xzibit - criminal set feat krondon & jellyroll

i dunno about the album or xzibit's 00s career (altho this sounds weirdly better than i remember -- maybe just lesser but classic-era timbo sounds better w/ age) (also, lol choke me spank me pull my hair but 'criminal set' was dope imo & im not sure anyone is fucking with this guys 00s shit at this pt. .. just remembered as that dude who pimped your ride / useless internet meme

i had one Xzibit album in the 00s, liked it a bit...nothing I played a lot.

wonder if I should give the Kurupt releases from the 00s another chance. didn't ilke them at the time.

a fitting monument to late 90s hip-hop, and one of my favorite singles of the first half of the decade:

i think one the most underrated undie rap albums of the 90s was the Roosevelt Franklin. Its real emo at time, real funny at times and dude has a rock streak too. Kimani of Masterminds and Mr. Len of CoFlow iirc

yeah I mean I'm not surprised, it was a good album! does it even need to be "reassessed", or would that reassessment just consist of everyone going "oh yeah I liked that"

bernard snowy, Thursday, 13 January 2011 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

back to the original post of this thread i think keith has kinda gotten unfair blowback for being a weirdo ... doc oc is overrated to a degree but imo that has more to do w/ cult-of-automator than anything else. production on 'spankmaster' is tight! like a grimey dj quik

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Thursday, 13 January 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

i take it as a given that everyone already knows i think early mob figaz stuff needs to be reassessed

i guess in a related note i think cormega deserves attention beyond the (admittedly outspoken) cult of rap fans hes acquired

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Thursday, 13 January 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

Mac Dre, Nickatina too. i dont want to overdo the bay area stuff though since its like 70% of the rap i talk about now

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Thursday, 13 January 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

mac dre got critical attention but it was more for 'lol weirdo' hyphy angle than for his rapping, which imo is considerably great & distinctive ... hopefully mac dre-stylized dudes like roach gigz end up magnifying the attention he gets from rap nerdz

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Thursday, 13 January 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

does kool keith really get blowback, or is he just overlooked/unfashionable?

multi-xposts: I will go to bat for some anticon stuff, but honestly I tend to prefer the far-out slam-poetry shit and the skewed pop (cLOUDDEAD I think goes in this latter category) to the stuff that's still recognizably 'rap' like Sole or whatever.

doseone's freestyles are hilarious tho:

Nappy Roots and Anticon being mentioned in the same thread gives me a good opportunity to share my theory that R. Prophit and Doseone secretly have the same voice

Magill: a gorilla (some dude), Thursday, 13 January 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

I kind of agree with the original post. Drugs is a particularly brilliant cutbut the whole album is classic imo. The other keith gem from the 00s is Matthew, the album before this one. I always check for his releases but I haven't really enjoyed much since The Personal Album (2004).

Yes, but that doesn't even work against them on Wooden Leather. There's this real sense of community, and the beats are FANTASTIC. Like, amazing. Too good, in fact. They should've never gotten these beats. Humdinger is boring, Whiney.

yea Certified is pretty great, especially "Gangsta Walk"

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Friday, 14 January 2011 02:37 (fourteen years ago)

Rhymefest's album got really ruined by Mark Ronson bullshit but he's definitely better than he gets credit for and deserves some reassessment (although i never even heard his 2nd album from a few months ago). Consequence's LP was pretty solid too although like every other song was ancient by the time it was released so it felt kinda stale.

some dude, Friday, 14 January 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)

Masta Killah's album got a lot of critical credit but got overlooked on ILX too.

even though a lot of people bashed it I kinda liked Tha Dogg Pound's unauthorized compilation album (what was it caled, something like 2003 or something, i don't remember). it's no Dogg Food but it is pretty fun.

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Friday, 14 January 2011 02:39 (fourteen years ago)

the thing with the Consequence album is that it didn't age well with me, like I loved it when I got it, especially the Uncle Raheim song, but on my next listen I had already tired of a lot of it. but I still consider it pretty good.

I got into Rhymefest cuz I saw him open for Tribe in 06 and he was electric live....

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Friday, 14 January 2011 02:39 (fourteen years ago)

im gonna argue against deltron. i had that record back when & liked it at the time but ive gone back to a bunch of the stuff & imo its not aged too great at all.

bigg jus' (from company flow) 'black mamba serums' was an interesting album iirc - restless and paranoid and fractured and angry and sentimental and scarred etc

youtube.com/watch?v=YLvSabOtzOU 'plantation rhymes'
youtube.com/watch?v=A0zOV2-kT7I 'dedication 2 peo'
youtube.com/watch?v=_aOJhX7DC2w 'i, triceratops'

or just a big barrel of nonsense. still some kinda odd feat though

r|t|c, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

ha yes!! i think that might have been the 1st promo i was ever sent when i started writing for stylus lmao

*gets the power* (deej), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:16 (fourteen years ago)

think there were two versions of d4l's album but the older one doesnt deserve its joke rep at all. 'scotty' was pretty seminal in the end too i guess (for better or worse)

da backwudz were badly misrepresented by jokey singles, probly nothing worth reassessing though

lil jon's buddy bohagon on that had charisma though, shame he never got an album

Another really good album, could probably make a whole thread on Houston's seminal witchhouse sound:

I might be the only one to think so, but this is one of my favorite albums ever. Almost perfect front to back.

a lot of club & street bangers with great softer songs in between.

*gets the power* (deej), Friday, 14 January 2011 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

i remember when dudes were UP IN ARMS that rakim would appear in a juelz santana video. that song was dope tho.

flutes & fucking mexican death horns (The Reverend), Friday, 14 January 2011 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

i will rep for clouddead etc. i dig experimental rap but hate when that either becomes a) indie or b) 'music for the advancement of..' puke. but that stuff was critically well received anyway so hardly needs to be reassessed. i can't help but feel sorry for a lot of those guys ...what a backlash haha

whitney from mtv's the city (tpp), Friday, 14 January 2011 21:16 (fourteen years ago)

i fucking love juelz and will never accept vado as being anything other than a sub-par juelz without the sense of humour but whatever

whitney from mtv's the city (tpp), Friday, 14 January 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

i actually dig that 'ur killing me' song tho
