L.A. food writer Jonathan Gold:
Oddly sad about Nate Dogg. His smooth yet vicious crooning was as vital to the early '90s as Biggie's lisp or Cobain's howl.

I knew he was ill, but this is incredibly sad. He was pretty much the only singer who's voice and vocal style fit gangsta rap perfectly; no modern r'n'b style histrionics and melismas, just cool and controlled crooning.

I wrote a poem last night when I heard the news, it's shamelessly sentimental but I hope this thread is an okay place to be shamelessly sentimental because seriously, shit.
The night was clearand blackand bore you in itlike a ray redrawn a hundred timesuntil the final taketouched the divine;you held the noteand trembled like the tide, but faster; triedto keep a steady hand, succeeded more or less, then died;and now the steadinessis somewhat lessimpressive than before, the way the film is sometimesovershadowed by the scorethat plays beneath the credits,or the singer by thecountless edits.

Although pretty much every R&B singer now is "post hip hop" in one way or the other, there was really something about Nate. He so effortlessly combined a west coast rap flow with a singing style that still seemed tied to classic R&B somehow...i guess effortless is the best way to describe him, he never seemed to strain, to show off what a "good singer" he was, the very first time i heard him (regulate probably) he was already himself, like 100 percent formed, he could make all those contradictions of his style seem completely natural, like how could it be any other way on regulate? or anything he sang on....i almost feel bad that it takes him dying for me to take a moment to really think about him, like really appreciate what he could do....i guess he was so low-key and natural that you ignore the artistry of it.

xxp just an amazing singer really — not in a flashy way obv, kind of by the nature of his genre and aesthetic; but when he does push it a little bit (that incredible east-siiiiiide... moteeeee-yay-ee-yellllll on "regulate"), I get goosebumps. and his vibrato is str8-up ridiculous. even if someone nowadays could sing like that, it would all get autotuned out!!

This is true, but those two things are kind of embedded in the minds of people (roughly) my age in a way subsequent singles/albums are not. Not saying the rest of his career isn't worth a damn, because it VERY MUCH is, but those are his two strongest cultural touchstones.

people (roughly) my age
By this I mean suburban white folks who are familiar with some rap/hip hop but often only hear it at clubs/parties/in friends' cars and, on rarer occasions, really embrace a particular album or song without following up on the rest of the artist's output. Like, there was a time when I knew The Chronic backwards and forwards, but quiz me on any other rap album, big or small, from 1992 and I'll fail that quiz.

Right. I was 18 when The Chronic came out. I imagine people who were 18 in the '00s treat The Chronic like I treat the first Clash album.

as far as the original statements we're talking about ("There was a window there for people to be aware of Nate Dogg" and JF's "The Chronic and Regulate was probably the greatest amount of exposure he got with large swaths of the listening public") definitely don't ring very true, if for no other reason than "21 Questions" was absolutely huge and at least 4-5 songs from that era were almost as big. but sure, he's definitely primarily associated with the '90s era in which he first got famous and established his sound and identity, the same way people probably associate Green Day more with Dookie than American Idiot.
― some dude, Thursday, 17 March 2011 00:02 (fourteen years ago)
I was 18 in 2000 and The Chronic and 2001 were huge among people i knew, especially types who wouldn't normally listen to rap.

Yeah 2001 was the biggest record. Nate on The Next Episode is still a thing that everyone I know in their 20s or whatever remembers and loves, regardless of how into hiphop they are. Even my brother, who gave me a slap upside the head for wearing my Chronic t-shirt on Christmas because oh no, bad themes in hiphop stuck in photos forever or some condescending shit, was putting up Nate dogg lyrics on his fb all day.

the way that Steve 1der mix layers the "SMOKE WEED EVERY DAY" from "next episode" with the "SMOOOKIN ON SUM WEEEEEEEEEED" from "where i wanna be" has replaced the memory of how either appears in their original context.

Familiar to a lot of people? Sure. Iconic? Prolly not.
I'm trying to explain this as non-condescendingly as possible to you youngs, but in 1992/93 The Chronic was as ubiquitous and omnipresent as Lady Gaga is now. Like fucking WORLDWIDE everybody-and-their-uncle-Joe knew about it.

Most of the newspaper articles I see tend to call him a rapper. But was Nate Dogg really a rapper? Surely, most of the people he worked with were rappers, and he was very much part of the hip-hop-scene. But a rapper? I would say not.

there's a pretty awesome moment on the Up in Smoke Tour DVD where they're doing "The Next Episode' and they get to the 'hold up' part and they stop the record and Nate Dogg strolls to the front of the stage, audience roaring, and him just glaring nonchalantly at em like he knew he was a badass.
then the record resumes after what feels like a 30 second pause and he starts doing his thang....

I had it on VHS cuz there was a flaw in the original run of DVDs I think in which many of them became unplayable at a certain point of the disc (usually 2/3rds of the way through). took the first one back, got the next...SAME EXACT spot it starts skipping and getting stuck.

I am surely no rap fan, but have been very much aware of Nate Dogg since "Regulate". However, I did like G-Funk somewhat, and I also liked "Regulate". Even after hearing the original, because I feel some crucial elements were added that were not present on the original (I suspect they would only have annoyed me had I been familiar with the original first though....)

On a cool, clear night (typical to Southern California) Warren G travels through his neighborhood, searching for women with whom he might initiate sexual intercourse. He has chosen to engage in this pursuit alone.[5]
Nate Dogg, having just arrived in the east side of Long Beach, seeks Warren. On his way to find Warren, Nate passes a car full of women who are excited to see him. Regardless, he insists to the women that there is no cause for excitement.
Warren makes a left turn at 21st Street and Lewis Ave, in the East Hill/Salt Lake neighborhood[6], where he sees a group of young men enjoying a game of dice together. He parks his car and greets them. He is excited to find people to play with, but to his chagrin, he discovers they intend to relieve him of his material possessions. Once the hopeful robbers reveal their firearms, Warren realizes he is in a less than favorable predicament.
Meanwhile, Nate passes the women, as they are low on his list of priorities. His primary concern is locating Warren. After curtly casting away the strumpets (whose interest in Nate was such that they crashed their automobile), he serendipitously stumbles upon his friend, Warren G, being held up by the young miscreants.
Warren, unaware that Nate is surreptitiously observing the scene unfold, is in disbelief that he is being robbed. The perpetrators have taken jewelry and a Rolex Watch from Warren, who is so incredulous that he asks what else the robbers intend to steal. This is most likely a rhetorical question.
Observing these unfortunate proceedings, Nate realizes that he may have to use his firearm to deliver his friend from harm.
The tension crescendos as the robbers point their guns to Warren's head. Warren senses the gravity of his situation. He cannot believe the events unfolding could happen in his own neighborhood. As he imagines himself making a fantastical escape, he catches a glimpse of his friend, Nate.
Nate has seventeen cartridges (sixteen residing in the pistol's magazine, with a solitary round placed in the chamber and ready to be fired) to expend on the group of robbers. Afterward, he generously shares the credit for neutralizing the situation with Warren, though it is clear that Nate did all of the difficult work. Putting congratulations aside, Nate quickly reminds himself that he has committed multiple homicides to save Warren before letting his friend know that there are females nearby if he wishes to fornicate with them.
Warren recalls that it was the promise of copulation that coaxed him away from his previous activities, and is thankful that Nate knows a way to satisfy these urges. Nate quickly finds the women who earlier crashed their car on Nate's account. He remarks to one that he is fond of her physical appeal. The woman, impressed by Nate's singing ability, asks that he and Warren allow her and her friends to share transportation. Soon, both friends are driving with automobiles full of women to the East Side Motel, presumably to consummate their flirtation in an orgy.
The third verse is more expository, with Warren and Nate explaining their G Funk musical style. Warren displays his bravado by daring anyone to approach the style. There follows a brief discussion of the genre's musicological features, with special care taken to point out that in said milieu the rhythm is not in fact the rhythm, as one might assume, but actually the bass. Similarly the bass serves a purpose closer to that which the treble would in more traditional musical forms. Nate displays his bravado by claiming that individuals with equivalent knowledge could not even attempt to approach his level of lyrical mastery. Nate goes on to note that if any third party smokes as he does, they would find themselves in a state of intoxication almost daily (from Nate's other works, it can be inferred that the substance referenced is marijuana[7]). Nate concludes his delineation of the night by issuing a threat to "busters," suggesting that he and Warren will further "regulate" any potential incidents in the future (presumably by engaging their antagonists with small arms fire).

According to TMZ, Dr. Dre will have the late rapper performing in the form of a hologram because he wanted to include him in the performance.
An image of Nate Dogg will be projected on stage to join Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Warren G, and Daz Dillinger and create the appearance of an actual performance. The hologram form of the West Coast rapper is set to perform a number of songs.
