the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

listening to the girl unit song now. never heard it. pretty cool. vocals remind me of t.a.t.u.!

i don't like that ariel pink song at all. blah. that song by the books should be in the ariel pink spot.

scott seward, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

saw ariel pink on jimmy fallon and it made me cringe so hard. some people should stay in the studio. or the bedroom. or wherever he makes music.

scott seward, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

AG: Given the results my biggest regret is not voting for "Brothers (for Matt)" and getting it into the top 77, but it's not distinct enough from the album in my mind. If "Brain Strom (for Erin)" had been nommed I would have voted for it.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

love this girl unit youtube comment:

This is that kinda song I'm listening to at 2 in the morning pulling into a Taco Bell, and you KNOW I'm gonna be hungry

scott seward, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

Haven't saved my ballot, but my number one, Perfume, watch it, got three votes and ended up at #157. Had hoped for a few more votes and a top 100 ranking. With a bit more exposure I think it could have... but what can you do? Asian pop not quite there yet. Second highest song with 3 votes, though.

What's the 'diversity' score thing and why is it one out of only two with 1.00 ?

did anyone else order their ballots backwards because of this:

"An ordered albums/tracks ballot will count the points down from 50, 48, 46...6, 4, 2."

because i think my vote might have made a difference had i been wise enough to realize i had it wrong.

Captain Ahab, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:16 (fourteen years ago)

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

bort, I just sent your ballot.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

Just posted this explanation of the stats in the other thread:

Enthusiasm = (points total)/(#votes) - 26

So if it's negative then that track's voters were less enthusiastic than average (tended to put in in the lower half of their ballot)

Diversity = (number of unique tracks on all ballots for that track)/(number of tracks on all ballots for that track)

In general, diversity will go down as the number of votes goes up as there's more chance of overlap. But if a track is less diverse than its neighbours (e.g. Rick Ross) then its voters had more homogeneous ballots.

Once the albums poll is finished I'll roll out fun voter stats.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

i was one! (i think)

just sayin, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

Underlined if I was the only voter (there are, surprisingly, only two of these, and they're both British and proggy, haha). BTW, those who gave 1, 2 and 3 respectively to Blackjazz Deathtrance, Weather Report 2 and The Body Is True, u fam. Other two Dominique Leone voters are fam as well. And someone gave that Titus Andronicus song I nominated their #1! :D

Working For A Nuclear Free City - Do A Stunt
The Fall - Weather Report 2
Dominique Leone - 40/60
Shining - Blackjazz Deathtrance
Extra Life - The Body Is True

These New Puritans - We Want War
Third Eye Foundation - Closure
Justin Bieber - U Smile (ambient version)
Kayo Dot - Stained Glass
Brendan Perry - Utopia
Oceansize - Part Cardiac

The Knife - Colouring Of Pigeons
Swans - No Words/No Thoughts

The Fall - Bury Pts. 1 + 3
Marina & The Diamonds - Shampain
School Of Seven Bells - Heart Is Strange
The Chap - We Work In Bars
Pantha du Prince - Stick to My Side (ft. Noah Lennox)

btw Pfunkboy I listened to that Nachmystium before voting and I felt it veered a bit too far towards Pink Floyd-ish soft-metal (a blacker Porcupine Tree, lol) for my tastes (and I can dig that sorta shit, but more when it's done fully committing to the swoon and battered beauty that, say, Anathema evince). nice synths and it kicks a bit of ass but not quite there for me, soz - caught a bit between stalls

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

i was the only funk butcher voter? all the uk funky heads could get "it's what you do" into the 77 but couldn't vote for "pull me close"? smh

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

so seandalai, if I just sent a 15-song ballot then 1st song woulda been 50, 2nd = 48...

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i guess i like "pull me close" better because it's dutty rather than pretty like "it's what you do"

LJ - never heard that song before but liked it more than anything that made the top 10.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

'pull me close' is really good but for some reason I didn't have an mp3 of it so could only listen to it when I remembered to punch it into utube so didn't really 'live' with the track. But you're right, totally deserved to make it top 77.

as someone who gave an Ulrich Schnauss his #1 track of the DECADE, I see exactly what sort of itch this scratches :)

I tried to be somewhat strategic with my ballot, so my personal top 20 of the year would be quite different. I either booted or lowered a bunch of favorites I figured had no chance of placing. Would have voted for the Fives and Tinie Tempah. Can't believe I overlooked the Fives! That's what I get for relying on my bookmarks more than Site New Answers.

Looking at the noms list again, I still have a bunch of stuff I'd like to investigate. 2010 was insane.

Thanks J0rdan and Johnny!

LJ, you should check out the whole Mark McGuire album - it's superior to the Emeralds album imo. Brain Storm (for Erin) is my jam.

the kylie track is a banger imo, but not surprised it didn't show up

I probably should've voted for it; I think the only reason I didn't is because it's not my favorite on the album, but my favorite wasn't nominated, so.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, couldn't believe "All the Lovers" slipped through the nomination cracks (dunno if that was your favorite, but I would've voted for it...perhaps highly).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't even hear Emeralds! I need to be told these things! Ha. Thanks DAM, u a bro as well - glad my track is getting a few nice reviews (I figured that the post-poll ballots thread would be the stage for such songs to shine)

Liked the McGuire so much I'm listening to it again; will give the other one a shot afterwards. It and Badu's Window Seat are the absolute bankers to appear high in my ballot, of the stuff I've discovered recently.

omar little, Thursday, 27 January 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

I really like the Mark McGuire song...lots of things coming to mind:

-an awesome middle-point between Tame Impala & Rangda
-sort of extended psych-jam version of the first half of Sufjan's "Sister"
-what I wish Person Pitch sounded like

the synths part was great, like the sun reflecting off a lake on a clear summer day, and now we're back into calmer acoustic territories for the fade out...

If those were ordered, Mark Macguire would have been my #1.

Ha - now we've found at least three ways Mark McGuire could have made the top 77. He wuz robbed.

I didn't rank my tracks and it was already posted as a spoof #3 in the countdown, but this would have been my #1 if I had one:

Zinja Hlungwani - Nwa Gezani My Love

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

straight up LJ & contenderizer, next poll if we're all still around & you guys have songs that you're getting behind, then let me know. I'll at least check them out.

I checked out how it would've changed things if I had voted, and it wouldn't have been much, but I would've voted for Do a Stunt, Odessa (which I saw wz on yr ballot LJ), probably Brothers (for Matt).

& I'll let you know what I'm getting behind too...

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

I'll just take this opportunity to pimp own thing here. I've been making a series of mixes since early 2008 that are as much for my own purposes as they are for other people to hear them. A lot of what I end up nominating in previous polls (and this one) comes from these. The ones I make this year will probably end up serving the same purpose for my nominations in next year's poll.

Anyway, if anyone wants to pick up some popular and some under the radar tunes on a fairly regular basis, bookmark this: http://mondosalvo.tumblr.com/

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

Note: I consider a lot of it pop music too, but I'm typically "the anti-lex."

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

ya that sounds like a cool idea! we'll have to create a thread of blooding the musics :)

Demdike Stare was so, so, so good. Fucking yes, would have been top 10. Actually, at the end of my listening I'm going to post an alternative ballot, perhaps...

Zinja Hlungwani is VERY good - in merging African traditional sounds with electronic beats it falls within the esteemed lineage of the Burkina Electric album from last year, Paspanga, which I gave several points to in the albums poll!

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I remember checking out the Burkina Electric when you posted it, should probably go back to it again.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

i thought "dem dykes stare" was the name of a nicki minaj song or something

williamstevenjames (some dude), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:36 (fourteen years ago)

Glad you enjoyed Demdike LJ, god knows what it would sound like in a darkened room with some proper bass.

Loved the Shangaan electro album btw Sean, didn't vote for yer man Zinja here though.

seminal fuiud (NickB), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

Those look really great, J. Fever.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, this is the Burkina Electric track I reckon you'll all go particularly mad for, and what's more it has a video!

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that's a good idea. was thinking of starting a rolling "Songs You Might Vote for In the 'Best of 2011' Poll" thread, to try to corral straight up LJ & contenderizer, next poll if we're all still around & you guys have songs that you're getting behind, then let me know. I'll at least check them out.

& I'll let you know what I'm getting behind too...

i'm there. in fact, i was thinking of starting a "Rolling Songs You're Maybe Gonna Vote for In the 'Best of 2011' Tracks Poll" thread, to sort of corral people's emerging favorites in one place and allow sharing outside the single-genre rolling threads, which are hard to keep up with if you're not in deep. also was hoping to try to encourage more voting from metal & punk thread regulars, cuz those genres usually go totally ignored at year's end.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

anyway the main purpose of this post is to *boggle* at how fucking WONDERFUL this Demdike Stare is. FUCK, Contendo you need to get on this shit PRONTO as well

yeah, dude, i know! like i was saying, i nominated it, but wish i'd worked harder to get other folks to listen up before the voting cut-off. next year i will be a more dedicated cheerleader for the shit. and i'm fully on board with "we want war". took me a few listens, but i got there. gonna pick up these new puritans and swans ASAP.

If we ever get it back, Listening Room might turn out to be a great resource for swapping tracks.

whenever ppl get make those threads they get filled w/ lame youtubes in like an hour. best thing to do if you want to be influential is just have really good taste & be a firebrand & make fabulous threads for singles you're digging. i personally dig the ghettoisation of rolling punk stuff, altho there might've been some funny reactions if we had like all kamikaze #1'd the drunkdriver lp into the top 10 or something

yeah, thread getting cluttered up with whatever dross was crossing everybody's screen would be the downside. that or no one using it. but it's not so much about being influential (though i'd love to have sycophants), it's about actually hearing the cool shit in real time, rather than playing catch-up at year's end. i'm looking for a shortcut to wisdom, i guess is what it is.

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

it's so...intricate and tangled, but pristine too

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

there's great clarity and austerity in the mix, but there's also genuine madness, and the guy really digs unusual melodic patterns running up against each other

and boy does it swing too, it's like a really menacing masquerade ball

beer, beer, beer (Pillbox), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

actually lex, if you like this, you may well like the third eye foundation album 'the dark' (on spotify) - check it out! it's a little more chaotic and the mix is a little fuller, dronier etc, but I think there's shared ground

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:43 (fourteen years ago)

what's a representative track? (don't have spotify)

horror inc = alias of techno producer akufen, which is the angle i got into it from

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

ahhh ok, well this stuff is absolutely brilliant - better late than never to discover it

the dark is basically one 40-minute piece which did not stop me nominating + voting for one of its tracks, coz that one is just...heartbreakingly wondrous

I have "You Guys Kill Me" somewhere but hadn't paid any attention to Third Eye Foundation since then - "Closure" is sweet, though it doesn't seem his sound has progressed much since way back in 1998.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Friday, 28 January 2011 01:01 (fourteen years ago)

fuck, when that beat DROPS in Crepuscule

horror inc is a lot more spacious than third eye foundation, really - a lot more clarity in the mix - hence I'm not so sure Lex will dig the latter, which is a morass of chaotic and harrowing density, d'n'b and duress

still, I tried

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Friday, 28 January 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

no i like the third eye foundation track fine, though it's weirdly reminiscent of, like, an overture for a historical epic fed through a mincer and decorated with industrial clanking. idk if 40mins of it is for me tho :/

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Friday, 28 January 2011 01:17 (fourteen years ago)

well, that's the densest track - comes at the album's climax, and the others kinda build up to it - starts really minimal

but yeah, nuff. altho man I need to hear more stuff like this Horror Inc EP

I'm drunk right now. Btw I was at a bar two blocks away today and I saw the weirdest thing. Two show lesbians grinding on a random dude and taking all their clothes off. I had no idea what the hell was that about. I've been to the bar before a couple of times and never noticed there was a naked lesbian show after 3 am.

Moka, Friday, 28 January 2011 04:54 (fourteen years ago)

Sad to say there's not much too say about my recent bar experience. I wanted to hit the restrooms then realized there were two naked women grinding on a guy from the audience and felt a bit surreal. What I've said before is pretty much what happened. One of them was really hot tho, wasn't expecting them at all to get completely naked.

Moka, Friday, 28 January 2011 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

Bar name is: Club Nasti at Madrid. Definitely recommend it if you're around on a weekend. The first song playing when I entered the bar was 'teenage kicks'. That was way better than 700 naked lesbians on stage.

flopson, Friday, 28 January 2011 07:54 (fourteen years ago)

maybe - i guess i 'get' the populist impulse in the abstract but its hard to see what any discerning listener is getting out of katy perry or w/e

i mean i like some chart stuff and i like plenty of corny shit but just dng willow smith

Shameless is my middle name. :P

smanging pumpkins (The Reverend), Friday, 28 January 2011 08:32 (fourteen years ago)

'teenage dream' is p real

i cant fuck w/ voting for willow smith or 'dynamite' tho, prob similar reasons, prefer to find pop ish that should have charted but had poor promotion & was closer to my 'aesthtic' i guess

*kl0p* (deej), Friday, 28 January 2011 08:34 (fourteen years ago)

i feel like so far no one has really positioned themselves far enough away from the trax on this list to really hate on it convincingly. had high hopes for gr80 & plax but they ended up caving & admitting to liking at least a third, more like two fifths -- no one is consistent enough to hate on all the corny pop placings even tho you can tell in theory they really want to; deej likes teenage dream, gr80 likes tik tok, etc.

flopson, Friday, 28 January 2011 08:39 (fourteen years ago)

flopson, Friday, 28 January 2011 08:48 (fourteen years ago)

Here's my ballot, highlighted the ones that made it to the top 75

1. Janelle Monae - Wondaland
2. Uusi Fantasia - Liian myöhään (ft. Freeman)
3. Kymppilinja - Minä (ft. Mariska)
4. Kelis - Acapella
5. Jätkäjätkät - Pikkulintu
6. Barbara Panther - Moonlightpeople
7. Jahcoozi - Barefoot Dub
8. Fever Ray - Mercy Street
9. Janelle Monae - Cold War
10. Nicki Minaj - Roman's Revenge

11. Kid Sister - Daydreaming (Helsinki 78-82 Remix)
12. Janelle Monae - Oh, Maker
13. Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom - Track 5
14. Scissor Sisters - Night Work (the track)
15. Daft Punk - Derezzed
16. Model500 - OFI
17. Kelis - 4th of July (Fireworks)
18. Cypress Hill ft. Pitbull & Marc Anthony - Armada Latina
19. Nicki Minaj - Your Love

I knew it was kinda pointless to put those Finnish tunes at #2 and #3 and #5, but 2010 was a great year for Finnish rap and dance music, and I genuinely loved those tunes more than almost anything else last year, so I thought, why should I go for strategic voting? I'd kinda hoped at least some of you would've checked out the Uusi Fantasia track, even though it's sung in Finnish, it's a total jam!

Kinda surprised that only 3 people besides me voted for "Wondaland", to me it felt obvious right from the first listen that it was the best track on the Janelle Monae album, even though the rest of the album was quite good too.

Tuomas, Friday, 28 January 2011 08:51 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, and I'd just like to admit that when ilxor correctly predicted the top 10, it took all my might to not secret message him and give him a hi-five. That was pretty great.

I waffled on voting for it, and even though I submitted my own ballot rather early and before I'd had a chance to see what else most people were voting for, I didn't figure it would have any chance. I ended up just tossing "Cold War" a few points at the end.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 28 January 2011 08:55 (fourteen years ago)

Jahcoozi - Barefoot Dub

I really wanted to like the recent Jahcoozi stuff, but they're a totally different sounding band now than they were back in 2005/06 when I fell in love with them. It's okay, but one or two listens were about all I needed.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 28 January 2011 08:59 (fourteen years ago)

For me, a lot of the appeal of "Teenage Dream" is fairly similar to "Dynamite" and "Fuck You", where pretty much everything is a strong melodic hook that could carry its own song. And moreso than either of those, "Teenage Dream" just has these machine-like precision in both its construction, with each song section just kind of slotting directly into the previous, and production, where everything is as slick as can possibly be made without sacrificing any heft or punch. Someone somewhere pointed out the greatness of the opening line and I agree. It's just a very distinctive and specific line that draws you in immediately ("Firework" does this too, but ugh that song is terrible). I just respect the hell out of that level of fine-tuned pop songcraft. And like Deej says, the song just seems very real.

Fwiw, the appeal of "Whip My Hair" is very different. It's not so strong melodically, but it just bangs on a physical level and I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH.

Hah, it was quite the opposite for me, I loved "BLN" but in general I thought their earlier stuff was pretty generic (even if they had some clever lyrics) and didn't sound that different from the dance and electronic music of the time. Whereas on the new album they seem to have found a more unique and interesting approach that doesn't sound like they're imitating M.I.A. & co.

I don't know if I even saw it on the noms list actually. I can't even remember my poll so don't know if it would have made it or not (def. would be in my top 20 funky tunes of last year though).

Biggest surprise is the low placement of James Blake's Limit to Your Love. Peaked too soon? Or was it from last year already, secretly?

Voted "Footsteps"; was never into James Blake besides a couple of tracks and don't like "Limit" at all.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Friday, 28 January 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

I only did 15, as I took so long over my albums ballot. In order, tracks that placed bolded:

Owen Pallett - Lewis Takes Off His Shirt
veronica falls - found love (in a graveyard)
Prize Pets - New Weirdos
Dominique Leone - 40/60
Earl Sweatshirt - Earl
El Guincho - Bombay

Laetitia Sadier - By The Sea
Oneohtrix Point Never – Returnal (ft. Antony Hegarty)
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Bright Lit Blue Skies
Nicki Minaj - Roman's Revenge

demdike stare - matilda's dream
Trembling Bells & Bonnie Prince Billy - New Year's Eve's The Loneliest Night Of The Year
The Books - A Cold Freezin' Night
Games - Strawberry Skies
Mark McGuire - Brothers (for Matt)

Totally meant to vote for and am kicking myself that it slipped my mind:

Willow Smith - Whip My Hair

Had I noticed it was nominated definitely would have voted for:

Justin Bieber - U smile (ambient version)

Club Nasti

Sign of a gross club is ending a word with a letter other than the one it actually ends with (but especially an "i").

― Johnny Fever

I have a really strange hangover right now. Lol the club is not gross is actually pretty cool, it's a bar on weekdays and a concert stage on weekend. I saw Javier Mena for 9 euros last Saturday in there... although as I mentioned never noticed the sex show... maybe it was some sort of anniversary and it was a once in a year sort of thing. Nasti is actually not a willful spelling mistake on the word 'nasty'... I noticed because it was annoying me to. Turns out there's a popular saying in some weird Spain dialect that goes 'nasti de plasti' which basically means 'no way' 'not gonna happen' and that's where the name comes from. It's also a somewhat common last name.

My favourite bit of "Window Seat" is the delay effect when she sings "just beam me up.. me up... me up... me up".

Just saying.

This poll was announced VERY quickly. Didn't have time to join in the countdown. Can we do it a bit slower for the albums poll? Think of the Britishers!

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:07 (fourteen years ago)

if I made my ballot today this is what it would look like:

(Weighted)

The Fall - Weather Report 2 (The Fall battles Death & loses)
Erykah Badu - Window Seat (her most intimate self-portrait since Mama's Gun)
Earl Sweatshirt - EARL (Madvillain if DOOM really was a supervillain)
Caribou - Sun (plays a lot better once you hear the album)
Tame Impala - Alter Ego (almost trancey; this wz my album of the year)
Warpaint - Undertow (sinister Roches)
Caribou - Odessa (best video I'd seen in a looong time)
Drake - Fireworks (Deadboy slo mo edit) (finally I get dubstep)
Working for a Nuclear Free City - Do a Stunt (super breezy 3 min Prog for Dummies. Bouncy!)
Mark McGuire - Brothers (for Matt) (I liked some parts better than others, but as a whole, wholly great)
Lil B - The Age of Information (not what I expected from the source of the hoes on my dick & based god memes)
Erykah Badu - Umm Hmm (super poptastic, v representative of this album)
Jerusalem and the Starbaskets - Room 8 (200% percent better beardo indie than a gaggle of P4k bands making money)
Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (finally came around. felt like this shoulda been in some 80s teen movie)
Gorillaz - Stylo (robbed. So pissed this didn't place and the lame album is going to.)
Swans - No Thought/No Words (epic noiserock)
Katy B (ft. Ms. Dynamite) - Lights Out (I have a crush on Katy B...)
The Fives (ft. Vanya Taylor) - It's What You Do (...and Vanya too...)
Katy B - Katy on a Mission (...but I like Katy a little more)
Gil Scott Heron - Me and the Devil (totally great! Really excited about all of the Quietus stuff that made it in here!)
Wiz Khalifia - Black and Yellow (insanely catchy. As usual women know their shit.)
Lady Gaga - Alejandro (out of all the bands to bite ABBA this year, Gaga probably did it the most blatantly)
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Bright Lit Blue Skies (dug Round and Round, but have more use for this two minute garagey summer dream)
Rangda - Jar of Plains (fits v well into what I was actually listening to in 2010)
Ciara - Ride (LJ, youre right that this is dirty, but wrong for not seeing how it rides the dirtiness into epic greatness)

I was really hoping that What It's Gonna Be would be the Gucci consensus just based on comments on the gucci thread re: it's the culmination of what he's been doing for a while, etc. Then I was the only one to vote it, too much vote splitting i guess :/ Lemonade is good but doesn't show off his lyricism as much. Plus I thought it came out like 2 years ago.

iirc "Lemonade" leaked in Nov '09, appeared on a Dec '09 album, then entered the charts in Feb '10 and peaked in April, so its impact kind of straddled two different years and probably would've done better if it was all in one year

I voted this. Was actually the first time I'd (knowingly) heard Waka. I could have easily gone with half a dozen off of Mr Zone 6 which was my first experience with Gucci tbh. I'm really not up with rap but bookmarks in the new rolling gun shots thread should hopefully help fix this.

Ok, here's a first rollout of user stats, including:

Hivemind Score: the average number of points given to the tracks on your ballot (Winner: jon/via/chicago)
Fuxxor Quotient: how your tracks did in the Pitchfork Top 100 (Winner: jon/via/chicago again)
Antifuxxor Ratio: the ratio of Hivemind Score to Fuxxor Quotient, this measures the degree to which you voted for tracks that ILM loves and Pitchfork doesn't. (Winners: Jeff W, emil.y, glenn mcdonald, Lamp and a passing spacecadet, all with infinite AntiFR!)
Loneliness: the proportion of tracks on your ballot that nobody else voted for (Winner: V79)

If anyone has suggestions about other fun analytics, shout!

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 29 January 2011 01:57 (fourteen years ago)

11th least popular feels about right but surprised at the (relatively) low # of "only vote" trax

Lamp, Saturday, 29 January 2011 02:03 (fourteen years ago)

Similarity(user1,user2) = (# of tracks in common)/(# of tracks voted for by either user1 or user2)

It's basically this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaccard_index

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Saturday, 29 January 2011 02:05 (fourteen years ago)

I ignored the order of ranked ballots, partly because not all ballots are ranked.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 29 January 2011 02:13 (fourteen years ago)

wow somebody else voted for Pissed Jeans <3

sleeve, Saturday, 29 January 2011 02:15 (fourteen years ago)

Jaccard is simple and easy. The obvious weakness of it is that it doesn't take the popularity of the tracks into account, so two people who share 5 very popular tracks will seem more similar than two people who have 4 tracks for which they are the only two voters. It's also symmetric, which in the case of voters with very different vote counts isn't ideal.

My alternative is the Empath Coefficient, and for voter similarity you can go one step fancier still and use the weighted version, which works like this:

First, calculate a popularity weight for every track, by doing

1-N/T

where N is the number of voters for that track, and T is the number of total voters (in other words, the fraction of voters who didn't vote for this track)

Then do, for each pair of voters A & B that share a track (or album, or whatever):

4V(1-M/(V+1))/(A+3B)

V: sum of the popularity weights of the shared tracks
M: minimum overlap (in a set this small, try 2)
A: number of things A voted for
B: number of things B voted for

This is an asymmetric score, so you do it for each pair directionally, not once for every two connected voters.

Not that you asked, of course!

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 29 January 2011 02:27 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks for the explanation! I was going to say something about tf-idf but I see you mention that in your blog post. Obviously Jaccard and Empath are answering different questions, I went with the idea that if your ballot is 75% hivemind approved and 25% weirdo folk then your most similar voter might be someone who is 75% hivemind and 25% tru kvlt metal whereas you'd pick up the voter who is 75% weirdo folk and 25% ping pong noises. I'll add in the Empathy-based neighbours when I do the next batch of stats.

I guess my real justification for ignoring the weighting information is that if two voters have multiple lower-ranked choices they're more similar than two voters with the same #1 but everything else different. Selecting a track out of the hundreds of nominations in the first place seems a far more weighty endorsement than ranking one such pick above another.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Saturday, 29 January 2011 02:46 (fourteen years ago)

Right, I ignore the ranking on the individual ballots, too, for exactly the reason you mention. The weighting in my weighted version is, as you say, to make weirder things be more strongly indicative of similarity than popular things, because sharing two unpopular things is less likely. But note that with 113 voters, and the winning track getting just 31 votes, the weights are only going to range from .726 (for "Wut") to .938 ("Ass on the Floor") to .982 (anything with just 2 votes), so most of the time the extra-fancy math is just going to shuffle the order of some similarities that were already close.

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:07 (fourteen years ago)

Matt dc is my top neighbour, apparently

The whole album is wonderful. Although the track titles seem to be so deliberately off-putting I tend to ignore individual tunes and just wack the whole thing on, or play it on random with move of ten mixed in. D sho Qub or whatever is my fave, but not nommed.

Great poll, great work with the jpegs! Thanks guys! Though now I am OBSESSED with "Wut" and "Coma Cat".

Morley Timmons, Sunday, 30 January 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

I had never even heard of the makers of "Wut" let alone the song...on the pulse of modern music as always...

Love that Invisible Light made it into the top 20. Unsurprisingly it doesn't hold together live but they out-Frankie Frankie in both concept and execution in the last half of the track--the production is deep and complex but not confusing or overly maximalist. An amazing end to an album that is often a bit too slight for its own good.

Arcade Fire - surprised that something so Animal Collective-y made it into the top 5. "City With No Children" was my favorite track off that album.

Dance Yrself Clean - not as good as "Home" but not a bad selection.

Crystal Castles - also not aware this existed, sad.

Tightrope - very surprised this didn't rank higher--thought it might unify a few different segments of the ILM voting base. Maybe lacking a bit of punch somehow.

Rude Boy and the rest of Rihanna's big tracks this year were just sad, dour stuff.

also voted for Round & Round, Rill Rill (reluctantly) and I L U (turned out to be a productive last minute change on the 7 Bells vote). Glad to see three other people who liked Kylie's "Get Outta My Way".

skip, Monday, 31 January 2011 03:40 (fourteen years ago)

And the Fresh & Onlys' "Waterfall"! "Desire Lines" should have gotten some more love.

skip, Monday, 31 January 2011 03:43 (fourteen years ago)

unraked - bold didn't make it.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Round and Round
Beach House - Zebra
Deerhunter - Desire Lines
Far East Movement - Like a G6
(sorry)
Four Tet - Love Cry
Grum - Turn It Up
Janelle Monae - Tightrope (ft. Big Boi)
Joy Orbison - BRKLN CLLN
Ke$ha - TiK ToK
Kisses - Midnight Lover
Kylie Minogue - Get Outta My Way

Lindstrom & Christabelle - Lovesick
New Pornographers - Crash Years
Nicolas Jaar - WOUH
Ost & Kjex - Continental Lover
Robyn - Hang With Me
Sambassadeur - Days
School of Seven Bells - I L U
Scissor Sisters - Invisible Light
Shit Robot - I Got a Feeling
Sleigh Bells - Rill Rill
Stereolab - Silver Sands (Emperor Machine Mix)
Tensnake - Coma Cat
The Fresh & Onlys - Waterfall
The Radio Dept. - Heaven's on Fire

If I could have people listen to ONE track from the ones that didn't make the top 77, it would be Kisses' Midnight Lover. The rest of the album is sketchy at best but love the production on this track - hazy chillwave beat with some pep, hyper-present guitar hook on top of it, and heavily but not distractingly accented vocals. The YouTube sound quality is shitty but you can get the idea: youtube link

By the way, who else voted for Tokyo Jihen's "Zettaizetsumei"?

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 4 February 2011 04:53 (fourteen years ago)

^^ i did, i was youtubing tracks i hadn't heard on the noms list and i loved this one. d/l'd "sports" and i've been enjoying the hell out of it for a few weeks now, it's my first exposure to tokyo jihen/ringo shiina.

just wait and see what happens to her uterus (reddening), Friday, 4 February 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

Oh wow (this is Tokyo Jihen day on ILM). Sports is actually not one of their better albums, imo. I would try to check out Adult and Kyōiku too (and then Variety, though no hurry there, since it's kind of weak.) Kyōiku sounds oddly demo-ish, but the material is generally extremely good; though there are better realization to be heard, in some cases, in live performance, especially on the Dynamite Out! DVD. (You can easily find some of this on youtube.) As for solo Shiina Ringo, the first three albums are all well worth hearing: Muzai Moratorium, Shouso Strip, and Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana. The last is her ultimate masterpiece. (Yeah, saying that has become a cliche, but I think it's true. It's a very distinctive album at the very least.)

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 5 February 2011 01:00 (fourteen years ago)

(I have come around to liking some of those Sports songs more though based on the live performances on them on Ultra C--not that I've actually seen the full DVD, but there's a lot on youtube. I think maybe they should have let it cook longer, or something.)
