i love "Is That Yo Bitch" but i was kinda sticking to album tracks just to keep it simple and i already had 2 Timbo beats anyway
its really impossible to do a jay POX & it totally changes depending on what mood im in. if im feeling the soulful blueprint/dynasty/bp2 shit then ill end up underrating his late 90s bangers or we/

you know i dont really get why this shit gets overlooked either. partly cause its not ye or blaze i think tho its better (imo) that any of their tracks on b'print--the bass line alone is nuts. partly cause its the first track--jigga has this habit of burying some of his best stuff in "intro"/"interlude" tracks (see also: psa and the dynasty intro track) that i think ppl ignore.
but goddamn is it good. sets the mood for the album so well!

I'm so pleased to see "It's Hot (Some Like It Hot)" on so many lists, I'd always assumed that was one of the relatively-passed-over tunes on Vol 3.
6/10 (or 11) overlap between lex and me.

― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 16:17 (fourteen years ago)
i've never heard anything particularly like that beat on any other Timbaland production. a producer in Baltimore took the offbeat claps and kind of made that into a riddim on a lot of popular local rap and club songs, though.

Thinking about this just reinforces how much of a better career that Jay-Z has had compared to Nas. Not to derail this thread or anything, but the fact there was actually a time when people thought Nas was better than Hov is funny. I mean I adore Nas, but Jay has made MORE better music by far.
― rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)
Idk about that, I consider Illmatic and Stillmatic classics, love God's Son and It Was Written, and like most of the rest.
I think Jay definitely covered more sonic territory, but I'm probably a bigger Nas fan than Jay-Z
― felching in the dark (San Te), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

Don`t get me wrong, San Te. Illmatic is my favourite album. Ever. Period. I also love Stillmatic, God`s Son (so underrated) and It Was Written. But even Stillmatic is kind of uneven. The rest I can leave.

i don't think "Empire" on a POX is any crazier than J0rdan putting "Frontin'," both are perfectly nice songs for reasons that have very little to do with Jay. although Shakey's list with exactly one song from before The Black Album is obviously hysterical.

I was trolling a bit insofar is my list is the grand total of Jay-Z songs on my iPod lol. Since I didn't find anything on the other albums that I really wanted to listen to more than once. I think this is cuz I kinda hate a lot of Jay's beats.

It's very herbish I know but I sincerely think that the run of Jay-Z/Timbo collabos on Vol 3 is one of the greatest producer/mc match-ups ever - "It's Hot (Some Like It Hot)", "Come & Get Me", "Snoopy Track", "Big Pimpin", "Is That Yo Bitch" (I know this was on the Bleek album in the US tho) - all amazing, each one totally different from any other.

also lol the album Keyes took 8 songs off of was Reasonable Doubt, not Blueprint
― hercudeez and nuts affair (some dude), Friday, 4 February 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)
lol
yeah nothing from Reasonable Doubt stuck with me, but I haven't listened to it in like 2 years
― bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 4 February 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)
fuck man if Reasonable Doubt doesn't make you feel something you may have died a diarrhea death in the 19th century
― i pl0p bombs like hiroshima (San Te), Friday, 4 February 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)
I don't know what to tell you. I definitely ignored Jay-Z for the first decade of his career, was pretty much down on any and all NY chart-rap (Biggie, Jay Z, DMX lol) for most of the mid-90s/early 00s. I had never even heard Reasonable Doubt until a few years ago. I can see how it's key to his mythology but yeah it just didn't really resonate with me.
― bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 4 February 2011 22:41 (fourteen years ago)
I went from someone who hated Jay-Z and told everyone he was the worst rapper of all time to loving him, mostly on the strength of Blueprint and RD

tbh what i like about this is i think there are tons of fans out there just like this who never admit that they slept on or werent feeling the classics

i like that shakey mo doesnt front abt it is what i mean

i've always kinda felt ILX was the one place you could challenge teh canon without as much of the kneejerk as other message boards.
― i pl0p bombs like hiroshima (San Te), Friday, 4 February 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)
with the caveat being that you do it with actual reasoning and not provocation!
i think there are tons of fans out there just like this who never admit that they slept on or werent feeling the classics
you have a weird preoccupation with not taking people's opinions at face value. and with manufacturing strawmen (like who are these "other fans" out there that only YOU know the true feelings of?)
that being said, will listen to Reasonable Doubt again now
― bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 4 February 2011 23:41 (fourteen years ago)
dude, he was giving you a compliment, given how wrongheaded your position on Jay-Z is I'd take it and run.
― Tim F, Friday, 4 February 2011 23:47 (fourteen years ago)
For me, I got RD a year after it came out, listened to it a thousand times and didn't bother to get any other Jay-Z stuff until the Blueprint. Still haven't heard Vol. 1-3 aside from the singles. Lame, I know.
― President Keyes, Friday, 4 February 2011 23:47 (fourteen years ago)
Can't Knock the Hustle = This piss-poor parroting of F. Murray Abraham's dialogue from Scarface doesn't do the opening any favors. Once the song kicks in, the rapping's great. but this beat is totally boring - usually I appreciate a little Mary J. but this chorus/hook is just blah. I have this problem with a lot of Jay-Z stuff, unfortunately.
― bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 4 February 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)
Politics as Usual = ugh what are these horrible string keyboard stabs. again, the rapping is great, the beat I find actively irritating.

Brooklyn's Finest = ah Clark Kent. this is a bit better, but man is it glossy. Carlito's Way thing at the beginning is silly. "Niggaz 'round the way call me Igloo Stix (Who?)" lol
― bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 5 February 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)
Dead Presidents II = the best thing on here so far. lol at Nas sample. His flow is kinda crazy for how mid-tempo this beat is.
― bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 5 February 2011 00:08 (fourteen years ago)
Feelin It = this is pretty good. last verse is great. the way he goes from elation at the beginning to downcast confusion at the end is classic. singer is kinda annoying. beat's okay.

― basedketball (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 5 February 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)
D'Evils = ah Premier sampling Snoop. Thought I would like this beat more than I do though. "never prayed to God, I prayed to Gotti" haha. man a lot of great lines in this. second verse about the baby mama is bonkers.
― bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 5 February 2011 00:19 (fourteen years ago)
This is like some Jim DeRogotis shit right here.

22 Twos = awesome beat. verse is kinda lame but he gets some good lines off ("I change styles every too rhymes" ha)

Damn, never knew about this record. Jay-Z (along with Jaz and a couple others) in 86. I always thought "Hawaiian Sophie" was his first appearance on record. :O

Rev - that is sort of wonderful. Wandering youtubes, found this. I forget that I was too young to truly appreciate the weird collision of TV and rap in the early/mid-90s. But yeah, this is awesome in a really weird sort of way.

Like...what channel was this? I can't imagine anything like this in 2011. Also, Jay lightly chastising the audience singing along "Clean Version, hey, Clean Version" is totally classic.
― Alex in Montreal, Sunday, 6 February 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)
lol @ "clean version" and the slow motion sway-dancing to "dead presidents"
― symsymsym, Sunday, 6 February 2011 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
That's Teen Summit on BET. Weird to see Jay looking kind of unseasoned as a live performer.

d'evils
there's so many straight classics on reasonable doubt that i'm never sure if i love this more than people do generally - the verse when he kidnaps the girl is one of my favourites, & sorta gets at what he was doing that feels kinda unusual; it was still bragging but it's so cinematic & narrative & off-track.
