ah no (sah) that tok is on the swag team riddim, which it appears i havent given the sufficient time of day since discovering it was unrelated to busy's own 'swag team' song

'no sah' is pretty good actually! tok invariably disappoint these days but doing their best cypress hill impression suited them magnificently and totally unexpectedly on 'heroin needle'

moreso with that song i must admit a sense of peace washed over me at finally being able to mention a worthwhile song involving SLEEPY HALLOWTIPS whose amazing name i have delighted in since like 2008

if you'd like to talk about the actual wildlife riddim however then all i will say it is FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!! i agonized for ages over which version was the best but finally decided that really this is that one riddim where the whole thing must be listened to in sequence to fully appreciate its glory. i'm listening to the album now, it's really... boring, in an unexpected sort of way. kinda funny actually that i should scold busy for his outre graspings and then be met by this thing so turgid in its efforts at relative verisimilitude.

although it's not quite entirely that, i guess it's got its own little lachrymose synthy thing going. (but not one so far dissimilar to what you'd normally find either).

on first listen there's nothing here remotely as good as last year's semi-popular ode to miffy, 'yuh love'.

I think I was mostly just surprised at how restrained the cover is in light of both other bizarre Kartel covers (though taking a look at them, I may have been thinking only of JMT; the others aren't that strange) as well as his campaign to present himself in as aesthetically shocking a manner as possible with the tattoos, bleaching, and extensions. Actually you addressed some of that rather well talking about "Colouring book" in another thread. I wasn't expecting to see that cover and think "VK looks pretty good."

I listened to a few tracks off the album and also found it pretty unengaging. Some weird/sad/lol lyrics like "if you want something old, watch Nick at Nite" and "dem a cartoon/ Beavis Butthead" both on "Freestyle".

It does mystify me that his last two official albums have both peddled this sound so determinedly, and self-conscious positioning seems like the most logical explanation.

i mean busy's not completely cut off - he will use current events in clever rapper metaphors or whatever, or as an aside ("hunt di pussy dem like a kd knight" on wildlife riddim) - but he works peripherally, not face on like vybz. i'm not 100% au fait with the ja charts but i think he's well respected moreso than being seen as a hitmaker.

chino's album is full of genre dabblings and positive pop reggae conscious jams (black eyed peas, wyclef were mentioned in the allmusic review, though perhaps a little too broadly) and as such will always be too herby to win many hipster kisses. i do often come back to it though for its sunny undemanding vibes and generally v high quality craftsmanship; it's exactly the album it set out to be, and its self assurance is perpetually charming. if 'hustler' were on it it wouldnt have struck me as a particularly outstanding highlight.

I meant to follow up on the Ward 21 talk upthread--have they done anything this year that tops Make Up Sex? I was listening to the 2003 RRR the other day, and their "Petrol" is a highlight. In the absence of rtc's wished-for comp, would any of you take a stab at a POX?
