ILM 2010 Albums Poll Ballot+Stats Fiesta

Full results

As in the tracks poll, we have Enthusiasm and Diversity scores for each album:

Enthusiasm = average points/ballot - 26
If an album has negative Enthusiasm, this means it was typically in the lower half of ballots

Diversity = (number of albums with which the album shared a ballot)/(number of ballots it was on)
If an album has lower Diversity than its neighbours in the ranking (e.g. Ciara), the ballots voting for it were more homogeneous. Diversity will be lower for higher-ranked ballots (more chance of overlap) so comparing #1 with #50 doesn't tell you anything interesting.

Voter stats:

(note that none of the stats pay attention to whether your ballot was weighted or not, or how you ranked the albums on it)

Hivemind Score: Average overall point score for the albums on your ballot
Fuxxor Quotient: Average "score" in the Pitchfork Top 50 for the albums on your ballot
Antifuxxor Ratio = (HS/FQ): if this is high, then your taste is much closer to ILM's than to Pitchfork
Loneliness = the proportion of albums on your ballot that nobody else voted for ;_;

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

wow even FANTASIA beat sade too? o_0 (as pleased as i am that others cared about ms barrino)

actress an unsurprising #78, had been half-expecting it for most of the countdown.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

i think there were more than 5 #1s that didn't make the top 77? Johnny said there were 72 that did, out of 100+ ballots

ciderpress, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

That was someone else keeping track of #1s...Jeff W I think?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

wow i'm the #3 ilx hivemind voter-- 23/25 placed! though i guess that's what i get for deliberately boosting albums that i figured would place. next year i oughta vote my heart? judging by what missed the top 77 narrowly, i may have helped demdike stare, high on fire, kylesa all to make the countdown. though on the flipside, if i boosted a handful of these albums over something worthless in its vicinity, i guess that's fine w/ me as well

UNRANKED>..... bolded the two albums that missed the countdown

Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Rick Ross - The Teflon Don
The-Dream - Love King
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh

Neil Young - Le Noise

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

Gatekeeper — Giza

i did not realise gatekeeper released an album, how does it compare to their optimus maximus ep? loved that.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

Phosphorescent and John Grant got 2 #1s, and there were a couple of albums that only got #1s:

Butch Walker & The Black Widows I Liked it Better When You Had No Heart
Gemma Ray It's a Shame About Gemma Ray
Jahcoozi Barefoot Wanderer
Jana Winderen Energy Field
Outrageous Cherry Seemingly Solid Reality

Daithi Lacha Flame (seandalai), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:34 (fourteen years ago)

lots of big names missing the top 77 - B&S, Superchunk, Underworld, Sade, of Montreal, Field Music, Liars, Best Coast. Tough year!

skip, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

The Hold Steady - Heaven Is Whenever - 32 - 1

You can sort the results by #votes and #1s via the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet btw.

Daithi Lacha Flame (seandalai), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

lex that one's an EP too

ciderpress, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

I'm a bit sad I'm not infinitely Antifuxxor this time around, but was definitely expecting to have a little fuxxorism. With the loneliness stat, I wouldn't mind having a solid number as well as the proportion, because I am bad at maths. Although I guess I could just go through the full results...

Here's my ballot, anyway. Will follow the convention of bolding what didn't place. It's ranked.

Owen Pallett — Heartland
Umberto — Prophecy of the Black Widow
Sylvester Anfang II — Commune Cassetten
SHRAG — Life! Death! Prizes!
Trembling Bells — Abandoned Love
Kemialliset Ystävät — Ullakkopalo
Drum Eyes — Gira Gira
Moon Wiring Club — A Spare Tabby at the Cat's Wedding
The Mountain Movers — Apple Mountain
Library Tapes — Like Green Grass Against a Blue Sky
Love Is All — Two Thousand and Ten Injuries

Since I voted I've heard both the Curren$y and the School Of Seven Bells albums which would have all easily made my list.

seandalai, I'm not entirely sure how to describe SHRAG without using the term 'art pop' and I might have to shoot myself if I do. I guess sort of bratpunky pop? They're really great.

Looking at my ballot now, I'd probably move around everything from #8 downwards. Not sure it's entirely representative of how much I like everything in comparison to everything else.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

I forgot a lot of stuff I ranked. I didn't have as much time to keep up with music in 2010 so most of my votes were old favorites who put out good albums in the year (eg Superchunk). My 2,3, and 4 were Swans, Big Boi and Kanye, so it was nice to see them ranked high on the final list, though they were pretty much all foregone conclusions.

My #1 was "Grinderman 2" by Grinderman. Thought it would make the list around midway somewhere, surprised it didn't rank at all. It had perfect combinations of chaos and songfulness/tunefulness, and a great mix of filth, beauty, humor, and danger. Plus it had great back-up vocals on almost every song, which I think is kind of a lost art in rock music.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

^^^I say it with love but that is fuxxor-tastic, right down to the 'not including a bottom 10' xps to Moodles :P

EZ, is that Rose Kemp album good then? I liked Unholy Majesty!

acoleuthic, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

I think the latest Rose Kemp is the best thing she's done.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

And I like the other stuff quite a bit.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

I know I also ranked Harvey Milk, No Age, Superchunk, and Les Savy Fav. I didn't have as much time to investigate new bands in 2010 so I ended up with a lot of old faves on my list. The only one I feel kind of embarrassed about voting for is Les Savy Fav, one of my favorite bands but not really a great album in the end.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

awesome, will investigate :)

Dave85, interesting that you put Efdemin above John Roberts, I need to go back and listen to that more.

it was a combination of sentimental attachment, living in chicago, love of FM synths, and seeing efdemin dj which pushed him towards the top

I wonder why more people didn't vote for the Grinderman album. Maybe burned out on Nick Cage? Maybe too jokey sometimes? People are weird about humor in music sometimes.

My #1, John Grant, got only one other vote and that was a #1 too. In quality vs quantity terms that's quite something.

yeah me too although contrasting that list w/ the 2005-2009 poll we did earlier this year its interesting to see whats either grown in stature and/or how the composition of who votes in ilm polls has changed. the 2007 list is p much unimaginable today

Love both a lot. It feels odd seeing them on my own ballot up there with, say, Kanye, because they require such completely different ways of listening to it (well, for me anyway). Love them just as dearly though. I was surprised by 'Raw Fall', though I'd gone off Menche for good, but no. Great album, and that goes for Fullerton Whitman as well obv.

xp hehehe unfortunately I forgot to copy and paste it into a document before I sent. It had some shameless fuxxory stuff like LCD, Caribou, Flying Lotus, Glasser, Swans (i guess?)..rounded off with more individual things (Zs, Zach Hill, Marnie Stern, Mark E, Oh No Ono, Robert Plant (seriously! and ofc I <3 Zep)). I thiink we both voted for Jaga which is a good proggy listen. And it was unranked.

yeah i listened to one track, it was much better than the unbelievably pretentious blurb suggested. it sort of casio'd along doing not much for a while, then got kind of groovy like dam funk with shit drums. i liked it.

xpost to Skip

I loved that Swiss EP! Their remix of Ladyhawke's Magic was pretty fantastic too.

The Young - Voyagers of Legend - Kind of reminds of Thinking Fellers Union Local #282 or at least would fit in with the "college rock" of that era. Sloppy and sludgy and just sounded really good when I came upon it. Phoebis Cluster

Velour - The Velvet Collection - More Night Slugs stuff in the vein of Girl Unit.

Digital Mystikz - Return II Space - Ominous and sparse dubstep. It took me a while to get into this one. I was kinda bored with it at first. Pop Pop Epic

John Roberts - Glass Eights - Beautiful sad house record. Glass Eights

acoleuthic, Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

currently listening to side 1 of bj nilson - draught #1, which is one-note atonal glass harp with dogs at various distances down a cave groaning, only to be replaced after a while by fuzz and icy sheets of noise and buzzing electric echo. & now back to glass harp again and a tinkling like bells and perhaps birdsong, and some hints of melodic sweetness for the first time. i guess this reminds me of...AMM? and various found sound collages. anyway i'm kind of nonplussed at it being someone's near record of the year, but it's prob better than a lot of other ballots.

xp The Drift is a colossal fearful beast of an album that I must revisit (and which has ILM appeal for aeons, wouldn't you say.)

And it seems like there was no stifling GAPDY consensus...it was a healthy year for new music.

Davek (davek_00), Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

xp AG - What's it like? I don't really know much about this "scene" beyond Zombi and Umberto.

Daithi Lacha Flame (seandalai), Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

zvookster: There was some mention of Umberto over on the Zombi thread but it did seem to pass by mostly unnoticed.

I feel/hope the new dilettante crew rolling thread will end up as a natural home for a lot of this avant-accessible music, given the proclivities of the soon-to-be-regulars.

Daithi Lacha Flame (seandalai), Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

Which Steve Moore LP? I think he's got a few. The Henge has a few genuinely frightening moments on it.

Steve Moore - Primitive Neural Pathways LP I got the last one from Norman Records but i expect you can still get it from Boomkat or the label (static caravan)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

i'm kind of nonplussed at it being someone's near record of the year, but it's prob better than a lot of other ballots.

two things one exculpatory the other explanatory: a) i took my list from a top twenty i did for another eoy list where i was writing more in-depth. my bj nilsen 'vote' was really for draught #1 & invisible cities which is more substantial although less 'emotive' than the ash tape. my jana winderen write up also included her 'noisiest guys on the planet' tape fwiw

b) im less interested in formal qualities than i am in a record's ability to provoke: emotion, thought, resonance &c. the live performance that draught #1 draws from probably isnt the 'best' sound collage work ive ever heard but it required a level of engagement & concentration & stillness that i really admired & appreciated

sleeve, Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

yeah one thing i appreciate in it and an excerpt of the winderen i heard is using quietness and at times near silence as a value in itself

the use of silence & space in 'energy field' is incredible bcuz she manages not only to suggest the immensity and solemnity of the landscape but also the way the world shes recording is disappearing through climate change. i also think she evokes the almost cosmic horror of man's relationship to nature w/ those silences & the way changes in texture and sound occur in irregular, unmusical ways e.g. the middle section of 'isolation/measurement' where the long silence that leads into a ghostly hum seems to measure time on a much longer scale

i def got "the immensity and solemnity of the landscape" just from whatever 5:30 was excerpted but i hadn't thought of the quietness and some of the more discomfiting noises from the ecological side. some of what we're hearing is prob human noise pollution now that i think of it. i feel like something nilson has going for it that winderen doesn't is the tension of performance - what if it goes wrong, what if it stays this beautiful, what if it stays this ugly, what if it keeps building til it overwhelms me, what if it ends &etc. so because it's two prolonged live pieces happening in real time yr locked into them as an audience member, not a consumer with a product that u can pause or walk away from. xp to lamp

zvookster, Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

@ the same time, that's somewhat exhausting tho

zvookster, Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

Le Bateau Ivre, I was confused by Oud & Synthesizer being nominated and not Disingenuity, would definitely have voted for the latter. Also, I desperately attempted to find that Robert Ashley but failed completely.

Glad to see Dan S' ballot is full of excellence, as he is my closest neighbour.

who were the other 2 voters for kemialliset ystävät?

I was one of them.

are there places where u guys wrote abt these recordings, emil.y & lamp (or indeed sean)? like umberto, Jana Winderen, bj nilson, sylvester angfang

Not really - I think I've chatted about Umberto a little bit, maybe, but not really seen a place relevant to chat about Sylvester Anfang, and always worry about starting threads for stuff that probably won't get many responses. Plus I tend to like the more back-and-forth discussion on poll threads rather than making proclamations that I'll probably be embarrassed by later, ha.

emil.y, Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

contrasting that list w/ the 2005-2009 poll we did earlier this year its interesting to see whats either grown in stature and/or how the composition of who votes in ilm polls has changed. the 2007 list is p much unimaginable today

ehh, all of top 4 in '07 made it to the top 10 of the half-decade poll. I think the '07 poll kind of plays it safe, though there are some great indie wtf entries (Drum's Not Dead, anyone). I think the most wtf poll up there is def. the '08 poll, & not just because the low placing of Erykah (& Weezy). That poll made this one look like the P&J; it almost had sort of a fever-dream surreal quality to it, honest to God!...

ellj versus deej (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

The four albums that nobody except me voted for - shame on y'all:

Tape and Bill Wells - Fugue
Dylan Ettinger - New Age Outlaws
Bandjo - Bandjo
Vijay Iyer - Solo

Daithi Lacha Flame (seandalai), Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

one of my good friends swears on that Vijay Iyer record, I need to give it a listen

acoleuthic, Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

The Bandjo album is worth checking out if you're a fan of Scandinavian cosmic beach music in the vein of Studio. The vibe is similar to West Coast, if a bit darker and with an unfortunately greater prevalence of those dubious vocals. It's on Spotify, Unknown Island is the only track up on Youtube and it's one of the weaker ones imo.

Daithi Lacha Flame (seandalai), Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

I listened to Fugue and thought it was good, but not mind-blowing. Only heard it once, though, so it may well be a grower.

emil.y, Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

I love Fugue and I still wouldn't say it's mind-blowing. Its pleasures are subtle.

Daithi Lacha Flame (seandalai), Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

thanks emil.y! I don't recognize some of the stuff on your ballot. have downloaded the Umberto and Kemialliset Ystavat but haven't heard them yet.

I haven't heard Fugue, but I thought KFW's Disingenuity/Disingenuousness and the other Pan LP I heard this year from Joseph Hammer were excellent

Dan S, Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, Joseph Hammer! That record is really good. Didn't hear that until after the nominations were over, though, and it wasn't nominated by anyone else. Me and Craigo saw him play Colour Out Of Space last year, which was great - beautiful cut-up tape loops with bits of submerged radio etc.

have decided to get the shackleton and legendary pink dots records based on the ballots containing them

cloudy predecessor (Lamp), Friday, 4 February 2011 02:19 (fourteen years ago)

Five people voted Mark E for the volume 1, anyone get the second volume? I just started listening to the first track and this is exquisite ... DJ Sprinkles like?

Umm, I think that's my glass. (laser precise purpose maker era), Friday, 4 February 2011 02:25 (fourteen years ago)

aw Lamp thanks for the Pink Dots props... I really tried w/that Jana Winderen based on your nomination but all I heard was Chris Watson... I'll give it another go.

sleeve, Friday, 4 February 2011 03:07 (fourteen years ago)

lol well i like chris watson too! but i think the dialogue that winderen opens up btw listener & subject is a lot more considered and interesting than in the work ive heard from watson

idk i mean im both a biologist & big fantasy nerd so this idea of documenting forces vast & unseen that lay @ the root of our world is really compelling to me & i think contra to what zvookster says there is a real tension to the record bcuz it positions the listener not as a consumer but as an active witness (which is why it works so hard to make you listen) to something so much ~bigger~ than themselves.

the sound of these mammoth sheets of ice cracking apart and dissolving feels both ancient and terminal

cloudy predecessor (Lamp), Friday, 4 February 2011 04:09 (fourteen years ago)

if i had voted i would've thrown one of those mark e volumes a few points, i like them both but it's hard to compare to vol 1 when it has "rnb drunkie"

xp

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Friday, 4 February 2011 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

The problem with Vol. 1 is I start listening to it and then get bored and end up just listening to "RnB Drunkie" over and over.

The Reverend, Friday, 4 February 2011 04:54 (fourteen years ago)

Here's my ranked ballot, highlighted the ones that made it to the top 77:

Jahcoozi - Barefoot Wanderer
Jätkäjätkät- Ykstoist Ykstoist
Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid
Kelis - Flesh Tone

Uusi Fantasia - Heimo
Acid Washed - Acid Washed
Mavis Staples - You're Not Alone
Ellen Allien - Dust
Daft Punk - Tron: Legacy
Various Artists - Ayobaness! The Sound of South African House
Black Dog - Music for Real Airports

No one else gave a single point for my top 2 albums. :( Well, with Jätkäjätkät that was foreseeable (didn't assume many people here would know or care about Finnish progressive gypsy folk/rap/reggae music), but I would've thought someone would've included Jahcoozi in their ballot.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 February 2011 07:36 (fourteen years ago)

Of the albums I hadn't previously heard that I've checked out so far (many more to come in the next few weeks/months), I'm most impressed with Gayngs.

Sounds like something that was meticulously designed to appeal to my hearing. I don't find any of it false or namby-pamby like some people said. The blue-eyed soul/soft rock influence is there, but it's not done in a tongue-in-cheek way; it's been reimagined as psychedelia.

When 10CC's "I'm not in Love" turned up on the 20thC poll, someone fittingly described it as a "love song for spacemen", which is exactly what Relayted is.

And I love the version of "Cry" - incredibly powerful. It's amazing that people are still finding influences from the '80s to mine, but they are, and hell, as long as it isn't some bland electro or postpunk pastiche, i'm happy.

If chillwave means stuff like this, Games and VHS Head, then count me on board. I don't care how hipsterish it is (living where I do, hipsters don't really register on my radar), I love this kind of sound. I'm not so keen on things like jj though.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Marina & the Diamonds - quite different to what I expected. Find it strange how her voice seems to jump from r'n'b diva to Lahndahn indie-pop chick. It's kind of confusing, but in a cool way I guess.

I'm surprised Shining's Blackjazz didn't place higher. I was certain the metal contingent would come out in favour of it, but it just scraped. I suggest even non-metal fans listen to this.

Also depressed about Autechre placing outside the 77. I know there was a lot of enthusiasm for it, plus 2010 was such a great year for Ae on ILM, what with those polls.

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Friday, 4 February 2011 10:12 (fourteen years ago)

@Emily, you can buy Robert Ashley here. Or did you mean you couldn't find mp3's/stream?

@Lamp, please do get the Legendary Pink Dots record, it's ace!

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Friday, 4 February 2011 10:35 (fourteen years ago)

ranked, non top-77 bolded:

Gemma Ray — It's a Shame About Gemma Ray
Yakuza Heart Attack — II
Stereolab — Not Music
Nicki Minaj — Pink Friday
Eliza Doolittle — Eliza Doolittle

Four Tet — There Is Love in You
Laura Veirs — July Flame
Laura Marling — I Speak Because I Can
Kelis — Flesh Tone
Taylor Swift — Speak Now
The-Dream — Love King
Jazmine Sullivan — Love Me Back
Guido — Anidea
Laetitia Sadier — The Trip
Lindstrøm & Christabelle — Real Life Is No Cool
The Bird and The Bee — Interpreting the Masters, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall & John Oates
Tinie Tempah — Disc-Overy
Ellen Allien — Dust
Goldfrapp — Head First
Wing — Wing Sings For All the Single Ladies and Raps For All the Safe Parties
Prins Thomas — Prins Thomas
The Ruby Suns — Fight Softly

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti — Before Today
Mulatu Astatke — Mulatu Steps Ahead
Moon Wiring Club — A Spare Tabby at the Cat's Wedding

I strongly recommend the Gemma Ray album to fuxxors and anti-fuxxors alike. It's a covers album, mainly just Gemma and her electric guitar (with a bit of help from Matt Verta-Ray who used to be in Madder Rose), recorded very quickly over new year 2009-10. Kinda baffled really that nobody else on ILM even seems to have heard it.

Is this the year we've had the most metal albums hit?

Not in the top 50 dont think.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 4 February 2011 10:39 (fourteen years ago)

It's amazing that people are still finding influences from the '80s to mine, but they are, and hell, as long as it isn't some bland electro or postpunk pastiche, i'm happy.

I've been wanting to say, but haven't been sure quite where to put (or how to put it, for that matter), that checking out things for this poll has reinforced my sense that the 80s revival is alive and well. But it's really less a matter of a revival at this point and more a matter of certain strands of 80s music becoming more fully digested and simply becoming ongoing possibilities within the culture. Sometimes this leaves me disoriented though, wondering why people who seem very interested in what's new are so excited by things that sound like what I was listening to in high school (in the 80s).

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not sure exactly what I just said there, so please don't ask for clarification.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

I think I would have voted for this Kelis album if I'd heard it in time, though it might have been in the lower half of my list. I'm still sorting it out. Parts of it are really terrific, but it's short and I think there's a little bit of dead time on it.

I still haven't gotten all the way through the Knife album. That might require the right mood to get through, though I like the track that made the track poll.

Re: the 80s, I guess to underscore what dog latin was saying: not just that the 80s are still around and active as a source but that more and more of it is being dug into.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

I think I like Oneohtrix, too, but I need to listen more for real. Emeralds is just too much like the old electronic music I used to listen to and mostly gave up, though I still need to give it a thorough listen. Caribou is okay but the vocals bug me and it all feels a bit smug somehow, but I can see the appeal, I guess.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

Also, I need to go back and hear some earlier Kelis albums now.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

Rudipherous, no it makes sense.

I think it's entirely healthy for a revival to outlast its own faddiness. I think that a lot of people were waiting for the eighties revival to die down so we could start making music again without having to get dressed up in Sigue Sigue spandex or resorting to ironic square-wave synth. But after over a decade of eighties-influenced music, where would we be if we decided to consign that influence to the bin?

Truth is, the eighties revival doesn't need to die, it just needs to shake off its tongue-in-cheek shackles. I guess this is how all revivals work - people go "Haw! remember the lol'70s, what about all those wafros and flares and John Travolta?"; then it's, "Hey some of this is quite cool in a cheesy way - let's do an ABBA tribute"; then it's, "We want to make an album that sounds like a cross between On The Beach, Kick Out The Jams and Maggot Brain". And so on, until the '70s revival becomes so assimilated with modern pop culture that the influences are borne without massive red arrows pointing at them going "LOOK I AM REVIVING THE SEVENTIES!!!"

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Friday, 4 February 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

That sounds about right.

Somehow this seems relevant: I remember playing a Siouxsie and the Banshees song within earshot of my brother's wife, who had not particular interest in music, some time in the mid-to-late-80s and her saying: "This sounds like a 60s band," which wasn't entirely wrong, since there is plenty of psychedelia running through Siouxsie & the Banshees.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

Not sure if I voted exactly this way, but I kept a ranked list of the stuff I listened to in 2010 here:

President Keyes, Friday, 4 February 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

just curious, how many times do u listen to a record in yr top 50 say? like how many of those have u played the hell out of, and at what sort of number does it become two listens, one listen?

zvookster, Friday, 4 February 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Friday, 4 February 2011 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

I think everything in the top 100 I listened to 5-7 times at least, with the upper 50 more like 10 times or more. The stuff past 100 is probably in the 1-3 times range.

President Keyes, Friday, 4 February 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

lex i think that's counting any one track from an album, i.e. yr top nina nastasia track has 20 plays, yr nina album count is 140

zvookster, Friday, 4 February 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

lex is 99% of your listening really done in front of a computer?

Tim F, Friday, 4 February 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that 140 = i have played individual tracks off the nina nastasia album 140 times

(obv this skews in favour of eg the diddy album which has 19 tracks in total on its deluxe edition)

xp my ipod scrobbles count too

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Friday, 4 February 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

but yeah 100% of at-home listening is done through the computer, which is plugged into the stereo system & proper speakers - obv not necessarily while i'm actually in front of the computer

Thanks. I'm probably not in the market for that right now, but eventually. (I keep kicking myself for buying a car instead of escaping apartment living hell and renting a house. It seemed like the right decision at the time, but now it's going to delay, possibly significantly, getting myself into a small house where I can have control over my aural environment.)

would quite like to know what other webzines contained all of yelawolf, ciara, we love, swans, glasser, jazmine sullivan, WAKA, taylor swift, diddy and earl sweatshirt in their top 40

also people who didn't vote can quit complaining

i am of the vague opinion that every working critic should be on last.fm.

Honest question: why? Has never occurred to me and not sure why it matters.

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (Dorianlynskey), Thursday, 10 February 2011 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

ha it's only a vague opinion, but a critic's taste is a part of our selling point/brand/whatever, right? certainly looking at a person's taste in toto helps me understand where they're coming from w/r/t their opinions.

always tempted to point PRs there when they start hassling me, too. "does it LOOK LIKE i'd be interested in that shit you sent me?"

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 February 2011 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

ciara will be more valued on an ilx album poll than most elsewhere, but since she had a couple of the consensus top10 rnb songs of last decade it's not really a recondite /name/

tho i am from an opposite perspective to lex since i am really not invested in many of the names who placed (or could have been expected to place)

stuff i voted (and a few that weren't nominated) was s/thing like

autechre
pan sonic
neil young
actress
oneohrix
lcd
lovesliescrushing
vainio/booth/matsunaga
forest swords
fennoberg

various things i have forgotten

the ineluctable bigness of john mensah (nakhchivan), Thursday, 10 February 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

xpost. Ah, I see. I think my taste is broader than yours (or maybe more dilettantish/distractable) so I don't think lastfm stats would reveal as much.

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (Dorianlynskey), Thursday, 10 February 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

it might actually help with more dilettantish tastes - to see if you can pin down any common thread! (and in my case it'd reveal a lot of stuff that people might find unexpected.)

if i was a PR i would totally track journalists' last.fms, see when they're in a particular mood for a type of music and hit 'em with it at that point.

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 February 2011 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

I bet there still are a lot of music journalists who listen to stuff mostly on vinyl and CDs, so last.fm wouldn't really reveal that much about them.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 February 2011 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not a journalist, but my last.fm figures don't really represent my listening habits, as maybe 5% of my listening is done via the computer.

John Grant — Queen of Denmark

btw i now think this album is completely amazing, so thanks to dorian for turning me on to it - he definitely reminds me of someone really specific but i can't bring it to mind - something to do with his kinda laconically romantic style. like he erodes the distinction between cynic and romantic.

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 February 2011 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

Smoke Fairies — Through Light and Trees

These girls are amazing. Saw them live. Two girls with capo'd classicals stomping their heels and harmonising like nothing else. Filled the room. I'd like to hear the album. Beautifully folky, and a good antidote for those who get a bit sick of Newsom's ickiness. There's absolutely nothing pretentious or cloying in them, just really pure music.
