altho i typically find ice cr?m funny, other times he is the king of smug unfunny trolling, imo. like, i picture him chuckling w/ self-congratulations every time he made a post & leaning back in his chair w/ steepled fingers. made lurking in both threads really unpleasant, whatever whiney's insecurities.

ilx break had to get cut short bcuz i wanted to see poll results -- so much http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_leftkrHJkw1qf8yek.gif -- anyway im out ~vanishes into fog~

i was surprised that the flames got more love than 'everything based' tbh, which was the better tape cuz it had all his dope shit from earlier this year

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

j0rdan's re-entrance to the other thread was amazing, kept hearing it in an angry mother voice

tbh if i hadn't agreed to go to lunch w/ my grandmother today i could've diffused the bomb in the other thread but oh well

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Friday, 7 January 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

naw, everything based feels kind off like some tossed together odds and ends compared to the flames and also too reliant on his "hoes on my dick" tracks, whereas the flames had more variety

i don't even vacuum, i'm roomba pimpin (The Reverend), Friday, 7 January 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

i should listen to 'blue flame' again

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

but like -- rich bitch, pretty boy, insane, age of information, t-shirt and buddens, wanton soup, the summer <--- that is lil b in 2010 for me, which is why i voted for 'everything based'

blue flame has a chunk of based freestyles

also it's fuckin Trap-A-Holics and it has that classic cover. it's safe to say that was the first time a lot of real hip hop fans saw Lil B pop up in their interent travels

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

btw i don't know what the results are

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

listened to the mellowhype once, didn't get into it. should prob give it another try. i know odd future and lil b are doing important and innovative and admirable things but i can never bring myself to really care about gonzo/punk shit :(

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

i know odd future and lil b are doing important and innovative and admirable things but i can never bring myself to really care about gonzo/punk shit

Johnny Cheever (some dude), Friday, 7 January 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

well.... the music isn't really the same -- like i could give someone an odd future release and it would just scan as normal rap music, albeit violent/abhorrent etc

lil b is a different realm, musically speaking

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

i put domo pretty high up on my list. i also put tyler in it.

did tyler get disq'd because it was 09?

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Friday, 7 January 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

tbh I wouldn't really expect you to like either just because they are so gonzo/punk xps

what's really special about odd future beyond the horrorcore element?

every so often lil b really hits the spot for me - totally get the whole #BASED thing, his whole aesthetic, i'm just rarely in the mood to actually listen to it, and it's not something you can really force

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

I need to check out the MellowHype. I'd rate the OFWGKTA releases I heard this year as Radical > Tyler > EARL.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 January 2011 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

what's really special about odd future beyond the horrorcore element?

the rapping is often very good on a technical level

i.e. EARL

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

what i like about odd future are when the actual touching moments pop up, like Tyler going off about his read dad, etc, it comes as a curveball amidst all the horror stuff

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

lex, you get #based but you don't get kids who are actually rapping?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

what's really special about odd future beyond the horrorcore element?

well, the whole horrorcore element is really only tyler and earl, but there's this whole vulnerability lurking just beneath the veneer + dudes are just really talented rappers plus they have a dope lo-fi aesthetic.

i don't even vacuum, i'm roomba pimpin (The Reverend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

odd future was also the most inspiring music to me this year as well -- there was an umatched excitement for me in terms of kids creating something w/ such a defined and identifiable aesthetic

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

why is the "kids" part important. i mean they're not that much younger than a lot of other people out there making music are they?

Johnny Cheever (some dude), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, they're like 16-19 instead of like 22-27

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

idk it's a lot because they rap from teen pov, not grown man shit, and also technical precociousness on some "nas and az were teenagers when they made life's a bitch"

ciderpress, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

most rappers i dig are at least 8-10 years older than odd future

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah but the rapping itself is really good. And the beats too. Yeah their horrorcore steez isn't for everyone, but remember, Method Man once threatening to sew an man's asshole shut and keep feeding and feeding him.

rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

like people call Avi Buffalo "impossibly young" and that dude is like 21. The most visible member of this group is 16 years old—like old enough to be sent to fucking boot camp by his mom.

predeep natsvitika (forksclovetofu), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but method man wasn't just about horrorcore. and three 6 mafia actually made their horror sound genuinely overwhelming and dark and menacing - w/odd future as j0rdan said earlier, if you're not paying attention you'd just think it was any hip-hop mixtape w/above-average rapping but no real energy or sense of fun

xps

im cool w/ people being defensive about odd future, its weird to me though when you guys try to make the case that its somehow 'superior' to 'other rap' -- like this weird strawman gangster rap that takes itself soooo seriously ... the biggest gangster rap hero on this board for the last few years has been gucci who doesnt take himself seriously whatsoever. and odd future dudes repeatedly claim inspiration from the gangster stuff that shakey would *r m d e* at i.e. waka.

i think the punk ethos by way of rapping makes sense as a defense but itt lex is being pretty reasonable about explaining why he doesnt like it. i feel similarly altho more 'i would have loved this when i was 16 ... but im not' than 'i never would have loved this'

its also weird to me that like ... "it's so obvious they DON'T drink that drug concoction (it would probably literally kill everyone who did) and half of their "bleeding" is obviously just for shits and giggles."

so whats so great about insincerity & irony exactly? they're tools used just as sincerity is used by lil boosie, it doesnt make one inherently better than the other like i feel that post is arguing

i liked odd future more than 'other rap' this year w/ i guess the exception of e-40 and like 'hard in da paint' but its not a general case or anything

i mean odd future works w/ a sensibility & 'language' thats a lot closer to the other music that i primarily listen to - its v much a subjective thing - so i 'get' why i gravitate towards it way more than freeway or w/e but i wouldnt make the case that its inherently 'better' just that its successful and compelling when taken on its own terms

The thing is, there's only so much I can listen to Odd Future, too. It's the same reason I was never into Slim Shady LP-era Eminem, or songs like "Kim" (which I detest); much like Lex, that aesthetic just doesn't do much for me. also just wanna say that youth was also important to jerk, and it's not like no one ever mentioned the youth element of various emergent cultures. and this is rather like jerk was produced by one group of teens, crewing up like teens do, with whatever youthful virtues of energy & fun & etc. and with sophisticated raps & technical chops, which jerk was always (charmingly?) deficient in. so i guess 1) it's not like youth wasn't important to jerk 2) there are unsurprising reasons ppl mention they are kids from time to time

I think the thing I am most furious about right now is that I've only checked out two things on this list and I've loved them both, completely throwing into disarray my baseline assumption that I hate modern hip-hop.

(the other being "Respect It")

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

yes "pop Off" is pretty great

I think there's a certain momentum level in modern rap needs to attain otherwise it's like kryptonite to me; possibly I can blame my "faster FASTER" rave/jungle/dnb years on this since a lot of these tracks reappropriate a lot of the same sonic palette so I expect way more aggressive energy and a faster tempo in the beats than I'm going to get.

6. Curren$y - Pilot Talk/Pilot Talk II
4. Earl Sweatshirt - Earl
9. Roc Marciano - Marcberg

didn't vote for:

28. Styles P and DJ Green Lantern - The Green Ghost Project
i'm a huge styles p fan but me and this album didn't get along

21. Gucci Mane - Jewelry Selection

good tape could've voted for it really but didn't

19. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

goons please

17. Lil B - Red Flame/Blue Flame

both pretty good but 'everything's based' is the one i burnt for my car and the one i listened to most

14. MellowHype - BlackenedWhite

only a couple of good tracks imo

11. Roach Gigz - Roachy Balboa

don't really get roach gigz :(

10. Tyler, The Creator - Bastard

great album but tyler is so annoying on twitter i decided not vote for it

7. Big K.R.I.T. - K.R.I.T. Was Here

liked this but it fell out of rotation pretty quickly - lack of personality?

5. Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty

brilliant album felt bad about not voting for it but honestly didn't listen to it as much as the albums i voted for

3. E-40 - Revenue Retrievin': Day Shift/Revenue Retrievin': Night Shift

i don't like e-40 *ducks*

whitney from mtv's the city (tpp), Saturday, 8 January 2011 02:27 (fourteen years ago)

i actually had a huge change of heart re e-40 & revenue retrievin ended up my #2

flopson, Saturday, 8 January 2011 02:30 (fourteen years ago)

not entirely unrelated to your & rev's prodding tbh

sad i missed this thread. then again, kind of lame this had to be the thread where lex discovers odd future. where is the original & what happened w that?

Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Return of Chico Dusty
Yelawolf - Trunk Muzik / 0-60
Big KRIT - KRIT wuz here
Luca Brazi - Brainfood
E-40 - Revenue Retrievin' - Night Shift/Day Shift
Curren$y - Pilot Talk I and II
Devin tha Dude - Suite #420
Pill - 1140 The Overdose
Das Racist - Sit Down Man

Shit i shoulda listened to more but instead just downloaded over the course of the year, spun once or twice and got distracted instead and I tried to jam all this shit again at once over the past week and I really need to listen a few more times to determine if I love it and o I'm going to hell i guess and if you wanna you can put these on my fifteen but i guess they're not really? or they're just on my mind. or something :
ZRo - Heroin
The Roots- How I Got Over
Dave Banner/9th Wonder - Death of a Pop Star
Black Milk - Album of the Year
Freeway/Jake One - Stimulus Package
Cypress Hill - Rise Up

Shit I'm tempted to nominate just to fuck with deej and anyway I DID kinda like it but not enough to have it crack a top ten:
Asher Roth - Seared Foi Gras with Quince and Cranberry

also everything lil b did this year that i heard. but not the albums so much.

BONUS INFO: Fucka Wacka

i kiiiiinda agree w/tpp re: e-40's voice :/

not so much that it's stopped me enjoying his career and these albums, but it's prob why i'm not a megastan for him

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 8 January 2011 07:37 (fourteen years ago)

none of the vado trax i really jammed this year ("polo (remix)", "kick in tha door", the one w/mavado) ended up on slime flu for some reason?

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 8 January 2011 07:39 (fourteen years ago)

having relistened to roachy balboa last night i'd have def voted for it, probably as high as 5th - i really don't know why i failed to go back to it this year!

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 8 January 2011 07:41 (fourteen years ago)

yeah my two favorite tracks by him this year ("ain't a thang to me" & "usually do") didn't make the album either, but there's some good stuff on there ("wake up," "crimesquare," "beat knockin',"the greatest," etc.). I thought it was just okay at first but I've been coming back to it a lot

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 8 January 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

Lady Leshurr - 01:21 Mixtape
Young Lyric aka Lyrikkal - 2 Lyrikkal
Na'Tee - Guess Who's Coming 2 Dinne

have to check still for all of these, & somehow totally forgot abt rah digga's return, even tho i think i posted the lead leak track to swag

it had something abt chickenheads rapping liek robots in it iirc ;)

zvookster, Saturday, 8 January 2011 07:51 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it's plausible to think of the entire rah digga album as motivated by being pissed off with nicki minaj

young lyric is best consumed thru her youtubes. such swag!

Last question: Hillary or Michelle Obama?

Both!! I'm global like Hillary and the new First Lady like Michelle!! Seriously though, they are 2 of my top role models because they are smart, strong, beautiful women who prove that girls can be leaders of the world and do anything boys can do (only better).

Don't really want to post my ballot because I forgot two of my favourite releases (The Pack Is Back & Incarcerated would have knocked RAWSE off and I'd look cooler.)

'Lito was my #1. Burn One has to be the best DJ/Producer in the game atm, everything he does is gold. And Starlito is surprisingly tight writer for such a laid back voice. The pair together just *click* and Ren. Gangster is sublime.

I like this list. I find the Waka exhausting and cannot listen to it in 1 go but I totally love like half of it, at least.

2010 seems like a proper turning point creatively. The rise of creative+control type vids, dudes paying more attention to artwork, trying to have direction in their music such as limiting how many producers they'll have on a record to keep the sound on point. New gen got vision. Heres to it continuing in that direction.

is lex the only one to vote for pink friday?

that was a bit of a "real talk" vote - i was as dismissive as anyone when it came out (not so much disappointed cuz i expected how watered down it'd be - or seem, anyway) - i'm just not going to front on how much i came back to a lot of that album, esp with the bonus tracks, and how GREAT it is when it's good

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

i mean sure the rah digga album, say, is "better", but at the same time there's nothing on it that's clocking up the last.fm scrobbles a tenth as much as the best stuff on pink friday

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

looking forward to new shit from her tho

dunno if you noticed (prob not) but i thought it was pretty lol #shotsfired that tom b. at pfork gave bun's album 5/10 after the source gave it 5 mics

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

'the number was right, its just the scale that was off'

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

i guess thats what i mean-- like does anyone give a shit what the source has to say anymore

gr8080, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

does anyone give a shit what the source anyone has to say anymore

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

is this the real life
is this just fantasy

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno what whiney's point is, but in terms of editorial direction, no one cares what teh source has to say no

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

but like do dudes still rap about being the "next 5 mics" and shit is what i'm asking

gr8080, Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

well maybe, but only as a metaphor for "give me my credit" or w/e -- rappers don't actually care about the source/critics & there are really no influential rap critics right now

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

critics now are more influential in creating/forming a narrative or pushing an unknown artist -- i.e. noz w/ lil b or xxl w/ their freshman stuff -- but no critic/publication can affect an actual album/mixtape

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

i'm like mike, the greatest i need five mics
and five dykes to sit next to me fight night

^^

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:47 (fourteen years ago)

five dykes more helpful than five mics in that scenario.

Tim F, Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

i have this & still havent had a chance to listen

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

i like it alot obv...but yeah i don't know my list is def more "this is what i felt like listening to this year" than "this defines the year" kinda stuff...

one album on there in particular i was too chicken to even mention on ilx lol

mekka lekka hi mega-hiney hoes (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

u def posted abt dessa btw

zvookster, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

ah good! i can't remember all this shit i post tbh

yep dessa from doomtree, it's def (like i said) a lot more singer/songwriter type stuff than straight up hip hop

i like this one a lot, probably my fav

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-v9Ej8rkxE&feature=related

some of it's more singing style like this, my pal jess produced the music for this track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK8Jys3K6rI&feature=related

and finally i like this one alot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSxSCv7Cegc&feature=related

aaaanyway, this is all i guess corny and about as far from goon approved jams as possible, but i dunno, i ended up liking it a lot

mekka lekka hi mega-hiney hoes (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

saw DJ Premier nominate Ice Cube's "I am the West". I'd heard similar good comments on it, even though nobody said it was like amazing or anything.

after first listen, I'm bored to tears. dude just likes to throw up half-assed quick little verses and then run annoying choruses into the ground now.

mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 02:41 (fourteen years ago)

i really enjoyed it the first listen and then... never felt inclined to listen to it ever again.

flopson, Friday, 4 February 2011 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

im finally listening to that twista album, was that on your ballot? "darkness" is amazing

originoo gun kl0pper (k3vin k.), Friday, 4 February 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

i never got around to hearing it, which is ridiculous because i've heard every other post-Kamikaze Twista album nobody repped for and this one actually seemed to have some positive buzz

hercudeez and nuts affair (some dude), Friday, 4 February 2011 17:43 (fourteen years ago)

woulda voted for j stalin but honestly had forgot it came out in 2010

basedketball (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 February 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

al you'll def feel it -- some traxster beats

*kl0p* (deej), Friday, 4 February 2011 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

the whole thing is traxter just about

i wasn't really into the whole thing really though - first song is really great and i like "make a movie" but then there's "i do" and that ridiculous song about the mayans and 2012 and the album never really recovers after that

originoo gun kl0pper (k3vin k.), Friday, 4 February 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

a twista stan should at least listen tho, it's not bad

originoo gun kl0pper (k3vin k.), Friday, 4 February 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

that ridiculous song about the mayans and 2012

wait what? link?

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Saturday, 12 February 2011 04:11 (fourteen years ago)
