was kinda funny to see 2562 go in that direction and A Made Up Sound move in a dancier direction.
― jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 14:45 (fourteen years ago)
I can't comment on the 2562 album in its entirety (samples didn't impress me especially) but Aquatic Love Affair and This Is Hardcore are amazing.
― EDB, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 17:42 (fourteen years ago)
o rly?
what was amazing about them?
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:33 (fourteen years ago)
I dunno, I feel like they're a bit catchier and a bit more immersive than the rest of his stuff. I love the drums on this is hardcore, and the synths on aquatic family affair, and while I kind of don't see the point in sampling disco unless it's going to reflect the warmth and funkiness of it. is pretty much the case, I feel these two tracks perhaps reflect that warmth a bit better better (at least in Aquatic..).
I mean, they're nothing too out of the ordinary for 2562, but are just really well produced and enjoyable.
― EDB, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)
Those two are damn good, they really stick out when I hear them in mixes too.
This album might be more of a slow burner.
― jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, I think this might make more sense in the context of those two being released ahead of time as a single.

The new 116 & Rising comp on Hessle Audio is the nuts.
― broodje kroket (dog latin), Monday, 23 May 2011 09:17 (fourteen years ago)
I've hardly had anything else on since it came out. Hessle have been one of my favourite labels for ages everything they've done has been top notch. The comp sounds ace and they didn't even include Wad, Claptrap, Annaconda, Iddy, Router, The Bells Sketch, Blue, Grimelight all some of my favourite tracks. Just shows how strong the label is.
― jimitheexploder, Monday, 23 May 2011 09:31 (fourteen years ago)
I just wish I didn't have such thin walls on my terraced house, or I'd be caning it. Annoyingly, the bass response on these tracks is such that I fear for my neighbours' sanities whenever I turn the volume past 4.
― broodje kroket (dog latin), Monday, 23 May 2011 09:33 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah that bass travels. I'm always trying to find the right volume that wont annoy and sounds exciting lol esspecialy when I do my radio show on a Sunday night, its easy to get carried away when you're mixing this stuff.
― jimitheexploder, Monday, 23 May 2011 09:52 (fourteen years ago)
I know this all too well. If only there were insulated spaces where people could listen to loud music without disrupting others, possibly with drinking and dancing involved too...

FWIW, I reviewed the Africa Hitech album http://bit.ly/jxgjep
― broodje kroket (dog latin), Monday, 23 May 2011 13:26 (fourteen years ago)
Funny, i'm 180 degrees from you on this. I think the persistent tension of "Out in the Streets," its refusal to resolve, is precisely what makes it so brilliant. (Well, not *just* that. But that's a big part of it.)
― pshrbrn, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 19:43 (fourteen years ago)
The thing is, I really do like Africa Hitech - actually, no, I like the idea of Africa Hitech and love about 50% of it. What they have done, very admirably may I add, is draw attention to huge swathes of stuff I hadn't really thought to check out. I just can't see myself listening to the record in it's entirety again, but as individual cuts a lot of the tracks work just fine. Their rinse fm set the other day was killer - just think the album's a slight misfire when it comes to execution.

not really familiar with whatever circles he usually travels in but i quite enjoyed the randomer mix on dj q's show (where his track 'alize' is a mainstay) this week - less parched and more exuberant than most of yer taut clattery wonky stuff i seem to hear these days

Since the thread I started about Barbara Panther hasn't been very popular, I thought I'd big up her new single (produced by Matthew Herbert) here:

Her debut album came out this week, I still haven't gotten my copy in the mail, but I have high hopes for it.

Randomer is really good yeah: http://www.sonicrouter.com/2011/01/interview-randomer-super/ <<< mix there too.
His track on the Hessle comp is pretty big.

He's on Super which is Raffertie's label, alize is a banger.

I do like that song quite a bit, but it sounds more like a random bootleg by Zomby rather than one of his tracks. I mostly dig it cos it reminds me of that awsome Burial & Kode9 mix.

Ossie is a legend.
― jimitheexploder, Thursday, 9 June 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)
Ossie single is great, Hyperdub is having a weird year though (don't like Hype Williams' first EP for them, at all...)
Not crazy about the Bok Bok EP, but then again Night Slugs' Lil Silva release last year grew on me considerably (esp in light of his recent stuff), so
Even though there's an Nguzux2 thread already, excited to hear what they're doing on Kingdom's new label later this year (Kingdom's also putting out a few EPs himself I think, which will be ace)
― The Dutch of Dukes, Friday, 10 June 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)
I've only hear the Hype Williams in passing so I'm not sure about that yet, but they're kinda hit'n'miss anyway I do like One Nation quite a lot but the other bits I've heard from them kinda suck. So we'll see how it goes.
Hyperdub are pretty solid if you ask me this year they've had Funkystepz, Burial, Morgan Zarate, Kode9 & Spaceape album and they're all good to great. Plus DOK and Ossie on the way soon, sorted.
I really like that Bok Bok EP it feels like ages since we last had a good slab of Bok Bok on 12" that wasn't a remix or bootleg he always brings a load of raw energy to the table.

New Silkie album is... eh, okay. The rhythmic fluency and production nous are still there in spades, but it mostly feels a lot stiffer and stodgier than before, like he couldn't keep himself immune from dubstep's usual tendencies forever. There's a certain quintessentially Silkie-esque fleetfootedness and bounce that feels depleted here.
IDK maybe it's just that after 3+ years of obsession I'm no longer hearing what startled me. But then I throw back on Quest & Silkie's Uprooted mix from 2008 and it's like gahhhh still so amazing.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 22:59 (fourteen years ago)

― Tim F, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)
Your lack of enthusiasm is distressing. Did you like the EPs from the last year?
There's a Quest album coming out this year too, supposedly.
― matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Wednesday, 15 June 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)
This is based on 2 listens so I reserve the right to change my opinion.
At the moment my sense is that it's still good, but more "good for a dubstep album" rather than fist-pumping top ten of the year. Nothing seems on a level with say "Sky's The Limit" or "Concrete Jungle" or "Planet X".
I liked last year's "80s Baby" a lot, the EP from earlier this year a bit less but didn't listen to it enough to absorb really.

― 51 suggest gang (The Reverend), Wednesday, 15 June 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)
Above all, get Quest & Silkie's 11.07.08 Uprooted Mix, which is like all Quest & Silkie's best productions (plus one Mala tune) and is probably my favourite dubstep mix ever notwithstanding being almost entirely restricted to tunes from two similar artists.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 03:55 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah Silkie has been leaning in that clunky dubstep kinda direction for a while now, well he was the last few times I heard him spin dubs in clubs, pretty much every track had that generic halfstep clunk it was disapointing. I was hoping that end of things wouldn't creep into the new album that much.
There are a few good'uns on his recent EPs mind.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL1w3CzW378
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAi54N71dsE
They still have that float and skip with that heavy funk edge.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q1dAWlj-cE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXb6GwffPQA
Love these ones too.
― jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 08:08 (fourteen years ago)
It just seems odd to me that he'd go in that direction now of all times (though Mala kinda has too I think?).
There are some tracks on the album that superficially nod to post-dubstep (faster rhythms, vocal samples etc) but in general the feel is a bit more Benga than I'd like.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 08:14 (fourteen years ago)
I'm not sure I've heard much in the way of new Mala for ages now I've not made it to a DMZ in a while.
There is something a bit to Benga about some of this new Silkie stuff, I'm not sure its a deliberate post-dubstep nod in what he's doing though. He seems to be going for a jungle/rave thing, like an anti-social Cluekid/LD kinda thing.
There's one track on the latest EP called TechFunk which kinda nails the heavy blatant dubstep thing well, it bangs pretty hard but keeps it interesting too. Sounds like a grime beat really.
I hear Silkie and Swindle have been working together a bit, I think Butterz have been playing some bits. I've not had chance to lock in and check it yet mind. That could be interesting.
When I hear new Joker bits it gives me that Benga feeling too, its a shame. Still hopeful all these guys have some killer stuff in them mind.

Hope you enjoy the mix toby, I almost forgot I had it until the Uprooted link clicked. I was about to shout the guys on facebook to see if I could unearth it. Oh, do listen to old Silkie stuff Vahid. You know how lots of dubsteppers and postdubsteppers talk about recapturing the "Metalheadz sound" (or "Blue Note sound") but usually they mean sounding like a slowed down version of Fanu?
Silkie circa 2008-2010 actually sounds like the first disc of Platinum Breakz.

― Tim F, Saturday, 18 June 2011 22:12 (fourteen years ago)
^^ Indeed. So much musicians from the golden era of jungle and drum 'n bass come up with fodder nowadays, up to the point that you'd wish they didn't even bother. But it's more sad than silly, really. Trying to carry the corpse of that golden era into 2011: it's not a pretty sight. I am struggling to name one artist from 1993-1998 jungle/drum 'n bass era that is successfully making music now.
And it can´t be easy (and I say this without a trace of irony) to once have been on the forefront of a music and a scene as futuristic as d 'n b, to find yourself arisen from d 'n b's ashes only to see the whole aesthetic of that scene has changed beyond belief. You invented and set the trend once, to re-invent music or, more importantly and challenging, yourself yet again, must be so so hard.

Yeah, I suspect a drum 'n bass-themed 'Where are they now?'-thread would keep one puzzling for quite a while. You're naming the right names, though. So massive at the time, and seemingly completely forgotten now.
I remember how once Source Direct were like near superstars. The story that Aslett and Baker got £ 35.000 each from Virgin upfront for a new album, which they blew on BMW's and drugs was at one time - in my dnb universe - breaking news! Just found this, dated 2010. I've never heard this 'Vampire' he speaks of.

"instrumental grime" is such an impotent term at this point, commentators need to wake up to the fact that whether they sound like themselves or crossbreed or not bassline and grime are part of the one same cheap n' cheerful nu-ukg habitus

I'm really enjoying the grime/funky/bassline thing. They all work so well together. Can't get enough DJ Q, TRC, etc. Even Champion has a kinda bassline vibe going on at times. Really into what I've heard from DJ Pantha and J.G. too. Is BassBoy still making funky bits with Marcus Nasty I always dug that but it seemed to fizzle out a bit and I kinda got bored of Marcus a while ago so haven't checked.
― jimitheexploder, Friday, 24 June 2011 12:46 (fourteen years ago)
bassboy's been pretty quiet full stop since then, but yeah generally speaking bassline is one of a number of funky ententes that have waned of late

So the Machinedrum album is -after the first listen - really great. Not surprising because I love Sepalcure, to whom similarities do abound, but in a way that is unrestrained in a really stimulating and impressive way. I mean, in reading this incredibly OffTM post:
it's weird, these machinedrum tracks sound as sterile as i remember his '04 glitch-hop stuff sounding, but the sepalcure records are really lush. must be due to the other guy.
― hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Wednesday, July 20, 2011 1:26 PM (3 weeks ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink
I can't help but disagree because this album, compared with samples of this make it somewhat apparent that if anything MD is behind the lush, melodic washes and vocal treatments that make Sepalcure tracks so beautiful. I can't be sure, but I feel like maybe what the other guy is effectually doing is bringing down the manic quality of MD into something more restrained, into more a more basic dubstep/ r'n b-ish form (not a criticism!). This is like Sepalcure unbounded, taking its lush quality and letting it spread its wings outside its typically pared down bounds so as to just go fucking nuts, but also be very gentle (it's ridiculous how delicate this album sounds given how fast and wild the rhythms are). My only complaint is that it doesn't flow between tracks especially well, in that it sounds more like a compilation; but that's ultimately insignificant, especially when the tracks are so damn good.
― qpә (EDB), Saturday, 13 August 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

i knew it would be right up your street! i should persevere with the second half: i've been using it as a running mix but my run is generally over by about half to 2/3rds of the way through so maybe it just haven't clicked with it yet. the point where the peven everett track comes in is killer. a totally surprising choice and a brand new track to me.

some of the Rustie album is absolutely nailed-on terrific but there are these other bits - I think Ultra Thizz, as posted above, might be one - where it feels like he's employed such a tunnel vision dedication to conveying EUPHORIA THROUGH SYNTH that he's just ended up looping a bunch of millennial chart trance riffs
not even especially good ones

when I heard stuff like Mokum records and Aphex Twin through my mates older brother I was well into it. This same brother wrote bonkers gabber on DOS trackers
Haha, that was me.
― Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 09:35 (fourteen years ago)
Raises hand as well :-)
Man, DOS trackers... must have spent months playing around with that. Trying to make jungle though, not gabber. Creating a sample by quickly hitting pause on the cd player, using the mic to create and record beats, locked in the bedroom with some friends faffing about with this for hours... Life was good.
― Vision Kreayshawn Newsun (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, Impulse Tracker, really underrated - A mate and I used it for about 7 years, starting with gabba and then more techno/IDM stuff. We got really good at stretching that program well beyond its original intended use. Later said mate's little brother picked it up and started making this incredible psy-trance stuff (way better than any of the dreck that was popular at the time), migrating to Fruity Loops a few years later, and Sully was part of that crowd, but I knew him as a black metal fan more than a raver.
― Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:10 (fourteen years ago)
Impulse Tracker was the one we used! I would like to be able to run it on some old machine again just once, to 'feel' it again. It was that crazy vibe of trying to bend a fairly unintuitive program to your will (I take this is what you meant by stretching it beyond it's intended use?), and on a much more basic level: working on a computer, putting in these samples and ideas and structures and actually making music, yourself, just like that! I'm sad I lost the cassettes on which I recorded all the hours of music we made back then. Fruity Loops was the obvious next step, played about with that for a long time too.
I don't know Sully's music very well, but in a way I'm not surprised he was a black metal fan when young!

i like the breakdown/interlude or whatev but otherwise it's a cheeseball jingle that got ridiculously overplayed - maybe i got more exposure to it than usual being in nyc, and moreso gay clubs in nyc where this kind of track gets eaten up (ferrer being ferrer and in nyc means the track's going to be a bit popular already - then honey dijon had to do a remix and get that played all over the place as well).
people going "I HEARD YOU SAY HEY HEY!" is akin to people going "TONIGHT'S GONNA BE A GOOD NIGHT!" for me.

― mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Friday, 16 September 2011 14:37 (fourteen years ago)
i bought it because i swear i saw people bigging it up loads on here, but i must've mis-read because yeah, it is quite boring. lots of it reminds me of extended Rephlex Records material circa 2002.
― Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 16 September 2011 14:39 (fourteen years ago)
I think maybe people were bigging up autonomic in general and more specifically the collaborative stuff w/ d:bridge

― mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Friday, 16 September 2011 16:11 (fourteen years ago)
Admittedly I'm relatively new to instra:mental and have been eating up their releases this year so I wouldn't know where to place it in their broader oeuvre, but I guess you could say it scratched an itch. I think the way they take a certain older electro style, imbued with excellent sound design, and a broad range of feelings (i.e. they use moody pads).
As I said upthread, having pondered the idea of autechre (i.e. 90's Autechre) doing a club friendly album, this is as close an answer I have found.
― Pee Wee Hermeneutician (EDB), Friday, 16 September 2011 16:40 (fourteen years ago)
See, that's why I hear a polished-up version of the kind of Rephlex-based "acid house" that really wasn't all that good. The tracks last 6-7 mins each but many of them go nowhere and that "Overdose" sample might have been used before but isn't really doing anything original. I have a feeling it may work really well in certain contexts those.
― Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 16 September 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)
I agree the tracks don't really go places, but in spite of that they still work as small contained entities (usually like 4-5 minutes, actually) that are pleasant enough to listen to, and work well when put together in an album, or when put in a mix.
Mainly it's the immaculate sound design that does it for me.

Srsly so much awesome in there. Both TRC tracks are beauties. Silencer's History is skippy heaven. The V.I.Ps of Bipolar and Goomba might be even better that the originals. Royal-T's remix of Full Attention is killer. Brandy's Angel in Disguise over Airbubble is a bit weird tho...
― Mercer Finn, Monday, 19 September 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)
TRC released a free EP on twitter the other week too: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ry4c7m it's got some killer tracks on it. Haven't had chance to dig into the Butterz zip yet going to get on it soon.

― post, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 12:27 (fourteen years ago)
There isn't anything on the album like 'Lets Talk' unfortunatly. That might be my favourite thing they've done. It's pretty good though, I was kinda expecting more from it but there are still some standouts. I'm more impressed with random singles/tracks/12"s they've released since either on their own or whatever...

The looped freestyle samples and the long trancey breakdowns with the soft shimmering curtains of static. I'll probably hate it in 6 months but right now it sounds great.

I'm Siah Alan / Babylon Sister / sistern / probably something I've forgotten. The mods can rest assured that I'm done with the sock puppets.

What's really interesting about the mix is that it starts off quite fast-paced and drawing more on "traditional" techno-influenced dubstep* tropes (I forget which track it is that sounds like a techno take on "Pulse X") but it gets slower in tempo and more housey and 4/4, yet because the last tracks are based on these trancey structures, the energy and tension in the mix actually increases. Of course, this is all discounting that hipster-house version of "Rhythm Of The Night" that weighs the mix down two-thirds in.
*this could also read as dubstep-influenced techno to be honest
― "only girl in the kitchen" (boxedjoy), Monday, 14 November 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)
Anyone heard the new one by Author? I'm digging it so far - good to know someone's still making traditional dubstep (as opposed to brostep or post-dubstep stuff) without it sounding boring.

Ooh, I'm jealous.
Just bought the single from the album, and you reminded me to play it. Mmmmm.
I'm trying to find a reason to like UK pop dubstep/American brostep and its killing my soul. There's just sooo much shit.

I care! I just don't have much to contribute, I'm more of a taker than a giver when it comes to these sort of threads.
