some dude, Monday, 31 January 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

my favorite part of this whole thing is how they try & hide his identity as if everyone was gonna be scratching their heads & running to the comments section to try & find out which xxl freshman dropped this hot new freestyle

lilwayne.quizrewards4u.com (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

i would love to see the reaction of the person that was filming this

lilwayne.quizrewards4u.com (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

was he stunned? horrified? was he trying to hold back laughter? was he cursing his job? all of the above?

lilwayne.quizrewards4u.com (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

j0rdan how would you rate Tha Otha Side Of The Trap and how justified do you feel i am in never being able to let deej hear the end of him giving an OJ Da Juiceman album a 7 out of 10

some dude, Monday, 31 January 2011 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

this is also just "basketball player"

what he means and what he says is totally different

Jacka Laroo and Tyler Too (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:29 (fourteen years ago)

ha, probably in the 5-6 range -- i wrote a post about one of the first juiceman albums on the shrimp tho, so my hands aren't exactly clean

lilwayne.quizrewards4u.com (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

lilwayne.quizrewards4u.com (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

juice's verse on "walkin on ice" & the first verse of "make da trap say aye" are classics tho

lilwayne.quizrewards4u.com (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

man his ayes sound so much like chappelle's prince

lilwayne.quizrewards4u.com (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

not for this verse, per se

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

hes not a great rapper or something but thats a good album & im just gonna point out once again that if he wasnt used as a foil to defend gucci then ppl wouldnt hate on him nearly as much as they do. its not like there arent selected styles p verses that are as lazy as this

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

&, :trolls al: freeway has had as many boring verses in the past year

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

dude, show me a single freeway verse as boring as "aw man, cuz, man, we in your face"

Jacka Laroo and Tyler Too (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

it's not really face though

it's fay

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

lol

originoo gun kl0pper (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

1st youre conflating 'boring' w/ 'lazy' -- obv freeway works harder & is a much better rapper, but boring is boring -- 2nd, 1/3rd of the tracks on 'month of madness' are lyrical rehashes of themselves (an lp i also reviewed & gave a higher score to)

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

keep in mind too that i gave 'chemical warfare' by alchemist a 7.8 ... p much all my reviews fall in the 7.0-7.9 range & theres obv rap score deflation on a site that puts indie at the center, so im typically fighting for higher scores for stuff but i guarantee there are 30 worse indie records from the past year that got a higher score than oj

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

stay
fay
aye

it's technically sound.

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

deej i have no regrets over juiceman! i still check for his new shit

lilwayne.quizrewards4u.com (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

otha side of the trap is not a 5-6 record imo

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

i can't watch this without laughing

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

man looking at that review now, its even framed in a pretty cynical way about juiceman's career ... al is really reaching here, congrats on finding yet another artist you can dismiss immediately based on some gut-level issue w/ the sound of his voice (see: the max b thread among others) that basically makes discussion impossible tho

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

it is ok for a white guy to write "cuh" on the internet? i've seen a lot of brick squad discussion that involves "cuh"

Jacka Laroo and Tyler Too (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

part of whiney's problem may be that he considers any & all discussion about an artist to be 'beef' & any time someone disagrees w/ him its a successful 'troll' on his part

or maybe its my problem for assuming that anything he says is honest or that he bothers listening to music rather than coming up w/ writing gimmicks

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

like, dude, are we disagreeing about whether a particular artist is worthwhile, or are u just playing constant games that no one is entertained by but yourself?

taking side: people using OJ as a foil to defend Gucci vs. you overrating OJ's album because he was the one out of the crew that had a new album out you could review when you started your Gucci champion phase

it seemed to me you were questioning why i would review his album? i listened to it & gave it a score based on how good i thought it was? what does that have to do w/ gucci being in jail? he released a solid if unexceptional rap record, he was a buzzed artist & i reviewed it with a cynical eye

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

& i reviewed it with a cynical aye

Jacka Laroo and Tyler Too (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

i mean the entire introductory conceit of the review is that it was sorta obvi that as soon as gucci went to jail they started pushing OJ and yet i found the oj album to be of some quality. how am i 'overrating' his album because gucci went to jail?

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

i mean, other than you being a troll / mindreader, what are you basing that on?

*kl0p* (deej), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i'm not gonna tell you you don't like what you like, there's no point in that. it just felt very calculated from my POV to push him with a relatively high score for a hood type rap record on PF. anyway find some shitty Styles verses.

btw when have i actually given you shit for liking gucci mane. never said he wasn't good or his music wasn't worth listening to. the idea that making your whole world and online persona revolve around one artist in the name of 'enthusiasm' is just kinda bullshit to me, aggressive monomania is not a charming personality trait or a something that makes a critic credible or convincing in their opinions.

how does this describe me at all? the two posts (that i wish some more ppl would respond to frankly) ive made in the last day are about the lost boyz & max b. ive posted about more bay area rap & a wider variety of rappers than ive seen you post about all year.

i wrote a lot about gucci mane & was one of the first ppl to do it but i never asked to be the 'gucci expert' or to be singularly associated with him.

honest to god if you posted an actual opinion about music that wasnt actually an opinion on your house of mirrors conceptions of popular culture & who likes what & when i would love to fucking see it, just for a change of pace. your inability to conceive any kind of aesthetic worldview makes your contributions to music 'discussions' wholly worthless

WORKING SIX CELL PHONES, NINE IN THE MORNING

dirty deathdrone boys (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 2 July 2011 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

In the past week or so, four songs have leaked with incredible OJ verses, and it really seems to me like he’s stepped his game up from even just last year. He sounds remarkably confident to me right now, like this little buzz he caught from Gucci and probably even Soulja Boy has really emboldened and solidified his style. He just seems like he belongs right now, and even when he’s on a song with Fabolous and Juelz he doesn’t seem out of place— in fact, guys like that seem lost in OJ’s dust to me. And that’s not to prop up OJ as more than he is, but I think he’s gotten to the point where his style isn’t a substitute for his rapping. Instead it’s a totally unique and singular flow used by someone who is also a great rapper and who just so happens to be blowing everyone else on tracks out of the water.

OJ wasnt prepared to be a rap star, that much is obvious. but fronting like hes just straight garbage is wrong.

they shouldnt have brought him to ny & had him doing songs w/ swizz, he jumped out of his own lane & it was a mistake. Maybe he didnt have the focus to make rap work as a career. but he had a unique style & charisma that many rappers ppl talk up on here dont

the deej/whiney/al bitchfest in the middle of this thread is one of the most entertaining and vicious exchanges i've ever read on ilm

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 October 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, good times

obviously the main thing about the line is that it's the closest thing to an actual couplet in the whole little 'freestyle' and wouldn't be that noteworthy dropped in the middle of 16 bars. but i think deej is underestimating how it works (or fails to work, i should say) on several levels. like, usually rappers allude to basketball players having a lot of rings as in championship rings, but he's like a freshman basketball player (presumably college ball, since it's 'freshman' and not 'rookie') who hasn't played in any championships yet?

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Saturday, 29 October 2011 21:25 (thirteen years ago)

ten rings on like a basketball player
freshman of the year like a basketball (,) player

isn't as bad/confounding as

nine piece, straight 8 balls
mjg, bitch i got 8 balls

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 October 2011 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

oj doesn't know better, but ross just delights in bending over and taking a shit on people like you who call him a great rapper

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Saturday, 29 October 2011 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

either in one of those lines he's saying that he has eight testicles, or he just makes two references to eight balls of cocaine, or i have no idea what he's talking about

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 October 2011 21:32 (thirteen years ago)

like, looking through his singles on Wikipedia the only ones that are questionable are:

"Here I Am"
(featuring Nelly and Avery Storm)

"Maybach Music 2"
(featuring Kanye West, T-Pain and Lil Wayne)

"9 Piece"
(featuring Lil Wayne)

c'mon dog nobody fucked with "speedin'"...i had to look at ross's wiki page to remember that song even existed just now, i was like "i know SOMETHING flopped before 'the boss' but i can't remember what'

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Saturday, 29 October 2011 23:53 (thirteen years ago)

ross is winning right now though, hes on how many charting singles?

spreading this out over 4 years in this environment, of course hes got some flops, what major label artist doesnt

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Saturday, 29 October 2011 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

"here i am" was a pretty genuine hit, the response to it didn't seem as perfunctory and indifferent as to "push it" or "super high" (xpost)

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Saturday, 29 October 2011 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

and 9ball is actually a minor hit right? i mean, i think its wack/confusing, but its the only one i dont really like and it is successful

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Saturday, 29 October 2011 23:56 (thirteen years ago)

'super high' is awesome

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Saturday, 29 October 2011 23:56 (thirteen years ago)

obviously ross is huge right now (no pun intended) and is on a lot of records, but i brought up this convo in direct response to j0rdan acting like "9 piece" (which is a very, very minor hit) being a dud single was some kind of shock in the context of his career

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Saturday, 29 October 2011 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

i mean people treat ross like he's at the level of t.i. in his prime but at the point tip had been that big for this long he had like an hour's worth of bangers everyone can fuck with, ross has like 3 enduring songs and a bunch of guest verses on hits where he's never the best thing about the song

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:02 (thirteen years ago)

i think people treat Ross as more of a Diddy than a TIP

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

or really, a mixture of the two

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:06 (thirteen years ago)

Ross certainly has more than 3 enduring songs

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:06 (thirteen years ago)

tip's maybe not the strongest possible analogy but i have no idea where diddy comes into this

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I don't get the diddy thing at all

Ross has lots of enduring songs, most of which weren't singles but most of his singles are great! Honestly, his catalog is more consistent than TI's imo but I was never a huge TI fan tbh

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

ok so there's hustlin', bmf, the boss, maaaaybe here i am and aston martin music? you might like other songs but his catalog is not bustling with undeniable unforgettable classics is all i'm saying.

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:09 (thirteen years ago)

i mean you might love "super high" but nobody remembers that song and it came out LAST YEAR

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:10 (thirteen years ago)

by Diddy I'm talking about late 90s diddy -- he's executing large numbers of hits that dont have a distinctive 'sound', they're just big, larger than life, theatrical pop tracks with huge expensive videos etc. i mean, i think the diddy comparison is obvious

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

"I'm a Boss" is a Ross track as much as it is a Meek Mill one. that was like the anthem this summer

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:12 (thirteen years ago)

whats the 'mmmmaybe' on aston martin music? i still hear that on the radio

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:12 (thirteen years ago)

Ross is definitely as much a producer (in the widest, diddiest sense) as much as he is a rapper. t.i. is definitely more rapper than anything else. I like T.I.'s catalog more but he's a better rapper & more of an album artist, Ross is all about the art of the top 40 single

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:14 (thirteen years ago)

dude Ross has made two Top 40 singles in his entire career

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:15 (thirteen years ago)

I don't agree with that though, Ross' albums are all good front-to-back. I definitely see him as an album artist, Deeper Than rap is as complete an album as any T.I. album

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:15 (thirteen years ago)

eh, hes not a rapper like T.I. is though, T.I. has people invested in who he is, in a multi-dimensional sense; there are lots of great songs on his albums that couldn't be singles & are just straight raw rapping. I feel like if a Ross song doesn't seem like a good pop song, like the kind of thing that might have a shot at charting, it tends to also just be bad overall

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:18 (thirteen years ago)

'charting' is probably misleading -- i mean, Ross is at his best at a meeting point between rap & pop, whereas T.I. doesn't lean as heavily on the aesthetics of pop -- whether or not it charts for Ross is kind of irrelevant since i'm talking about creative success in this particular instance

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

Kind of having trouble buying that when T.I. is the dude who makes songs like "Whatever You Like"

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:20 (thirteen years ago)

like 'ASAP' by T.I., or 'be better than me,' neither of those are the kinds of singles that get big expensive videos or have the biggest R&B singers on them, or aspire to be widescreen theatrical pop music. Ross, though, is totally in this lane

xp yeah but "whatever you like" is a weak song relative to "asap"

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:21 (thirteen years ago)

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

But Ross has songs like "Valley Of Death," "Tears Of Joy," and "We Shinin'" that definitely aren't "singles" but are just good album-track pure rap songs...

i'm sad that i napped thru this whole discussion

ross' softbatch singles are generally pretty worthless -- deej's repping for "super high" is bizarre unless you're counting the remix which is actually a minor classic, "speedin" and "magnificent" are just total nonentities... altho "here i am" is one of his best singles. idk, i think shipley is def underrating him... if anything last year showcased that billboard numbers aren't matching up w/ how the 'community' feels it's that BMF wasn't even big on the charts but is going to be one of the landmark rap singles of this decade. i think the thing w/ ross is that very rarely does he put out an awful single... everyone prob fucks w/ a good number of his singles, the other ones are bland enough that no one really remembers them.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:50 (thirteen years ago)

i think the charts reflected "BMF"'s popularity pretty well, it was his 2nd biggest single on the R&B chart to date, didn't do much on the pop charts but obviously it was never going to be a "black and yellow" type crossover hit

ross doesn't have many outright awful songs true but that's one of benefits of having zero creativity or inkling to take any kind of risk or surprise anyone ever

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:54 (thirteen years ago)

Hardy Rock Anthem (crüt), Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:56 (thirteen years ago)

the best thing he ever did was being able to transition the persona of "rick ross" into the music of rick ross. his music initially was kind of thrown at the wall initially but it was all sorta held together by his image, but around 'deeper than rap' when he locked into that lush, expensive, luxurious, orchestral kinda sound i think the tone and direction of his career changed and he was taken more seriously by critics, fans and peers. and even now he can do street stuff like BMF (or "mafia music" or "i'm a star") that just sound HUGE and feel like an outgrowth of the expansive justice league stuff

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:57 (thirteen years ago)

like, i like "i'm a boss" and "here i am" a lot but if ross made those songs now you'd just be like... these are so minor, not even in terms of quality but just how they try and approach the listener

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:58 (thirteen years ago)

er, no "i'm a boss" but w/e the one w/ t-pain is. "the boss"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:58 (thirteen years ago)

also how dare anyone question "Maybach Music 2"

Hardy Rock Anthem (crüt), Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:02 (thirteen years ago)

i question the way t-pain pronounces "myooozeeek" and the infuriatingly smug way lil wayne says "well alright" at the beginning of his verse

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:04 (thirteen years ago)

wtf is 'bizarre' about repping for the original 'super high' ?? thats a dope song

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:20 (thirteen years ago)

it's definitely not

the production is good (shocker) but those overly heavy r&b ross songs are just kinda really mushy to me

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

i think "purple rain over central park chillin with my goons" is the moment i decided rick ross was a good rapper

Jacques_Lamure, Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:26 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, j0rdan, i just totally disagree. expensive production, R&B superstar choruses, that stuff is part & parcel of the ross aesthetic. i mean aston martin music relies incredibly heavily on it & thats one of his best

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

"super high" as a concept & production was put to 1 million x better use on the remix

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:28 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know, "super high" and "magnificent" just feel really canned and uninspired to me

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:29 (thirteen years ago)

bougie r&b club ross is good ross imo

The Reverend, Sunday, 30 October 2011 12:37 (thirteen years ago)

all the ross songs i really like (blow, mafia music, i'm not a star) are all the straight up rap bangers, i never really understood why someone who got his first hit with a song like 'hustlin' would kind of voluntarily make cheeseball r&b his niche
