Someone played me some heavy dubplate type stuff by someone called king earthquake. Been trying to get more stuff that sounds like it but coming up straws. Don't really know anything about new dub/soundsystem (not dubstep) but would like to

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

which is to say, cecile is a nice lady with some nice songs but she sure do have a weird disproportionate cult around her and a lot of the time it is pretty unfair to her peers

if any of you really believe hers is the best version on any of those riddims then i call bullshit on your souls

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

i mean you guys act like she's chico or something

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

kinda odd to see this is ur 1st post in this thread, r|t|c (then again, maybe not). any recomendations?

'tump', 'jump inna d benz', 'swag team' and 'heroin needle' from your 2011 traxx list are great, obv.

rusty_allen, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

"pree mi" is the best versh of the blaze fia riddim i've heard! out of uh two but i'm not a completist about checking for every version out

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

i don't really see any particular cult around her more than any other dancehall artist who's managed to build a high enough profile and stuck around to maintain it (would say dilettantes would check more for lady saw, busy signal etc these days?)

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

...not a big fan of cecile, btw. maybe i gave that impression, dunno. i liked 'pree mi' but that doesn't mean i'd prefer it over other versions of 'blaze fia' (only riddim i listened, tbh). 'bedroom war', 'talk 2 mi uh' or 'do what i said'.

rusty_allen, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

busy yes, la saw.... ennhh if it's even there it's different, based more on her throwback reputation i'd say. if patra wasnt in the slammer and still recorded she'd probably be getting the same, whatever she put out.

(i must stress there's nothing wrong with liking any of cecile's stuff, just...)

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

busy spends the majority of his time courting dilettantes as well so even that's not quite the cecile thing as i see it

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

i mean aren't we all kinda guilty of it to an extent - i'm not gonna auto-cosign anything ce'cile puts out and nor am i just gonna limit myself to her, but she does go to the top of the pile when it comes to checking stuff out, because yeah i've loved her style and her persona over the years

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

I suppose I am guilty of being disproportionally into ce'cile, but I don't feel that bad about it. What do you all think of this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AYhQoy3YXU

rob, Monday, 16 May 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

rtc, from your 2011 tracks list, "tok ft sleepy hallowtips - heroin needle" is IMMENSE. also liking TOK's "No Sah" on the Wildlife riddim.

rob, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

ah no (sah) that tok is on the swag team riddim, which it appears i havent given the sufficient time of day since discovering it was unrelated to busy's own 'swag team' song

'no sah' is pretty good actually! tok invariably disappoint these days but doing their best cypress hill impression suited them magnificently and totally unexpectedly on 'heroin needle'

moreso with that song i must admit a sense of peace washed over me at finally being able to mention a worthwhile song involving SLEEPY HALLOWTIPS whose amazing name i have delighted in since like 2008

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

back when i imagine he thought that pun would live everlastingly

if you'd like to talk about the actual wildlife riddim however then all i will say it is FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!! i agonized for ages over which version was the best but finally decided that really this is that one riddim where the whole thing must be listened to in sequence to fully appreciate its glory. (also: it's the assassin cut.)

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

as u can see you'll always get more out of me appealing to my bloodsportiveness than my sense of pedagoguery

bring it

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

of course you're right about my Wildlife confusion--I got various youtubes scrambled. Assassin's "Badda" would also be my pick out of the few I tried, though Mavado's AK47 was good too (though now I'm listening to the Elephant Man, which is also ace, as was the Bramma...er).

back when i imagine he thought that pun would live everlastingly

lol, I don't think I even registered that as a pun until you said that--it's kind of beautiful.

rob, Monday, 16 May 2011 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

yeah you could even well argue mavado's is the least impressive, until the riddim ends and it of course turns out there's only one man's hook you're still singing.

busy fantastically nimble once again - possibly my level favourite alongside assassin's pure mayhem just for the way he captures the riddim's gypsyish leaning. what more is there left to say about di genius? just remarkable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD51xtOM0bM

also did you catch this one as well? deliciously ridiculous side salad to 'badda'.

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

haha, that intro is marvelous. you have to wonder is it really wise to bombastically sing "they cyaan murder me" like that? the gods are likely to hear something as over the top as that. Going to have to wait until I get home from work to really appreciate this riddim.

dunno who motion even is but he def best captured the riddim's slightly exhausted libidinous exotica imo

r|t|c, Friday, 17 June 2011 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

or randy in normal terms. randy would have been fine

r|t|c, Friday, 17 June 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

that's a real anachronous 03-05 style riddim though, like the only things i can think of in that vein for the last while are equinoxx's jim screechie riddim and probably yeah chino's 'i am'

r|t|c, Friday, 17 June 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

that Motion track is much, much more credible than the versions I heard. agreed on the out-of-time quality; I think this is Skatta who did the Coolie Dance riddim. I don't know him that well, but does he specialize in these kinds of "ethnic" riddims? my knowledge of Jewish music is nonexistent, but bar mitzvah is just Hava Nagila right?

rob, Friday, 17 June 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

i couldn't really tell you regarding either off the top of my head, certainly the dim impression was that everyone was at it sampling willy-nilly back then but whether scatta's m.o did it in particular i forget

perhaps finney might recall

r|t|c, Friday, 17 June 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

cursory google suggests that no, scatta does all sorts

r|t|c, Friday, 17 June 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Is this don scatta Burrell? On my phone so can't google cross check. Yeah from
memory pretty diverse, kind of like a less slick more honest vendetta from memory.

Tim F, Friday, 17 June 2011 23:59 (fourteen years ago)

It is Burrell. This Jamaica Star article makes an explicit link with Coolie Dance:

"I made it the first week in January. I got the concept from my London-based publisher, Othman Mukhlis. "the best thing is to find two genres of music and merge them," he said, noting that Mukhlis worked with him for the Indian-based 'Coolie Dance' rhythm which had major success overseas.

He explained that he always heard the term 'Bar Mitzvah' in movies but became curious and researched what it was. It was after getting an understanding of it that he decided to make a rhythm of this nature.

rob, Saturday, 18 June 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

my knowledge of Jewish music is nonexistent, but bar mitzvah is just Hava Nagila right?

hey rob did that classyness of that vybz cover surprise you from a generaist jamaican pov or a "mixpak records" one?

i'm listening to the album now, it's really... boring, in an unexpected sort of way. kinda funny actually that i should scold busy for his outre graspings and then be met by this thing so turgid in its efforts at relative verisimilitude.

r|t|c, Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:58 (fourteen years ago)

although it's not quite entirely that, i guess it's got its own little lachrymose synthy thing going. (but not one so far dissimilar to what you'd normally find either).

on first listen there's nothing here remotely as good as last year's semi-popular ode to miffy, 'yuh love'.

r|t|c, Thursday, 23 June 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

I think I was mostly just surprised at how restrained the cover is in light of both other bizarre Kartel covers (though taking a look at them, I may have been thinking only of JMT; the others aren't that strange) as well as his campaign to present himself in as aesthetically shocking a manner as possible with the tattoos, bleaching, and extensions. Actually you addressed some of that rather well talking about "Colouring book" in another thread. I wasn't expecting to see that cover and think "VK looks pretty good."

I listened to a few tracks off the album and also found it pretty unengaging. Some weird/sad/lol lyrics like "if you want something old, watch Nick at Nite" and "dem a cartoon/ Beavis Butthead" both on "Freestyle".

rob, Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

i think i mean straight-up club joints

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:20 (fourteen years ago)

Okay yeah - I think I'd still say dancehall is um more club joint friendly than it was but I guess what also distinguishes 2011 somewhat to my mind is a certain wired idiosyncrasy (or even more than usual) that maybe mitigates against tunes being sufficiently streamlined to be crossover club hits.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 23 July 2011 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

It's kinda sad to listen to IMO.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 July 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

Love that! I like everything I've heard from Keida, actually... her tune on the Dancehall EFX riddim was one of my favorite versions.

Really feeling the Island Breeze riddim right now:

yeah, i read your review of it & i realized that your take was OTM except for that fact that this sort of cold autotune dancehall crooning is something i really dig

also i have basically no investment in his overall career, so idk

xp

J0rdan S., Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

and this tune is HUGE right now:

Tim F, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i read your review of it & i realized that your take was OTM except for that fact that this sort of cold autotune dancehall crooning is something i really dig

I think the idea of it is great, it's over an album I start to find it oppressive. "Breathless" and "Yuh Love" are classic though.

Tim F, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:04 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i feel you

vybz lookin hella GQ on the cover is a good look tho

J0rdan S., Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:15 (fourteen years ago)

ooh hadnt seen that review

insofar as nothing on there matching 'coloring book' (and i hadnt realised a solution was as simple as this when i talked on the album upthread) a compilation featuring that and his other recent singles with notnice wouldve been massively superior. like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiF_HeQLuo0

plus the cuts on s-class, yang & eternal riddims. further back i'm less certain how they go

r|t|c, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

he saw you coming a mile off btw tim :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBYXHqXK1Ws

r|t|c, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

Haha. Was definitely a situation where I had to mentally insert "far be it from me to tell Vybz..."

But see if there were tracks like the above on the album to balance out the moaning it'd be much more fun!

It seems too easy to make comparisons to Busy but Busy is pretty conscientious about balancing out those impulses.

J0rdan did you hear Toi's "You'll Be Mine"? Strong Cassie/Adiah vibes on that one.

Tim F, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah exactly xpost here's what i was typing

his regular status as Jamaica's number-one DJ also making him more vulnerable to demands that he represent the community rather than just its gun-wielding, girl-grabbing, ganja-imbibing contingent.

like, careful now. would you really privilege busy signal's denuded showbiz so far over vybz' grassroots dialectic? in truth the review makes it seem as if this was the only sound he was pushing and 'clarks', 'straight jeans and fitted', 'cake soap' etc etc never existed; the guy's had a stellar couple of years.

r|t|c, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

can you guys calm down listing the ladyjams btw, i was working on a thing :/

so inconsiderate

r|t|c, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

Word count issues - first draft had a shortlist of great jams from the past few years but I had to cut a lot of the non album chat. It does mystify me that his last two official albums have both peddled this sound so determinedly, and self-conscious positioning seems like the most logical explanation.

Possibly contradicted by the fact that in other ways no one seems to care about their public rep less than vybz.

Tim F, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

Also how "grassroots" is the dialectic? Genuine question not disagreement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOMngSdnYNQ

the only summer themed tune i'm fucking with right now tbrr

chuck a quid in lex's memento mori pop jar on your way out

r|t|c, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:52 (fourteen years ago)

xp well in comparison to busy it's very grassroots, he makes no international moves and is fully concentrated on being the only show in town. controversy, books, politics, whatever he can get his hands on, and the songs are a continual narrative

i mean busy's not completely cut off - he will use current events in clever rapper metaphors or whatever, or as an aside ("hunt di pussy dem like a kd knight" on wildlife riddim) - but he works peripherally, not face on like vybz. i'm not 100% au fait with the ja charts but i think he's well respected moreso than being seen as a hitmaker.

r|t|c, Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:03 (fourteen years ago)

Okay that makes sense to me albeit on a broader context level than a sound-level.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

sure:

Dexta Daps - 8 (I like his voice, and the melody is great... one complaint is that maybe a bit too polished/pop? I like a bit more griminess riddim-wise. But this is dope)
Blak Ryno - 4 (don't like this riddim at all, though Ryno rides it well. I dunno if it's the youtube quality, but it lacks bass and it's too busy/techno-ish).

the first 10/10 instant overhead smash of a record i've heard in a little while i think... might have previously thought otherwise but this automatically just downgraded everything else by a point tbh.

esp that bit where the bubbling broiling waves part for "IT'S YOU. IT'S ALWAYS BEEN YOU." is just !!!!!!

LU: Have you gotten a degree?

Patra: I got a little thing going on. I’m studying ancient history and political science. That’s my off-time thing. I’m more interested in how the world is evolving than thinking about minor details.

LU: Ancient history, huh?

Patra: I started that a long time ago because I wanted to know who Cleopatra was, really, because of the name Patra. I was drawn to how she was. It was like wow, it looks like I was meant for this. I can’t stop watching the History Channel so I decided to look further into it, where I would start from way back.

chino's album is full of genre dabblings and positive pop reggae conscious jams (black eyed peas, wyclef were mentioned in the allmusic review, though perhaps a little too broadly) and as such will always be too herby to win many hipster kisses. i do often come back to it though for its sunny undemanding vibes and generally v high quality craftsmanship; it's exactly the album it set out to be, and its self assurance is perpetually charming. if 'hustler' were on it it wouldnt have struck me as a particularly outstanding highlight.

konshens - from 12 to 12 (12 to 12)
propa fade ft muschino - no trust (nymphomaniac)
leftside ft syon - hold me tight

these are alrite

r|t|c, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

okay, the ott guitar shredding on Never Change is still a bit of a stumbling block for me, but "undemanding sunny vibes" is a good way of putting it, and I'm quite liking the laidback Protected now

rob, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 02:14 (fourteen years ago)

actually the run from Protected - Pon Your Head - I Am is excellent, and Yeah Yeah isn't bad either, just not as great as I Am. I'm starting to think maybe you undersold this, lol @ me

this song definitely took on a new context for me in light of the allegations, but i guess you can't say nobody saw it coming

chilli, Saturday, 15 October 2011 04:44 (fourteen years ago)

loving the sunrise riddim recently:
bencil - gallis a di year

gully song has a good song on that riddim too in his usual "tortured thug at death's door" theme

Ward 21-produced new Natalie Storm (& Deewun): http://largeup.okayplayer.com/2011/10/19/largeup-world-premiere-natalie-storm-gimme-60-f-deewun/

v cool! unsurprisingly!

kinda amazing-ish thing about ward 21 these days is that even though they're possibly the most well known dancehall production auteurs (for ppl of a certain age perhaps), and receive more than their fair share of media lip service in comparison to everyone else, the true extent of their awesomeness is STILL pretty much underexamined. a proper compilation of them would have to be high up in my fantasy record label daydreams.

ward 21 would however have to wait its turn behind my mad cobra c&w album project! (he barely ever does them (or anything much these days sadly) but when he does he is truly to the prairie born.)

also ilx while you're here, do i like this cos it's legit rad or am i just slouching further into self parody? honestly, without anyone to hate on these past few days i don't even know who i am anymore.

r|t|c, Thursday, 20 October 2011 07:39 (fourteen years ago)

I did a top 5 of recent shizz while ILX was down but now I can't remember?

1 and 2 were Denyque "When We Touch" and Snakey "You" tho.

personally i found 'cake soap' especially became a lot more entertaining

r|t|c, Thursday, 20 October 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

oh i'm glad someone likes that denyque, thought i was just getting even more air for that one.

r|t|c, Thursday, 20 October 2011 07:45 (fourteen years ago)

It's okay r|t|c "Burning Up" actually is brilliant.

Tim F, Thursday, 20 October 2011 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

As is "Gimme 60" duh. Ward 21 have a real knack for making really arresting riddims out of relatively simple components.

Tim F, Thursday, 20 October 2011 12:23 (fourteen years ago)

Snakey's "You" is the second tune on this Skype Riddim mix:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntRhkP5hx10

Also worth hanging out for G Star's "Dugu Dugu" later on.

Tim F, Thursday, 20 October 2011 12:26 (fourteen years ago)

i had "secret in the closet" playing in two different windows without realising and it sounded SO FUCKING AMAZING. everything was being echoed and i was loving it. slightly disappointed now.

Curious what you all make of this Ward 21 track: http://soundcloud.com/kunley21/hello-again-ward-21

I meant to follow up on the Ward 21 talk upthread--have they done anything this year that tops Make Up Sex? I was listening to the 2003 RRR the other day, and their "Petrol" is a highlight. In the absence of rtc's wished-for comp, would any of you take a stab at a POX?

rob, Monday, 14 November 2011 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

Is there going to be a 2012 version of this thread? I know it's the dead of winter but scrolling through here over the past week or two has given me two or three of my tracks of 2011.
