I'm cool with Earl having his own thread. He stands apart from the rest of that crew IMO. They're all pretty talented, but something about Earl is mysterious and alluring. Maybe I only think that because he resembles a black Bonnie Prince Billy.

I just listened to the Earl album again after a few weeks off and holy shit, my on-again off-again relationship with hip hop is back on, big time. Between this and the new Ghostface, I'm feelin' all 1994 up in here. But seriously, damn, this album. Fuckin' perfect. Like 36 Chamberz perfect.

Record is boring and underwhelming. It's the Lincoln of 2013 rap albums, a prestige effort that was pedigreed into good reviews, but that even critics who bestowed it with high ratings won't feel passionate about in a year

Evan R, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

Honestly I'd rather bump Yeezus, even if this record has 3-4 cuts that could maybe rate a year end tracks list for me.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:30 (twelve years ago)

i think whether this is disappointing or not kinda depends on whether you are viewing it as a dusted weird underground rap record or an "event" album like watch the throne or good kid, m.a.a.d. city....

the spin review was otm in saying that earl's profile in the press has kinda meant this album has expectations that it wasn't created to meet

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 23 August 2013 03:13 (twelve years ago)

was looking forward to this, but am also finding it a bit boring - lacking the puerile guignol and malignant mischeif of the first album (or the turns on Radical, Blackenedwhite and Earmilk). Earl's voice is still captivating, just find his manner more limited than before. Hmm, listening now and not sure that's fair, maybe it's the music - will give it more goes - still find that early OFWGKTA stuff fascinating and it's great to have a new Earl LP.

Just one thing, and he's in no way alone in this - wish he wouldn't do that thing having a go at 'the critics'. Go the MES route and NAME them - yr enemies - otherwise it's meaningless and also slightly laughable for someone so generally critically praised.

Fizzles, Friday, 23 August 2013 06:13 (twelve years ago)

OTM. This ruins, for me, what should have been the best track on the album.

Also, second half > first half, "Chum" and "Burgundy" aside.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Friday, 23 August 2013 18:13 (twelve years ago)

there's also this way that RZA has of almost pronouncing words like "freckles" like "fweckles" but he doesn't quite do it and it's this weird imaginary letter that's between "R" and "W" that only RZA knows and it sounds like shit to me

Yeah, it's really good, starting to think that Tyler's output might be the weakest of the gang.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 30 August 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)

^regardless of what you think of OFWGKTA, I think that, a couple of clear exceptions aside, is clearly the case. To what extent does his (to me fairly moribund) musical influence permeate the others' stuff?

Fizzles, Friday, 30 August 2013 18:06 (twelve years ago)

In terms of who influences who, have no idea how OFWGKTA works, but I came to enjoy Tyler way more when he is on other people's tracks. The thing is that he doesn't seem to care that much about making music like Earl, Frank Ocean and perhaps to a lesser extent, Domo Genesis. I feel Tyler's album are there to be there, because to do what he is doing he needs to releases album. That being said, I would have been way more excited about Odd Future if it wasn't for Tyler's antics, but I can totally see how people would feel the exact opposite. It's hard to tell really.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 30 August 2013 18:34 (twelve years ago)

Tyler seems to enjoy that act of entertaining way more than Earl and Frank do. He's not always successful at it, but I usually appreciate the effort.

Evan R, Friday, 30 August 2013 18:36 (twelve years ago)

The thing is that he doesn't seem to care that much about making music like Earl, Frank Ocean and perhaps to a lesser extent, Domo Genesis

doesn't he produce waaaay more of his own tracks than they do? i get the sense that he cares more about that side of it than rapping.

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 30 August 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)

i thought earl produced his whole new record himself?

everything I do is funky like Debussy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 30 August 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)

Actually, what Earl did on this album that I really enjoy is to keep things short. Songs like 20 Wave Caps and Sunday don't need to be longer than 2:12 and 3:26, it's really good editing. Tyler's songs just go on and on and on and there is so many of them and it's tiring.

xpost, oh I wasn't aware of that, but perhaps it explains why his output feels lukewarm compared to his big potential?

Van Horn Street, Friday, 30 August 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

i thought earl produced his whole new record himself?

haha what?

scott seward, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 03:16 (ten years ago)

witch house! i didn't know they had that around anymore. awesome song & video too. in the middle of watching a girl walks home alone at night, and it fits right in. also someone has seen under the skin. spooky styley.

this feels personal and bummed out

sounds like it:

Time damaging my ties
Who turn to get up? Get dude turned to dinner quick
You circus niggas, you turning into tricks
I was making waves, you was surfing in 'em

Dealing with the stomach pains just from birthing niggas' shit
Cut the grass off the surface
Pray the lawnmower blade catch the back of a serpent, nigga, shit
Bitch

tyler does some audible backing vocals on one song ("off top") and left brain produced one song but even the rest of the beats are all earl

i think he's clearly outgrown them (thank fucking god)

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 April 2015 00:47 (ten years ago)

because right now he might be my third favorite rapper after chance and kendrick

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 April 2015 00:48 (ten years ago)

I saw him about a month ago and he was pretty bad. Couldn't sustain any energy for more than a song or two, couldn't get the crowd going, didn't even really have a grasp of the basics of putting on a rap show (his DJ fucked up song cues a lot, too). Shockingly amatuerish, all around.

Evan R, Thursday, 30 April 2015 13:48 (ten years ago)

Didn't help that it was one of the youngest, most inhibited crowds I've ever seen at a rap show. Lots of gangly high school kids who worship this guy but expressed their reverence with silence.

Evan R, Thursday, 30 April 2015 13:50 (ten years ago)

sounds like an indie audience, ew

Couldn't sustain any energy for more than a song or two

found this to be true of the album tbh. dirge after dirge after dirge, a real chore to get through

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 April 2015 14:07 (ten years ago)

i'm sure the lyrics are ~really deep thoughts but he doesn't make them sound captivating at all

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 April 2015 14:08 (ten years ago)

the whole album is a dirge but it's potent rather than enervated. so oppressive it's tactile, blotting out the space

ogmor, Thursday, 30 April 2015 14:37 (ten years ago)

I liked that last album til Things Happened and I lost my entire saved stuff, but I was playing some loosie playlist this morn and ohoho, this stood out, my mother busted in my house midway through and we drunk coffee and ate angel cake, but I noted this one (out of the 3 I heard that day) as the one to come back to, and yeah it's awesome, maybe not if you're into Earl for the rhymes but, that loop was in my skull all afternoon, drinking coffee with my maw and trying to stay genteel.

well sht I might have to get this. I'm always irked by albums with no track > 3 mins. But usually those are like 70+mins long tho anyway!

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 6 December 2018 16:46 (six years ago)

The singles didn't grab me on first listen, but they sound better/make more sense in the context of the album as a whole. It's not really an album of "singles."
