DL, if (like me) you're a song-jumper, then it won't pick up the listen. I think it scrobbles if you've listened to more than half of the track? Quite often I listen to the intro/1stverse/chorus then bounce off somewhere else and it won't scrobble the track. Scrobbling from an iPhone (I assume that once it's set up it'll be the same as an ipod) is even worse cos it won't recognise a played track unless itunes recognises a play, which only happens when you play the whole thing.

it's all worth checking out if you dig the aesthetic. small variations in style over a multitude of official albums, side projects, limited releases, etc. if you can find the Harmony of the Spheres comp, it has a fantastic Bardo track and lots of other good stuff on it as well. i haven't heard the new album yet.

suggest you look for Dilate next -- my fav official album they've put out, by far.

I'm kinda embarrassed by mine because just as I was going through a mainstream r&b/hip hop bender when I started to serious scrobbling. I'm trying my best to diversify.

Obviously the similarity engine could be improved by assuming an artist's absence from one's scrobbling history is an indication of disinterest, with the implied negative value increasing as some function of the size of the user's library, and implied likelihood that one has heard of said artist.

I've achieved more precision manually in my selection of "favorites" on ratemymusic, seeding it with people who rated obscure albums I love highly, and who have rated a lot of albums in a bell-curvish scoring distribution, then relentlessly pruning out the ones who also rate albums I have little potential interest in. Its around 70 users, who have guided me directly to my favorite albums of last year, and point out missing gems I passed on decades ago...

That sounds really cool! Did you have to go to the effort of actually rating all your music?

No. There's an option under charts to include only ratings by "friends" (aka favorites if you don't want to inform them of your machinations) in the sites calculation of charts for genres, years, or composites. I just picked favorites whose tastes (like mine) thread between without dwelling on popular genres like metal, rap/r&b, CMJ indie, P4k groupthink, post-85 goth, the peculiar shared tastes of certain Polish universities, etc. Its easy to build a population of candidates by their ratings on obscure albums you like (ignore the ones who don't rate much, or rate everything highly), its harder to prune the ones who like albums you disdain as the interface seems to require you record their names and then go into your_user_page/friends/edit_friends page.

Otherwise, democracy turns the experience into ratemymetal.

Yes to all that. Keep seeing things I put on once and can't remember if I like, maybe can't even remember listening to at all, on my compatibility matches.

One possible reason: the "bands in common" thing now really skews towards recent listening. I played the first 4 tracks of a new album last week and didn't like it so never listened again; looked at the page of the person who'd recommended it to me and they were playing it right then and it was one of our listed matches.

People I know I share general tastes and all-time favourite bands with will come up as "compatible" or not based on whether they've listened to the same album as me in the past 2 weeks. And I don't listen to that much Beefheart but I guess everyone dug out their favourite track/album when he died (RIP obv) and now he's listed as a match about 6000x itt.

i don't mind the emphasis on recent plays re: compatibility artists, with any normal profile it's what you want, but it's kind of useless for people i know on ilx, because we've largely all been checking out the same things recently, so what it's more valuable to know is the unexpected common likes that we may not have played lately.

like warpaint have shown up in tons of these for me, i only listened to their album twice to check it out and don't even like it that much!

Exact same process I had with that Warpaint album - 2x listened, 2x not entirely impressed and ultimately confused why it keeps topping top 10 of 2010 charts abound. I see little redeeming value in it's overly long and somewhat monotonous songs aside from that one member who's an absolute fox, but otherwise, I'm pulling the girl-power card.

Ah, I see, that sounds reasonable. I tend to only download on an album by album basis and any actual curious listening is usually done via youtube, so there must be dozens of bands I encounter weekly that are never logged.

I think the FLC was awesome but by the time it got round to my slot most of the groups I had wanted to plug had already been done. Felt like the end was natural and painless.

It's too bad we established early on that the Listening Club threads were genre-specific. A general interest Listening Club would've worked well and opened itself up to longevity just because there's an endless supply of music to pick from.

Ugh, this is such a problem. I do mostly mindless mechanical stuff at work so within one work day I can listen up to 7-10 albums on my ipod. I come home, plug it in - nothing. My charts still reflect the last time I listened to music on my computer, approx. something like 14 days ago.

The problem I had is that I manually update my ipod instead of syncing it in itunes. To get scrobbling to work, I had to go into the last.fm client and choose:

Help > Diagnostics > iPod Scrobbling

then in the drop-down menu I chose "I manually manage my iPod" and hit Scrobble iPod.

I noticed that this threw out lots of tracks, but it also scrobbled lots of tracks as well. As I mentioned though, it did scrobble multiple plays under a single time stamp, which was pretty annoying for me since I was scrobbling tunes going back 6+ months.

today a coworker brought my attention to a last.fm based dating site, tastebuds.fm. seems like something that could lead to absolute terribleness.

hmmm... when I try and sync my ipod for scrobbling, it tells me there are no scrobbled songs and gives me soem error codes. Anyone else had this problem?

Yeah I always have problems getting my ipod to scrobble, usually says there are no scrobbles, the only way I got it to work is go into Help -> Diagnostics -> Ipod Scrobbling -> Scrobble Ipod, that used to work.

Unfortunately since I installed the latest version of Itunes I have to restore my ipod to factory settings every time I plug the piece of shit into my laptop, so it's impossible to scrobble.

Users of online music site Last.fm will have to pay for its mobile phone service starting from next week.

Until now, the site has provided its personalised radio for free for mobiles, making money by placing adverts between songs instead.

However, it now says this is "not practical" and is instead asking users to pay for an ad-free service.

Listening via the web will remain free but charging is a "rational" move, the site's Matthew Hawn told BBC News.

"We think that the best experience is ad-free," said Mr Hawn, Last.fm's head of product.

"It's not that we're losing buckets of money on our service... but we're trying to make rational decisions about our business model."

From next Tuesday the new mobile service will cost £3 a month, a price which will allow users to listen to personalised radio stations - but not to pick out individual songs.

The move puts the site directly into competition with rivals such as Spotify, which charges £10 a month for ad-free, on-demand access across the web and mobile phones.

Users who listen on the Last.fm website will not have to pay for any services, and Microsoft has agreed to subsidise the costs so that users who listen using their Xbox or Windows Phone 7 handset will still be able to do so for free.
User complaints

The announcement was met with some concern from users, who complained on the company's blog that they that they felt it was not a positive development.

"May as well just get Spotify to listen to music on mobile then," said one user.

"Makes sense," admitted another, "But I'd rather have adverts and keep it free".

It is the latest in a series of moves to scale back services by Last.fm, which is based in London but was bought by American media conglomerate CBS in 2007.

Last year the site scaled back on-demand streaming for many users around the world, and turned off some specific radio station features shortly before Christmas.

However Mr Hawn said that the introduction of mobile subscription marks the end of major changes in the way the service works.

"It's the last thing we're going to do," he said. "I feel very positive about the rest of our services and I would never consider turning those off."

Instead, he said, the company plans to launch a new mobile application next week to address concerns that some users have had over quality of service.

The music site was seen as a major British success story during the so-called "Web 2.0" boom, building a large user base before being sold in May 2007 for $280m - £140m at the time.

Since the takeover, however, progress seems to have slowed down. The site's founders have all left the company and the true costs of music licensing mean the site has yet to make a profit.

James Cridland, managing director of the Media UK website and a radio futurologist, said financial concerns were spreading across the online industry - despite the fact that there was a clear public appetite for online radio.

"There is a real market there," he said. "According to figures from Rajar [the radio industry measurement group] there are 2.6 million people a week [in the UK] who use personalised radio services like Last.fm or Spotify."

"But over the last six months we've seen a lot of people start charging for all kinds of things. Maybe this is another part of the commercialisation of the web."

Guess that sucks, but right now, I'm really just using it to scrobble, track and share my listening tastes anyway.

Same here, that's what attracted me to last.fm anyway but the streaming was handy at times, but now I spotify anyway.

This is such an inconvenience (for being cheap) but it's an understandable inconvenience. Being a subscriber is major cheap on last.fm and I was thinking about becoming a member anyway. With Spotify not coming to the United States anytime soon this is a good alternative.

Shan't be paying to subscribe, as Spotify wins hands down. Yeah, I basically just use it to scrobble and log.

its nice, i use it alot on my roku player at home (have to subscribe for it to work properly) since I have a nice stereo system thats better than streaming through my altec lansing soundock. plus i like ad-free...and plus $18 for 6 months.

Yeah I know. The price is not that bad at all and since I'm in the US Spotify is a no go. I mean there is Grooveshark but it has a very messy interface.

I already subscribed to Last.Fm yesterday. I liked listening to the radio with no interruptions. I saw that the last.fm blog has 559 comments of mostly people being "skinflints" as Algerian said. Because I am a newbie I'm surprised by this bitching from other last.fm users. I never experienced the complaints others were going through.

It had me thinking a lot about internet user's entitlement and how things are overblown online, but if you put it in an offline world perspective it's not a big deal at all. Plus, I was comparing last.fm's app with other apps and it's still a lot cheaper. So I'm befuddled.

what pisses me off about the paid thing is that a lot of the complainers are american yet they only pay $3 while uk folk have to pay £3. Over a year that mounts up, but they dont see that.

Yeah it's so weird that Americans would go to Pandora (which is very impersonal) that has no social network aspect at all since we don't have Spotify-like alternative. I can see why non-US people will complain and switch because you guys have more to choose from.

I only get a couple of hours a day to listen to music and I'd rather decide for myself what song comes next - so I'd honestly rather punt £40 on seeing two games (or buying a couple of books, or a video game, or going to a gig) than listening to the radio. I'll be paying for spotify once I get a decent phone as I can still access my playlists and make songs available offline.

I just got a smart enough for spotify but not smart iphone and after that I think its well worth the £10, I hear that Spotify have just signed a deal with Warner bros, and thats it set for US release. This might just be a chance to get in all the last.fm subscribers and get them on a monthly charge before Spotify hits the US.
