Don't laugh, but... chart rap is sort of depressing me right now

Can't explain it really -- I think Eminem's album is mostly just an unfun downtempo pity party (except for "Without Me", but then listening to the album has sort of ruined the lyrics for me as it seems like part of a 'woe is me, also I RULE' two-pronged album-lentgh attack of dysfunctional emotions -- dammit, what happened to the "Any Man"/"Guilty Conscience"/goofy bastard Eminem?). I have no real good reason to dislike Nelly besides the fact that KRS-One was one of the MCs that actually turned me on to hip-hop on a more serious basis in the early '90s, but his lock on the pop charts seems more tyrannical than populist (then again the whole Clear Channel radio monopoly/payola scandal stirrings could be part of that feeling of mine). And as great as the Neptunes and Timbaland are and as talented as the MCs that they produce for are, everything seems to sort of blur together in a shapeless amoeba of platinum chains and Escalades and thongs -- nothing wrong with that until it becomes a paradigm that's dominant to the point where a group like Dilated Peoples (as an example) that doesn't rhyme about such things gets lumped in as "backpacker" rap.
This is problematical for me primarily because I'm at a point where I really want to open up and like a lot of this stuff (Clipse's "Grindin'" f'rinstance, which is already on my singles list) but while the production is great and the MCs have skills it seems so far from my idea of what I like in music; I don't really want to listen to rich people sing about rich people stuff nonstop. What am I missing?

(Oh, guess which category I put this under? Har har har)
(Also I would appreciate more than just "yeah well you listen to Blackalicious so you suck anyways" in response, thanx)

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

could you post this chart? i think there are a bunch of solid to very good singles out right now, but i think the neptunes and timbaland are bonkers hooray, and i think krs one is a tyrant, where nelly just wants to get naked and go crazy, which i would vote for.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you misunderstood my definition of "tyranny" -- it's not "The Sneak Attack" that's got all the airplay and MTV videos and Source covers (which is kind of a relief 'cos it's not that good). I mean wow there Nelly is on the radio every thirty minutes and he's got the #1 and #2 songs in the US Billboard charts and there is is munching on a Twix and I hear the hot new thing is the sweatband-bandaid-and-acne look etc. etc. This is probably just a matter of an artist I don't really like being ultra-popular right now but the state of major label promotion and radio play just makes it seem a bit more insidious to me.

Also I doubt Nelly would really want you to get naked and go crazy unless you are a hot female. If I was in that video he'd be all "Ya know on second thought/I'll turn the AC on".

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Nate I am sort of with you. I'm hoping it's just a bad end-of-summer wind-down -- everyone angles for a "summer hit," throws the good stuff out toward the end of spring, and then August is left as a played-out doldrum of sub-par hits and "let's see if we can squeeze a fourth hit off of this album."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I like everything about Nelly's records except Nelly. What I find I'm liking more than the big omnipresent charttoppers (although the organ/synth (?) in "It's Hot in Here" reminds me of the Michael McDonald sample in "Regulate", a definite plus), are the third-tier crass hip-pop that never cracks the top ten but manages to loads of airplay (on Atlanta radio anyway). I'm thinking here of the song that used the chorus from "The Pina Colada Song" and the newer one that borrows the melody (disjarringly) to "Frere Jacques/Where is Thumbkin". Still, Timbaland's presence hasn't been felt this summer which might explain the relative malaise.

James Blount, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe it would help you to find a context in which you like to hear these songs, and just stick with that for a while. say, if you like to hear them in your car more than while sitting at home, just let that be the way it is for now, and see if anything grows on you enough that you start wanting to hear it and enjoy it in other contexts. last year I often preferred to hear rap on my headphones, especially while in transit. I thought something was wrong with not wanting to hear it at home, but things eventually changed anyway once I let them.

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

and, something I've been meaning to ask - where the hell is Ethan anyway?

James Blount, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

He's created a monster 'cuz nobody wants to see ethan no more, they want simon, he's chopped liver.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

if past years are any indication, hiphop's going to be okay for the rest of the year. it's january - april that's often really dry, because people buy less records, so the labels hold back the big singles and albums. september through november is always good, and def jam likes to put out a bunch of releases just in time for xmas

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

"Merry Christmas! Here's a Ja Rule album!"
"What, was coal too hard to come by?"
(Actually that was mean and I like some Def Jam artists such as the lovable Redman but I couldn't resist)

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

you're not a jay-z fan as i understand it, but redman, method man, nas and ghostface killah are all on def jam, as is the revamped cam'ron (two great singles so far) and dmx (always some potential).

honestly, i'd kill for some new method man material

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

patrin how old are you?

simon trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

you see, he's here, do you see, look!!! (he'll be making tapes with b&s on in a minute)

i love nelly. someone told me yesterday that there were people who don't love nelly. i don't believe him though, he's always fooling with people and shit

some of you, uh, americans, seem to make fun of nate, and i think he takes it well

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

mc pitman should be more yorkshire, then he could crack the grimethorpe and barnsley hot 40, and the cleckheaton, liversedge and huddersield top 10. i'm freezing me fuckin bollocks off here, put fucking kettle on

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"So you think Jay Z is blowing up? He's blowing something, Girls, girls, girls, girls, he adores, Elton John got married mate, ya get me?"

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

24 (i.e. old and jaded and cranky and bitter and I hate you damn kids and your youth culture. Now git off my lawn)

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

mystikal's "big truck driver" is the hotness...did that come out in 2001 or 2002?

nate, the radio is as good as it ever is; this sort of thing is all relative to perception, place, and taste. bizarro world nate (or nate a year from now) might like it even more (or less) depending on what happens in the interim.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i only dislike ONE of those, who can guess which!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

that's a great list!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm guessing big tymers.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i reckon nappy roots

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

youre both wrong!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

the eve and alicia keys song is pretty bonk. i haven't heard the ll song, but it prolly sucks.

i'm disappointed that the scarface single isn't there

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

it's "closet" and i'm right.

mitch lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

ding ding ding

simon trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The Angie Martinez song is dull and Sacario sounds like the poor man's Jay-Z or something.

Honda, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i haven't even heard the #1 single. i need to turn on the radio more often.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a GREAT list! I agree w/ STrife about "Closet", though, and Cam'ron and that Chipmunk crap can SHUT IT sometime in the next 5 minutes, thanks, but otherwise I am happy / have no idea what these sound like (cf. "Dilemma", "Po' Folks"). I saw the video for the Li'l Wayne song, but I swear it was actually the Big Tymers video. Not enough sleep, I think.

Nate, it's cyclical. If there's a rough patch, just coast for a while - things are likely to get nice & smooth soon. Don't blame pop music for being as fickle and mercurial as it is. And if you're not offering blame, then don't worry!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a pretty mediocre list. Lots of alright stuff, nothing great. I love the Neptunes, but someone should have come along to replace them by now. Used to be that nobody's sound lasted more than a year, but they're still getting away with knocking off stuff like Nothin' in their sleep out of loops from 3 other tunes they already did.

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Grindin' and Move B***h are all right. The rest can eat a dick cookie.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually I'll give you Beenie Man and Nappy Roots, too. Also LL is LL even when he's crap. But the rest just does nothing for me. (It WOULD be a lot better with Meth/Redman/various Wu-types on it. Also "Coming 2 America".)

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

The four of five things I know from that list are great, except the Eminem and Cam'ron - Helium vox are great but that track wore out quick (unlike the Holiday Styles one, dont know if its the one on the chart tho).

Nate listen to more UK hip-hop :)

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

why do i keep hearing different vocals to "Roc the Mic" on the radio??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

that's also a great song. i'm really excited about the total interchangeability of lineups in songs these days. it's like all of the b-level stars (just below jay-z, eminem) have agreed to be on any song at any time, so its like there no such thing as crew love anymore. it's all about cashing in with consumer friendly posse pop, and i dig it. also, every label seems to have got an in-house rnb singer to give their singles the pop touch. plus they're all so much nicer and woman-friendly these days. mannie fresh raps about how great monogamy is, as well as having children!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm pretty satisfied (if not thrilled) with the current slate of hits aside from all that Murder Inc. shit. Irv Gotti beats aren't even that bad (if still unexceptional), but just those goddamn extraneous woooosh sounds he has to throw over everything drive me nuts. makes you appreciate the economy of better producers even more.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 29 August 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I've kinda warmed up to "Closet".... It was a turn off at first, and it's certainly not as fun as "Without Me". And I can't imagine having to listen to it several times a day, every day; but I can deal. Not bad musical backing either. I haven't heard the "Show". Is this the worst track, you guys gather?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 29 August 2002 01:27 (twenty-three years ago)

sadly no.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 29 August 2002 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

yes unless you count SOLDIER!! shut up jess!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 29 August 2002 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i've heard "hot in here"

but more importantly, i am going to start using the phrase "bonkers hooray" as a superlative, even if that is not exactly how you meant it here, boxcubed?? i can't quite tell, i mean obv. you're saying something positive, but i'm not sure if you meant it like "bonkers hooray" or "bonkers, hooray." in any case, i have surely just proven myself to be bonkers. hooray.

ron (ron), Thursday, 29 August 2002 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

The Angie and Trick Daddy singles are sweet. (what if TD duets with Jackson and Kelly next?)

Also I like closet when I listen closely to the lyrics and think just how fuckin' nasty they are.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 29 August 2002 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Em sounds really weird at the end of the chorus, like Linda Richman or something. "CLAWWWWWWW-ZET".

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 29 August 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

bonkers hooray, ho!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 29 August 2002 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

fine fine cleanin out my closet is actually ok

simon trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 29 August 2002 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What Jess said. The trawling the depths runs very, very deep on that album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 August 2002 04:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i still like the album a good deal. it's on a break now after relentless spinning last month, but it didn't leave me disappointed. jess is right re: drips being more crass (in a way that doesn't endear) than 'cronenberg', but i like obie so its not a definite skipper. of the other two lows, soldier's alright and closet works as an album track. business, saying goodbye to hollywood, square dance and my dad's gone crazy are all super.

i had a dream a few weeks ago in which i was telling someone how the marshall mathers lp feels a whole lot 'looser' and 'freer' than the em show, and i think i agree with myself. the 1/4 beat (i think? ethan you mentioned this once yeah?) on kill you leaves a whole lotta breathing room (for slim to play around with his flow a little more than usual) and criminal is also notably sparse, at least when compared to most eminem show songs, which at times sound suffocatingly compressed (and occasionally in a good way too).

mitch lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 29 August 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

mitch is right!

simon trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 29 August 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

That Beenie Man track is wonderful and my feelings have nothing to do with Janet's bikini in the video (CALL ME DAMMIT I'M NOT THAT MUCH YOUNGER THAN YOU AND MY WIFE WILL UNDERSTAND).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 29 August 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

ewww dan!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 29 August 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

WHAT WIFE DAN? YOU DON'T HAVE A WIFE.

The presence of rap in the charts has depressed me since "Walk This Way".

-- Geir Hongro, Friday, 13

weird, i never know what to expect from you at all Geir. Im sure ive seen you on lots of r&b and hip hop threads.

600, Friday, 13 April 2007 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

i think maybe its just a surprise to see you being so down on something, normally you are, i dont know, less likely to dwell on things you dont like?

600, Friday, 13 April 2007 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, if rap had just dipped down in the underground, together with other genres that used to be mainstream for a while, like for instance prog, AOR, reggae etc, then no problem.

It's about time the hitlists were about something completely different though (and so-called "contemporary R&B" isn't different enough)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 April 2007 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

Where is the thread where Blount and I find Geir on slsk and discover the huge reserves of hip-hop in his shared files?

Groke, Friday, 13 April 2007 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

if Geir just dipped down in the underground etc.

blueski, Friday, 13 April 2007 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

The powerpop underground is fine enough, but it is hard to make out the best stuff from all the rest, which is why it would have been an advantage with powerpop dominating the hitlists.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 April 2007 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

it's difficult to hear stuff when you're underground, true.

that's like the time someone threw a cigarette out of the front window of the car and it came in the back window and hit me in the face

skimming i thought for a second this previous post was a metaphor for lily allen

and what, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

she kinda reminds me of one of my exes, so it might be

"Or"?

HI DERE, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

ethan's list looks about right but i like "oh boy" more than that

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

'no homo' or whatver

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

oh boy is really annoying

and what, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

oh boy = hot beat + terrible rapping

strongohulkington, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

oh sorry that's every dipset song ever

strongohulkington, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

look at dis kicks
look at dis cars

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

am i the only person who was ever obsessed with 'luv u better'? i even did a blend of marios 'just a friend' vocals over it

and what, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

hah i liked that song a lot ... probably the only song he did in the last few years that i could even bother with. For a ballad-tempo it was solid neptunes!

i feel like i'm missing something real obvious but it sure isnt 'headsprung'

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

really this is depressing the shit out of me how good we had it just 5 years ago - i like a couple of the tracks on that current top 10 but none of them are even better than the angie martinez joint

and what, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

ok maybe walk it out

and what, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

i expected to dislike more of the current top ten than i do

can anyone find the next ten?

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, man, looking at that list just reminded me how tiresome the '02 era hegemony was. even though that was like the Neptunes' peak, I only really like 2 or 3 of those 5 songs (although "Luv U Better" is definitely one of them), plus Wayne and Em's worst singles, and Irv Gotti galore. still hard to believe there was a point when Angie Martinez had a charting single, but that song was dope.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

waynes worst single is still pretty good

i have both angie martinez albums & theyre dope!! pre-fame cool & dre beats + pre-nas revival salaam remi shit and tons of guest rappers

if i could go was rick rock!

and what, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

2000 > 2001 > 2003 > 2004 > 2002

strongohulkington, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

maybe

strongohulkington, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

anyway i could give a fuck about irv gotti but down 4 u is a timeless joint

and what, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

2002 > 2004

charts anyway

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

otherwise i might agree

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

Holy christ was I lame. That's a pretty good top 20.

nate p., Friday, 13 April 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

hah i think the only really offensive thing about yr posts is the phrase 'eat a dick cookie'

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

And as great as the Neptunes and Timbaland are and as talented as the MCs that they produce for are, everything seems to sort of blur together in a shapeless amoeba of platinum chains and Escalades and thongs

juxtaposing "thongs" and Rick Ross in the same post is way grosser than what I posted

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 13 April 2007 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

a shapeless amoeba of platinum chains and Escalades with a beard

and what, Friday, 13 April 2007 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Gary Larson might be tempted to come out of retirement just so he can draw that.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 13 April 2007 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

hah whenever i picture an amoeba i totally picture a far side drawing

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

(r.i.p. murphy lee)

i'll never stop loving "what the hook gon be"
