There wasn't an E-40 thread

So I started one. Lightweight Jammin being on the ilx 2011 tracks poll made me seek out last year's two lps and currently half way through Day Shift and its blowing me away.

So yeah, talk about E-40 and let me know what classic albums/tracks to check out.

classic 90's mobb sound = in a major way
modern 00's rick rock sound = grit & grind

+ everything before, in between & after.

such a great & massive discography

40 is a certified legend throughout the central coast. I had no idea that he was so overlooked until I went to college and no one knew who he was, even the heads. His 90s output is quality. This is my second post on ilxor so hopefully these embedded youtubes work.

sisilafami, Thursday, 3 March 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

great interview thx bro

This is gonna be something ridiculous in the trunk. I'm talking about ridiculous, uncalled for slap. I gotta keep it one hundred. I'm talking about probably more slap than you've heard in years. I got a couple of them that's really gonna fuck that trunk up. They're probably gonna put a dent in everybody's trunk. If they got some woofers in that motherfucker? The sound itself might start putting dents in the trunk. That's how hard it hits. Certain tracks on my album hurt the trunk. You gotta adjust that level.

formatting is getting all fucked up when i try to c+p from wiki, but in addition to the usual guests one would expect, there's features from Juicy J T.I., Chris Brown, Webbie, 2 Chainz, Iamsu!, Guccie, Young Scooter, Big K.R.I.T., Danny Brown, Schoolboy Q, Rick Ross, French Montana, Trinidad James, Jeezy

xxxp always a mixed bag. I'd be cool with just b legit personally

Al He Miola (Spottie), Monday, 9 December 2013 04:47 (twelve years ago)

literally none of those guests is surprising, given who was on the previous Block Brochure albums and who was on the "Function" remix and who's been doing songs that sound like "Function" in the past year and the way E-40 has kinda always been the center of the rap universe.

some dude, Monday, 9 December 2013 05:10 (twelve years ago)

Yeah impossible to be surprised by any guest spot on a e40 album

Al He Miola (Spottie), Monday, 9 December 2013 05:12 (twelve years ago)

i wouldn't say i'm really "surprised", just passing along the list of features outside the usual.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 9 December 2013 05:22 (twelve years ago)

i wouldn't be surprised if an old unreleased pac feature was on this album quite frankly, but it's certainly a notable collection of guests by anybody's standards, wayne and khaled included

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Thursday, 10 April 2014 06:35 (eleven years ago)

Could you imagine if this had happened (re 2pac):

E-40: You know he was militant. He's like, "Man, we gone show 'em. We gone show them other folks how we gone get this money." He had a idea –- one idea that never came to light, but I know he would have been good at it. You know how they had Planet Hollywood? How all the actors got together and put that together at the time? He wanted to get all the rappers to do Gangster Cafe, and it would have like Al Capone — when you come in there you see pictures of Al Capone, Frank Nitty, all the gangsters. Pictures of them just like Planet Hollywood. Upscale and everything, but call it Gangster Cafe. That was one of his dreams, that's what he said. He was like, "You might want to put your money in this." I was like, "Let me know when. I got a little bit of gouda, I need in."

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Thursday, 10 April 2014 06:37 (eleven years ago)

MUHAMMAD: It's something still for a hip-hop artist — especially, the art form's been around for a minute and people are making money — to see people come together and make a power move like that because I don't think that's happened yet.

E-40: Nope, it haven't. That's the thing: we better together than separate. I try to tell cats. When I rock with Too Short -– one thing about me and Too Short, I respect him as being before me. He taught me a lot, just through his raps and the way he did it. He was the first one to let his nuts hang over his shoulder, and say the things he said. His beats was what the sound is now, way back in the early '80s. With the heavy bass line. And that was him on the keyboards: Todd Shaw.

Once me and Short start really connecting, it can't be no fallouts or nothing like that. Because you know why? I'ma always respect him as being the first. A lot of cats won't do that. They'll just be like, "Well, I'm over you now. I'm way more popular, I'm the dude right now." It ain't about that. You gotta pay homage man. These new cats don't pay homage like that. That's why they always separating and all over the place. Everybody got they egos, and they don't know people like Too Short is gonna be around forever. Because he embroidered in the game. He's in there.

Embroidered in the Game needs to be his next quadruple album name real talk

Like I had a song called "Trick": "Playa don't act like a trick ..."

KELLEY: You can say the real name of the song.

E-40: Oh, OK, I had a song called "B——."

KELLEY: Has that process changed since the '90s, your relationship with program directors?

E-40: They got that thing called PPM. They got just random people with the ankle bracelet — I mean, well, not a ankle bracelet, but with a bracelet or something. I'm sorry. With a monitor. And they carry it everywhere.

?? can anybody explain what he's talking about here?

Nope. they were supposed to come out a couple months ago, then disappeared, and now the proect has come back as "just" a double. (Still confusingly titled Sharp On All 4 Corners.) Anyway hopefully that means some intense quality control; the single is fun.
