not looking forward to Eminem winning everything AT ALL

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

was Eminem's album really that big over there? i honestly had no idea. biggest seller of the year or something.

piscesx, Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:36 (fourteen years ago)

eminem's already lost in five or his 10 categories. he's won one (best rap solo perf, "not afraid"). jay-z on the other hand is cleaning up so far.

fact checking cuz, Monday, 14 February 2011 00:13 (fourteen years ago)

five OF his 10

God plz make Florence Welch shut up.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 February 2011 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

i don't fuck w/ her music but she kinda killed that imo

DINPLINGS! (some dude), Monday, 14 February 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

i missed the very beginning, is there any particular reason this random assemblage of women is opening the show with an Aretha medley?

DINPLINGS! (some dude), Monday, 14 February 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

I just hate the timbre of Florence's voice, especially when she's grouped with women who can actually sing instead of just wail.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 February 2011 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

They didn't say. I suspect it's because she has advanced pancreatic cancer? I mean. Not to be totally morbid but I 'm worried that they know something we don't and we'll be getting the news in the next day or two?

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 14 February 2011 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

Aretha has pancreatic cancer and the Grammys marketing folks figured having a Brit, a country singer, a pop singer, a gospel singer etc would be the best way to pay tribute

curmudgeon, Monday, 14 February 2011 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

Think she made a mistake by releasing the single on Friday, because this is definitely how it should've debuted.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 February 2011 01:27 (fourteen years ago)

Nope. Still not any good. Even in an egg.

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 14 February 2011 01:30 (fourteen years ago)

DINPLINGS! (some dude), Monday, 14 February 2011 01:33 (fourteen years ago)

Washington Post on awards given out pre-show:

Some other notable winners from the early portion: A humbled and honored Mavis Staples took home the award for best Americana album for the Jeff Tweedy-produced "You Are Not Alone." Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs" was good enough to be nominated for Album of the Year but not good enough to win Best Alternative Album. That award went to the Black Keys for "Brothers." The Black Keys made it two-for-two over Arcade Fire by besting them in best rock performance by a duo or group. Grammys logic at its finest. Neil Young won his first ever Grammy for music, taking home the award for best rock song. (He previous won for packaging.) Young lost out to Paul McCartney in the best rock solo vocal performance, though. Jay-Z and John Legend each scored three early trophies

Neil Young's first ever Grammy for music!

teledyldonix, Monday, 14 February 2011 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who isnt a fan of Monae's schtick. Is she popular because swing-like music is some kind of lolnovelty to young kiddies? idgi. Her outfits are rad tho.

Senor DingDong (Trayce), Monday, 14 February 2011 02:04 (fourteen years ago)

JM is a void of corny contrivance and the most superficial definition of 'talent' imo

This is the single most ridiculous thing I've ever seen you type. I can totally see how her schtick could come across as "corny", yeah, but to say she fits only under "the most superficial definition of 'talent'"??? That is on some willfully ignorant shit right there. Girl has loads of talent, even if she doesn't always use it in the best ways.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 February 2011 02:06 (fourteen years ago)

you missed lady gaga, muse, miranda lambert, janelle monae/b.o.b/bruno mars, and... maybe others?

teledyldonix, Monday, 14 February 2011 02:15 (fourteen years ago)

what i said wasn't meant as "she has no talent" if that's how it was being read fwiw

right, but "most superficial definition of talent" doesn't sound much better than that either. I get her schtick being awful, but after seeing her open for Erykah Badu this year, I can assure you that she has tons of talent (fwiw, I missed her performance tonight, so maybe it was really awful or something)

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 February 2011 02:19 (fourteen years ago)

BTW I also wasnt saying I dont think Monae is talented - she totally is - but I just find it bemusing that she's such a sensation with what seems effectively to be old time jazz standards style stuff. Well what Ive heard of hers anyways.

teledyldonix, Monday, 14 February 2011 03:06 (fourteen years ago)

I don't mind "Need You Now" winning everything in sight. It sounds like "Dreams" and "Go Your Own Way" compared to everything else.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 February 2011 03:06 (fourteen years ago)

x-post to Jordan---I didn't like her either but it had nothing to do with how rich she is

Yeah, I dug it too and 100% hate all involved otherwise.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 February 2011 03:09 (fourteen years ago)

I think the two guys could perform a convincing "Jolene" (Norah Jones is a cipher though) but this seemed too much like predictable Grammy filler unpredictability.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 February 2011 03:10 (fourteen years ago)

i think both lady ant and katyperry both did rilly rilly good versions of their huge hits. they kinda nailed it. and sold a million more!

Adam Levine, man.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 14 February 2011 03:13 (fourteen years ago)

Wacky that Rihanna gets relegated to supporting player (featuring) on this song.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 14 February 2011 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

There's too many rap/r&b collaborations happening anyway. Impossible to know who gets credited where and on what album.

scott seward, Monday, 14 February 2011 03:23 (fourteen years ago)

And also - it was possible to see the band in a small or medium-sized venue at any time post-Neon Bible? The pre-release Church shows in 2007 were small but they haven't played Montreal in anything smaller than a stadium since. Parking lots and islands, etc.

Hmm. Maybe the key is to go see them in Louisiana or something.

2007 was two or three shows at a 5000 person arena (not the biggest arena in the city.
This year, all the concerts they've done here have been outdoor venues/festivals, as much by necessity, I suspect, as anything else.
10,000 ppl in a parking lot and close to 25,000 on an island on the edge of the city.

But, again, Montreal is probably not the best barometer for this. We're the city where they pull 25,000 one day and still wander around our neighbourhood getting clowned by the dudes from the cafe down the street. \(o O)/

(@flopson I figured the notman house one was invitation only.)

So it is possible we won't go to hell for laughing at that clip.

I like that point that Tom Ewing made about the whoisarcadefire blog, in that the joy in looking at it isn't a "we won, suckers!" attitude, but marveling at the genuine incuriosity people have about music with which they're completely unfamiliar.

absolutely true -- this is kind of a re-underlining of a point music obsessives learn early, right: for a small subset of music listeners, "______ won a Grammy, I've never heard of them" immediately makes you feel: curiosity, interest, maybe slight shame for not knowing more about your field of interest. for plenty of people, though, I think, once they've identified the type of music they like, that's the end of the hunt, after which a team sports "LOL @ other types of music, obv. the type I like is best, LOSERS" aspect to it

aerosmith: the acid house years (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 14 February 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

It may not have been a stroke, but now when I watch that clip it's very clear that her brain has some wires crossed which makes it not all that funny. I mean, if she just had her tongue twisted or whatever, that's one thing, but signals weren't getting processed correctly and that's another.

"With no outsider to satisfy the son's sexual urges, the parents allow him to choose one of the daughters for his carnal needs. After fondling both sisters simultaneously in the bath with his eyes closed, he chooses the elder, who is later dressed and prepared by the mother for the sexual encounter. The elder daughter is visibly uncomfortable during intercourse, and afterwards recites a threatening passage from Rocky to her brother."

Even though I'm probably more of a music person than a film person these days, I am WAY more into the Oscars than the Grammys. Like, I forgot that the Grammys were on last night until my girlfriend noticed some headlines on the Internet after we ate dinner. Whereas I specifically scheduled an 11 PM overnight flight back home after EMP weekend so I wouldn't miss the Oscar ceremony.

There was lots of grousing about this in the print media room, with critics having given the band such a boost and all.

The woman in Sugarland strikes me as one of the most ingenuine people on the face of the Earth.

I mean, I hate Carrie Underwood too, but I've never actually entertained the thought that she walks of stage, rips off her human skin to expose the lizard face underneath, and satiates her ravenous hunger on babies.

Industry blogger Bob Lefsetz and his Mumford & Sons versus Arcade Fire battle:

This is all good publicity for Arcade Fire, but know that the Grammy show is now bigger than the acts. And that you can enjoy the winning, but the days of Bonnie Raitt becoming a national hero in wake of her victory are done.

Arcade Fire does not make mainstream music. The mainstream will not embrace them.

That's not a problem. I'm just saying their win is a private moment amongst fans. A good one, but despite winning on a mainstream telecast, it does not make them mainstream.

Mumford eclipsed Arcade Fire on the show. Because they realized on TV it's all about being simple and intimate. You go broad, with explosions and spectacle, live. But not on TV.

Meanwhile, Mumford & Sons' album is $9.99 and Arcade Fire's is $7.99. When you're hot, price is irrelevant.

We sang briefly in the same pro church choir, plus he was Kissinger in the production of Nixon In China I did several years ago. I first met him back in 2000; he was an art song fellow at Tanglewood Music Center, who was putting on a production of "Falstaff" with the opera fellows as leads and using BSO choristers as the opera chorus. He wasn't in the show but, since we were out there for two weeks doing blocking and rehearsing, a lot of the choristers ended up hanging out with a lot of the TMC ppl since we were all around the same age (roughly 27-37). I didn't even know about the Suburbs connection until I offhandedly mentioned The Suburbs on Facebook about a year ago and he was all "oh lol, did I ever mention...?"

I will be checking The New Standards out!

"She asked me what I did for a living. I said 'I'm a janitor,' and she thought I said 'Oh my genitals.' [Richard Whitney] overheard this and wrote the song."

Kelly Clarkson
I have been so tired of music lately. It just all sounds the same and artists are forced to record songs that sound like every other song or their music will get shelved. Finally, Dr. Dre comes out with something so great. His new song "I need a doctor" feat Eminem and Skylar Grey is a fresh taste of what music has the capability of being. Thank you Dr. Dre! I'm inspired and loving every second of this song.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

I think his point is that there is a place for white rage in mainstream culture where there is not one for black rage. It reminded me of all the pundits in 2008 saying how Obama couldn't afford ever to lose his temper and be seen as an angry black guy. The Grammys is a symptom of that rather than a cause.

funny (to me anyway) how all the shock and talk about arcade fire and esperanza spalding -- and usher and bieber and all the spawn of will and jada -- has fully obscured how completely eminem was dissed by the grammys. it's not just that he didn't win album of year, an award that everyone (and i mean everyone) had assumed was his. it's that after getting 10 nominations he came perilously close to winning nothing. jay-z smoked him in two rap categories. lady antebellum and arcade fire, of course, smoked him in the big categories. and even herbie hancock, pink, konono no. 1, oumou sangare and jeff beck smoked eminem, b.o.b. and hayley williams in the pop collaboration category. final grammy score: jeff beck three, eminem two, konono no. 1 one. i don't care what he said in "the real slim shady," eminem can not be happy about that.

Anyone else surprised/disappointed at Muse, Gaga, Eminem & Arcade Fire's emotional humility at being so honoured by winning a Grammy? I expect stars to play the game & be all schmaltzy and gushing, but I would have hoped that at least one of these would have had at least a bit of chutzpah or "forget you, Grammys" about them... even if an artist has the right priorities and perspective to not place too much importance on awards, I think it's more admirable to just smile and say thank you than to act too cool for school about it. if they've already had enough success in the music industry to get to that point, they've probably had to grin and bear much worse bullshit anyway.

I was pretty much on board with this article up until it hit Frank Ocean. I would say Ocean was treated pretty shabbily by the RIAA but if he's the one that's going to be elevated as The Next Deserving Artist out of everyone out there, that's terrible because he more often than not is terrible. (I couldn't even make it past the first song on Blonde.)

Most of the performances I saw were good, even if I didn't like the performers. (I missed Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban, fortunately, as well as Ed Sheeran and most of Metallica and Lady Gaga.) Adele's gigantic oops on the George Michael tribute was great, I kind of wanted her to continue in the weird off-key cross relation that they ended up in before she stopped it.

maybe I'm walking into a hornet's nest but is the argument here that Beyoncé's album was objectively better than Adele's, and therefore obviously deserved the award? doesn't Album of the Year pretty much always go to the one that sold the most? seems odd watching people argue about this the same way people argue about who deserves the baseball MVP, because there are no concrete numbers outside of album sales and chart positions.

frogbs, Monday, 13 February 2017 16:59 (eight years ago)

Album of the Year certainly does not go to the album that sold the most, though sales and popularity can play a bit of part. It typically goes to the album that best appeals to the tastes of old white people.

MarkoP, Monday, 13 February 2017 17:13 (eight years ago)

Overall, despite the “Hello” singer’s well-meaningness, despite her gesture being much braver than Macklemore’s after-the-fact apology, her speech will go down as more white tone-deafness—which, for someone whose fantastic ear is her calling card, is sourly ironic.

Um, no.

Hadrian VIII, Monday, 13 February 2017 17:15 (eight years ago)

Last time Beyoncé lost to Beck, so no, it's not always the one that sells best. It's just mostly the white one. Mostly.

Frederik B, Monday, 13 February 2017 17:18 (eight years ago)

And these last few years it's been really conspicuous, with albums like Channel Orange, To Pimp a Butterfly and now Lemonade losing to far safer records. While of course, what creates news the next day are the performances by these same artists that are getting snubbed.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2017 18:37 (eight years ago)

A few thoughts...

If the artists (black + white) think the voters consistently get it wrong, do what Frank did: don't participate--acceptance, performance, and attendance. The award is only validated because they're all there (no clue if this is actually possible from a recording contract perspective and understand they probably get sales bumps from performing).

I agree with the Slate piece about how to fix the problem, re: voter demographics, but couldn't they just make voters rank all five albums and use a weighted points system? Wouldn't this resolve the vote splitting phenomenon?

Highlights for me were the Sturgill and Tribe performances. The latter ("RESIST RESIST RESIST RESIST") was a welcome wake up after a series of banal messages about unity and "a time of uncertainty".

I think the Grammy's has actually done a pretty good job in recent years of spotlighting emerging artists w/ performances (thinking of Miguel and Brandy Clark in the recent past, Sturgill and Paak last night).

Yeah, it's probably the worst song there - but I really think Winchester Cathedral gets too much heat over this. It wasn't so much of a conservative choice, more a novelty record that got way too big, and I don't think it fits in with the very otm arguments about rockism & racism that are being made here.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Monday, 13 February 2017 20:43 (eight years ago)

Looking at the list, none of the '60s and '70s Album of the Year winners look like terrible choices, although it's odd that comedy albums used to win it. Also I wonder why the Saturday NIght Fever soundtrack won in '79 when it came out in '77.

Tapestry vs. What's Going On would've been an interesting battle in '71 but the latter wasn't nominated

Come to think of it, Glen Campbell won for By the Time I Get to Phoenix in '69, though it was a late '67 release.. Grammy must have an early cutoff date

Josefa, Monday, 13 February 2017 21:07 (eight years ago)

Also I wonder why the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack won in '79 when it came out in '77.

An album from fall of 2015 just won the 2017 Grammy. Grammy's have a cutoff date of September 30th. The Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack came out in November of 77.

Though how Meghan Trainor was nominated for Best New Artist last year, when she had been nominated for 'All About That Bass' the year before, is beyond me.

ah, thanks

Did Lemonade being a Tidal exclusive hurt its chances by keeping it walled off from potential voters?

do the Grammys not do the CD equivalent of screeners?

Not to my knowledge. And one musician on my timeline (a jazz trombonist) said if he'd heard the album more than once, he might have voted for it.

grammy voters are old white men yet they cannot hear music unless it is on their streaming service of choice

dyl, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:18 (eight years ago)

despite its streaming platform exclusivity lemonade was an extremely popular and widely discussed album thruout basically the entire year

dyl, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:19 (eight years ago)

and it still is

Tapestry vs. What's Going On would've been an interesting battle in '71 but the latter wasn't nominated

I looked up Motown's Grammy history -- a Motown artist didn't win anything until 1969 (The Temptations' "Cloud Nine," Best R&B Duo or Group Recording).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:31 (eight years ago)

Yeah, but how much further back do the R&B categories even go?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 01:37 (eight years ago)

To the very first Grammys in 1958. The rock categories came much later. But there were lots of categories the Motown artists theoretically could have won in - pop, record of the year, etc.

I thought based on the headline that Ann Powers NPR piece would discuss who is in the Recording Academy and why do they vote the way they do, but Powers seemed more interested in just focusing on Adele, and addressing the systemic racism she mentions in a more theoretical way.

That would require research and thought. Powers is who you go to for politically on-trend received wisdom and maternal swells of emotion. (I like her as a person, but her big theories of pop make my gums itch.)

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 21:04 (eight years ago)

So, I was thinking. Given the tendency for Grammy voters to favor legacy acts, is it entirely possible for A Tribe Called Quest to get Album of the Year next year? Or would it have to depend on who their competition is?

MarkoP, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 23:17 (eight years ago)

sure, but I wouldn't count on it

maternal swells of emotion

ok seriously Phil?

Seriously. Half her NPR columns can be read in the voice of the Rev. Lovejoy's wife from The Simpsons.

wtf

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 23:49 (eight years ago)

I dislike some of Powers' published work. Her employer demands what-does-this-mean journalism often at war with events. But a 'maternal swell of emotion' is a loathsome phrase that's inaccurate and sexist at the same time.

I await your dismissing me for publishing a piece you'll accuse of yielding to a "homosexual sense of hysteria."

checking in with my usual factual flair of dispassion, i would just like to say that powers' piece today was the smartest piece i've read on this whole mess.

Ann's tweets quoted in this article by John Vilanova (whom she quoted in her piece) were more on point than her article. Although her excusing the rockism of these industry folks kinda bugs me

As outrage erupted over Beyoncé’s loss, the music critic Ann Powers offered some context on Twitter. “Grammy voters are recording industry pros: engineers, players. They like high craft. Adele was tailor made,” she wrote. “I've had many people say to me, #LEMONADE was great but not as music,” she added, suggesting that music industry insiders see albums like “Lemonade” as an achievement in pop art, but not necessarily in musicianship.

In response to a similar blow-up over Beyoncé’s loss to Beck in 2015, Beck’s defenders criticized her lyrics, production team, and instrument credits. The subtext: The highly produced music Beyoncé puts out is both unsophisticated (read: too black) and somehow less her own.
